Book Review: Quentin Tarantino Interviews

This book is made up of various interviews with filmmaker Quentin Tarantino.  Interviews were compiled from the early 90s until just last year, including an interview about his most recent release – Django Unchained.

Tarantino is certainly an interesting guy so it was interesting to read all these interviews with him over the years – even though I don’t think I had ever seen any of his films.

The book starts by a timeline of his life – he was born, goes to school, etc. He begins studying and then begins making movies and it has the timeline for the movies he has written, what he was working on, etc. So you will be all caught up if like me, you don’t know too much about him.  This is followed by his filmography.  Then everything gets interesting with the interviews.

Definitely an interesting read – probably more so for a film buff.

About the Book

“Rather than spend $600,000 for film school, spend $6,000 for a movie. That’s the best film school in the world.”

Here, in his own colorful, slangy words, is the true American Dream saga of a self-proclaimed “film geek,” with five intense years working in a video store, who became one of the most popular, recognizable, and imitated of all filmmakers. His dazzling, movie-informed work makes Quentin Tarantino’s reputation, from his hipster breakout film, Reservoir Dogs (1992), through Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003) and Kill Bill: Vol. 2 (2004), his enchanted homages to Asian action cinema, to his rousing tribute to guys-on-a-mission World War II movie, Inglourious Basterds (2009). For those who prefer a more mature, contemplative cinema, Tarantino provided the tender, very touching Jackie Brown (1997). A masterpiece?Pulp Fiction (1994). A delightful mash of unabashed exploitation and felt social consciousness? His latest opus, Django Unchained (2012).

From the beginning, Tarantino (b. 1963)—affable, open, and enthusiastic about sharing his adoration of movies—has been a journalist’s dream. Quentin Tarantino: Interviews, revised and updated with eleven new interviews, is a joy to read cover to cover because its subject has so much interesting and provocative to say about his own movies and about cinema in general, and also about his unusual life. He is frank and revealing about growing up in Los Angeles with a single, half-Cherokee mother, and dropping out of ninth grade to take acting classes. Lost and confused, he still managed a gutsy ambition: young Quentin decided he would be a filmmaker.

Tarantino has conceded that Ordell (Samuel L. Jackson), the homicidal African American con man inJackie Brown, is an autobiographical portrait. “If I hadn’t wanted to make movies, I would have ended up as Ordell,” Tarantino has explained. “I wouldn’t have been a postman or worked at the phone company. . . . I would have gone to jail.”

Vegas Trip: Chippendales

DSC04794

Jaymes & James from The Amazing Race was the only reason I wanted to see Chippendales. Thursday we had originally planned on seeing the show, but Jaymes had tweeted and said he would be in LA. Sad! Friday we hoped he would be back and we freaked out a little when he tweeted that he was flying back. We decided to get the 10:30 tickets so I could a) see Boyz II Men too and b) if he didn’t make it in time for the earlier show we were good.  We freaked out even more when he tweeted ME and said that he would be back in the show that night!

After Boyz II Men we headed to Harrah’s and hoped the Rio shuttle once again and made it to the Chippendales theater just as doors were opening.  No photos were allowed, of course (nudity) but the show was a lot of fun even though I didn’t really think Jaymes and James were in it all that much and there was a drunk girl standing and grinding the chair in front of her all damn night. (After the show her friends were carrying her out and she could barely stand)  Jaymes sings a lot though during the show!

After the show for $20 you can get your photo taken with all the guys and they print it up for you right on the spot! I thanked Jaymes for his tweet and he said no problem and that he was glad I made it to the show.  Then we picked up our photos, I stocked up on merch (of course) and it was time to head back and pack up all my stuff!

Book Review: Can’t Be Arsed

arsedCan’t Be Arsed (Half Arsed Shorter Edition) is a list of 63 things to NOT do before you die.  A play off of the bucket lists and “X amount of things to do before you die”, this book is the opposite with a list of 63 popular items from peoples lists and comical (and sometimes logical) reasons why you shouldn’t want to do them and shouldn’t add them to your bucket list.  Although humorous, there are still a few items in the book I couldn’t be swayed on and are still on my bucket list.  There were also a few items in the book that I had already done – so I guess you can’t change my mind on those items either!

Certainly a quick and amusing read and a cute idea. But I’m still keeping my bucket list.

About the Book

We are forever being ordered around – 100 things to do before  you’re 30; 50 albums you must own; change your life in two weeks. Why –  is this an increasingly desperate search for happiness? Perhaps you can  in fact attain happiness not by going anywhere or doing anything but  instead by actually reducing your ambitions. This is the philosophy  behind ’63 Things Not To Do Before You Die’. Each chapter begins with a  diatribe, followed by a detailed look at the alternative side of the  most frequently cited must do’s, giving off-putting facts and statistics to quote at holier-than-thou thrillseekers. Wish-fulfillment lists take heed…                               About the Author              Richard Wilson is head of comedy for Hat Trick Productions and  executive producer of Have I Got News For You. He has also previously  worked on Never Mind the Buzzcocks and Room 101. His first book for  Portico, Can’t Be Arsed: 101 Things Not To Do Before You Die was published in 2008.

Vegas Trip: Drum Lessons w/ Ryan!

duckslake

Ryan from Recycled Percussion is doing drum lessons for free if you donate at least $60 to Save The Children.  If you’re in the Vegas area you should check out his website and see about getting lessons!   On Friday, Kim and I got our lesson at one of the parks in Vegas.  It had a lake and some really, really obnoxious ducks that either really liked or really hated our drumming and let it be known! Turns out I am the better drummer (woohoo) but have no regard for the tempo whatsoever. Which earned me the nickname “The Speed Demon” from Ryan.  Oops.  The lessons were fun and I learned a lot.  Ryan’s website is www.drumforthechildren.com

Book Review: The Secrets at the Chocolate Mansion

The Secrets at the Chocolate Mansion is actually the 3rd book in a series, but I didn’t find that I was lost having not read either of the first two book when I decided to pick up this one.  This is the type of book I absolutely would have loved reading as a kid – and still enjoyed a lot as an adult.  The book follows Maggie Brooklyn who is a bit of an amateur detective.  The book starts with her and her twin brother and their dates at their friend Sonya’s Sweet Shop.  While they are there, they have pie that is salty instead of sweet, the window is shattered and a note saying “take your cookies elsewhere” is found outside attached to a box of girl scout cookies.

Meanwhile, she has a dog sitting business on the side and one of her clients has moved into a mansion that is believed to be haunted.  Not only is she now walking a dog from the mansion, the moms of one of the dogs want her to babysit their son for a night as well.  He says his friend Margaret comes to visit him at night if he leaves his closet door open.  Margaret is the name of the 19 year old girl that died in the mansion years ago.  Could the boy be seeing ghosts? Are there really such a thing as ghosts?

Maggie has the two mysteries she is trying to solve – all while trying to not freak out about the ghost in the mansion.  She does end up figuring everything out and things end happily ever after.

I thought this was a cute book and it had a couple of  good sub stories going in it and a lot of characters for Maggie to bump into and help her with her investigation.  She seemed to solve the mysteries without getting into too much trouble as well – something some other amateur sleuths I’ve read about have had problems with.  A great YA book to read in the fall – since it has a Halloween theme to it with the ghost.

About the Book

The third book in the Maggie Brooklyn Mysteries—with a ghostly twist!

Take your cookies elsewhere.” That’s what the note said in neat, block-like print, attached to a box of Girl Scout Cookies. Someone is out to sabotage the new sweet shop in the neighborhood, and Maggie Brooklyn is on the case. If only she weren’t so freaked out herself lately. Maggie’s new dogsitting gig has her and her twin brother Finn hanging out in what they fear may be a real haunted mansion. And it’s hard to solve real life mysteries when you think you’re seeing ghosts!

LESLIE MARGOLIS is the author of the successful Annabelle Unleashed series, including Boys Are Dogs, Girls Acting Catty, Everybody Bugs Out, and One Tough Chick; and two other books in the Maggie Brooklyn Mysteries: Girl’s Best Friend and Vanishing Acts. Book Review: Maps / Mapas Spanish/English Learning Book

mapas

MAPS / MAPAS is a bilingual book for children.  The book features a young girl who asks “Where Do You Live?” But in the illustration it has the Spanish translation – “Donde Vives?” Several other children answer her with English and Spanish answers so that the children can learn all the different places you can live in both English and Spanish.  After asking where they live (a house, the city, etc) she gets more specific and asks what city do you live in? “En que ciudad vives?” What state, etc.

It’s a really cute book and a great way to teach children basic questions you would ask when you meet someone new in both English and Spanish.

I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

About the Book

This book is the SECOND in a series of bilingual books for children to either learn Spanish or English.
The book is accompanied by a website were the book is available in an animated format as well as many games to practice the vocabulary.

Please note! THIS BOOK IS EITHER FOR YOUNG CHILDREN OR FOR LANGUAGE INSTRUCTION!

Book Review: The Solar System through Infographics

The Solar System through Infographics is a lot of great information about the Solar System but everything is geared towards pictures with little text as compared to your usual solar system book. I am much more of a visual learner so I definitely like this approach and I wish that we had more books like this when I was a kid!

The book has a lot of great illustrations and also is jam packed with great information as well like – how much would your dog weigh on different planets?

If you have a more visual learner who needs to see things rather than read things and they are looking to learn more about the solar system, definitely check out this book. It is under 40 pages but has a lot of great detail and info in it!

I received a free e-copy of this book in order to write this review, I was not otherwise compensated.

About the Book

The enormous facts about our solar system can make your head spin! You hear about huge distances (like the 483 million miles separating the sun and Jupiter), huge timelines (it’s been 14 billion years since the big bang), and even huger mysteries (why the universe is expanding).

How can all these big numbers and concepts make more sense? Infographics! The charts, maps, and illustrations in this book tell a visual story to help you better understand key concepts about our solar system. Crack open this book to explore mind-boggling questions such as:
• How long would it take a beam of light to cross the universe?
• What exactly would happen if you were sucked into a black hole?
• Does alien life reside somewhere in our galaxy?

The answers are sure to be out of this world!

The Super Science Infographics series:

Infographics are a rapidly growing means of communicating ideas and information in visually digestible formats. Each book in the Super Science Infographics series uses this rising medium to provide an overview of various science topics. Stats, cool visuals, and did-you-know factoids offer high-interest appeal while also drawing in those looking for data.
