Book Review: Fairies At Bedtime

Fairies at Bedtime is a compilation of 20 bedtime stories to tell your children, which of course all have fairies in them.  The beginning of the book explains all the different kind of fairies and where they come from and it also explains how to get your child to relax in bed before you begin reading them the stories.  The book encourages parents to get involved in the story telling by changing their voices for the different characters as well.

Each story is about a different set of fairies and different situations that they get involved with, and each story ends with a bit of a moral to teach your child a lesson based on the story that they just heard. They call it “affirmations” and there are about 3 bullet points with things that your child should have learned from the story.  I’m not sure that you really want to get into a conversation with them about it before they are going to bed, but maybe you can have them think about it and follow up the next day.

The stories are cute and they are great lessons for the kids and the illustrations are absolutely wonderful as well.

About the Book

Offers children the wisdom and guidance of fairy folk, elves, spirits and sprites in an enchanting collection of 20 calming bedtime stories, full of positive energy and told in a warm, inspiring and contemporary voice.

Fairies, devas, spirits and sprites – every culture around the world has recognised that nature is alive with positive and powerful energies. From mysterious elf kings and queens to will o’ the wisps, there are forces at work ready to help us to connect with our environment and enrich our experience.

This book presents a delightful collection of stories to enchant and inspire every child. While each tale is rich with magic, featuring creatures such as a moonbeam fairy and a friendly Cherokee fairy, there are also helpful messages at work. Here, your child will learn, for example, that change doesn’t need to be frightening, that we all have valuable talents and abilities, and that patience and faith are often rewarded. There are also messages to help children to better understand the natural world, including the importance of wilderness, why we should respect natural cycles and the need to conserve what is precious and irreplaceable. Affirmations at the end of each story help to highlight its positive message. Designed to be read either by parents with their children or by children on their own, these compelling narratives focus the child’s mind and provide a soothing transition into sleep or give food for thought during daytime reading.

Book Review: Ramblings in Ireland

Ramblings in Ireland is about a trip that Kerry Dwyer and her husband Bertrand took to Ireland.  Kerry is a Brit and her husband is French.  Kerry actually contacted me herself asking me to review the book. At first I was hesitant because my “to read” list was getting quite long.  But then I saw that she doesn’t have the ability to read a map.  Me either! So, she caught my attention.  I liked how she also talked about turning the map to try and read it better.  I try the same thing! If it is facing the way I am facing then I know which way I should be going.  North? South? These are meaningless to me. (For the longest time I would say “We are going up to the city” umm, New York City is south from Connecticut. I had no clue.)

Fortunately for Kerry, her husband doesn’t really seem to have a problem with her inability to read a map or know direction.  But he continues to allow her to plan their outings when they are on vacation!  He must like the adventure that getting lost brings, anyone else would probably suggest that they plan the outings after getting lost one or two times.

It was fun to read about their trip and their adventures.  There were also some other ramblings about Kerry’s life, her family, how she decided what to pack.. Though I probably could have done without the discussion of her choice on underwear and peeing in the wilderness. Haha. (Though there were a couple of funny anecdotes included as well that I would have missed out on entirely if she chose to not include this.)

It was also good to know that I am not alone with my horrible sense of direction and I can only hope that I will one day find a husband like Bertrand who will accept this and laugh it off rather than get upset or annoyed with me when I get us lost!

I received a free e-copy of this book from the author in order to write this review. I was not otherwise compensated.

About the Book

This is not a book about rambling in Ireland.

It tells the tale of one particular walking trip and the memories and musings it inspired.

Exploring the West of Ireland is a time for meditation, spiritual reflection and strengthening the bonds of life. More practically the ability to read a map might have proved helpful. The tourist office in Ireland has all their paths clearly marked. You can’t go wrong if you follow that little yellow man. Or can you?

As British ex-patriate Kerry Dwyer leads Bertrand, her trusting French husband, astray once more, they reminisce and reflect upon accents and accidents, family and friends, love and what it means to be alive. Bertrand doesn’t mind getting lost – he loves Kerry all the more for going off the beaten track.

This is a book about ramblings in Ireland. Walk with Kerry and Bertrand and follow where your thoughts lead you

The Abbey Road Sessions will be released tomorrow, November 6!  The album features 16 tracks, all radically reworked, spanning Kylie’s incredibly twenty-five-year career! (Impressive!) The album was recorded in London’s legendary Abbey Road Studios with Kylie’s band and a full orchestra.

Throughout 2012 Kylie has been celebrating K25, her 25th Anniversary in music. It has been an extraordinary career so far – 60 million global album sales, multiple hit singles, spectacular global tours, amazing collaborations, countless accolades, acting roles and regular TV appearances. All of which has permanently cemented her place in music history as a bona-fide superstar.

The album is a really nice compilation of Kylie’s career.  It is a bit more stripped down and slow than you might be expecting, but that is due to the addition of the full orchestra which really adds a nice new element to the songs. While not technically a greatest hits – it is nice that all the songs were reworked and it isn’t just a forced release – it is a worth while purchase to hear all the songs with their new layers.

There are really only a few of the songs that I was familiar with before listening to the CD – with most of them being her big singles – “Locomotion”, “Can’t Get You Out Of My Head” and “Love at First Sight”  The reworking of the song “Love at First Sight” is really well done as well.  I think I like this orchestra version better than the original!

I didn’t realize that Kylie had been at it for so long – 25 years – wow! But I guess time flies when you are having fun!

The song “Flower” is her latest single and it is a song she wrote several years ago following  her battle with breast cancer, the song is written to the child she wishes she might one day have.  It is a beautiful song and the lyrics are really touching.

If you are a Kylie fan then you won’t want to miss out on this great new CD that is being released tomorrow :)  If you’re not a fan, check it out anyway!

Colby June Twig Rings

Over the past few months, I have become obsessed with jewelry, especially rings after a friend suggested me to look up http://www.tungstenrings.com/ from where she gifted her husband a beautiful ring. I recently got sent the “Twig Ring” from Colby June Jewelry.  The ring is made out of sterling silver and comes in whole and half sizes from 5-9. (I’m a 7.5)

The first question I seemed to get from everyone when I was wearing it was “Doesn’t it poke you?”  The ends of the twigs are really not that sharp, and I didn’t find it poking me when I made a fist, though it did dig in to me a bit when I was trying to open a bottle of soda.  For this reason, I wouldn’t recommend it for a younger child, but for a young adult or adult who won’t go around trying to poke people with it, you should not have any problems with it poking you!

I absolutely love the ring and I think that it is a very simple design but one that definitely gets peoples attention once they spot it on your finger.  It is the perfect thing to complete any outfit this autumn and winter seasons, with the leaves falling off the trees and all their twigs being visible.

Colby June has a store on ETSY where you can check out the twig ring or even more nature inspired jewelry – http://www.etsy.com/shop/colbyjune

Even more information on the jewelry can be found at the official Colby June site: http://www.colbyjune.com

If you are looking for a dimond ring, check out https://www.jacobmercari.com/loose-diamonds/ for the best selection of high quality diamonds for your perfect ring.

I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free usingTomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

The Voice – Knockout Rounds

Ah, the Knockout rounds. The new addition to the show. Each contestant chooses their own song to perform and the coaches pick 2 contestants. After they each sing their song, one is chosen to move on and the other moves home. After the other rounds seemed to be dragging on and on, they went through these pretty quickly.  I think 4 hour long shows instead of 2 2 hour long shows would have held my attention a bit better.  With the hurricane knocking out power Monday night, we watched Tuesday on demand and then the second episode “live”, so it was a little bit of knockout round overkill here at CK headquarters. lol.  Now each coach has 5 team members and we will be going to the live shows. Where I imagine things will be cut down pretty quickly again (or maybe not, since they will now be competing with XFactor’s live shows.)

XFactor – Top 16

I think this is the first time I am actually able to watch the show “live” since it premiered! Between losing Fox, getting new cable but then not being home when it was on… Sheesh!  But I guess now is as good a time as any to avoid being spoiled!  There will be no public vote and the judges will decide who stays to move on to next week!

No fancy XFactor logo/icon.. yet. Maybe Ill try to make something this weekend.

This week’s theme “Made in America”

Paige Thomas – What Is Love –  What an outfit! I thought she did well but going first I have nothing to compare her to. It didn’t really blow me away.  But we’ll see how the rest of the contestants end up doing.

Arin Ray – You Keep Me Hanging On – Definitely an interesting song choice – Diana Ross – but I liked the rendition.  The smoke going off was a bit distracting though. Again, I’m not blown away but it was a decent performance.

David Correy – My Love Is Your Love – Probably my favorite performance thus far, though that is not really saying much since we are only 3 in.

Sister C – Hell on Heels – Not a fan of Sister C. Though I did like that Simon had them do a bit scaled back performance compared to some of the others. Just the three of them on stage and some fancy lights.

Jennel Garcia – Home Sweet Home – I don’t like that Demi had them do Jennel’s hair just like hers! But I do like Jennel and I think she is my favorite of Demi’s gang. It was a great performance.  (Simon said the same thing about trying to make Jennel a clone of Demi!)

Diamond White – Hey Soul Sister – This performance seemed to have a lot going on and a lot of colors which distracted a bit from Diamond’s performance. And I swear the audio on this show is terrible (or maybe I’m going deaf?) Every performance I have to turn it up louder. I wasn’t too into this performance, but I don’t think it was the worst either. (I also really dislike Train and that probably has a lot to do with it)

Vino Alan – Gotta Be Somebody – I think that Vino was my fave of the over 25s. Unfortunately the song choice left something to be desired.

Lyric 145 – Boom! Shake the Room / Gangnam Style – This brought my back to my days of Kriss Kross when I was a kid… Probably my favorite of the night! Wow. Awesome.

CeCe Frey- Because the Night – I think she took on too much with this song and seemed to lose her breath at times. And I just don’t like her.. so there’s that.

Tate Stevens – Tough – Not really a country fan but he is pretty good!

Beatrice Miller – I Won’t Give Up – There is something about her that I don’t like, but she did a  good performance, although some parts came across more as she was talking than singing. I did think she brought feeling into the song though.

Jason Brock – Dance Again – He is very over the top – but for him, it totally works. I’m not sure I’d listen to his stuff after the competition, but he is a lot of fun and very entertaining!

Lylas 1432 -We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together – Obviously don’t like the song choice – but I really love this group. Favorite group? Maybe.  Not sure I like the new name though. Perhaps it’ll grow on me.

Willie Jones – Here For The Party – I like Willie. You just totally don’t expect him to have that country voice!

Carly Rose – Somethings Got a Hold Of Me – This is my girl! I saw her audition and I want to see her go all the way!

Emblem 3 – One Day – I was really not sold on these guys until they did some harmonies in the beginning… and I think they’ve won me over. Just what I need.. another “we’re not a boyband” to obsess over.

Assuming 1 from each group is going home – from the Young Adults I would send home CeCe, from the groups Sister C, from the kids Beatrice and from the over 25s maybe Vino.

I really don’t know how they’re going to do it…

—–

Time for the judges to pick 2 to move to the next round.

Young Adults – Jennel and Paige (totally cool with that!)

CeCe sings for her life – again I am having audio issues so the background music seemed to be taking over. Is it just me or is this how FOX is for this show?

Willie sings for his life – I don’t know. I wasn’t really blown away by EITHER… but I like Willie more…

Demi sends home Willie :(

Over 25s – LA’s turn to be in the hot seat.  He saves Vino and Tate.  I actually had Jason as going home but changed it to Vino (why?) So now I am 0 for 2 lol

David and Jason sing for their life.  I like them both, but forced to pick I’d go with David to stay.

LA sends home David. (WOW. I am really bad at picking!)

Teens – Britney saves Beatrice and Carly Rose (YES! I still stink at picking but my girl is through!)

Diamond and Arin must sing for their lives. I thought Arin sounded off key but based on the judges I am wrong. (I really think the FOX audio is just bad, I have it turned up a TON too)  Of the two I think Arin should go home.

Britney sends home Diamond.  (I do not have XFactor judge as a job in my future, huh?)

Groups – No brainer – Emblem 3 goes through first. Lyric 145 are the other easy choice to make it through.

1432 and Sister C sing for their life.  My vote goes to 1432 to stay and Sister C to go home…

Simon sends home Sister C.  (Well, it looks like I got one right…)

I am looking forward to getting to vote next week! Even though I seem o fail at XFactor judging… Hopefully I’m a bit better at voting!

Album Review: Chris Mann – Roads (#Roads)

Roads
Need You Now
Cuore
The Blower’s Daughter
My Way
Unless You Mean It
Always On My Mind
On a Night Like This
Ave Maria
Falling
Viva La Vida

Chris Mann, Team XTina’s runner up from The Voice has released an album called Roads.  Influenced by Pavarotti, Robbie Williams and vintage Sinatra, Chris’ blend of classically-trained tenor and contemporary pop vocals is a sound that’s rare in music today. Said Cee Lo, “He is by far one of the most incomparable vocalists I have ever heard.” Christina Aguilera told him “I feel the heavens open up when you sing”

Roads was released on October 30, a follow up to his Christmas EP that was released on October 9.  The album includes producers Keith Thomas (Amy Grant, Vanessa Williams, Charlotte Church, Heather Headley), Walter Afanasieff (Andrea Boecelli, Josh Groban, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey) and Marius de Vries (Jackie Evancho, Josh Groban, PJ Harvey).

Chris was by far not one of my favorites on The Voice last season (but when you are up against Tony Lucca, someone I have had a crush on since I was in 5th grade – it is hard for anyone else to compete!)

The Roads album is really well put together – the accompaniment for each of the songs is simply beautiful when combined with Chris’ voice.  I especially love his rendition of Lady A’s “Need You Now”, the second track on the CD.

Christina joins Chris on the track “The Blower’s Daughter” and the duet gave me goosebumps! It is just so beautiful and moving. Wow. I’m impressed.

The combination of songs on the CD is great and it really showcases Chris’ amazing voice.  (Especially that note he holds out on My Way! Wow. Wow. Wow.)  If you’ve never heard of him or if you weren’t all that into him during The Voice – I recommend you check out the album anyway – I find it hard to believe that you would not be impressed with it.

Book Review: Mary Wells

Mary Wells was one of the first female singers signed to Motown.  She quickly became known as “The Queen of Motown” and helped bring black music to the forefront of America.  She is probably most well known for her single “My Guy” but it is believed that she helped bring in millions of dollars to Motown with all of her singles.

This book is her complete biography and includes information from interviews done with Mary while she was dying of cancer in the early 90s.  While on her death bed she did these interviews as well as hired laywers to sue Motown because she was left penniless based on her contracts with the record company, despite bringing them in quite a lot of money.  Barry Gordy had given her $25,000 to help out with medical expenses but Mary still hired a lawyer.

The book chronicles her entire life – the early days when she was told that she couldn’t perform because she was “wearing a pant suit” (but after saying she would change into a dress was told that she could not perform because she was black)  Her multiple singles (the end of the book has a complete discography for her), her touring with the Beatles, her ups and downs in life, her multiple marriages, etc.

Definitely an interesting read on a woman who helped bring Motown to the forefront.

I received a free e-copy of this book from the publisher in order to write this review. I was not otherwise compensated.

About the Book

Complete with never-before-revealed details about the sex, violence, and drugs in her life, this biography reveals the incredibly turbulent life of Motown artist Mary Wells. Based in part on four hours of previously unreleased and unpublicized deathbed interviews with Wells, this account delves deeply into her rapid rise and long fall as a recording artist, her spectacular romantic and family life, the violent incidents in which she was a participant, and her abuse of drugs. From tumultuous affairs, including one with R&B superstar Jackie Wilson, to a courageous battle with throat cancer that climaxed in her gutsiest performance, this history draws upon years of interviews with Wells’s friends, lovers, and husband to tell the whole story of a woman whose songs crossed the color line and whose voice captivated the Beatles.
