Honor Society at Showcase Live

Last night Honor Society played at Showcase Live in Foxboro, MA.  If you were one of the first 50 ticket buyers you got to go to a preshow M&G with all 3 of the acts from the tour – Katelyn Tarver, Action Item and Honor Society.

Alex was really the only one that talked to me (aside from a hello nice to see you from the others) – but he was talking to me about a show I wasn’t even at! (CT last year – I skipped it because of Hanson’s 5 of 5 the same night) I think he decided I was there since Lauren and Christine were.. haha. In his defense, very rarely are Lauren and I not together at a show!

I Love Monsters was the first opening act of the night, followed by Katelyn Tarver and then Action Item.  Then it was time for the main event – Honor Society!  They have not toured in over a year so it had been a LONG while since we saw them (with the exception of Mike and Jason who performed in November – but even that was a LONG time ago!)
While the set was short – only about an hour – it was jam packed with great music and was a ton of fun.  By preordering the new Honor Society EP we got a chance to get a photo with them at the end of the nigh.  It was very quick and we didn’t get to talk with the guys as much as we would have liked – but it is always nice that they remember us and ask when they will be seeing us again (tomorrow for me!)

I think one of the highlights of the night for me was hearing the Nobody Has To Know (my favorite HS Song) / Jay Z 99 problems mashup.  Just when I thought that song could not get any better!

After the show, we drove about an hour out from the venue (It was a little over 2 hours away from here) and stopped for gas and at this point Christine realized that she did not have her cell phone.  I called it twice and when we heard nothing ringing we figured it must have fallen out of her pocket when we went to the restroom after the show.  We sat at the gas station for about 20 minutes figuring out what to do.  We figured if the movie theater definitely had the phone – we should probably go back and get it, even though it meant an extra 2 hours on to our trip.

Lauren called the movie theater where we went to the restroom and they said that no one had turned in a phone and it was not anywhere on the floor in the bathroom.  Christine was becoming more and more panicked so Lauren told her to get in the passenger seat and she would drive back to Christine’s (they had been planning to switch driving anyhow) while Christine tried to figure out what she needed to do with the phone company to get the phone turned off.  When Lauren went to get in to the drivers seat – what was sitting there? Christine’s phone.  We didn’t hear it ringing because she had her volume turned down a bit AND she was sitting on it.

Just another ridiculous story to add to the Honor Society files…

Hanson at Gaylord National June 18, 2011

Saturday evening I went to see Hanson at the Gaylord National in National Harbor, MD.  (My 100th concert in a state other than my home state of CT!) Before leaving we found out that National Harbor is actually Oxon Hill, MD! Luckily we figured that out because I don’t think the GPS would have gotten us there otherwise.

We were able to purchase a packaged deal which included a one night stay at the hotel, tickets to see Hanson and a M&G pass for after the show.  It seemed pretty reasonably priced (only and extra $10 per person for the M&G!) so we went for the full VIP treatment.

Fresh 94.7 was hosting the event, and I have to say they were completely organized and everyone that I had met working for them was incredibly nice as well.  The staff at the hotel was also really nice too!

Justin Trawick (http://www.justintrawick.com/) was the opener and did about 8 songs.  I enjoyed him, however the majority of the crowd made it fairly obvious that they were there to see Hanson by rudely talking through most of his set.

Next up it was time for Hanson.  They came out really quickly after Justin’s set and I think they were not prepared to be hitting the stage so soon! They did a 10 song set and chatted a little bit with the crowd.  The airline had ruined one of Isaac’s guitar on their trip and they talked a bit about that and dedicated “Strong Enough To Break” to the lost guitar, Pablo.  On the line “play like broken records..” Isaac sang “Play like broken guitars”

After the set we waited a bit for the M&G to start.  My friend had a picture of a billboard that is in PA that says “Even though her favorite band is still Hanson” which is part of their ad campaign that features a bunch of billboards on why you should still propose to your girlfriend “even though”.  Isaac and Taylor didn’t seem to understand what was going on so I tried to explain “You still propose.. even though her favorite band is still Hanson” and they still didn’t quite get it.  Zac, however, seemed to understand more after my explanation so we talked a bit about how is it a bad thing to like Hanson (no) and he wasn’t offended by the billboard but wasn’t exactly sure how to take it either.  At least now I can joke that Zac and I talked about getting engaged! (Though.. not to each other.  He is happily married and I’m… happily single?)

The radio station took photos of us while we were talking to the guys, we weren’t allowed anything posed.  I am (not so) patiently awaiting for those to be added to the station’s website!

The Voice – Semi Finals

Last night we found out who from Adam and Cee Lo’s team would be advancing.  It was kind of strange because all of them had to prepare a song for this week, but 4 of them ended up going home and didn’t get to perform it.  This is probably why there will be a results show on tomorrow and a finale results show next week.

From Team Cee Lo, America saved Vicci.  Cee Lo saved Nakia.  My picks are 6 for 6.  From Team Adam, America saved Javier and Adam shocked me by saving Casey.  What?!  Although 7 for 8 with my picks ain’t bad 😉

Up first  from Team Christina was Frenchie who sang Madonna’s “Like A Prayer” I thought she did really well with it.

Nakia did Adam Lambert’s “Whatya Want From Me” and slowed it down a bit.  Adam (Levine) said he had never heard the song before.  Apparently Adam doesn’t listen to the radio… ever.

Dia sang REM’s “Losing My Religion” and was great.

Casey butchered I Will Always Love You.  Really not sure why she is in the competition but at least it is less competition for Javier!

Beverly sang The Thrill Is Gone and did really well with it, but I still think I prefer Frenchie over Beverly.

Javier did an amazing rendition of Coldplay’s Fix You and he took off his hat! *gasp*!

Xenia did The Script’s The Man Who Can’t Be Moved and once again Adam didn’t know the song.

Vicci closed out the show with a very high energy performance of Florence and the Machine’s Dog Days Are Over.

Maroon 5 and Christina Aguilera debuted their new song “Moves like Jagger” and Blake Shelton performed his latest single, “Honey Bee” and was joined by Dia and Xenia.

Voting closed at 10am this morning… I got in 10 votes for Frenchie, Vicci, Javier and Xenia via NBC.com, 10 call in votes for Javier and an iTunes vote for Javier and Vicci. One from each team will move on during tonight’s live show.  The coaches got 100 points to split between their team and America’s votes will be weighed the same as the coaches.

It will be interesting to see if America chooses the same 4 to advance as they did in the earlier rounds.  I am thinking that they will, but I’m not sure if they will tell us who specifically America picked or if we’ll just know the grand total with the coaches votes as well.  My picks are Vicci from Team Cee Lo, Javier from Team Adam, Frenchie from Team Christina and Xenia from Team Blake (although Team Blake was the hardest for me to choose, so I wouldn’t mind if Dia made it through instead)

Next week is the finale of the show!  I’m sad that it kind of went so quickly once we got in to the live performance rounds!

Book Review: An Unlikely Suitor by Nancy Moser

I have to start of this review by saying – I loved this book!  I read almost all of it the first day I started it – and if the day had more hours in it I probably would have finished it all in one go.

The story is about Lucy Scarpelli, a seamstress whose family is being evicted from their home.  Her aunt and uncle decide to move from New York to Oklahoma, leaving Lucy and her mother and her sister to figure out on their own a place to live.

Lucy manages to find a man that not only will rent them an apartment, but will also give the three ladies jobs as seamstresses and hat makers at his dress shop!  While working in the shop, Lucy meets Rowena, a woman of high society who needs dresses made so that she can court with Edward.  Edward and Rowena’s parents want them to marry each other although Rowena is not sure anyone will want to marry her because she is “crippled” (She hurt her hip/leg in an accident and walks with a limp)  Rowena goes along with her parents idea even though she is really in love with Morrie – but he is part of “the help” and therefore off limits for her to pursue.

Rowena quickly forms a friendship with Lucy, as Lucy discovers a way to make her dresses quite flattering on Rowena.  When Rowena and her family head off to Newport, RI for the summer, Rowena rips apart her dresses and demands that Lucy come out right away to repair them.  While there Lucy meets “Dante”, who saves her from the Cliff Walk when she fell.  Lucy and Dante sneak out to meet each other and send letters to each other.

Meanwhile, several of the other ladies want Lucy to help make them costumes for the Vanderbilt’s ball, so Lucy’s mom and sister are brought in to help with making them.  It seems like once everyone is there – everybody starts falling in love and the story takes some twists and turns! I won’t give any more away 🙂

I liked that at the end of the book the author included a “Fact or Fiction” section where she discussed how things were in the late 1800s and how she decided to pick and choose where people lived, what their apartments looked like, etc.  This was a nice touch and was very interesting to read after I had finished the book.  She also included some photos of typical outfits for the women in this time period so it made it a bit easier to picture what Lucy was creating and what the women of high society were wearing during the book.

I was given a free copy of this book from the publisher in order to do a review.  All opinions are 100% mine and I was not compensated in any other way or asked to write a positive review.

Group Story PhotoBook

When I was approached by Group Story to review their photobooks, I knew that I wanted to call in the help of some of my fellow Hanson Fans and get a group together to chronicle all our different trips to Tulsa, OK for the May 14th Members Only Event.

I opted to go with a small group, myself + 5 others, but Group Story allows you to invite as many people as you want!

All your photos are shared and all the pages are shared with your group.  If you missed that “kodak moment” and someone else happened to capture it, you can easily incorporate their photo on to your page.  You also get to  choose which pages you’d like in your book based on all of the pages created by your group which is definitely a really cool aspect. It is possible that while your entire group worked together on the pages – no two books would end up exactly alike!

I could see this website being great for school – get the parents together to put a book together based on field trips or assemblies, etc where everyone is sitting in different areas and be able to get all aspects covered.  It would also be great for family reunions when you can’t be everywhere at once snapping photos or even on group vacations!

Uploading and creating pages is super simple.  The uploads went quickly and you could arrange your pages based on the number of photos you’d like to have on the page.  I tried to break down each aspect of my trip (way there, way home, sightseeing while there, etc) and see how many photos I had from each and then create a page with that many photos.  It also has the option of a page of just text if you are looking to add some journal elements from the trip.

Group Story is definitely a site I plan on using again to create more books with friends!

Book Review & Giveaway: Where Will You Go From Here? by Valorie Burton

When I first requested “Where Will You Go from Here?” I was wondering that myself.  I had been out of work for nearly a year and was down and out.  However, by the time the book came I had started working again and was in a much better mind set.  But now after reading it, I know how to try and cope and overcome any other obstacles that might come my way.

The book is filled with a lot of personal stories (there is one at the end of I believe every chapter) and how that person overcame their problems and what lessons they learned along the way.

Each chapter also ends with questions for yourself.  The author notes that answering these questions may bring all the anger and the sadness back to you, but that it will end up helping you recover and move forward.

One of the important lessons of the book was that you shouldn’t ask “Why Me?”, that just puts a negative spin on things and you need to find the positive to help you overcome the obstacles and move forward with your life.  Another lesson that I tend to overlook is to not be afraid to ask for help! If you have 3-4 good friends who are willing to help you out when you are in bad times then you know you have good friends and you know that you will be ok and able to move forward.

Book Review: Area 51 by Annie Jacobsen

Since I was young, I’ve always been interested in outer space, the solar system and of course aliens.  When I saw that I could have the opportunity to review Area 51, I of course jumped at it!  When the book arrived in the mail – I was shocked at its size.  It is 500+ pages and jam packed with secrets and stories from people who worked at Area 51 over the years.  Annie decided to write this book when her husband’s uncle’s wife’s sister’s husband (you follow?) said that he had a good story for her.  She was always under the impression that he had worked designing airplane parts, but he actually worked as a physicist and played a major role in developing aerial espionage for the CIA!  He had to keep this information secret for 50 years, but in 2007 the CIA had just declassified it so he was able to talk about it.  Once she found out that Area 51 was real she was on a mission and talked to many, many people who shared their Area 51 stories.

Area 51 is An Uncensored History of America’s Top Secret Military base.  It contains 21 chapters, all of which explain in depth some of the different projects that were going on there.  It touches on the conspiracy theory that the moon landing never happened and that it was all orchestrated at Area 51 and also of course about the aliens landing in Roswell.  It also has 2 sections of black and white photos – some of which were never before published.  It is definitely a very interesting read and I would recommend it for anyone who is interested in learning more about the secrets of Area 51, space exploration, etc.  The stories were very interesting to me and kept me hooked on this book (in fact, I read it in 3 sitting which is a bit of a record for me considering its size!) and wanting to finish it.

This book can be purchased (and previewed!) at  Amazon.com

I was given a free copy of this book to review from Little, Brown.  All thoughts and opinions are my own and I was not compensated in any way for this post.
