Kiss108 Jingle Ball

The final event of the week was the Kiss 108 Jingle Ball in Boston.  Originally I wasn’t going to go to this one because I used up all my vacation days and wouldn’t be able to have Friday off.  But then my friend made me an offer that I couldn’t refuse – 5th row tickets and a MEET AND GREET with The Wanted.

The only down side was we needed to be there by 4:30, so I had to leave the NJ hotel at 8am and drive through PA, NJ, CT and MA. (It was kind of bittersweet driving past my house exit and knowing I wouldn’t be seeing my bed for a while longer!)

As part of our VIP package we were given a backstage tour and got to see everyone’s dressing rooms and the side stage, go in the arena while Bridgit Mendler was doing soundcheck and then hang out at a pre-show party where Karmin performed.  And we also got an added bonus of meeting Alex Clare.

Everything was disorganized after that and we had NO idea when our Meet and Greet would be.  Everyone we asked told us a different time between 7:15 and 7:50. (7:50 was when Ed Sheeran was set to take the stage so we were very nervous we would miss his set!)  Finally we went over to the table and were told we had ALMOST MISSED IT.  (Thanks for the wrong information, EVERYONE!) and ended up in the back of the line.

Then they told us we could be in 2s for the photo, but wanted us to be in 4s once we got up to the front of the line. (We refused and fortunately the guy didn’t fight us on it.)  Sarah and I both like Jay the best, but he was on the far end so we decided we’d put him in the middle of the photo so we could both be on either side of him without completely ignoring the other guys.   Sarah went first and next thing I know she was throwing Jay over to me and then Max and Tom got upset and stood by the wall.  The photographer snapped a candid photo at this point that is HILARIOUS and it’ll be up on the Concert Katie Facebook page shortly! (If I didn’t get it posted already)  After the photo Jay turned and gave me a hug and a kiss on the cheek!  Unfortunately they kicked us out before I could say anything to or hug Max :(

We went to our seats to catch the tail end of Ed’s set – You Need Me I Don’t Need You and A-Team – and we showed up in his photo of the crowd!  I’m glad we got to see at least a little of him, though obviously I’d have like to see the whole set!

Next up was Cher Lloyd who did basically the same set as the night before.  She’s fun, but I’m still not totally sure if I like her or not.

Next up was Karmin who did basically the same set as the night before again. But they are fun and I don’t know why I ever didn’t like them!

Keenan Cahill was also there hanging out!

And then it was time for THE WANTED!!! Our seats were amazing, 5th row center – Jay pointed at Sarah and I during I Found You and Max winked at us (I guess he’s not so mad at us afterall, lol)  They did the same set from the night before too – Chasing The Sun, Lightning, All Time Low, I Found You and Glad You Came.  The set was over far too soon, but we’ve decided we will be hitting as many shows as we can when they come back to the US in 2013…

After The Wanted was Train who I really had no desire to see… but I sat there anyway. Their set was short – only 6 songs so it wasn’t too too bad. 50 Ways  If It’s Love, Mermaid, Drop of Jupiter, Hey Soul Sister and Drive By.

Then it was time for Justin! I did the whole show without earplugs too which was kind of dumb especially during Justin!  He did a similar set to the night before (All Around The World, Beauty and the Beat, Be Alright, Fall, Mistletoe, As Long AS you Love Me, Boyfriend and Baby) but I think he skipped out a couple of acoustic tracks and for the Christmas song he did Mistletoe and said he wasn’t sure he knew all the lyrics.  At one point he did stop but the crowd covered for him.  Before his last song – he TOOK OFF HIS SHIRT and the crowd went wild!  The set seemed to be a lot different than the night before – just that Justin seemed to be more into it and it didn’t end so abruptly like it did the night before. I felt like there was closure.

I then hung around in the parking garage for half an hour waiting for the traffic to go away because I couldn’t believe I had actually driven IN BOSTON (by myself!) and was convinced I’d get lost going home.  Which I did, but not too badly. (Though I think I had to pay an extra $5 toll I wouldn’t have otherwise. oops) I ended up making it home at 3am and made it in to work Friday before 10!

Q102 Jingle Ball Philly

Show 2 of the week was the Philadelphia Q102 Jingle Ball.  We got a hotel in New Jersey and found that it wasn’t too bad of a drive to Philly and to the venue. (We had been a little nervous about that – but it all worked out fine)

Doors were at 5, show started at 6 and at first there was next to no one in the arena area.  We had seats on the side of the stage, 8 rows back. A lot of the acts came over to the side to give us some love.  Although some (Justin Bieber) seemed to favor the other side of the stage more.

Bridgit Mendler from Disney’s Good Luck Charlie kicked off the show and did 2 songs – one was her latest single Ready or Not. (I think the other song was Hurricane)

Olly Murs was up next and he did 4 songs as compared to the 3 he did the night before.  He started with Heart Skips a Beat, ended with Trouble Maker, also did Oh My Goodness and Dance With Me Tonight.  It was nice to actually see his performance, he has a TON of energy and it is hard to get photos of him because he is always on the move! He also did the theme song from the Fresh Prince since that song mentions Philadelphia.

Third up was The Wanted – which was a bit surprising. I thought that they would be a bit later on in the show. Jay and Nathan seemed to really like coming over to our side and dancing which was awesome! Their set was a bit shorter than the night before, since they weren’t headlining.  They did Chasing The Sun, Lightning, All Time Low, I Found You and Glad You Came.

And then next on the bill was – PSY! He came out and did Gangnam Style and that was it. I don’t know if anyone would have cared if he sang anything else. He seemed like he was SO serious and really into his performance. It was fun and now I get to say I saw it live.

Next up was Ed Sheeran, who I was super excited to finally get to check out. He did Lego House, A Team, You Need Me I Don’t Need You at least. (I didn’t keep track of the setlist except for Justin and The Wanted. I know, I know.) I’m not sure that the younger crowd actually “got” him, but I was very, very impressed with his performance.

Then it was time for Cher Lloyd. There was a young girl in the seat in front of me and she was cracking me up during Cher’s performance singing along. So sassy! Cher performed Swagger Jagger, Superhero, With Ur Love, Oath and Want U Back if I am remembering correctly.

One Republic was probably the band I was least excited to see of this line up, but then I realized just how many singles they had and that I pretty much knew all their set. They started off with Secrets and also did Good Life, Apologize, they debuted a new song, Stop and Stare, and maybe some others I am forgetting. But it was a good set for them.

Next up was Karmin who I used to hate but now completely love and I want to be Amy when I grow up. They performed Hello, Crash Your Party, Look at me Now, I Told You So and Brokenhearted. (I think that was everything?) They just seem to be having so much fun on stage and before they came out we saw Nick doing push ups on the back of the stage. (The stage rotated around so they could do set ups for one performance while the other was still going on. It was genius)

Then finally it was time for Justin Bieber! The girls were obviously all there for him and they went nuts. He started his set with All Around The World and then went in to Beauty and the Beat. After that he sat on a chair and did an acoustic set including Die In Your Arms, Be Alright, Fall and then Christmas Eve. He asked if we wanted another acoustic song or to do another upbeat one and then went in to As Long As You Love Me. The acoustic portion seemed to go on forever. A bra also got thrown on stage which was pretty funny. He also did Boyfriend And he ended his set with Baby. It seemed like a really abrupt ending to the set as well and when the video came on at the end saying the show was over we were a bit confused because it didn’t seem like it was over based on how he ran off the stage, but we also didn’t think he’d do an encore.

K104′s Not So Silent Night

Tuesday night was K104′s  Not So Silent Night.  Some friends of mine found out about this show before it was really announced and that The Wanted would be headlining, so of course I had to go.  Shortly after buying a GA seat, they released VIP pit seats.  At first they said these would be “front row seats” but they were actually just access to a front pit which we’d be released into around 3pm and the show wouldn’t end til 11.  Considering this, I decided taking the wheelchair was the way to go because there was no way I was going to be able to stand that long.

The show kicked off at 5pm with Olly Murs despite the guys at the venue saying the show wouldn’t start until 6 and everyone would be doing 45 minute sets.  Olly did 3 songs – Heart Skips a Beat, Oh My Goodness and Troublemaker.  Clearly NOT a 45 minute set (we’d have been there into the next day if they did!)

Next up was The Ready Set – who did a set of More Than Alive, Young Forever, Spinnin’, Killer, Give Me Your Hand (Best Song Ever) and Love Like Woe.

After that I stopped keeping track of the setlists because I didn’t know any of the acts.  But also performing was Austin Mahone, Rita Ora, Chris Wallace, and Boys Like Girls.

Boys Like Girls frontman (I think, I was sitting and couldn’t really see anything) had the band completely stop playing when they were going to do love drunk and then called out some girl who was going to record the song and went on this big rant about how the had a ton of other videos of them performing the song the exact same way on YouTube and that we should all put our cameras away.  Of course, this was the song I had handed my camera to Sarah to take photos for me (She took all the photos but The Wanted for me so I didn’t have to stand) so I only have a couple of them.

After their set I did find a pick on the ground though that must have slipped out of someone’s hand!

The bad thing about being in the middle of the crowd was there were a lot of young girls who didn’t know how to handle themselves.  At one point, a girl tried to drink water and ended it up spitting it out all over everyone.  Thank GOODNESS it was just water or things would have gone downhill FAST. (Her friend later came back saying she did start throwing up. I am glad they got her out of there in time!)

Then there was a girl during Boys Like Girls who was attempting to crowd surf by climbing over the barricade and attempting to land on me.  I felt a foot hit my arm and then saw my friend yell at her for almost falling on me and then pushed her back over the barricade.  There was a bit of fighting going on but when security came over nothing happened.

Finally it was time for The Wanted. The crowd surged a bit so girls got in front of me that weren’t there before so I ended up 3rd row.  (The barricade had a lip and since there were already girls there, I didn’t want to have the wheelchair half on the barricade and half on the floor because it wouldn’t be stable, so these girls took advantage of that and then wondered why they kept bumping into the leg rests throughout the show. Duh!)

I *think* I have The Wanted’s set but it might not be in the right order, I tried to record a clip of each song but failed miserably. I know I forgot to record any of Heart Vacancy and the first couple are so short in time I have no idea what they are now.  I love how in the moment I am like “Oh that was enough for me to figure it out!” haha, nope (I also didn’t think so much crowd noise would be picked up – not used to the video on the new camera yet!)

One Direction 12/1

Saturday night it was time to do it all over again as One Direction had their second performance at the Mohegan Sun Arena.  As far as the setlist and everything goes, it was the same show as the night before, but of course there were little things that were different.

Camryn was once again the opening act – and she didn’t wear the shoes that were giving her so much grief the night before.  The logo she had on the screens on the sides of the stage was also different from the night before and I think she ended her set with a cover mash-up that I don’t recall having been done the night before.  During her set she was throwing t-shirts in the crowd and one hit off a girls hand and the girl behind her caught it.  The girl who’s hand it hit turned around and grabbed it from the girl who caught it and then a mother swooped in and ripped it out of her hand to give it back to the girl that caught it.  I guess Camryn saw this go down too because she ended up tossing a few more near the girl that missed it the first time.

The guys once again started with Up All Night and all around seemed to be a bit more relaxed and loose on stage.  Louis didn’t seem to look as bored and they were all doing their little dance constantly. (I love that they only have 1 dance move and throw it in basically during EVERY song.)

At one point Louis got a hold of some silly string and was getting Liam over and over again.  Then he ended up spraying some of the crowd down front as well before dropping it down to one of the guys near the barricade.  Poor Liam.

Harry joined in a bit more on the antics tonight than he did the night before – he ran up one of the ramps and then slid down trying to go between Liam’s legs who was at the bottom of the ramp.

I looked for Niall and he was on the ground.  Then he got up and kind of like bowed so I am assuming he fell over, but I completely missed how he ended up on the ground.

They seemed to talk to the crowd a lot more too.  Friday night Louis at one point said they didn’t have time for “gossip” and stopped talking, but Saturday they were all commenting on how loud and great we were and how they loved that this was their job and we made it a job for them.

Overall it was a great show and I wish I was going to MSG tonight for their headlining performance there. (It’s not too late – anyone out there got ticket connections? Please?)

One Direction – Mohegan Sun Arena – 11/30

Friday night One Direction performed once again at the Mohegan Sun Arena.  They keep calling these shows “Warm Up” shows for the big event at Madison Square Garden, which is almost a bit offensive because I couldn’t get tickets to the MSG show to save my life and it seems as though these shows aren’t quite as important to them.  But, anyway…

Every time I go to one of these shows (especially alone) before doors open I wonder why I torture myself in these insane crowds of people who just appeared on Earth the night before.  (Is this a line for the doors? Do we have to wait for them to open? My phone has a camera on it can I not bring it in?)

The night was also special for me because I was trying out a new smaller concert camera.  It only has 20x zoom compared to my old 35x but I think that it did quite well.

The opening act was once again Camryn.  I don’t recall her getting all that great of a response last time she opened either.  She kept telling people to stand and jump but most of the girls in my section (and many others that I could see) just sat.  I also have never heard an opening act complain about her shoes so many times!  I guess they were velcro and kept popping open, she ended up taking them off for half a song, then had them on again a bit later complaining again about how obnoxious they were.

The songs in between the sets once again had more girls up than Camryn.  (This is when you know it is time to re-think your opening act.)  I spotted the set list and zoomed in and was able to see most of it – except for what they’d be starting the show with so it was a surprise when they came out of the end of the catwalk to “Up All Night”.  They only did a few of the songs off of the new album which was surprising.  I am not sure if this is the same setup for their 2013 show of if they will re-work things a bit – but I am kind of hoping they re-work it (not that I have tickets – yet!) to include more songs from Take Me Home.

Louis and Niall were cracking me up for most of the night.  When Louis wasn’t standing around looking bored he was doing stupid little moves and then Niall would repeat them and they’d crack each other up.  They also were nearly running into each other constantly and diving in a different direction at the last second.  At times Liam got in on the antics as well.  (And just to note – Louis is my favorite so I am not saying he looked bored to be negative against him)

They did a cover of Wheatus Teenage Dirtbag – and I guess a lot of girls have been saying it is a new 1D song.  This is because if I remember correctly before they performed it they said that it was a NEW SONG and then after they were done asked if we liked the NEW SONG.  If you weren’t aware it was a cover it was quite easy to be confused.

Harry also tried to make a joke – asked who went to the local high school and then said that the principal called because they all missed the school day and where were they? queuing outside.  I thought it was pretty funny, but it didn’t get a great response from the crowd lol

The show was a ton of fun and then I did it all again the next night… so look for that review tomorrow w/ photos from the opposite side of the stage. Somehow I got mirror image seats – same section but on different sides of the stage. Same row too!

SK6ers Hi-Ate-Us Tour Final Show

Saturday was the final night of the SK6ers Hi-Ate-Us tour.  Yes, Hiatus. In that they are taking a break and we don’t know when we’ll be seeing them again.  In July the hiatus was announced and I wasn’t sure I’d be able to make it to a show since they were not coming to CT.  My friend Jen who got me in to the Sixers 6 years ago and I decided that we needed to be there, so we made it happen.

I won’t get into how shitty Webster Hall is as a venue in this review and that because of this I was in tears before the band even came on stage and not for any reason that I thought I’d be tearing up at the show. There may be another post about this later though, or just a letter sent to management. We’ll see!

I will say that otherwise this review was difficult to write.  The show left me speechless.  As a music fan, I think you look forward to these kinds of shows – but as a blogger? Speechless isn’t ideal.  I can’t just post a blank page with a setlist and have you “get it”.  I’m still not sure that anything I write will allow you to “get it”, but I’ll try.  They played from roughly 7:30-10:15. Nearly 3 hours – but it seemed like the show was over in a blink of an eye.  The whole train ride to the show we reminisced on some of the memories that we had from shows past (This was my 25th show, Jen has lost count and there are some that we didn’t go to together as well)

I thought the setlist was a nice mix of past, present and future.  Yes, future – they debuted a new song “I Don’t Want To Die  On The Road”.  Instead of doing just 1 or 2 covers, they did a medley of 7 covers that they had done over the years.  As they were singing this medley the memories came coming back of which shows I had heard them perform the covers at before.

I didn’t take many photos.  I took 9 during the show. 6 were of the backs of people’s heads.  Once we moved to the back of the venue I took 1 decent shot, tried to zoom in on just Stephen and got frustrated.  I decided rather than spend half the show annoyed I couldn’t get the “perfect” shot, I’d put the camera away and just take it all in.

The theme of the night was – “You keep clapping, we’ll keep playing” the only thing in our way of them playing all night was the curfew at the venue.  There were 4 encores.   One song was played in the crowd. My setlist notebook had a front and back page filled with the setlist (first time that ever happened and probably the last!)

There are 2 lyrics that I think sum up the evening – “Celebrate before it’s too late” and “See you later, see you soon”

The next chapter will continue next month, when I go see Stephen solo in Fairfield. (Hopefully Jen can come too!)  Maybe then it’ll really hit me that it is “over” (for now) because right now it all just seems like a blurry dream.

Honor Society at The Space

Last Friday night Honor Society returned to The Space for a show for the first time in 4.5 years.  This was actually the first show of theirs Lauren had invited me to, but I had to decline due to work :(   This was also the first time I had seen them in CT since July of 2008!

Opening first was The Narrative. They weren’t bad, they were quite chatty with the crowd and their setlist had 7 songs on it but I think they ended up getting cut at the end. You can check out more about them at http://www.thenarrativemusic.com/

Next up was Kicking Daisies – their set didn’t include any of the older songs from when the girls were in the band.  Also interesting was the beginning of 2011 I saw them at the space and they sold it out – so I thought for sure they’d get a huge crowd there, but the show didn’t seem even close to being a sell out.  I’m still not a fan of their new lineup and it seems like they are changing their sound as well.

Then it was time for Honor Society! Their set was basically the same as the show in New York City with the exception of them not starting out the set with Empire State of Mind.  We were able to get a spot right up front by Andy and Alex.  I was glad Mike moved around so much this night so I could see him. (Wasn’t so glad in NYC when it was impossible to take a photo).  The only bad thing about The Space is their lighting sucks.  I don’t like to use a flash for photos but I had to if I wanted anything decent, but then I felt bad for being so close and using a flash constantly so I only took a handful of photos before giving up on the camera and just enjoying the rest of the set.

Afterwards we hung around to meet the guys and were able to get photos with all 4 of them, despite the people at the venue trying to kick everyone out twice. (We didn’t listen and neither did anyone else!)

Honor Society EP release

Tuesday Honor Society played New York City to celebrate the release of their new EP, Serendipity.  Opening up was Jillette Johnson and Love Via Dance Machine (LVDM).

Jillette is from NYC and I thought she had a great voice and interacted a lot with the audience. She did a few songs including Peter Pan, When the Ship Goes Down and Cameron.  She was also accompanied by a cello, which was something I don’t think I’d ever seen before at a show.

LVDM was a group of 4 guys from Boston – Wiley, Izaiah, Alex and Jimmy.  They were very animated on stage – but unfortunately I don’t think the crowd was all that into them.  J14 Magazine was in the house checking on their performance – although their instagram photo caption made it seem like it was LVDM’s show – and not Honor Society’s.
About 9:30 Honor Society took the stage.  This was my 35th show and I think that it was the best yet.  There is always something so electric  about their New York City shows since it is their hometown crowd (and where I first saw them perform too)

I loved how they did their opening – Jason came out and started the song on keys, then Alex on drums, then Andy on bass and finally Mike came out and started singing Empire State of Mind.
The setlist was fantastic – they threw in some great covers – in addition to Empire State of Mind they did Living for the City as a segway to Living a Lie, Knew You Were Trouble (which I guess is TSwift but I honestly had no clue what they were even singing) into Here Comes Trouble, Purple Rain mixed in with Hurricane and Smells Like Teen Spirit before Nobody Has To Know!

I am really not sure what they are going to do for the set tonight in Hamden, but I don’t think there is anyway this show can be topped!  It was really just amazing and I am so proud to call myself a fan of theirs and it ha been so fun to follow their career since 2008.  I just hope someday soon they end up playing seated venues ;)

Kris Allen at Stage One

Friday night Kris Allen FINALLY returned to Connecticut for a headlining show! (He had been here a few times for radio promo and on tour with Keith Urban and Lifehouse – but never headlining since he got sick on the Idol tour in Bridgeport and couldn’t perform)

I ended up upgrading my tickets to VIP which meant we got to meet Kris before the show and he also did a song for us called “Should I” we were asked not to take video but Kris said that it is out there on YouTube.

At the M&G he asked if I spell my name with an I-E and when I said yes he said that I spell it right. I told him that some people don’t think I do because I have a Y in Kathryn so it should be katy but that’s not how I do it. He seemed surprised I had a Y in Kathryn and he said he had never seen that before and seemed to think it was a bit strange haha  (For those of you that don’t know – his wife is named Katy and I believe it is short for Katherine!)  Then he asked my mom if her name had a Y in it (it does!) and I was going to tease that we really like Y’s in my family but didn’t. ha. (My mom was so happy he asked though because she didn’t think to spell it for him but don’t like when people spell it wrong!)

The M&G was from 6:30-7 and by 7 doors were open so we went to our seats and waiting until 8pm for when Kris would take the stage (there was no opener!)

He is so adorable and such a great performer. I love seeing him!  I also like how he interacts with the crowd. There was a kid in the front row dancing around and he asked for Kris’ hat. Kris said no because then we’d see his hair and then was saying how he loved how kids just don’t care and that if he left the stage the kid would get up there and finish the show for him.  Cale teased that he was Justin Bieber and then Kris said something like.. Justin Bieber is for girls! But then whispered that he liked Justin Bieber but don’t tell anyone. (Oops!)
He also had mentioned that Connecticut was a pretty state and that he didn’t think he had been here since the Idol tour.  At that point I turned to my mom and said “but he didn’t sing!” and a couple other people yelled that out to him and then he went :-O  (Think the face he made when he won idol) and that he had forgotten and then said he was sorry from the bottom of his heart and he apologized and he had never canceled a show before that or since but when he tried to talk nothing was coming out.  Then he mentioned a couple other times that this was to make up for Bridgeport.

He sang a new song that he said will be on iTunes soon… of course – the song doesn’t yet have a name so that wasn’t very good for my setlist. I’ll have to keep a gap in my setlist book for when it does end up getting a name. He also had said that new christmas music is coming soon too! I can not wait!

Hanson at EPCOT day 2

For day #2 at Epcot, I went by myself and I went in the afternoon so I wouldn’t be at the park all day trying to find things to keep myself entertained with.  I got there about 2pm and hit up The Seas and The Land and then went “around the world”.  About 3:45 I was going to make another loop around the World Showcase, but there was a drawbridge that was up (that I had no idea even existed) and so since I was stuck waiting for the globe to pass through, I decided to just go and get in line for the Hanson show.  It was about an hour wait and I ended up right up front in the spot I had for Show #3 the night before.

For Show #2 I decided to stay in the back after going to get dinner (Mickey ice cream, of course!) and then after a few songs I went and got back in line.  I could still kind of see the show from the line and I could hear it loud and clear.  This was the only set that they did a cover at – Oh Darlin – one of my favorites!

For Show #3 I was back at my up close front spot (which I ended up having for 3/6 shows!) but this time there were people in front of me that stood (the other 2 shows didn’t have that) so I did have to move around a bit more in order to be able to see – but it was still a great way to end the night.

For there being some repeat songs in each of the sets, I think they did a great job mixing up the other songs and we got a great variety of songs.  It was definitely a ton of fun and I am seriously considering going back again next year should Hanson perform again. (Provided I still have vacation left in October, considering they are doing a world tour and I will also be seeing them in Jamaica in January!)
