Book Review: Native American Heroes: Osceola, Tecumseh & Cochise

nativeNative American Heroes is geared towards child readers, but considering I am not so hot when it comes to history, I like to read these books because they make things easier to understand and remember than your typical history book.  This book features Osceola, Tecumseh& Cochise and starts off with a pronunciation key with the various tribes and languages that will be featured throughout the book.

Some of the stories are not confirmed and come from legend, the book points this out in the beginning that anything that isn’t known to be fact will say something like “legend says” before it to help differentiate what is true and what is from stories.

Full of interesting information and easy to read, if you are looking to find out more about Native American Heroes, this is the book for you.

About the Book

Osceola, Cochise, and Tecumseh are three Native American heroes who fought valiantly for their land and for their people. This book is divided into three parts–each part recounting the life of one of these great heroes. Their true stories are emotionally gripping and tragic, and Ann McGovern handles delicate topics, such as violence and racism, expertly for young readers. The narrative text is supplemented by black-and-white original source materials throughout (i.e. photographs, maps, portraits, a newspaper article).

96.5 TIC Acoustic Christmas Show

I was super excited for the TIC Christmas show because Backstreet Boys were headlining. I was also able to get a VIP M&G package from the BSB fanclub so I’d be meeting them before the show.  Then winter storm Ashford decided that he was going to come at 9am and get the worst at 7pm and turn to freezing rain at midnight.  With the show at 7:30, it would be horrible once we all got out of the show.  But as they say – the show must go on! and no one was canceling the show.  I knew I could make it up there and back for the M&G before 7pm hit.  So I got there for VIP check in which was supposed to be at 4:20 but ended up being a bit later than that.  Basically from 4pm – 6pm I was standing. And most of that time without anything to lean on – and yet somehow I survived it. (Very proud of myself because I was seriously doubting my ability to do that!)

We checked in and got our VIP pass and then waited in line to get in to the room to meet BSB.  While we were waiting, they all walked by us from I guess sound check or backstage or something.  The line seemed to be going fairly quickly once it actually got moving.  Everything was super organized, you had enough time to hug all the guys, chit chat a little bit and then get your photo.  This was individual photos too which was great! (and why I did it.  Usually VIP individual pics is like $500 and this show was a bargain at $150)  The order was Brian, Howie, AJ, Nick and Kevin.  I stood by Nick and AJ for the picture. It was funny listening to everyone chatting trying to figure out where they’d stand and hope that they didn’t get rearranged before we got there.  After we got our pic we were given a signed Christmas card from the guys that is done so you can put your photo on the front of the card.  Cute! But I’ll probably just end up scrapping the autograph or framing it 🙂

After the M&G (about 6:10) I had intended to go home but bumped into a family friend who works at the venue.  When I told her I was leaving she said she would take me home and I could crash at her house until the weather got better the next day.  We checked that my car would be OK there overnight and then I told my parents not to expect me.  She said if it got real bad they might leave early so I told her to find me if they did and I’d leave early too.  (Then I ended up switching seats and she couldn’t find me during the show – but they did end up staying!)

Plain White T’s started the show off and did a set of 1,2,3,4 Should’ve Gone To Bed, Giving Tree, Hey  There Deliliah and Rhythm of Love. They chatted with the audience a lot and were pretty good, they were the only act at the show I had no yet seen before.

Next up was Gavin DeGraw. I was kind of bummed he wasn’t later in the show – he puts on a great show! He even was in the crowd for a few songs.  His set was In Love With A Girl, Make a Move, Chariot, Mirrors (probably not a good idea to sing a Justin Timberlake song at a show with mostly BSB fans… from what I heard of reactions around me lol!) I Don’t Wanna Be, Best I Ever Had,  and Not Over You.

Then it was time for Avril.  Groan.  She kept walking off the stage and I think she was mad at the sound guys because a few times there was a lot of feedback when she was singing. Her set was Here’s To Never Growing Up, Girlfriend, Sk8er Boi, What The Hell, Black Star, Let Me Go, My Happy Ending and ended her set with Complicated.

Next up with Sara Bareilles who also puts on a great show. Her set was (sorry if I don’t get all the names right) Chasing The Sun, Gonna Get Over You, Many the Mines, Love Song, I Choose You, Gravity, Manhattan, King of Anything, & Brave. She seemed to really like the crowd and the acoustics of the room and split us up to sing a few times and was overall very funny and put on a great set.

Then it was time for the Backstreet Boys! They played until just before midnight and did The Call, As Long As You Love me, Show Em (What You’re Made Of), In A World Like This, Safest Place to Hide, 10000 Promises, Madeleine, Quit Playin Games, It’s Christmas Time Again, I Want It That Way, Everybody (Backstreet’s Back).

After 4 songs they broke it down to an acoustic set or their “insurance policy” where they played instruments so that they have a backup plan when they can no longer dance. It was pretty neat to see them play Quit Playin’ Games during this set!

The show was a ton and fun – though I’m not sure I could have made it back to my house without completely panicking if I had stayed the whole time without an alternate plan!

Book Review: All Fired Up

firedup

Shane is the new pastry chef at Cara’s soon to be brother in law’s restaurant.  Cara works as an event planner for them.  After a trip to Vegas, Shane and Cara end up married.  Once Cara realizes what she has done, she wants an annulment.  Shane seems to think that they can make it work if they get to know each other a bit better.  But there is one big secret that he is keeping – Cara’s soon to be brother in law, Jack, a famous chef is his half-brother. Jack has no idea but Shane has been trying very hard to get the job to work with him so that he can finally meet him. There’s also the new secret – Cara doesn’t want anyone to know that they’ve gotten married.

Cara get annulment papers but her relationship with Shane starts heating up.  She tries to fight it as much as she can but she knows inside it is what she wants.  Once Shane signs the papers and the truth about his paternity comes out, Cara isn’t sure if he was just using her or if he ever cared for her at all – when she has been falling in love with him.

This was a good book, but I couldn’t help but get SO annoyed by Cara.  She obviously has a lot of control issues and needs to be in control of everything. She thinks her family hates her because she wasn’t around when her mother got sick with cancer.  Turns out, she was battling anorexia and didn’t want anyone to know and that is why she didn’t come home. Shane seems to be willing to accept her for who she is, but she can’t accept herself which I think is what initially causes her to not want to be with Shane. But here is this hot guy who wants you for you and you keep walking away!

I thought the end was going to take a bit different turn than it did – but I was happy with how everything was resolved.

Book Review: Baby Santa and the Missing Reindeer

Baby Santa and the Missing Reindeer is another great Baby Santa story.  This time the reindeer are missing and Baby Santa needs to travel the world to find them all! Each of them is in a different country and in addition to an illustration of something from the location that the reindeer is in, there is also a map with a dot on it so you can easily see and learn where these other places are on a map!  These Baby Santa books are super adorable and a great addition to your child’s stocking this Christmas!

Book Review: Baby Santa’s Worldwide Christmas Adventure

Of all the Baby Santa books I read this week, I have to say that I think Baby Santa’s Worldwide Christmas Adventure was my favorite.  When Santa goes to find his sled to get ready to deliver all the gifts, he finds it missing!  The elves had brought it in to be fixed but were now worried that it wouldn’t be finished in time for Christmas Eve!  What will they do?

Well, of course, Baby Santa has an idea!  Even though the sled is magic – can’t they just use the way that everyone else gets around to do the trick?  Cars, plans, etc?  Santa thinks that this just might work, but he will need someone to come along to help carry all the gifts.  Of course – Baby Santa is ready to go!

The book ends with some famous transportation from around the world – double decker buses, gondolas, etc.  With some really cute illustrations to go along.

Product Review: Fage Greek Yogurt

fage

Recently, as a bzzagent, I was sent some coupons to try out Fage (pronounced Fa-Yeh).  I have tried other greek yogurt before but I have to say I think Fage is my new favorite.  My only trouble was trying to get the honey into the yogurt. If you scoop it with a spoon, or squeeze it, it will go in but not all of it.  My mom suggested maybe it should come with a tiny spoon that you can fit in to it to scoop out all the goodness because “that’s the best part!”

Since 1926, FAGE has been making delicious yogurt from a simple family recipe of milk, live active cultures and cream — no added sweeteners, thickeners or powders here. This approach, along with the rich and creamy results it yields, has made FAGE the #1 brand of yogurt in Greece.

FAGE Total Split Cups continue the tradition, pairing the classic FAGE family Greek yogurt recipe with natural and flavorful fruit toppings for a perfectly portable, healthy snack that can be enjoyed anytime and anywhere. Rich in protein and low in calories, FAGE Total Split Cups are a deliciously good-for-you alternative to other sweet snacks like pastries, ice cream or pudding.

Book Review: Merry Humbug Christmas

humbugMerry Humbug Christmas is 2 books in one.  The first story is Once Upon a Jingle Bell.  Joss hates Christmas and every years gets away with her best friend Reese to avoid the holiday.  She was born on Christmas and he parents named her Merry Christmas – a name that went great with her last name, Snow.  Due to this she’s not much of a fan of the holidays and with her parents both having passed on, there is no reason to stick around for the holiday.  She had Reese had made a pact and they would spend every Christmas together avoiding Christmas – unless one of them got engaged.  Well, when Joss calls up Reese to book their trip on the “Bah Humbug” cruise – Reese says she can’t go – so Joss of course knows that she and her boyfriend have gotten engaged!  Reese goes off to spend the holidays with her in-laws and Joss heads off for the cruise alone.  Except that her Humbug cruise was canceled and instead she is booked on a 12 days of Christmas cruise!  Just what she wants to deal with.

She considers just hiding in her room and tries to find flights back from the cruise stops to LA but has no luck.  Except that depending on how you look at things that was actually tremendous luck.  She meets a cute guy on the cruise (actually, she meets him when he barrels into her before she boards) and they immediately seem to hit it off and hang out.  But she isn’t sure if she wants to be with Patrick after the cruise – but a phone call to Reese makes her realize she’s just a bit scared.  She promises to say goodbye to Patrick and his mother before the leave the cruise but when trying to get in contact with him – her phone falls overboard.  Perfect, right? Now how will she ever find Patrick?

A cute story although I find it a bit ridiculous that someone on a Bah Humbug cruise would be rebooked on a 12 days of Christmas cruise.  Although I suppose without that there would be no story so I tried to ignore it and let it slide!

The second book is It Came Upon a Midnight Deer. This book is about Reese – who finds out she was named after a Peanut Butter Cup and follows what she was going through at the same time as Joss’ story was going on in the previous story.

Reese seems to be involved in a series of unfortunate events – it all starts when her and her fiancé Damian hit a deer on the way to his parents vacation home to meet the family.  The car gets stuck so they have to walk (in fancy boots, not practical ones!) to the house.  When they try and retrieve the car, Reese ends up running over Damian’s brothers foot! She ruins Christmas dinner, she sets the house on fire, among other things.  Reese is convinced that the wedding is off and his family hates her, but stuff happens and they are all pretty accepting of her – and enjoy making fun of her mishaps as well!

Then Reese gets home and meets back up with Joss and her new crew for their New Years Eve tradition.

Will they both like Christmas more or less now? I don’t know…

About the Book

A Merry Humbug Christmas features two holiday romance novellas from hilarious and heartwarming author Sandra D. Bricker. — the perfect gift to yourself or someone else at this most wonderfully stressful time of year.

In “Once Upon a Jingle Bell,” A Bah! Humbug cruise to the Mexican Riviera is Joss Snow’s answer to this year’s quest to avoid the holidays completely; at least until she’s rebooked on a different kind of cruise altogether. Candy canes, holly wreaths, reindeer and ornaments seem to be stalking her on the12 Days of Christmas holiday cruise extravaganza. An escape back to land is her only goal . . . until she meets a kindred spirit in rugged Irishman Patrick Brenneman, and then the game is on! Avoid Christmas festivities at all costs . . . except maybe for that one stop under the mistletoe.

In “It Came Upon a Midnight Deer,” Reese’s guilt over abandoning best friend Joss on their holiday tradition of avoiding all things Christmas is trumped by the joy of her recent engagement. Meeting Damian’s family for the first time on idyllic Sugarloaf Mountain is about as far from that Bah! Humbugcruise as she can get, and Reese can hardly wait to get there. But from the moment they hit that deer in the road just two miles from the cabin, everything seems to go wrong. There are no drummers drumming or pipers piping this particular year! And once she sets her future in-laws’ family cabin ablaze, she’s pretty sure there won’t be even ONE golden ring in her future.

Book Review: HEARTACHE MOTEL

heartacheHeartache Motel is 3 stories in 1, all revolving around the seedy heartache motel in Memphis, TN.  Some of the stories are sequel and 1 is a prequel – none of these had I read before.

I think that my favorite of the 3 was the first story – Diners Keepers, Losers Weepers which follows a diner owner, a couple of her waitresses and 2 guys on a trip to Graceland just before the Christmas holidays.  While they had originally made reservations at another hotel their room was given away and they are told about the heartache motel by an Elvis impersonator who is also staying there.  When that impersonator turns up dead, Rose and her friends find themselves wrapped up in a murder mystery – one which she feels she absolutely must solve – but before Christmas so she can get home in time to spend time with her guy and family.

The second is quick sketch which is all about a poker-ring being set up to try and win some money for Byron who had been had by some professional scammers.  This one had a lot of people doing stupid things and it was no surprise that they got caught.

The third book – Dateline Memphis was probably my 2nd favorite.  A reporter decides to go to Memphis with a stop at Graceland to pick up a gift for her mother.  While she is there, Graceland gets put on lock down.  Someone stole one of Elvis’ belts after a little girl supposedly tapped the glass to hard shattering a display.  All while having a dying battery, reporter Nichelle tries to solve the mystery from the inside since the cops are backed up and who knows how long it will take for them to get there.  While reporting from the inside Nichelle gets some notoriety and helps the cops figure out what was going on not only with the belt, but with an Elvis coin scam that was going on too.
