Let’s start first with how I used to HATE P!NK.  When she first came out – with her pink hair, my hair was dyed pink too so I hated her. (Hey, in high school that is a perfectly good reason to hate someone)  Then I saw her open up for NSYNC (twice) and decided that she was a bad ass.  On her mizzundastood tour, I got 2nd row tickets in a radio presale which I believe at that time was the closest I had ever been at a show.  But cameras weren’t allowed so I had to check mine at the venue.

Anyway… now I love pink though I haven’t been keeping up with her albums too much lately- just the radio singles.  But I figured I’d get back in to it with her latest release – The Truth About Love.  (The fact that she’d finally be coming back to CT on tour may have had a bit to do with it)

Before I had the album, I had heard that it was “a lot of filler” and the first few times listening to it I had this in the back of my mind and I think it made me a bit biased because the first couple times through I was like.. you know this album isn’t all this great it is a lot of filler.

But then I got out my headphones and listened to it straight through (previously I had been listening in the car).  With headphones on I got to pay more attention to everything.  While there are a lot more slower songs than I would like, I wouldn’t really call them “filler”, they are all beautiful in their own way.

Another of the complaints that I had seen before listening to the album was that she swears for no reason.  I do have the explicit version and I do dislike when bands swear and use the F-word just to sound “cooler”, but I don’t get that vibe from her songs.  I think that the words serve their purpose in each of the songs that they appear in without it making it seem like she is trying too hard.

As far as the songs featuring other artists – I’d love Just Give Me A Reason a lot more if it didn’t have Nate from fun. on it.  But as far as Eminem’s song, I think it is perfect with his additions to it.

A lot of the songs I am hoping get added to her set list for her tour – because I can’t wait to see what she decides to do with them with a large scale stage show (have you seen her stage yet? it looks freaking AWESOME!)

The Death of a Concert Ticket

I got emailed a link to this info graphic of “The Death of the Concert Ticket” and I found it to be quite interesting.  It seems like the ticket monopoly Ticketmaster is trying to lean towards phasing out paper tickets and lean towards ticketfast tickets.  As I’ve probably mentioned on here before – I hate these tickets.  They are way too big to comfortably fit in your purse, and even after you cut them down they are way too big to comfortably fit on your scrapbook pages!  But recently I saw that it was $5 to MAIL the concert ticket – ticketfast was free.  I opted for willcall… but I’m thinking that next they’ll be charging for that too.  Then I’ll have to decide just how much the tickets are worth to me.  Right now, not $5.  Later on down the road?  Maybe.

I have been to one “paperless” show this summer.  You can check out my details about that in my Jason Mraz review. Just type Jason Mraz in the search bar under Zac Hanson on the title bar! (Did you even know that the search function was hiding there?)

And here is the info graphic for those intereseted

The Voice – Battle Rounds Week 2

Week two of the battle rounds have come to an end.  It looks like there will be just one more week of battles before we move on to the next round.  Although with the steals, I’m not entirely clear on what that will be.   They dragged some battles out again (I feel like Team Blake gets more airtime than any other team) and then gave us some really quick battles again.  You’d think I would have been more prepared since they sprung it on me last week too – but nope, missed out on picking a winner again.   (And a note… next weeks post may not come on Saturday, I’ll be on vacation but will catch up with the show and post ASAP when I return!)

Jon McLaughlin at Stage One

Wednesday night Jon McLaughlin returned to Stage One for his second show there.  Opening for him was Xenia from Season 1 of The Voice.  Xenia did a set of 8 songs – a couple of covers – Home by Phillip Phillips and Animal by Neon Trees as well as the songs from her recently released EP (check it out on iTunes for $3.96!).  She mentions how that while she was on The Voice she told her coach, Blake Shelton, that she was a huge fan of Jon’s and it was him who made her want to do music for a living.  Jon ended up coming to LA to meet her and next thing you know she is singing on his CD and now opening for him on tour!  Xenia has a reall amazing voice and I just love her! She also talked a bit about a charity – Love 146, she visited them in New Haven earlier in the day and they are trying to prevent sex trafficing of children in third world countries and in the US as well.

Then it was time for Jon.  He is completely solo this tour – just him and his piano.  The setlist was a bit similar to his last visit, but he had said that last time he didn’t know how to play the songs and now he did since the album had been released so it would be a better show.  Before he did Summer is Over he talked about how it is a duet with Sara B, but that she wasn’t there and wouldn’t be coming out so don’t expect her to and that he would be singing all her parts. He was so funyjn in between songs, but I unfortunately didn’t buy the recording of the show (dumb!) so I can’t remember exactly what all he had said. (Jon if you’re out there and I can buy the recording after the fact let me know! Kicking myself now for not having done it!)

He talked a bit about how they did the new record out in Indiana with his whole band, also from Indiana and how he stayed up really late working on the mixes from the tracks that they recorded that day.  He didn’t know how it worked here in CT (since we’re near a city that never sleeps) but in Indiana after 10pm no one bothers you, so he was startled to recieve a text at 3am.  The text was from a number he didn’t recognize and it said that it was Blake Shelton and he was a coach on The Voice and wasn’t sure if that was ringing any bells.  Of course what jon responded was hilarious but I can’t remember exactly now except that it ended with a smiley face. Anyway – they went back and forth via text and that is how he ended up going out to LA to meet Xenia.  She sings on Maybe It’s Over – the song Jon was working on the night Blake first texted him.  He had her come out to sing it with him.

For the encore he said he was completely off the set list and would take requests.  Two or three songs got yelled out and he said he’d play the first one he heard because she sounded hostile – he did Human.  The second song he did was Beautiful Disaster.

Afterwards he said he’d hang out – but I ended up skipping out right after (which is why I missed out on the dang recording of the show. stupid, stupid, stupid)

Anyway – Jon is an amazing talent and if you get the chance to see him you should definitely take it! He mentioned he’d hope he’d get to come back to the Stage One a third time and I certainly hopes that he does!!

Xenia:

Ticketmaster Goes Pink!

For the month of October, Ticketmaster was sending out PINK tickets! At first I wasn’t sure if it was just for tickets purchased in October for other October events – but then I got a pink ticket to see Honor Society in November and – best of all – the ticket I ordered to see P!NK in 2013 is also pink! How perfect is that?

Here’s the press release about it:

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 2, 2012 /PRNewswire/ – In support of the NFL’s “A Crucial Catch” breast cancer awareness campaign, Ticketmaster, a Live Nation Entertainment company (NYSE: LYV), announced today that all Ticketmaster tickets for the month of October will be pink to help raise awareness for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Additionally, a portion of every NFL ticket sold on Ticketmaster and on NFL Ticket Exchange, the official ticket resale marketplace of the NFL, in October will go toward the American Cancer Society’s fight against breast cancer.

(Photo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20121002/LA85397)

“Breast cancer affects so many of our families, which is why we are proud to team up with the NFL to support the American Cancer Society and raise funds for breast cancer research, treatment and education,” said Nathan Hubbard , CEO of Ticketmaster. “This is the first time in Ticketmaster’s more than 35-year history we are changing the color of the Ticketmaster ticket and we hope the millions of pink Ticketmaster tickets will help raise breast cancer awareness. With a portion of NFL tickets sold during October going directly to support breast cancer programs at the American Cancer Society, every fan of live entertainment will be doing their part to help beat breast cancer.”

In addition to the donations made through a portion of tickets sales in October, Ticketmaster will also be raising funds through the auction of official pink NFL merchandise signed by Hall of Fame Quarterback Troy Aikman , who is serving as the spokesman for NFL Ticket Exchange powered by Ticketmaster. As part of the NFL’s “A Crucial Catch” breast cancer awareness campaign, Mr. Aikman has autographed special commemorative NFL merchandise that will be auctioned for charity on NFL Auction (www.nfl.com/auction).

“The American Cancer Society continues fighting for every birthday threatened by breast cancer in every community,” said Roshini George , National Vice President of Health Promotions for the American Cancer Society. “Through the generous support of Ticketmaster and the NFL, we look forward to continuing to make important strides in the fight against breast cancer.”

Book Review: Hidden Mickey 5

Chasing New Frontiers is the 5th book in the Hidden Mickey series.  I have no read any of the other books in the series, so at first I was not sure how this would affect my reading and enjoying of this book.  It is a fictional story based loosely on a true story that tries to incorporate the magic of Disney as well.  It seemed like a stand alone story, or if it related to the others I didn’t get that vibe from it.

It did take me a little while to actually get into it though.  There were several chapters going back and forth between the 60s and modern day (2010) and it took me a bit to get to figuring out who was in which time period (it says at the beginning of each chapter too, but it was still confusing me for some reason.) About halfway through the mystery of the story really started coming together and I got in to it.

“Missy” (actually pop star Malaysia) meets Blain, a guy who works at Disneyland.  While they are out they find a really old wallet. In the wallet is some money and a cryptic note and a key.  Somehow they follow the note to various locations around the park and near by to try and find out more information.

Meanwhile, they find out that back in the 60s a lot of money went missing from the park and it hasn’t been found in 40 plus years.  They think that this might be what the key will lead them to.

There are some other twists and turns along the way too – but I don’t want to give it away.  All in all in was a great mystery and while some of it was predictable there were a few twists in there I was certainly not expecting at all! I definitely recommend this for Disney enthusiasts and especially those who love a good mystery book.

Now I have to go track down the rest of the books…

I received a free e-copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley in order to write this review.

About the Book

Hidden Mickey 5: Chasing New Frontiers follows Disneyland cast member, Blain Walters, as he and a beautiful Swiss visitor to Disneyland, Missy Johansen, stumble upon a decades-old, lost wallet. The wallet holds the key to a forty-four-year-old mystery of lost, stolen money and Walt Disney’s legendary and mysterious red-diamond pendant. While Blain and Missy follow a trail of lost clues, they also find themselves wanting to follow their hearts as they find a real connection with each other. Adding to the intrigue, Blain is unaware that Missy is in reality—and incognito—the rising international pop star from Switzerland, Malaysia Hosiner. Where do the cryptic clues lead the young couple? How long can Malaysia keep her true identity a secret? And, who else seeks the long-lost Disney fortune?

Book Review: How Music Works

A couple weeks ago my parents went to a concert. David Byrne they told me.  Never heard of him, I said back.  And now here I am having read his book!

The book is a little bit autobiography and a little bit history and technology, though I wouldn’t say it goes in to really HOW music works like the book I read a while back does. (Book Review: How Music Works by John Powell) and it is interesting to hear about it all from the perspective of a musician.

I found interesting where he talked about how the length of a song was influenced greatly by the length of time that would fit on one side of a 45, which also changed the style of writing.  Now, music is digital and can be as long or as short as you’d like but it seems like the 3 minute song to 3.5 minutes is still the norm.

His thoughts on royalties were also interesting – I am always curious to know how much an artist gets depending on how you buy their music – digitally or on CD, etc.

Definitely an interesting read for anyone looking to make it in the industry, interested in how it works or just looking for a good book to read!

I received a free e-copy of the book from the publisher in order to write this review. I was not otherwise compensated.

About the Book

How Music Works is David Byrne’s remarkable celebration of a subject he has spent a lifetime thinking about. In it he explores how profoundly music is shaped by its time and place, and he explains how the advent of recording technology in the twentieth century forever changed our relationship to playing, performing, and listening to music.

Acting as historian and anthropologist, raconteur and social scientist, he searches for patterns – and shows how those patterns have affected his own work over the years with Talking Heads and his many collaborators, from Brian Eno to Caetano Veloso. Byrne sees music as part of a larger, almost Darwinian pattern of adaptations and responses to its cultural and physical context. His range is panoptic, taking us from Wagnerian opera houses to African villages, from his earliest high school reel-to-reel recordings to his latest work in a home music studio (and all the big studios in between).

Touching on the joy, the physics and the business of making music, How Music Works is an irresistible adventure and an impassioned argument for music’s liberating, life-affirming power.

Book Review: The Girl Who Was On Fire

The Girl Who Was On Fire is a series of essays written by other young adult authors dissecting the Hunger Games trilogy.  This is a re-release called the “movie edition” which included several additional essays about the movie in addition to the stories about the book.

The essays do mention events from all 3 of the books so it is best if you have read all 3 books and seen the first movie before reading the essays, unless you don’t mind having some events spoiled.  That said, I will try to avoid spoilers in the rest of my review, but you might not want to continue reading if you don’t want to be spoiled.

The essays talk about the love triangle and Peeta vs Gale (and why current YA novels that are popular all seem to involve a love triangle), relating the Hung Games which is supposed to be  this big science fiction fake thing, but when you compare it to current reality TV games – like Big Brother – it doesn’t seem so sci fi and off the wall after all.

While a lot of the essays do focus on the reality tv aspect – a couple focus on the technology.  There are Tracker Jackers in the game, genetically engineered bugs, like wasps that can kill with their sting.  Is there a possibility that this is in our future – in real life? We’ve cloned a sheep after all.  Is using this technology for bad just around the corner?

And one essay talks about if the 3rd book sucked.  It was by far my least favorite book so it was interesting to see why the author thought this was.

This book will definitely make you think and would be a great companion for any one who has read the book but wants to think about it more – especially for teachers looking for lessons around the book in their classes.

About the Book

Katniss Everdeen’s adventures may have come to an end, but her story continues to blaze in the hearts of millions worldwide.

In The Girl Who Was on Fire – Movie Edition, sixteen YA authors take you back to Panem with moving, dark, and funny pieces on Katniss, the Games, Gale and Peeta, reality TV, survival, and more.

  • How does the way the Games affect the brain explain Haymitch’s drinking, Annie’s distraction, and Wiress’ speech problems?
  • What does the rebellion have in common with the War on Terror?
  • Why isn’t the answer to “Peeta or Gale?” as interesting as the question itself?
  • What should Panem have learned from the fates of other hedonistic societies throughout history—and what can we?

The Girl Who Was On Fire covers all three books in the Hunger Games trilogy.

Book Review: Seventeen’s Terrifying True Teen Stories

I used to always love to read the stories in Seventeen magazine that were true stories from teens.  Now I guess I am a bit too old to be reading Seventeen magazine so it has been quite some time since I read any.  When I saw that they were coming out with a book with Terrifying True Teen Stories I figured I’d relive my youth and check it out.

There are many stories in the book – about a girl who lost her finger in a firecracker accident, a girl who was home while her house was being robbed – and when her boyfriend showed up the robber his in her closet – in the room where SHE was hiding as well!   A girl who needed brain surgery in order to relieve headaches she was getting.  A girl whose life was changed by multiple cheerleading accidents.  But it was the final story that seemed to affect me the most – a girl who got a tattoo because her friend encouraged her to.  They didn’t know if the tattoo artist was licensed and it was basically done in a backyard and she got an infection.  The details of this story were DISGUSTING and almost made me sick.  And it definitely is making me reconsider wanting to get a tattoo (although I know to go to a reputable parlor and there are also links to sites you can use to look up legit places to go.)

A great book if you have teens to let them know of dangers that are out there by having them read real stories of situations that happened to real teens.

About the Book

What would you do if your house were robbed—while you were in it? What would you do if you were kidnapped? Or if you needed brain surgery? In Seventeen’s Terrifying True Teen Stories, eleven teen girls share how they bravely handled life’s most tragic and frightening challenges. The details are crazy, but their stories are amazing!

Music Monday: Honor Society Serendipity

Obsession
Serendipity
This Bed Is An Ocean
House on the Hill
Kaleidoscope

After a successful Kickstarter campaign, Honor Society was able to release their latest EP “Serendipity” on September 18th.  The EP includes 5 tracks – Obsession was one of the free tracks that they released a while back, but it has been reworked a bit for the EP.  Serendipity is their latest single, the song and the tune is really, really catchy – but I’m not really a fan of all the pop culture references and name drops.  But that doesn’t mean you won’t hear me humming or singing it for days after hearing it.  This Bed is an Ocean was the first Honor Society song I ever heard live.  We’ve been waiting since 2008 for it to show up recorded – and after a teaser of it on A Tale of Risky Business Part 2 – they had to record it in its entirety for this album!  It sounds absolutely amazing – way better than I could ever have imagine and I have to say it was most definitely worth the wait.  House on the Hill and Kaleidoscope are the previously not heard tracks on the EP and they do not disappoint.   House on the Hill is simply an amazing track.

The EP is available on iTunes and Amazon with limited hard copy CDs available at the bands merch site – http://www.honorsocietymerch.com or you can get one in person with your paid concert ticket to their NYC EP release party that will be going down November 13th at the Bowery Ballroom! I’ll be there – and you should be too!
