Lana Del Rey at Oakdale Theater

Thursday night, Lana Del Rey came to The Oakdale. My cousin Britt wanted to go because Lana is her favorite person ever, so I told her I would go with her.  We got tickets in the orchestra, last row before the sound booth.  I thought we’d be about 10 rows back from the pit in front, but it turned out we were only 4 rows back and the pit was much larger than I was anticipating.  The plus side to being by the soundboard is that the setlist was laying out just before Lana took the stage so we were able to copy it down. (A lot of times the sound guys will try and hide it – I’m not sure why – but this guy just kind of laughed that we were so interested in it and didn’t care at all.)  She did switch a few songs around from the order that was posted on the setlist though.

I had listened to Lana on Spotify about a week ago just to see what she was all about. She certainly has an interesting voice but it works.  She’s not someone I’d probably have gone seen on my own, but I was glad to have checked her out.  I thought that the set was solid and I liked that she took time in between songs to either go down to the pit (in between the stage and a barricade – of course!) and interact with fans.  I was joking that the show was going to end up being 2x as long as it should have been because she was spending so much time with fans. Don’t get me wrong- this is an awesome thing!

The end of the show was weird.  So here’s my tip on it if you’re going to see her so you don’t make the same mistake we did!

TIP! If you are going to the show and are not in the first couple rows of the pit and want to get a head start on parking lot traffic – at the end of the last song (National Anthem) Lana went off in to the pit (well, there was a barricade) and signed autographs and took selfies with the people up front.  This was about 20 minutes of “uhhh what’s going on?” but we didn’t know if she’d get back on stage and sing more of the song or if she’d do an encore.  She got back up on stage, picked up various items that were handed to her from fans and walked off. And the house lights came on.  Let our mistake be your gain!

After the show we almost got stampeded no less than 3 different times while trying to make it to the car.  2 youtubers were in attendance – Jack and Anthony.  Had no idea who they were (this is how I know I’m old) but they were having girls chase them around all night for photos. I ended up doing a twitter search to figure out who they were (after hearing screams of “ANTHONY! ANTHONY!” constantly).  There were also crazy screams when they made it on the screen on stage near the end of the show.

Action Item @ Club 939

Sunday night, Action Item came to Boston, MA’s Club 939 for an intimate and special performance.  The band is currently on a ‘great mission’ in order to fund their first full length album.  They are soliciting donations through indiegogo to create 3 EPs which when put together will be one full length album they are calling Great Mission. They have recently reached the halfway point of their goal and are currently just under $5,000 away from their entire goal of $25,000 and have just a couple of weeks left to try and get there.

To help promote their mission, they decided to do a few intimate concerts (I believe they are doing 4) to premiere some of the new music that may or may not make the album and talk a bit about their songs in between performing to make things a bit different for their fans.  They did a 10 song set in Boston with 4 of them being new songs. I did record one of the songs but at the request of the band, I will not be posting it.  (Maybe I can after it is released – we will see!) After the show the guys made an effort to try to talk to everyone in attendance to catch up and get their feedback on the songs.  I have to say, I wasn’t sure what to expect from the new stuff but I love it.  They did mention that the versions may not necessarily be the final versions but I think if they continue on the path that these 4 songs are going down that it will be a great first part of the album!

It was a lot of fun to be a part of such an intimate show that will hopefully be the start of something great!  (It helped that the other songs they did in their set were pretty much all of my favorites of theirs!)

Tyler Hilton StageOne Fairfield

Sunday night Tyler Hilton returned to Stage One in Fairfield CT.  He brought with him Russell Howard as the opening act.  Russell kicked off the show at 7:45 and played for roughly half an hour.  He did that cool thing where he played his guitar and then recorded it to loop back so that he could play along with it and make it sound fuller than with just one guy on stage. Always fun to see.  He also mentioned that he went to the beach and ate a sandwich in Fairfield since he lives in land and it was a nice day here.

At 8:35 Tyler hit the stage, I was thankful for an early set because I was exhausted! Tyler did a 12 song set and 2 song encore.  Before he started One Foot in the Bayou he was saying how he was surprised people cheered that they liked the songs and often times it is “one for you one for me” with songs.  He also tried to play the harmonica and then got mad yelled “Fuck it! No harmonica on this song!” and threw it down.  Later he had given it another chance and it seemed to come through for him.  He threatened to leave his harmonica if it didn’t cooperate and then teased how he was blaming the harmonica but he probably should have been blaming himself.  He also threatened to leave his guitar after it made a big POP noise when he plugged it in.

Before Leave Him he talked about how as far as guys go he is probably what would be a “Nice Guy” as opposed to a “Dick Head” when all the girls he was attracted to wanted a “Dick Head”, he said One Tree Hill kind of let him live out that other personality.  The song Leave Him came from when he was hanging out with a guy and a girl that were dating – he was friends with the guy and liked hanging out with him – but knew that he was a shitty boyfriend and just kept kind of hoping that they would break up and then he could date the girl instead – but it didn’t work out that way.

He also talked a lot about what a great vibe the crowd had and how he kind of forgot we were there and felt like it was just a party.  He said he’s not working hard at all and loves what he does and would be doing it even if he had to live in a shitty apartment – but he is lucky enough that he doesn’t have to.  He also talked a bit about his other hobby, acting, and that he is going to be in a new TV show on CBS this summer with Halle Berry (I believe it is called Extant) where he gets to build and play with robots.  He said he doesn’t get religious often but that the song Hey Jesus kind of reminds him of how lucky he is that he gets to do what he does.

Since mentioning “One Tree Hill” always got him such a huge cheer from the crowd, he ended the encore with “When the Stars Go Blue”.

Tyler is currently trying to raise money to record his new album – check out all the details at Pledge Music http://www.pledgemusic.com/projects/tylerhilton

The Wanted – Beacon Theater New York, NY

It’s a different kind of feeling when you KNOW the show you are going to is going to be the last time you are going to see a band. Whether it be “for a while” or “forever”. You wish you had a crystal ball so you’d know if it’s going to be forever or not. (Heck, you wish you had a crystal ball so you’d have known you’d be out of work this week and bought VIP for all the close shows even though they were weeknights!) In 2012 I went to what was SK6ers final show before their hiatus, but that was different.  We knew Stephen would be doing solo shows so you’d be seeing at least him again and you’d be hearing the songs live still.  Not to mention, I don’t think there were any shady rumors about why SK6ers were taking hiatus.  There are all sorts of rumors swirling about why The Wanted are breaking up – they’re being forced, etc.

Friday night was my 10th time seeing The Wanted.  And I somehow managed to score a front row center VIP ticket.  I guess if it’s the end – let’s go out with a bang!  I got to meet the guys before the show.  Jay asked why I was so quiet.  I didn’t know.  Then he also informed me he had lost his phone that morning.  How does he do it!?  The M&G seemed to go by a lot faster than it did on Long Island. Maybe because I was so quiet!

We ended up going to eat after the M&G and I got to my seat just as Midnight Red was taking the stage.  I opted to sit for Midnight Red and Cassio Monroe’s set and wasn’t sure what I’d do for The Wanted because they were telling the girls they couldn’t go right up against the stage.  I ended up sitting on my folded seat for half the show and once security didn’t seem to care girls were leaning against the stage I moved up.  There was a light right in front of me that would come right in my face at times.  The heat those things give off! No wonder why everyone on stage is always sweating like crazy.

The show was perfect.  The guys interact so much with the fans up front throughout the show, talking to them and all that. (Or in my friend’s case – taking their flask and drinking from it!) It didn’t feel like the end. Until the end. When they were walking off stage after “Glad You Came” I teared up a bit.  It’s one thing when you see a band and you don’t know when you’ll see them again – but you know they’ll tour again so it will happen.  It’s a totally different thing when you have no idea if they will end up back together after all of this. Having lived through so many other boybands reuniting but my ultimate favorite NSYNC not (at least not for a tour – though trust me I bawled my eyes out to see them at the VMAs)

I’m not sure what else to say about the show.  I was nostalgic being at the venue where Hanson recorded their first concert VHS.  I was excited because I made it to NYC and the venue on my own and met up with friends there. (I can do anything!) It was just so bittersweet. I hope it’s not the end and I hope that they figure out whatever it is they need to do and come back very, very soon.

The Wanted Word Of Mouth Tour – Huntington, NY

Tuesday night, The Wanted kicked off their US leg of the Word of Mouth tour in Huntington, NY at The Paramount.  Before the show, I got to meet the band because I had purchased a VIP package through their fanclub.  Each package included a lanyard, signed card and a chance to meet the guys and get an individual photo.  The line moved pretty quickly, although it seemed like they gave everyone enough time with the guys.  I gave Jay a present and Siva thought it was just about the greatest thing ever.  I’ll have to see on Friday when I meet them again if he’s put it to good use! (I gave him a Phone Fetcher which I had reviewed here a couple of years ago!)

There were several hours to kill after the VIP had gone through the M&G and before doors were set to open. They let us in early and we were on the barricade in the front row but then thought better of it and went over to the ADA section. With all the pushing coming from a couple of people in the ADA area – we probably would have been better off trying to stay in the front row.  These people were completely oblivious to the concept of “personal space” or that maybe I was sitting for a reason and didn’t need a small child standing right in front of me!

Midnight Red kicked off the show.  I think I liked their set better when they did it at Foxwoods in October.  The set was a bit different and I don’t know, I just wasn’t feeling it.  Maybe because it is so focused on center stage (give or take a random band member coming off to the side) and we were off to the side.  The rest of the crowd seemed to love them though.

Next up was Cassio Monroe who I had never heard of, but they were pretty good. They had one song/rap about trying to get a girl to dump them instead of them dumping her which was pretty funny.

Then it was time for The Wanted! The strobe lights during their set was out of control and I had on sunglasses on and off for most of the show because it was just way too much.  They started the set with Gold Forever which I thought was perfect since this is, unfortunately, a farewell tour.  The whole show was pretty high energy, they did a few songs playing instruments.  They said that they hoped to be back soon. Let’s hope that somehow it works out for them and their “hiatus” isn’t very long.  The setlist was the same as they had been doing for the UK leg of the tour (check it out below) and it consisted of 19 songs which included a medley and no covers!

They had 1 outfit change about halfway through the main set – with Jay coming back out in an outfit that made me feel like he had escaped from a Florida retirement community.  Siva had on what appeared to be some sort of harem sweat pants?  Max’s outfits were probably the best of the night.

As I said, the whole show was high energy and did not disappoint.  I am bummed that my next show tomorrow will be my last 🙁

Demi Lovato Neon Lights Tour

Sunday night Demi Lovato brought her Neon Lights tour to the Oakdale Theatre in Wallingford, CT for the second night in a row. I had a bit of a falling out with Demi, so to speak, so I was moreso going to this tour to see the opening acts – from The XFactor – Fifth Harmony and British Girl Group – Little Mix.  I was also pretty excited to see that Collins Key from this past season of America’s Got Talent would be on the tour as well.

When I got to my seat there was already a DJ on the stage – Cole Plante – who was spinning all the typical songs. (Although I swear he played Katy Perry’s Dark Horse at least 5 times throughout the night).  Around 7, Collins came out and had on a black t-shirt under his jacket and said he had the wrong shirt on, turned around and ended up doing some sort of quick change into a Demi t-shirt.  His catch phrase now seems to be “NO WAAY!” Which I thought was a little bit juvenile (although I guess the crowd was a bit younger than me) and the fact that he kept asking us to say it – rather than amazing us to the point that we wanted to say it on our own got to be a little obnoxious.   He came back out during each of the breaks to do more magic with volunteers from the audience. Most of it was what he had already done on AGT.

Next up was Fifth Harmony – they were good and had a lot of crowd interaction, but I must be old because I thought their outfits were a bit much. Or rather, not much… clothing. At one point, Normani ran off stage. I thought something might have been going on with her top. Based on the tweets after the show – it seemed like I was right and her shirt was falling off so she ran off to get it fixed.

Little Mix was the next act and they were the ones I was most interested in seeing and they did not disappoint. They had 4 dancers with them as well as themselves and had a lot of great energy and even did 1 song entirely a cappella.

Then it was time for Demi! One thing I didn’t like though was how long the wait was after Collins left the stage (at about 845) and Demi taking the stage (close to 930).  If the stage was being set up between acts while Collins was distracting us – why did we have to sit around so much longer? (Although at that point I was pretty over Collins Key so I wouldn’t have wanted to see more of him)

Demi started her set out with Heart Attack. I had been counting songs because I knew that if Nick Jonas was going to come out to sing with her (like he did the 2 nights previous) he’d be coming out around song 6. But then she completely jumped from what I thought was the setlist over about 4 songs.  In addition to Nick not being there, Demi was sick so she cut the setlist down a bit. I was a bit disappointed with the shorter set – but if she was going to lose her voice and sing like crap for those extra songs – it was probably better that she did what she needed to do and cut out some of the songs.

The main set was 12 songs, with a 2 song encore.  For the last song of the main set – Neon Lights – we had been instructed to download her app. It is from Mobile Roadie, who also does the Hanson app. Fortunately my phone had enough space to install it (it’s been picky about those types of things lately!) and I figured I’d see what happens with it and how it is “interactive” during the show. It has what is called “Wham City Lights” and if you point the phone to the stage, it changes color and then when Demi gets to the chorus it gets the flash on the camera to blink along with the song. It was really neat and I’m glad I downloaded to check it out and see how it worked!

The Sing Off Tour – Live at Mohegan Sun Wolf Den

Saturday night The Sing Off Tour made its way to the Wolf’s Den at Mohegan Sun. I wasn’t sure what to expect or how popular it would be – but was glad to have won reserved seats from Kiss 95.7 so I didn’t have to wait in whatever line I might be faced with upon arriving.  And I guess that was a good thing – since upon arriving my usual parking garage was completely FULL.  I had to back track to get in to the other lot where I typically never park (and then make sure to remember I had parked there.)  Turns out I should have paid more attention to the Women’s Basketball Tournament that was going on in the arena – UCONN was playing.

I managed to find a relatively close spot, made my way inside and then got stepped on by some lady and I couldn’t catch my balance and totally fell over.  Fortunately the lady and her friend helped me up but I was worried that was going to set the tone for the whole evening. And it kind of did.  I headed over to Bobby Flay’s – I was dying to have a burger and milkshake before the show – but the line was absolutely ridiculous! So I ended up going to Krispy Kreme which had no line (which is rare, usually that is the place with the ridiculous line!) and tried their new coffee donut. (I’ll post a review on that eventually!)  Then I just took a seat and watched people file in for The Sing Off in the Wolf’s Den.

If you haven’t read my posts before or know what The Wolf’s Den is – it is a very small venue in the middle of the casino that is first come, first serve (unless you somehow manage to win reserved seats) so the line starts early and is often longer than capacity.  I knew that this line was too long – it was the longest I had EVER seen.  When I heard them say seating was full, I snuck up to the front and got in and to my seat.  Everyone else was waiting on the off chance that someone who had a reserved seat didn’t end up showing up.  A lot of the seats inside were reserved – much more than I had ever seen before. But it filled in nicely by the time the show started.

The show started with all 3 groups – The Filharmonic, Voice Play and Home Free coming out in Letterman jackets to sing a fun. medley including Some Nights, We Are Young and Carry On.  I tried to keep track of a setlist as best I could, and I can’t seem to find one online to compare it to so you’ll have to excuse any mistakes and that will be at the end of this post.  (There were several medleys and it was sometimes hard to keep track of all of them!)

Up first was The Filharmonic who did a set of 5 songs – including *NSYNC’s It’s Gonna Be Me.  Most of the songs done were from the show.  I felt like the audience was half dead during The Filharmonic’s set and I was very concerned that this was going to continue on for the whole show – but it seemed like by the time Home Free hit the stage everyone had woken up, or maybe everyone came from Home Free and didn’t care about the other two acts. (I was the opposite and was not a fan of Home Free going in to the night, even though they won.)

Next up was Voice Play – they had Imani from the group Ten performing with them as well – they did a couple songs with Imani and then let her take a break while they took us on a roadtrip.  They all got in to their car and then let the music tell the story of their roadtrip. (I know I didn’t catch all the songs they did during this – but I was a little bit too preoccupied with laughing to keep track of everything.  Then they did another medley which was basically made up of I guess you could say non-words in songs? Na Na Nas and stuff like that – including MMMBop!  They ended their set with one more song joined by Imani – Play That Funky Music.

Then we got to see a battle round between The Filharmonic and Voice Play.  They said “We need a Nick Lachey!” and everyone gasped – I had thought maybe he’d show up since he is in NYC doing his new show – but no such luck!  Tim from Home Free came out to introduce the round and do his best Nick impression – complete with… hair flips?  The two battled it out to *NSYNC’s “Bye Bye Bye”

Then all of the percussionists from each of the groups came out and did a bit of a beat box battle – which was really neat to see.

Then it was time for the winners of the season – Home Free – to take the stage.  They got a bit longer set than the other two acts, of course.  On the show I was not a fan of Home Free at all.  However, they had me laughing so hard throughout their set and put on such a show – they have completely changed my mind.  They did 3 songs before doing a battle round with Voice Play of Destiny’s Child “Survivor” – Voice Play did the song as Zombies and Home Free did the song as Hillbillies.  Then it was time for Home Free’s Guilty Pleasure medley – this was what was hilarious and each guy got to pick their guilty pleasure song (which turned out to be a bad pop song  – which was probably why I liked it so much) and the other guys had to learn it – NO MATTER WHAT.  The songs were: Justin Bieber’s Baby (where Tim teased the choreography should be changed to touching your nose like a sobriety test), Carly Rae Jepsen’s Call Me Maybe, Rebecca Black’s Friday, LMFAO’s Party Rock Anthem and finally, Psy’s Gangnam Style.  (I really wish I could better put in to words how hilarious this part of the show was – but I’m not even going to try you are just going to have to check out the show to see for yourself)

They finished their set and then The Filharmonics came out to do a battle round with Home Free of “I’m All Right” complete with gopher! (If you watched the show – you know what I am talking about!)

The finale of the show was all 3 groups taking the stage once again for Don’t Stop The Music / Wanna Be Starting Something and they had us sing the “Mamma-say mama-sah ma-ma-coo-sah” in 3 part harmony. (And I’m pretty sure I heard someone singing “Imma say it one more time im not gon stop” nearby… and it wasn’t me…)

The show was a lot more fun than I had anticipated and while there were a couple times that I was tempted to turn around and go back home after arriving at the casino, I was very glad that I stuck it out!

Kris Allen at the Fairfield Theater 2/19

Wednesday night, Kris Allen returned to the Fairfield Theater once again (he was previously there in October 2012.)  I had bought VIP tickets so that got me in an hour early and we got a pre show performance from Kris – which he let us pick.  The first song yelled out was “I Need To Know” and he said he wasn’t sure he remembered it but would try. He struggled through it and teased “I don’t remember the words to a song I WROTE!” and said he was really embarassed.  The next song called out was Heartless and he asked if we were sick of that yet and he wasnt sure he knew the words to that one either, but made it through more of the songs.  He promised us that for the show he wouldn’t forget the words because he was practicing those! Then he went around the room to meet everyone, sign our posters and take photos. I told him that I thought his son was the cutest baby ever and he said “well, duh” haha He also said that life since Idol “Was awful” (kidding) and that he is working on the new album and would be playing us some new songs and that it should be out this year but he’s not exactly sure when yet.

At 7:45, Caroline Glaser took the stage. She was a contestant on The Voice but it was Season 4 which I did not watch (with Shakira and Usher) so I was not familiar with her at all. But when she started her set with John Mayer’s “Queen of California” I knew we could be best friends.  I really enjoyed her set, which actually ended up also including a SECOND Mayer cover of “Stop this Train”. She currently has an EP out with 3 songs on it, which I am going to have to pick up!  I also wonder if she knew that John Mayer grew up in Fairfield? (I couldn’t stick around after the show to talk to her, unfortunately)

Around 9pm, Kris took the stage. He started with the song Paul Simon, which I’m not sure if that’s what its officially been named now or not – but this was a new song that he had actually started playing when I saw him last year that had no name.  Then he did Better With You – which was a bit of a different arrangement than I am used to (probably becuse he hasn’t had a full band in a while) but I looooved it.

(This isn’t my video but I loved it so much I had to track one down)
Caroline joined him on stage for Loves Me Not, but when he went to introduce her she wasn’t there to come on stage so he started teasing that a lot of things could be going on backstage and maybe she was in the bathroom. When it seemed to be taking extra long he teased that he was just going to move on without her – but she did finally make her way to the stage! He also teased because she said it was really hot but he wasn’t hot.  They figured it must have been because she had on a sweater and he had on a lighter shirt. (But it did seem to cool down when Kris took the stage! Temperature wise, not performance wise or anything like that!)

He has a new song Dance that he said started as a joke but then he started playing it for people and they liked it so now I guess it is a contender for the new album!  I really enjoyed all of the new songs that he debuted, so I am now looking forward to his 3rd album even more than I already was (if that’s even possible.)

He went in to a little bit of Blurred Lines during my favorite song, Rooftops.  He ended the set with having everyone stand for Live Like We’re Dying and Shut That Door and even danced with a few fans who came to the edge of the stage.

For the encore, he did a song called “End of the Show” that was hilarious.  Here’s another video that’s not mine… but you should check it out because I’m not sure anything I write can do it justice.

I think he ended up playing for about an hour and half. I left the show with a sore throat from singing along and had an absolute great time. It made me a little bit more bummed that I couldn’t see him in Norfolk, but hopefully he will be back around this way soon!

Kris Allen – Infinity Music Hall – Canceled due to Snow

You may have seen on the sidebar that I was planning on going to see Kris Allen at Infinity Music Hall in Norfolk, CT February 13.  But as my luck would have it, a huge snow storm decided to come and I made the decision that I wouldn’t be going unless things looked much, much better than what they were anticipating.  Fortunately, the night before I received this email from the venue – the show would be canceled and all tickets refunded.  I am hoping that perhaps they can work out another date with Kris in the future (Spring or Summer, perhaps?) because I do really like this venue!  I do have tickets to see him in Fairfield on the 19th so I won’t be missing him entirely and I am keeping my fingers crossed that more snow won’t be coming by to mess with my plans again!  (Kris ended up scheduling a last minute show in NYC instead the night of the 13)

Jamaica Trip: Solo Shows

An addition to this years back to the island event was that each member of the band, for the first time EVER, would be performing a solo set.  I wasn’t sure how to count this since I count all my Hanson shows – but I decided to count each one as 1/3 of a show – so all 3 combined would add 1 more show to the count.

First up was Taylor. It was raining a bit during his set so I didn’t get as much video as I would like because I was fearing for my cameras being out in the elements. Fortunately it didn’t rain too hard – but it would have been ok if it did since we were able to just go back to the room and change – unlike every other time I’ve gotten soaked at a concert.

Make It Out Alive
Kiss Me When You Come Home
Weird
When You’re Gone
Be My Own
Every Word I Say
Get Up And Go

The next day was Zac, and there has been some rumors and stuff going on about this show. I think everyone that wasn’t there assumed things happened that didn’t based on hearsay.  I did not think Zac was pissed off, I think he was teasing about trying to get everyone to sing louder and if they didn’t he would leave.  As far as ending his set by dropping the guitar near the amp – I think that was all for dramatic effect, not that he was pissed off.  (He did everything on his setlist so it’s not like he was coming through with his earlier ‘threat’)

This Is The Jam
Letters in the Mailbox
Chasing Down My Dreams
Fire on the Mountain
Broken Angel
Bittersweet
I Am
Get So Low
Devils Nachos

The final night – they saved the best for last (his words.) and Isaac had his turn. I truly do think the solo sets got better as the event went along and Isaac had a great set! He talked a little bit about lyrics and did the longest set out of everyone.  He was also the first to repeat a song when he did Best of Times but I don’t think that anyone minded.

River
Minute Without You
So Lovely
More Than Anything
Call Me
Rain
Someone
Deeper
Too Young To Kill
Best of Times

I ended up getting 1 new never before heard (by me) song from Zac and 2 from Isaac’s set.
