Clay Aiken Palace Theater February 20, 2011

Last night Clay Aiken brought his Tried & True tour to The Palace Theater in Waterbury, CT. I have to say, his concert was a lot of fun. I never realized how funny he was – a couple of times he had me laughing so hard I was near tears.

He started the show off with the theme from Love Story and then went into Mack The Knife.  Then he chatted a bit with the crowd and was incredibly confused with the setlist that he had in front of him.  He also mentioned that he sounded like a man for the first time in his life – and when that brought on cheers he said to watch out because he might have to cut the show short because it depended on him being an alto!

He then went into A Kind of a Hush, What Kind of a Fool Am I, and Breaking Up Is Hard To Do.  He chatted about how a fan in a M&G; had mentioned that he should sing Invisible, but he didn’t think that it would fit into the jazzy feel that he was doing with this tour.  Then he went into a medley of his songs in the jazzy feel and told us to boo if we didn’t like it because it was a new addition to the show for that night. He did about 6 snippits of his songs and they sounded good – with the exception of Invisible which some how came off even more creepy than it already was 😉

He took a couple of breaks and his back up singer Quiana came out to center stage sing – she did A Rainy Day In Londontown and Cry Me A River.

Clay talked a bit about how way back when, artists would have their whole band with them in the studio and they would run through the songs and if they screwed up, they would have to start the song all over.  Now with recording advancements, artists simply have to talk and the producer does all of the work to make it sound good.  He did a bit of Suspicious Minds with autotune and joked about how perhaps that is what he should do to get himself back on the radio.  Then he explained that each night the band chose a song for him to do.  He was not prepped ahead of time but they hand him the lyrics and he reads it.  For last night’s show the song was “I Kissed a Girl” which he said was ironic.

After performing Moon River, he wanted to showcase how talented the band was and said that he would do Who’s Sorry Now in a style that was yelled out from the crowd.  The first suggestion was Irish – although he seemed to have a bit of a Scottish accent when singing it, but the band had no problem making the song sound Irish.  The next suggestion was for Hip Hop which he said he would have Quiana do.  The final suggestion was Grunge… which had Clay screaming “WHO’S SORRY NOWWW” into the mic and Quiana got so into it she started squatting and screaming and Clay thought maybe she was having a bathroom accident.

He ended the set with Unchained Melody and said it is his mother’s favorite song and he used to sing it anywhere as long as someone paid him a quarter.  Then the curtain went down, but the lights never went on – so we knew there would be an encore coming. (Well, everyone didn’t know – some tried leaving)

Clay came out and did Both Sides Now And then talked a bit about how there were a lot of people on their phones letting other people listen in (for a “free concert”) and people taking video and posting it on the internet.  He also mentioned how people at home post on message boards everything that is happening as it is happening and said how when he told the woman in the balcony he would kiss her if she jumped down on to the stage and she said no – she became a celebrity on the message boards and that someone would have responded “I would have jumped off a roof!”  At first this bothered him, but then he realized that people are still coming to his shows so he now embraces the photos and the videos and the phone calls.  He ended the show with “In My Life”

Then, Christine and I, who had a weekend of poor life decisions made another poor decision when we decided to go to the bus because we wanted to meet Adam, Clay’s cute guitarist.  Well, we did meet Adam (and Jerome, Clay’s bodyguard was teaching him how to do handshakes with everyone in line!) and then we decided – what the heck! We’ll wait for Clay.  His show ended around 9:30.  We waited until MIDNIGHT.  And no sign of Clay.  It started to snow and that is when we decided it would really be in our best interest to get home. I don’t know if Clay ever came out and signed or shook hands or anything… I am kind of bummed we waited that long for nothing – as I have not yet met Clay… but I figure we will have another chance and hopefully it will be in much warmer weather!

The Daily Post

Describe the best road trip you’ve ever taken.

I suppose I should touch on the road trip I mentioned during the Rock N Roll meme where I mentioned that my friend Erin and I spent a night in jail.

It all started when Hanson’s tour dates started to come out and they were going to be playing in Canada.  We decided that we would go to the Toronto and Ottawa shows and then whatever show ended up being before and after it.  It turned out that the show before it was in Connecticut, so that worked out really well.  I also won the role of “Hanson.net Reporter” so I got the chance to interview the guys before the show and take pictures from right up front for the first 3 songs of their set.

We had our route all planned out.  The morning after the CT show I would send in all my pictures and report to Hanson.net, and we would take off for Canada.   The first night we spent in Niagara Falls – we got to see the falls at night and walked around a bit before crashing at our motel.  The next morning we woke up and the water in the shower was YELLOW! But we made due and then explored Niagara some more before heading to Toronto.

Our hotel in Toronto was relatively average, although we did not spend much time in it.  We had thought that we would “sleep in” before heading the 5 hours to Ottawa, but Erin won a M&G; with Hanson so we had to get there a bit earlier than we had planned. (And I think I slept about 4 of the 5 hours while Erin drove!)

After the show, we headed to the Ottawa Jail Hostel which, in theory seemed AWESOME. It was an old jail converted into a hostel. (But most of all, it was cheap)  Except Erin somehow ended up getting a tour of the place really, really late at night and I don’t think either of us slept really well at all because we were freaked out haha.  We got the heck out of there REALLY early the next morning and went to Montreal.

From Montreal we went to my uncle’s house in New Hampshire and then to Maine for the last show of our run.  But it always gives people a bit of a surprise when we say “how about that time we spent the night in jail after the Hanson concert?”

The dumbest thing I’ve ever done (aka Hockey Fest ’11)

The Hanson Brothers

I have done a lot of dumb things. Especially if it is to see/meet one of the guys from a band or a TV show that I like.  However, I am pretty sure today was THE dumbest thing I have ever done. Really.

A couple weeks ago it was announced that David Henrie of Wizards of Waverly place would be playing in the Whalers/Bruins Alumni/Celebrity game at Hockey Fest. I LOVE David Henrie.  Actually, I don’t.  I love Justin Russo, which is David’s character on Wizards. If he was real, I would do whatever I could to marry him.  He is smart, good looking and most importantly, a Mets fan!

The Hanson Brothers

My friend Christine and I decided we had to go see him and possibly find him to meet him as well. (Plus, we also love the Whaler’s mascot, Pucky. He is so cute!) We didn’t have any tickets but this afternoon we decided… what the heck, we would try to get relatively cheap seats to make sure we were inside the venue and that way if there was any way to meet David, we would be able to figure it out once inside.

All the players after the game

This all seems normal enough, right?  Well, for any of you who don’t live in the north east – today was probably THE windiest day… ever!  My car said it was 33 degrees outside when I was driving up to Christine’s house – and when I got out of the car the wind practically sent me flying! Not to mention, it made everything a whole lot colder!

We bundled up, got in the car and headed to “The Rent” where the game was being held. Outside.

I recognized this celeb player from Desperate Housewives

And then.. they announced the team. And they said David’s name. But we never saw him? We could not find him on the ice or the bench the entire game. We don’t think he was there.  I have gone through all of my photos and I have found all the other celebrities on the lineup in the game or on the bench or leaving the ice. But NO David.  We were tweeting him a bit (but only a bit – WAY too cold to take our gloves off to tweet!) hoping he would let us know if he was even THERE… but nothing.

The Bruins team during player announcements

After the celebrity/alumni game, there was a CT Whale vs Providence Bruins game. However, once the sun went down the temperature dropped dramatically and we knew we would be frozen solid if we sat out there for another couple of hours. So we left.

Players leaving the ice after the first period

I really don’t know if we are EVER going to thaw out from this afternoon!!

The game ended in a 4-4 tie.  And The Hanson Brothers were there! No, not *my* Hanson.. but *the* Hanson Brothers.  I always remember back in 1997 Hanson used to have to specify that they were not the hockey brothers and whenever I searched for Hanson items on ebay The Hanson Brothers and SlapShot items would show up, so it was kind of funny to get to see them. Although, I am sure I would have enjoyed their antics more if my teeth were not chattering.

But there you have it – what has to be the dumbest thing I have ever done!

Rock N Roll Sundays – Fleetwood Mac

I’ve been a bit preoccupied the last couple of days so I completely forgot to do “Rock N Roll Fridays” meme!  Better late than never, right?  Here it goes…
1. Go Your Own Way “Tell me why Everything turned around
Packing up Shacking up is all you wanna do”
What is the longest vacation you have ever been on?
Usually my vacations are about a week.  I can’t recall any that have been longer than that.

2. Hold Me ”there’s nobody in the future so baby let me hand you my love
oh, there’s no step for you to dance to so slip your hand inside of my glove”
What is the worst exercise machine or routine you’ve ever tried?
Once at physical therapy they had me walking on a treadmill that was off, I was standing backwards and making it move with my feet and I kept telling them that I was going to go flying off it.  They told me there was no way that it would happen.  Wouldn’t you know as soon as they walked away I went flying off of it?  I think whenever I am told “there is no way that will happen” my body takes it as a challenge and it WILL happen lol

3. Gypsy “so i’m back to the velvet underground back to the floor that i love
to a room with some lace and paper flowers back to the gypsy…that i was…to the gypsy…that i was…”
What is your fondest memory of personal freedom?
I guess when I followed Hanson’s tour for a week in 2004.  We went to 4 shows in 5 or 6 days in Connecticut, Toronto, Ottawa and Maine.  Just me and my friend Erin… we even spent one night in jail!

4. You Make Lovin Fun “I never did believe in miracles, But I’ve a feeling it’s time to try.
I never did believe in the ways of magic, But I’m beginning to wonder why.”
Do you believe in magic/witches/alchemists?
Yes and no.

5. Dreams “Now here I go again, I see the crystal visions I keep my visions to myself
It’s only me Who wants to wrap around your dreams and …
Have you any dreams you’d like to sell? Dreams of loneliness … Like a heartbeat … drives you mad …”
Your newest daydream was about what?
I was daydreaming about meeting David Henrie. It didn’t happen… more on that in another post later haha

6. Say You Love Me “have pity baby, just when i thought it was over. now you got me runnin’, runnin’, runnin’ for cover. i’m begging you for a little sympathy
’cause if you use me again it’ll be the end of me”
Anyone violate your trust lately?
Not that I can recall… lucky for them

7. Sara “Sara, you’re the poet in my heart Never change, never stop
And now it’s gone It doesn’t matter what for When you build your house
I’ll come by”
Do you live in a house, apartment or with a relative?
I live in a house

8. Over My Head “you can take me to paradise and then again you can be cold as ice
i’m over my head but it sure feels nice”
How have you been over your head lately?
I don’t think I have been

9. Songbird “And the songbirds keep singing, Like they know the score,
And I love you, I love you, I love you, Like never before, like never before.”
Do you believe people should have caged birds for pets?
I don’t think I’d ever have a pet bird but if that is what people want for a pet who am I to tell them no?

10. Landslide “can the child within my heart rise above?-can i sail thru the changin’ ocean tides? -can i handle the seasons of my life? i don’t know…..”
What season of your life are you sailing through?
I don’t think I’ve ever sailed through anything. (Other than the ocean)

11. Silver Springs “Time cast a spell on you But you won’t forget me
I know I could have loved you But you would not let me”
Any unrequited love story for you?
Nope.

12. Little Lies “No more broken hearts, we’re better off apart. Let’s give it a try, tell me tell me lies…”
Ever told a lie to someone so to not hurt their feelings when they asked for the truth?
If I have, the truth always came out some time later. I am a pretty bad liar!

Danny Gokey, Mohegan Sun Wolf’s Den February 18.

Danny Gokey, of American Idol fame, came to the Wolf’s Den last night to perform a set.  For each show his foundation, www.sophiasheart.org, sells 25-30 meet and greet passes for a donation of $25 to meet him before the show.  I purchased one, and it was a bit confusing on figuring out where to pick it up, but everything worked out. (Everyone told us to pick it up at the arena box office, except that he was not playing the arena.  The wolf’s den has no will-call but there was someone there handing out our passes)

As the Wolf’s Den is general admission, we had to wait in line for a couple of hours to make sure we would get a seat.  We got in line about 5 after picking up the M&G; pass and were let in at about 6:30.  Then at 7:15 we went for the meet and greet which was downstairs underneath “the rock” of the wolf’s den stage.  The hallway down there was covered in signatures and drawings by bands who had played the venue in the past.

The meet and greet was pretty quick – a nice to meet you, a hug from Danny, an autograph (He seemed confused as to why I was having him sign an envelope.  It was the envelope my pass had come in – I had intended to buy a CD for him to sign but they were not selling merch before the show!) and a photo with him, taken by his tour manager.  Then we went back upstairs to our seat.

The show started promptly at 8 and Danny did a mix off songs off of his album, as well as some covers.  He played until about 9:30, which was interesting because usually the shows in the Wolf’s Den are only an hour.  He did a LOT of talking in between songs about Sophia’s Heart and what they are accomplishing as a foundation. It seems like they are doing a lot of great things!  If he wasn’t talking about the foundation in between songs, he was talking about Sophia.

Before “I Still Believe” he said “How many of you… like me…” which got everyone screaming “WE LOVE YOU DANNY!” and he was like “No, no. I mean, I wanted to use myself as an example” Which was pretty funny – whether it was scripted or not.

After the show, he hung around to sign, although I did not bother since I had already gotten his signature at the M&G; (and had gotten it once before when I met him before an Idol show)

The Daily Post

A double dose of the Daily Post since I didn’t get a chance to post yesterday’s question.

What would you do with a million dollars, tax free?
I think this one is easy.
a) put it towards research for my time machine / teleporter
b) travel the country/world to see a bunch of concerts

When you’re feeling down, what music cheers you up?
Generally anything pop. John Mayer, Hanson, Boybands, stuff like that!
