Book Review: 10 Christians Everyone Should Know

I have read several of the “Christian Encounters” series books published by Thomas Nelson by various authors.  But when I read those books I tend to choose the biographies on people I am already somewhat familiar with. I am a devout Christian and someone who you can see wearing Christian bracelets and neck pieces. With the book 10 Christians Everyone Should Know, I was able to get a little bit about several christians, some of which I have already read the Christian Encounters book on and others that I didn’t know much about at all.

The book is just shy of 300 pages (with the last 50 of so being Notes that are marked throughout the chapters), devoting a decent chunk of text to each of the 10 people in the book.  While the biographies are not as thorough as reading the book devoted to each individual, it really gives you an idea of who they are, what they stand for as well as their Christian beliefs.  At the end of each short biography, information on the author and full Christian Encounter Series book is mentioned.  There are a few that I hope will pop up on BookSneeze because they have gotten me interested!

This is a great book if you don’t have the time to devote to each individual Christian Encounter Series book, but are still interested in finding out more about the 10 Christians Everyone Should Know.

The 10 Christians Are:

1. Sant Patrick
2. Galileo
3. Anne Bradstreet
4. John Bunyan
5. Johann Sebastian Bach
6. Jane Austen
7. D.L. Moody
8. George Washington Carver
9. Sergeant York
10. William F. Buckley Jr

Book Description

Jane Austen, Sergeant York, Saint Patrick—What did they have in common?

Two thousand years and still going strong: that’s the story of Christianity. And while the Christian martyrs and saints and orators may have gotten more press, the fact is the faith has been carried through history in the hearts and deeds of believers who—though beloved to us now—were simply living ordinary lives of devotion.

“It would be almost impossible to imagine ten people more different from each other than these,” editor John Perry says. “This [is] the first truth of Christian living: anybody, anywhere can be a champion of the faith, an example and inspiration to all who follow.”

There’s no dry biography here, though. Each story teems with fresh insight. D. L. Moody did some of his most powerful evangelizing by befriending ragged street children in Chicago. William F. Buckley never delivered a sermon, yet a Christian worldview informed his erudite, witty, output in print and broadcasting. To compose her poems, Anne Bradstreet had to understand science, history, the Bible, and literature, not to mention the political scene in both Massachusetts and England. You’ll look with new eyes, also, on the lives of George Washington Carver, Jane Austen, Galileo, Johann Sebastian Bach, Sergeant York, John Bunyan, and Saint Patrick. You might think you know their stories . . . but you don’t. Not yet.

For lovers of biography, for homeschool or study groups, for anyone seeking encouragement in the Christian walk, 10 Christians Everyone Should Know is a valuable resource.

The Voice – Battle Rounds 1

Finally, finally! The battle rounds! They are introducing “The Steal”, which will allow another coach to steal the losing battle round member for their team.  Each coach is allowed to steal 2 contestants.  This should hopefully make things more exciting!  How it works is, once the coach picks who they want to keep, Carson has the other contestant talk to his judge.  During this time, any of the other 3 judges can hit their red button.  The contestant then gets to choose from those who hit their buttons, or get placed on the team if only 1 judge tries to steal.  I’m not exactly sure what happens with those 2 stolen contestants later on down the line. I don’t know if I missed them explaining it or they haven’t said anything yet.

I was also going to complain that they completely DRAG out these battle rounds.  They fit in almost 4 in the first hour – but only 2 more in the second? They should be doing at least 8 in a 2 hour episode!  But then in the second episode, they buzzed through 2 battle rounds so quickly I couldn’t pick who I wanted to win for one before it was announced, and I barely had enough time to pick a winner for the second.  What the heck NBC? Can’t we have a happy medium?  Full battle songs but less rehearsal BS? (Although I guess they throw that in there so we can see how much they grow and get to know them a bit better…)

My plan for the season is to have Saturday re-caps.  But I also intend to blog XFactor (once we get FOX back.. if we ever get FOX back.. ugh!) so there might be a shake up with the actual day / time of the posts. But I do intend to have one weekly whenever possible!

Jonas Brothers Radio City Music Hall

Thursday night the Jonas Brothers made their return to the stage at a sold out show at Radio City Music Hall in New York, NY.  Trying to get tickets was a struggle, my friend and I were forced to get singles with me about 7 rows back and her about 10 rows back.  You can’t really complain with the seats – though it would have been nice if we were together.  What was really crazy though, was that my friend Megan somehow had the seat next to me! We couldn’t get over it for the whole show that we were together and had no idea before hand.

The show was set to start at 8, but you know how that goes.  There was no opening act, and the guys made it to the stage at about 8:30.  The entrance was kind of dramatic, they had the curtain down and then there was a screen when it went up with the guys silhouettes on it.  They kicked off the set with When You Look Me In The Eyes, which I thought was an interesting way to start the show. But it ended up being rather emotional, so maybe they knew what they were doing after all.  The set overall seemed to be a bit of a roller coaster with slow and fast all mixed in together and not a chunk of the show devoted to ballads.  I’m not sure really how I felt about that – but it probably was on purpose as well.

The show will actually be replaying today online at VyRT from 12pm – 12am, but I think that you had to buy a “ticket” before the show originally was performed in order to be able to watch it.  I will be checking it out later, but this review is all from memory…

My least favorite moment of the show was when Joe ended up almost right in front of us during “That’s Just The Way We Roll” and changed “Battle dance against Hanson” to “Battle Dance Against One Direction”! How rude! haha

For Turn Right they had the band sing most of the song to kind of give them the spotlight (although there really wasn’t a spotlight, the lighting kind of stunk) and let them be up front for once which was cool.

They did 3 new songs – Let’s Go, First Time and Wedding Bells.  It is assumed that Wedding Bells is about Miley.  I came to this conclusion myself during the song – but I can’t tell you exactly what it was that triggered it.  I wasn’t the only one though as many news outlets today were reporting the same thing!

They did several covers – I don’t think We Found Love was able to be shown on the stream.  During the performance the side screens actually had text on them saying they were not allowed to be shown because they didn’t have the rights (so I assume that the side screens were the feeds that those watching online were getting)

After they did Falling Slowly from Once, they did a remixed version of Pushing Me Away in a kind of Once type arrangement (this probably makes no sense to anyone that wasn’t there)  There was even what could be considered “dancing” but was more like choreographed stomping.

They also remixed Hold On – and I am pretty sure Joe forgot the lyrics.  Of course, they stopped singing a lot for the fans to sing along – but this was the only time that it seemed like it was not being done on purpose.

Another weird part of the night was when a dancer appeared on stage while Nick was singing A Little Bit Longer.  At first I was a bit confused because I didn’t know if she was someone who snuck on stage or what.  Then she started dancing so I figured she was part of the show.  She also had on dark lacy pants and when her dress went up the girls around me all screamed out “Oh my GOD!” in disgust!

Setlist under the cut!

A Rocket To The Moon

The other day I got the chance to hang out with A Rocket to the Moon at the Dunkin Donuts Music Lounge.  I was one of the first contest winners there, so Nick and Justin were just playing around and when I walked in, Nick was singing “What Makes You Beautiful” and they also played around playing “God Bless The Broken Road”.

A bit later more fans showed up and it was time for the live chat / performance.  The guys did 3 songs – First Kiss, You’re My Song and Whole Lotta You.  During the chat they talked a bit about how they got “robbed” at the hotel and the guy slowly took off with their $20 and it was the slowest robbery ever, Nick talked a bit about Demi Lovato, Taylor Swift and Debby Ryan (He is friends w/ Demi – went to her show with his girlfriend and her sister and they went backstage, he’d love to open for Taylor and he did a cover of Taylor’s song with Debby recently but haven’t heard from Taylor that she’s seen it)  Among the fans were a band so they talked about band names, it doesn’t seem like Nick likes the name “A Rocket To The Moon” and said to pick something awesome right from the beginning so if you make it and become stuck with it you like it.  He talked about how to steal from stores when you work there (but didn’t recommend doing it) and he also said that he started the band / doing music because after he graduated HS he didn’t want to go to school anymore (but didn’t condone doing that either)

After the chat was over we got pics with the guy and a signed poster. I wouldn’t have really said I was a fan before the chat (I did see them open up for Hanson in 2010) but I loved the 3 songs that they did in the chat and will have to check out their new EP that just came out!  Unfortunately they’re not hitting CT on their upcoming tour but hopefully I’ll get the chance to check them out again soon!

Product Review: Glade Expressions Collection

As a bzzagent, I often get to try out some new products and let you all know what I think of them!  The latest products that I have gotten to try come from the Glade Expressions(R) Collection.

I received a coupon to pick up an oil diffuser starter and a fragrance mist starter kit.

For the Oil Diffuser, I picked Lavender and Juniper Berry.  The starter kit comes with 1 oil bottle, 1 diffuser card and 1 Decorative holder.  We’ve been using the oil diffusers with oil and sticks at the house lately, and I am always too afraid to put one of those in my room in fear of it getting knocked over.  With the Glade Expressions diffuser, you click the diffuser card into the oil bottle and is a lot harder to spill. (I am not going to say spill proof because I don’t want to jinx myself – but I do feel a lot more comfortable with it in my room and not worried about it being knocked over)  Currently the diffuser is residing on my night stand and it started working in roughly 20 minutes after I placed it there.  The smell is so good!

For the fragrance mist, I chose Cotton & Italian Mandarin as the scent.  This product had no assembly required, you just squeeze it to spray the room you are in.  This scent was really strong at first, but as I got used to it, it became much more subtle.  I have this on my dresser right now, but probably won’t be using it while the lavender diffuser is in here.  The instructions for refilling seem pretty simple, but I haven’t tried it yet.  All you have to do is unscrew the base, tap it on your palm to remove the refill, remove the fill cap and slide the new refill holder in and replace the base.  This allows you to only buy 1 starter kit and then you can switch out whatever scents you would like as a refill!

The aluminum refill is recyclable and 100% natural propellant. Neither product is formulated with phthalates.

I received coupons to purchase these products for free in order to write this review. All thoughts and opinions are my own and I was not otherwise compensated.

Craft Corner: Beach Ball

Every now and then inspiration hits while I am at a concert for what I will do with that scrapbook layout.  For some reason, when I got back from Bamboozle I knew that I had to make the layout a beach ball.

The pictures were kept aside for quite some time while I figured out how to make a beachball.  I got out my Martha Stewart circle cutter and was oh so careful adjusting it so that I wouldn’t slice my finger open like I had done the last time I used it.  No such luck, cut my finger open again.  (The blades are WAY to sharp and it is not easy to change the size of the circle or remove the blade before adjusting. Really poor design.)

Then I cut 5 circles (after I put on a bandaid – of course!) and had my brother free hand on one of them 5 parts because I couldn’t figure out how to do it, and I used that as a template to cut each of the pieces from each color.  The circle in the middle was cut from a circle punch – much less dangerous – but it is not quite the size I wanted for proportion. But, I didn’t cut another finger in the process so that was a plus.

You’ll have to wait a couple days to see the finished product (I hope to have a 2nd 2012 scrapbook post up then!) although technically it is still not quite finished because the “ticket” was a cloth wristband and I still haven’t been able to remove the plastic connector to make it flat enough to attach and fit in a book. Someday!

This was a fun project but I wouldn’t recommend using the Martha Stewart cutter unless you have adult supervision ;)  (One of these days I’ll figure out how to use it properly – I was so excited when I saw it on Oprah I ran out and got it the next day – but have only used it a couple of times because I keep slicing fingers!)

Book Review: Psychos

Psychos: Serial Killers, Depraved Madmen, and the Criminally Insane contains stories by Neil Gaiman, Lawrence Block, Ray Bradbury, Robert Bloch, Thomas Harris and more and is edited with commentary by New York Times Best Selling author John Skipp.

To be honest, I’m not sure why I chose to read this book. I have an incredibly over active imagination and it does not take much to freak me out.  Reading 600 pages about psycho killers is probably a sure fire way to having nightmares for the rest of my life, but I chose to read it anyway.

The book contains 38 stories – each with a photo that if you are a scaredy cat like me will make you jump out of your skin – even though they aren’t all that scary. (Sometimes I get scared by my own shadow, so you know, it doesn’t take much).  Ultimately I didn’t end up finishing this book because I valued my sanity a bit too much and I was freaking myself out over basically nothing.  I did pick and choose a few of the stories to read though, that I thought wouldn’t be too much for me to handle.

However, if you can handle reading about psychos without completely freaking yourself out (or maybe you LIKE freaking yourself out, I’m not one to judge) then this would be the book for you.  It is 600 pages of stories  about all sorts of crazy guys and the crazy things that they do. The book is a bit of a “greatest hits” and doesn’t claim to have every story out there cataloged, but I’d say 38 is a decent start.  If you check out the book – good luck – and let me know if there are any specific stories you think I should have actually finished…

I received a free e-copy of this book in order to write this review. I was not otherwise compensated.

About the Book

“A staggering thirty-eight-course banquet of literary mania and mayhem, served up by some of the most amazingly astute, deeply disturbing, immensely entertaining chronicles of crazy ever to grace the printed page.” – John Skipp, Introduction.

Stories of serial killers and psychos loom large and menacing in our collective psyche. Tales of their grisly conquests have kept us cowering under the covers but still turning the pages.

Psychos is the first book to collect in a single volume the scariest and most well-crafted fictional works about these deranged killers. Some of the stories are classics, the best that the genre has to offer, by renowned writers such as Neil Gaiman, Edgar Allen Poe, Robert Block, and Thomas Harris. Other selections are from the latest and most promising crop of new authors.

John Skipp, who is also the editor of Zombies, Demons, and Werewolves and Shapeshifters, provides fascinating insight, through two nonfiction essays, into our insatiable obsession with serial killers and how these madmen are portrayed in popular culture. Resources at the end of the book include lists of the genre’s best long-form fiction, movies, websites, and writers.

Selections from Neil Gaiman, Thomas Harris, Ray Bradbury, Lawrence Block, Bentley Little, Edgar Allen Poe, Simon McCaffery, Mehitobel Wilson, and more.

Book Review: Albert Einstein and Relativity for Kids

I am all for teaching kids more about science. And this book certainly does just that.  In addition to being a biography on the life and times of Albert Einstein, it also includes little experiments that kids can do that help illustrate some of Einstein’s theories.  There are also short write ups on other great scientists as well.

It is part biography, part text book and part hands on activities. I think that the hands on part is the most important – I could always read all I wanted on different theories but actually seeing it in person in a relevant example was what I needed for things to make sense.

I really like how this book is written and I wish that something like this was around to help me out back when I was in school!  This is a great book if you are looking to supplement your child’s learning of science or even if you are an adult and feel like your knowledge on science is sub-par.

I received a free e-copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley in order to write this review.

About the Book

Best known for his general theory of relativity and the famous equation linking mass and energy, E = mc², Albert Einstein had a lasting impact on the world of science, the extent of which is illuminated-along with his fascinating life and unique personality-in this lively history. In addition to learning all about Einstein’s important contributions to science, from proving the existence and size of atoms and launching the field of quantum mechanics to creating models of the universe that led to the discovery of black holes and the big bang theory, young physicists will participate in activities and thought experiments to bring his theories and ideas to life. Such activities include using dominoes to model a nuclear chain reaction, replicating the expanding universe in a microwave oven, creating blue skies and red sunsets in a soda bottle, and calculating the speed of light using a melted chocolate bar. Suggestions for further study, a time line, and sidebars on the work of other physicists of the day make this an incredibly accessible resource for inquisitive children.

Book Review: Sharp Objects

After seeing all the hype over Gone Girl and reading it for myself, I had to get the other 2 books that Gillian Flynn wrote.  Although I didn’t really like the ending of Gone Girl, I really liked Gillians writing style so I got her other 2 books – Sharp Objects and Dark Places.  I read Sharp Objects first and it did not disappoint.

The book is about a girl Camille, who moved away from her small town to Chicago to become a reporter.  When 2 girls turn up missing / killed in her small home town, she decides to go back home to write a story on it.  While there she gets wrapped up in all the rumors and ends up befriending one of the detectives on the case and they share some of the leads they are working on – and share a bit more than that as well.

Meanwhile, at home, Camille tries to get to know her young sister, Amma.  Camille’s other sister, Marian, passed away when she was young.  She was very sick and it seemed like her mother was believing that Amma was sick a lot as well.  It turns out that Amma has many sides to her and Camille was trying to figure her out as well as work on what little relationship she may have with her mother at the same time.

I assume the book gets the title because Camille was a cutter.  She cut all sorts of words in to her body.  Some negative, some positive.  She doesn’t want anyone to see them and always keeps herself hidden.

Throughout the book I had an idea of who I thought this killer was.  I bounced back and forth between two people.  I think it was written in such a way to purposely keep you questioning who you thought like I was.  I won’t say if I was right or not, but I will say that the ending of this book was a lot more satisfying than the ending of Gone Girl.  I very much so enjoyed the book and hope that Dark Places is just as good.

I was not asked to write a review for this book, it is one I read on my own time and thought that I would share with my readers.

About the Book

WICKED above her hipbone, GIRL across her heart Words are like a road map to reporter Camille Preaker’s troubled past. Fresh from a brief stay at a psych hospital, Camille’s first assignment from the second-rate daily paper where she works brings her reluctantly back to her hometown to cover the murders of two preteen girls.

NASTY on her kneecap, BABYDOLL on her leg Since she left town eight years ago, Camille has hardly spoken to her neurotic, hypochondriac mother or to the half-sister she barely knows: a beautiful thirteen-year-old with an eerie grip on the town. Now, installed again in her family’s Victorian mansion, Camille is haunted by the childhood tragedy she has spent her whole life trying to cut from her memory.

HARMFUL on her wrist, WHORE on her ankle As Camille works to uncover the truth about these violent crimes, she finds herself identifying with the young victims—a bit too strongly. Clues keep leading to dead ends, forcing Camille to unravel the psychological puzzle of her own past to get at the story. Dogged by her own demons, Camille will have to confront what happened to her years before if she wants to survive this homecoming.

With its taut, crafted writing, Sharp Objects is addictive, haunting, and unforgettable.

Giveaway: ETY Earplugs

The final giveaway in the 300th show celebration is a set of ETY Plugs earplugs.  These are the plugs that I wear to pretty much every show.  They are reusable high-fidelity hearing protection adn come with the earplugs, case and neck cord.  When used as directed they reduce noise by 12 decibels.  Most musicians have earplugs in on stage – so why shouldn’t you protect your hearing in the crowd too?

These earplugs don’t muffle things like the foam ones you can get for 50cents do.  They are just like taking the volume knob and turning it down to a more manageable level. You’ll still be able to hear the screams, your band singing and talking in between songs – but you won’t have that obnoxious buzzing in your ears after the show!
