Honor Society EP release

Tuesday Honor Society played New York City to celebrate the release of their new EP, Serendipity.  Opening up was Jillette Johnson and Love Via Dance Machine (LVDM).

Jillette is from NYC and I thought she had a great voice and interacted a lot with the audience. She did a few songs including Peter Pan, When the Ship Goes Down and Cameron.  She was also accompanied by a cello, which was something I don’t think I’d ever seen before at a show.

LVDM was a group of 4 guys from Boston – Wiley, Izaiah, Alex and Jimmy.  They were very animated on stage – but unfortunately I don’t think the crowd was all that into them.  J14 Magazine was in the house checking on their performance – although their instagram photo caption made it seem like it was LVDM’s show – and not Honor Society’s.
About 9:30 Honor Society took the stage.  This was my 35th show and I think that it was the best yet.  There is always something so electric  about their New York City shows since it is their hometown crowd (and where I first saw them perform too)

I loved how they did their opening – Jason came out and started the song on keys, then Alex on drums, then Andy on bass and finally Mike came out and started singing Empire State of Mind.
The setlist was fantastic – they threw in some great covers – in addition to Empire State of Mind they did Living for the City as a segway to Living a Lie, Knew You Were Trouble (which I guess is TSwift but I honestly had no clue what they were even singing) into Here Comes Trouble, Purple Rain mixed in with Hurricane and Smells Like Teen Spirit before Nobody Has To Know!

I am really not sure what they are going to do for the set tonight in Hamden, but I don’t think there is anyway this show can be topped!  It was really just amazing and I am so proud to call myself a fan of theirs and it ha been so fun to follow their career since 2008.  I just hope someday soon they end up playing seated venues ;)

Book Review: EVERY DAY IS AN ATHEIST HOLIDAY

Every Day is an Athiest Holiday is book by Penn Jillette, one half of the magic act Penn & Teller.  The book’s chapters revolve around holidays (for the most part) and Penn tells various stories about his life and career that kind of revolve around the holidays.  He starts at the end of the year and works his way forward.

There are also quite a few mentions of his stint on The Celebrity Apprentice and many of the mentions revolve around how he didn’t like Clay Aiken.  At the end of the book though he says he has nothing against him – but he goes on and on about him in the chapters – so if you are a Clay fan you might want to go into those pages with an open mind or skip them entirely.  ( I know that many Clay fans have misconstrued things that I have written about Clay, so that is why I give the warning)

It talks about his family, his career, his childhood, etc.  Definitely an intersting read for fans of Penn & Teller or more casual fans (such as myself)  He really has a way with words and I especially liked his phone conversation with one of the cast members at EPCOT… but you’ll have to check out the book to hear more about that!

About the Book

The larger, louder half of legendary magic act Penn & Teller, and New York Times-bestselling author of God, No!, is back with a new collection of spiritual rants and hilarious ravings – the perfect year-round gift, when you consider that Every Day Is an Atheist Holiday.

Book Review: Dr Seuss: The Cat Behind The Hat

Dr Seuss: The Cat Behind The Hat is about 90% art gallery and 10% biography of Ted Geisel (Dr Seuss).  It shows a lot of his artwork in “chronological-ish” order and at the same time tells a bit about his life during that era.

Did you know that during the war he drew propaganda posters? He also worked on the cartoon “Private Snafu” which I actually remember watching in History class in High School though I don’t remember the teacher mentioning that Dr Suess was involved in it.  I do remember seeing some of his posters over the years though.

There are also artwork and excerpts from some of his books as well.  Oddly enough only 1 of the one mentioned in the book I actually remember reading.  I don’t think I’ve ever read Horton Hears a Who or Oh The Place You’ll Go.  Maybe if I ever catch up on the list of books I have to review, I’ll have to sneak to the library and catch up on my Dr Suess.

Definitely an interesting read and so cool to see so much of his artwork – even sculptures of some of his characters!  Check if out if you are even the least bit interested in art and/or Dr. Suess.

About the Book

This comprehensive look at the breadth of art that Theodor Geisel created over his lifetime is an eye-opening peek behind the public persona into the real story of the man who was Dr. Seuss.

Illustrator by day, surrealist by night, Ted Geisel created a body of previously little-known work during his leisure hours that he called his “Midnight Paintings,” and which is now known as “The Secret Art of Dr. Seuss.” This irrepressible and soulful collection redefines Ted Geisel as an iconic American artist. For sixty years, his “Secret Art” allowed Geisel to expand his artistic boundaries without the confines and pressures of commercial deadlines and influences. These paintings afforded the peaceful distraction that he craved, and through this work, the tenets of surrealism-surprise and juxtaposition-energized his sensibilities. This volume exuberantly juxtaposes Geisel’s “Midnight Paintings” with his best-loved children’s books because this was how Dr. Seuss constructed his creative life-his days devoted to literature for children, his nights to letting his mind and palette wander to even stranger shores. Inevitably, Geisel created images in his private artworks that would find their way into his literary projects. Though he fiercely protected his “Secret Art” from criticism during his lifetime, his intention all along was for these works to be seen when he was gone. It is downright absurd to make an art book on Dr. Seuss that attempts a straight chronology on the life and work of this multitalented author, illustrator, painter, sculptor, political cartoonist, adman, doodler, practical joker, and Cat Behind the Hat. Chronology is, in this case, an elusive term. His life meanders between so many facets of artistic impulses, with images cross-pollinating over years and even decades, that the chronological line of his life is as dippy and curved as the architectural elements of a house in Who-ville.

Therefore, this book is “chronological-ish.” That is to say, some things come at the right time and some at the wrong time. But just as Dr. Seuss taught us to look at life “through the wrong end of a telescope,” the iconic artwork packed into these pages helps us understand that it isn’t always a straight line from here to there that matters . . . but rather the fun of the journey that really counts. Chapters include: As Early as It GetsDr. Seuss and His Midnight Paintings Very EarlyAdvertising and Editorial Work Pretty EarlyCollection of Unorthodox Taxidermy  Still EarlySecrets of the Deep Less EarlyThe War Years No Longer EarlyThe Post-War Years Later

Book Review: Lemonade Mouth Puckers Up

Lemonade Mouth Puckers Up is the sequel to Lemonade Mouth, both written by Mark Peter Hughes.  Lemonade Mouth has also been made into a Disney movie.  Going in to reading this book – I had not read the first book nor had I seen the movie (aside from a few commercials and maybe a clip here and there while watching Disney in passing).  All I really knew was that Lemonade Mouth was a band formed by some kids who go to school together.  A lot of the details about the books and the band can be found at http://lemonademouth.com.

The style of the writing in the book is interesting.  It has portions written by different band members and other people associated with the band, portions that look like it is a movie script or a play, and then regular narratives as well. Usually I don’t like when things change around like that, but somehow the set up of this book works.

The story follows the band on their summer break – getting signed, being on TV shows, starting a revolution over being yourself and not conforming to the media’s views on what is acceptable, leaving their label as well as personal struggles in the band members lives.  Olivia’s mother is in the picture after being away since she was 2.  There are relationship struggled, a family friend from India coming to visit and so much more.  Definitely enough to keep your attention so you won’t be able to put the book down! I had no problem reading it all in one sitting, and it is just under 300 pages.

While this is a book geared more at teens, it’s no secret I enjoy the occasional YA novel, especially if it revolves around a band! I think I am going to have to go back and read the first one (and check on the movie as well) and hope that there are plenty more books in store about Lemonade Mouth!

I received a free e-copy of this book from the publisher in order to write this review. I was not otherwise compensated.

Becoming Rhode Island’s most legendary band was just the beginning.

This is what happened after five outcasts in Opequonsett High School found each other, found the music, and went on to become Rhode Island’s most influential band. What’s next for this group of musical misfits? Whatever is it, it will be nothing short of revolutionary.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

MARK PETER HUGHES was born in Liverpool, England, and grew up in Barrington, Rhode Island. Mark’s obsession with music has led to many ups and downs. Setbacks include getting ejected from eighth-grade music class for throwing a spitball and the heartbreak of learning that the accordion has no place on a thrash-metal stage. Success came later when Mark fronted an alternative-rock band. Lemonade Mouth is Mark Peter Hughes’s second novel. Naughty is the New Nice!

Looking for Super cute Santa tees? Look no further than santa’s shirt shack!  This site has any shirt you could want for the holiday season. Aside from cute – some are humorous, some are ugly and some may offend you, but you should have no problem finding one (or more!) that you like for yourself or you loved ones for Christmas.

I was sent the “Naughty is the new nice” t-shirt to sample from the site.   I know what you are thinking – a t-shirt, for Christmas? Katie, you live in Connecticut and it is COLD there.  Yes, yes, it is cold here.  But one thing I noticed when I put the shirt on is that it is heavy.  Much heavier than some of my other t-shirts (which I tend to wear year round)

It is printed on 100% preshrunk cotton shirts, made from Port and Company.  The printing is strong and didn’t split or tear as I put the shirt on.  I haven’t washed it yet so I’m not sure how it will hold up in the wash, but typically I wash my printed shirts inside out and don’t have a problem.

Book Review: All About Boats

All About Boats is an A to Z book by David and Zora Allen.  David also illustrated the book.  The book has words from A to Z related to boats.  The book is geared towards kids, but there were quite a few words that I didn’t know! (Although I am not a sailer or boater or whatever the words are, if I was I would probably need to know all this!)

This would be a great book for a beginning reader who is interested in boats.  It can help teach the child to read while teaching them a lot of things they’ll need to do before hitting the open seas!

Each page has the letters written in upper and lower cases and some of David’s wonderful illustrations.

I received a free e-copy from the publisher in order to write this review. I was not otherwise compensated.

About the Book

Boating time is family time as everyone often shares both the work and the fun. Even young children are eager to help and, once their curiosity is aroused, they’ll look for ways to learn more about boating. All About Boats: A to Z shows the youngest crew members the purpose of the many things they see while boating. Each letter appears on a separate page. The featured word is explained by a verse and an illustration, showing how it fits for boating. “B” is for bell. Though there are many types of bells, a ship’s bell is used to send signals, which can be a safety factor in fog or rain. This book is a great conversational tool on the aspects of boating as families develop their onboard teamwork. For children in grades K-2.

Zora and David Aiken have collaborated on nine books, including five for children. They live on a sailboat and meander along coastal and inland waterways gathering material for their work.

The Voice – Live Playoffs

Team Adam and Team Blake take the stage tonight for the first episode of the playoffs.  2 artists from each team will be going home, 3 will make it through.  America will pick 2 of the 3, with the coaches having the final say.  I don’t understand why the contestants didn’t alternate between Team Adam and Blake and we had some go back to back instead. It seems like it would have been more fair to just alternate than end the night with two of team Adam’s?

Night 2 brought us Team XTina vs Team CeeLo. With it being up against XFactor, I opted to catch it online the next day which is why you may see some comment about skipping and bad video.  Only a couple weren’t great quality for me so I think I got the idea of the performances enough to throw together some thoughts.

Team Adam

Joselyn – Give Your Heart a Break – She seemed too breathy and I wasn’t overly impressed with her.

Melanie – Hit The Road Jack – There is something about her I don’t like. I didn’t like or dislike her performance though, I’m pretty neutral about it.

Bryan – Iris – Probably the best from Team Adam so far, but that’s not saying much.

Loren – All Around The World – This was a great song for her

Amanda – Dream On – Ah I see, Team Adam was saving the best for last. Another great performance.

Going through: Loren, Amanda, Melanie

Team Blake

Terry – Don’t Stop Believing – Terry is definitely one of the front runners in the competition and I think he did great with his performance.

Liz – Independence Day – I wasn’t really in to this performance. She seemed to be pitchy and fall over words at spots.

Cassadee – My Happy Ending – I want to dislike her, but she did a great job on that song.

Michaela – Everybody Talks – I think she is one of my favorites in the competition. If she doesnt make it through something is wrong with the show.

Julio – El Ray – I think he is taking a big risk singing in Spanish, but he has a nice voice.

Going through: Terry, Michaela, Julio

Team Christina

Adriana – Firework – great job on a difficult song

De’borah – Who Knew – Her performance kept skipping for me, but from what I heard it was good.

Devyn – Bleeding Love – great performance, I was really impressed with it

Sylvia – The One That Got Away – Her piano risk paid off. Hard to pick who will be moving on from this team after that one!

Dez – Wanted – Currently my favorite song in the world, so obviously him making it less country made me love it all the more!

Going through: Dez, Sylvia, De’borah

Team CeeLo

Cody – One More Try – Love cody! Nice performance showing off another side of him.

Diego – Bailamos – Love him but I am not sure this song was the best choice or enough for him to make it through

Mackenzie – What Makes You Beautiful – I really like him, but I don’t like him doing only re-makes of current pop stuff. I’d like to hear something different.

Nicholas – My Everything – He has a really great voice, but I’m not sure his look will get him through with America’s vote.( But I hope Im wrong!)

Trevin – What Am I Supposed To Do Without You – I prefer his performances like this, his higher register is a bit too much for me.

Going through: Mackenzie, Trevin, Nicholas

Results show.

Product Review: Pine Bros. Softish Throat Drops

Like a true fan girl, after almost every concert I end up with a sore throat from screaming song lyrics for sometimes 2 hours straight.  I’m always looking for something that will help ease the pain in the days after the show when my throat is aching.  After 15 years – Pine Bros. Softish Throat Drops are back!  I was sent Wild Cherry and Honey flavored throat drops to try out.  They are available in refillable pucks – which fit perfectly in your purse. Or your mothers purse should she decide to snatch the Honey ones from you! ;)

The drops have been a trusted brand since 1870 – soothing America’s throats for over 140 years!   They are softish and chewy – but not so much that I can’t use them with my braces, which is a good thing because I forsee a lot more sore throats coming before the braces are off! (I am going to see One Direction two nights in a row and The Wanted two days in a row one day after that, afterall!)  They are also easy to give to children, but it is recommended to only give them to kids ages 3 and up.  The best part is that each drop is only 5 calories!

I tried both the Wild Cherry and the Honey flavors (even though my mom stole the Honey ones and says that she LOVES them!)  The flavors are more muted than some other throat drops – but I kind of prefer that. I am using them to help make my throat feel better – not as if they are pieces of candy.  There is no need for them to be out of control sweet.

If you want to try the product for yourself, they are available at CVS Pharmacy.

Be sure to like Pine Bros on Facebook and follow them on twitter – they hold lots of contests :)

The XFactor – Top 12

This week the top 12 perform and America gets to vote! They are also bragging about a HUGE TWIST… and they will be having another finalist return because they made a mistake… so we will now have a Top 13… welcome back Diamond White! (Certainly not who I would have brought back, but, ok.)

This week’s theme: Songs from The Movies

Arin Ray – American Boy – I think this was a strong performance from him and a good way to kick of the week.

Paige Thomas – Take My Breath Away – Not as impressed with this performance. I don’t know what happened because I do like her but her singing was not the best I’ve heard from her.

Vino Alan – When A Man Loves a Woman – So good! And I loved the East Coast shout out from him as well.

Emblem 3 – My Girl / California Girls – I could have gone without them trying to make it sound like One Direction… but.. oh, I love them.

Beatrice Miller – Iris – There is just something about her I don’t really like.

Jennel Garcia – I Love Rock N Roll – She is good, but I think she got too shouty at some parts. Not enough to warrant going home though.

Tate Stevens – Dead or Alive – He is a strong singer. I see that LA is trying to keep all his performances scaled back.

Lyric 145 – Supercalifragiliciousexpialodocious (sp?) –  Freaking. awesome.

Diamond White – I Have Nothing – going for it all with this comeback performance, I  see.  She is really good. Whitney good? Probably not. But she should stick around for a while.

Cece Frey – Eye of the Tiger – Oh hey the Leopard tattoos are back. And the ability to sing is STILL MISSING!  (Why did Cece get through and not Jillian?)

Carly Rose – It Will Rain – A nice stripped back performance from Carly Rose. She has such a powerful voice and I know I’m totally biased, but I love her.

Jason Brock – I Believe I Can Fly – I think I am over Jason at this point.

Fifth Harmony – 1000 years – Not a fan of the song but I am hoping that they go somewhere because we really need a poppy girl group again!

My bottom 3 are Paige, Jason and Beatrice.  With most likely Paige being the one to go home.

The results show kicked off with ONE DIRECTION! Yeah!

Safe & Through – Arin Ray!

Also through – Paige Thomas (Wow I stink at picking!!)

Next through – Diamond White

Also back next week – Vino Alan!

Next act through – Jennel Garcia

Also going to the top 12 – Emblem 3

So 6 of our 12 are through…

MORE ONE DIRECTION!

Another 5 will go through leaving 2 to sing for survival!

Safe and through – Carly Rose! (whew!)

Also through – Tate Stevens

Next through – Beatrice Miller (another pick I thought would be in the bottom)

Also through – Lyric 145

Leaves us with CeCe Frey, Jason Brock and 5th Harmony

The next one through – Fifth Harmony

Jason and CeCe must sing for their life.

Well, I got 1 out of the bottom right (even with them having a bottom 2 and me picking 3!) but to be quite honest, I’d rather see CeCe leave than Jason!

CeCe sings You Haven’t Seen The Last Of Me. I’ll give her a bit of a pass because she is full of nerves, but it wasn’t that great, even with the pass.

Jason sings Total Eclipse of the Heart. He doesn’t seem to be affected by nerves.

From those 2 performances I would send home CeCe. Let’s see what the judges do…

Demi is sending home Jason.

LA is sending home CeCe.

Britney is sending home CeCe

Simon is sending home Jason.

We go to deadlock and the act going home will be the act that got the lowest number of votes from America’s votes.

The act with the lowest number of votes is – Jason.

I am bummed to see him go, but I am bittersweet since he was one of my bottom picks.

The standings!

#12 – CeCe Frey
#11 – Arin Ray
#10 – Beatrice Miller
#09 –  Lyric 145
#08 – Paige Thomas
#07 – Jennel Garcia
#06 – Emblem 3 (I agree w/ Simon thought they’d be #1!)
#05 – Fifth Harmony
#04 – Diamond White
#03 – Vino Alan
#02 – Carly Rose
#01 – Tate Stevens
I am a little bit confused with these votes. I am happy Carly Rose is so high, but I really wasn’t expecting that!  And I thought Emblem 3 would be higher, for sure.  Certainly higher than Fifth Harmony.  I wonder if they will continue to tell us who is where in the rankings. Probably not, but it would be interesting!

Book Review: Star Watchers

Untitled

FREE STAR WATCHERS EBOOK, EDGAR ALLAN POE INSPIRED, 2 DAYS ONLY 11/18-11/19/2012: at Amazon.com

Star Watchers: Inspirational, Romantic and Dark Poems that Merge to Tell a Single Story is a book by Kelly Vang.  This book is interesting because on the surface it contains over 50 different poems.  Several of the poems have characters that overlap and tell another story, so you have to pay attention.  The poems are written in an Edgar Allan Poe inspired way and if you enjoy his work (like I do) I think you will enjoy these poems.

The challenge is to figure out which poems piece together the larger story, called Star Watchers. The key is to pay close attention to the reappearance of characters and phrases; particularly, the series of poems also entitled, Star Watchers.

My favorite of the poems was called “The Fall”, I seemed to relate to that one the most.

This is definitely an interesting approach to a book – with only some of the poems interlinking to create a completely different story.  It definitely made you pay extra attention and think while you were reading each of the individual poems.

About the Book

Star Watchers uses fantasy, horror, and inspirational elements to provoke new ways of seeing the human condition. The poetry depicts unhappy, nervous, bitter and clever individuals; they found themselves in both triumphs and defeats. Unfortunately, these characters often met with the fate of tragedy and unexpected twist. Their misfortunes serve not only to entertain but also to inform its readership. Each poem and each character draws out a meaningful message for readers to take away with them. Yet, after piecing the poems together, there is an even bigger story–left for readers to determine for themselves.
