Book Review: Adulthood is a Myth

adulthoodAdulthood Is a Myth is a pretty hilarious collection of drawings about being an adult – whatever that is.  I found myself laughing out loud and thinking that the drawings were so totally me throughout the book – and I’m sure you can find some you relate with as well.  For instance – shaking your computer and being violent towards it when the wifi is out when you could be reading a book or hanging out outside when it is down.  Not wanting to deal with other people, etc.  Definitely recommended for anyone who isn’t quite sure what being an adult is, and would much rather stay in bed all day doing nothing!

About the Book

Do you love networking to advance your career? Is adulthood an exciting new challenge for which you feel fully prepared? Ugh. Please go away.

These casually drawn, perfectly on-point comics by the hugely popular young Brooklyn-based artist Sarah Andersen are for the rest of us. They document the wasting of entire beautiful weekends on the internet, the unbearable agony of holding hands on the street with a gorgeous guy, and dreaming all day of getting home and back into pajamas. In other words, the horrors and awkwardnesses of young modern life. Oh and they are totally not autobiographical. At all.

Adulthood Is a Myth presents many fan favorites plus dozens of all-new comics exclusive to this book. Like the work of fellow Millennial authors Allie Brosh, Grace Helbig, and Gemma Correll, Sarah’s frankness on personal issues like body image, self-consciousness, introversion, relationships, and the frequency of bra-washing makes her comics highly relatable and deeply hilarious.

Recap:

Back to Back front row shows! Probably one of the only times that will ever happen for me.  This time we were on the other side of the stage which was nice, since you can’t really see Zac when you are on Taylor’s side!  After this show, I got a drumstick! Our goal was met!  I don’t remember too much specifically from this show, but I think it was the one where Erin and I got split when Locksley was breaking down the crowd so we were dramatically “fighting” with each other and they got a kick out of that.

Product Review: Aspicio Colored Tissue Paper

20160227_185045
I love giving gifts in gift bags, it makes awkward sized packages so much easier to carry, but I’m always not sure what kind of tissue paper to use in order to make the bag look even more festive.  Just plain white? Or should I go all out with colors?

For $15.90 on Amazon you can get a package of high quality deluxe colored tissue paper that is used by merchants and craft enthusiasts alike.  The first thing I noticed about this package when I opened it was how much heavier it is than other tissue paper I have used in the past.  The colors are well organized and packaged to avoid being damaged in transit and they are heavyweight and larger than the sheets you may be used to.

The sheets are 19 2/3 by 29 1/2. They won’t tear as easy as other sheets and the package contains 25 colors and a total of 100 sheets.

In addition to using them for gift wrapping, I am thinking about using them for some of my scrapbook projects as well.  You know how much I love confetti… I think this paper would make some great confetti to add to scrapbook pages and I’m sure there are a lot of other possibilities as well!

David Cook at The Warehouse

Sunday night David Cook played The Warehouse in Fairfield, CT.  Originally he was scheduled to play Stage One, but after multiple changes in the set up for the show he ended up at the larger, newer venue which I had not yet been to.  Opening up for the evening was one of my favorites, Tony Lucca! Tony did a Periscope of his show which I tried to watch Monday night but it expired about 5 seconds in on me because it was 24 hours old.  Need to keep that in mind for next time I want to use a periscope to figure out a setlist.  I did remember a few of his songs and they are listed at the end of the post. (If anyone was there or saw the periscope and knows the rest let me know what I’m missing!)

Funny story – the girl behind me was going on and on about how much she loves David Cook and he is her favorite ever and she is his #1 fan and whyyyy must there be an opening act!?  I was texting with my friend and told her “she’ll like him” before he hit the stage because we knew Tony would for sure win her over… so I wasn’t at ALL surprised when his set ended and he walked off the stage and she said… “I think I’m in love.”

David took the stage at about 9pm and played just over an hour set.  It was pretty similar set to when I saw him in November.  He thanked the crowd a lot, since we had bought so many tickets they had to move him to the bigger room and he was very thankful about that.  Before he did Declaration he went to intro the song and said “This is a song about something.”  Well, I guess that is true.  There was also a group of Hard Rock VIPs in the seats in front of me and when he checked in on them they said they wanted a personal song and for him to come in front of them and play.  He came over and did a bit of the riff from “Sweet Home Alabama” and then went back to the mic and did some of 500 miles. (Is that the name of that song? I don’t think so.)  Later on people were yelling things out and he thought they yelled for Freebird so he did a little bit of it and said that was all of the song he knew.  But people were yelling out about their birthday so he had everyone who was having a birthday raise their hand and then said happy birthday to them all.

The encore was 4 songs – including his new single Broken Windows and he was saying how whatever radio station we listen to, whether they play his style of music or not, we should call and request the song.  Even if they only do traffic, all day.  Or even if it is a sports talk radio that only talks about minor league lacrosse games. We should call and tell them we want to hear Dave Cook’s new song.

After the show I hung around to chat with Tony for a bit – since he had mentioned singing a song on Parenthood and he had actually canceled his show at the smaller next door venue in order to do it.  He had said the dressing room reminded him that he had played there before and I said that yes it was years ago! Somehow I always manage to make him feel super old I am pretty sure…

American Idol Top 8

IdolThoughts

I guess I was not paying attention and did not realize that this week would be a DOUBLE elimination.  Of course I kind of picked 2 I wanted to/thought would go home after last week anyway – Gianna and Tristan.  In no particular order, 7 of the Top 8 sang.  Then it would be revealed who would be in the Bottom 3.  They would all also sing and the judges would decide who of the 3 would finish out the Top 8 singers.

Dalton was up first – and of course did another great song, this time Radioactive.  Based on the audience screams, I think he will be around a while.

Lee did Use Somebody, which was supposedly out of his comfort zone, but I didn’t really think it was that far off from what he usually does. I’d have loved to see him do something out of left field – like rework Mariah Carey or something like David Cook would have done.  He could still make it his style but it would be a bit “shocking”

Sonika did Kelly’s Since U Been Gone which is my least fave song, maybe ever.  I thought she started off too soft and I didn’t think this was her best at all, but it will be hard for her to top last week’s performance, I think.

MacKenzie did what I wanted Lee to do – a reworked Whitney song that fits his style.  I really wanted to like it, but the background vocals were coming out stronger than his at time which I didn’t like.

LaPorsha did Beyonce’s Halo – Another strong performance.  Is there really even anything to say about her?

Trent did When A Man Loves a Woman, I don’t like that they made him try to stop doing his faces! I loved the faces and they really made him, him.  Hopefully they come back!

Well, my pick of Tristan was wrong.  And I’m kind of glad because this week she did an AWESOME performance! Much, much better than last week

Bottom 3 – Olivia, Avalon, Gianna

Avalon – Earned It – No idea why she is in the bottom. LOVE HER! Hope she makes it through

Olivia – Trouble – I wasn’t a fan of this performance.

Gianna – If I Aint Got You – please go home.

Very pleased with the results. I was surprised when Olivia had gotten fast tracked to the Top 10 anyway. and I’ve obviously wanted Gianna to go home since Day 1.

My prediction is that Lee will go home.

Music Monday: DNCE

Cake By The Ocean

Joe Jonas’ new musical project is DNCE and their first EP was released recently and is called “Swaay”.  The EP is 4 tracks including what might be the catchiest song EVER (or at the very least of 2015/2016) “Cake By The Ocean”.  The band consists of frontman Joe Jonas, former JoBro Drummer Jack Lawless, Cole Whittle and JinJoo Lee.  I found the entire EP to be a lot of fun and am enjoying the band a lot more than I thought I would. (Which is good because Joe is my favorite Jonas Brother).  It is easy to play multiple times in a row, but you will definitely end up with Cake By The Ocean stuck in your head for days!

Book Review: Stars of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Highway

highwayStars of the Rock N Roll Highway includes 20 stars. The book features a short bio on them all as well as a section on did you know. There are a lot of greats included – Elvis, BBKing, James Brown, etc.  A lot of great stories throughout. A quick read.

Book Review: Beside the Music

besideBeside the Music is about Brenda Dunkirk.  She and her husband decide to take a getaway to Orlando and she checks out another rock n roll memoir from the library before leaving.  This time she is reading Keith Kutter’s biography, bassist of 80s metal band Hydra that she loved as a teen.  Her husband is running for senate so they take a vacation to have some time to themselves, but Brenda can’t seem to put the book down.

When they get home, Brenda decides to write Keith a fan letter.  She sends it off to Australia and thinks nothing of it.  A while later, flowers are delivered to her house and she assumes they are from her husband. But they are from Keith, who wants to meet her!  They have dinner, which is interrupted by paparazzi.  Later Keith comes to Brenda’s home and starts writing a new song on her deck in the rain with her guitar.

Keith usually likes to write an entire album in the same spot so the band asks if they can stay at Brenda’s house for the time they are recording. They will hire a housekeeper and pay Brenda and Tim $50,000.  Brenda somehow gets Tim to agree… and so the band and their crew moves in!

The band living at the house puts a strain on Brenda and Tim’s already iffy marriage.  Tim ends up moving out and Brenda wants the band GONE.  But she signed a contract.  Can she get out of it? And will the band ever finish the album?

I really liked this book because it was cool to think about one of your favorite bands coming to live at your house and writing an album there and maybe even writing a song about you! Of course the book shows that it’s not all that it’s cracked up to be – needing shower schedules and having no idea when your house guests will eventually leave.  I wasn’t sure if Brenda and Tim’s marriage would survive this added pressure since you could tell in the beginning that they were already a bit on the rocks so to speak.  There was also the added pressure from Tim’s mother Portia who liked to show up unannounced and did not like Brenda.  A lot of fun characters and personalities in this book.

About the Book

Brenda Dunkirk thinks she’s the luckiest woman in the world when 80s metal band, Hydra, declares her home as their base camp while recording their comeback album. Swept up in rock and roll glamor she risks her already faltering marriage. Tim, her husband, walks out on her and Hydra’s chaos, and to make matters worse her boss is threatening to fire her if she doesn’t get her act together at work. The band will not leave until the album is done–it could be another month or it could be another year.

Ultimately Brenda must choose between the secure contentment of her marriage or the allure of rock and roll. She must decide: is it possible to be one man’s wife and another man’s muse?

Book Review: Animals that make me say EWWW!

ewwAnimals that Make Me say Ewww! Is an interesting look at some of your favorite (and not so favorite) animals.  But this book tells you all about their gross habits – like picking their nose and eating it and talks a LOT about poo.  Definitely really informative if you try to look beyond the Eww! factor, but I think a lot of kids will love reading about poo and won’t realize they are actually learning too!

Book Review: In Real Life

inreallifeIn Real Life had no synopsis of the book when I chose to select it as something I’d like to review, so I truly judged the book by its cover and decided I would like to read it. Fortunately the book cover did not steer me wrong and I did enjoy the book.

In Real Life is about Hannah who lives in California and her best friend Nick who lives in Vegas. The two met through their older siblings who had met at a concert several years earlier.  The two talk on the internet and the phone almost every day, but have never met in real life. They are now 16 years old and wanted to meet half way (they live about 4 hours apart) but Hannah’s parents had said no way after her sister Grace ends up with “food poisoning” (hungover) and can’t drive her there.

But when their parents go away on a cruise Hannah decides it is time to stop playing by the rules and Hannah, Grace and Hannah’s best friend Lo head to Vegas to surprise Nick at the House of Blues where his band is playing a concert.

Once they arrive, things aren’t quite what they seem.  Hannah had thought that Nick was the guitarist in the band and that he was single – when she arrives there is a girl hanging all over him and kissing him. And when the band takes the stage, it is Nick’s brother Alex playing guitar and Nick selling merch.

The gang goes out on the town in Vegas (with their fake IDs, of course) and when Nick tells Hannah he actually had feelings for her, Hannah runs away, even though she thinks she may feel the same.

Will this ruin their friendship or will both be able to tell their true feelings for each other ?  Well, you’ll have to read to find out because I am not telling!

One of my favorite parts of the books was how Nick sent Hannah a pressed penny from Vegas and Hannah sent him one back from Disneyland – which Nick wears on a necklace.  When they are going through Vegas they happen to find another penny machine and point it out to each other. As someone who collects these pennies I really liked to see them included in the story and being such an important thing to both of the characters!
