Smiley Cookies – Share a Smile!

Halloween is just around the corner, and I am sure that you are wondering what kind of Halloween Party Snacks there are out there.  Look no further than SmileyCookies and their Halloween Cookies!

The cookies arrived promptly after I was sent notification that they had been mailed.  They came in a packing box, carefully wrapped with lots of bubble wrap so they wouldn’t be damaged during shipping.

Inside the box was another box, with adorable Smiley Cookies all over it.  Inside were a dozen Halloween jack-o-lantern cookies smiling back at me.  They were wrapped in shrink wrap and it did its job – the cookies were all in one piece and tasted delicious, they were soft not hard or stale from their trip to me!  Even after a few days of being left on the counter in their container – they still tasted as they did when they first arrived!

The whole family was glad to get to try the cookies and all had rave reviews that they were “really good”.  If you’re throwing a Halloween Party, looking for something to put in a Halloween Gift Basket, or even for something to hand out to trick-or-treaters, look no further than Smiley Cookies and their Halloween Cookies!

Also you should know that these are made in a Nut Free facility! This is great if you aren’t sure if neighborhood kids or your children’s classmates may have an allergy and you want to give out these cookies as snacks.  My brother has a nut allergy so it was nice to know that I could give him a cookie and not have to worry about it possibly having come in contact with any nuts.

Hanson in Boston MA

Sunday night it was time for the second show of Hanson’s Musical Ride tour that I’d be attending. The winning album for this show was the band’s 2nd album – This Time Around.  Siobhan Magnus from American Idol was also in attendance.  I was hoping maybe the guys would pull her on stage for a song, but they didn’t.

We opted to take the T in to Boston rather than driving in and parking near the venue.  This meant that we had to catch a train before the last train at 12:35 so “I’m a pumpkin!” was often mentioned throughout the evening.

When we arrived, we asked about ADA seating and were told just to let them know when we got through the line.  Since that made me a bit nervous, my friend Maribeth called and got us on an “ADA List” and we were told we needed to be back at 6:45 for doors.  We were some of the first people in to the venue and we quickly realized that the ADA section they had roped off had a really bad view – mainly because there were HUGE speakers hanging down that would completely block everything.  We were told that we couldn’t move a chair outside the roped section and I was kind of panicking, but then we were moved up to the balcony. All by ourselves!  By the time the show started we had 6 others up there with us, but it was really cool to be in an area and not need to worry about balancing (we had seats), people’s heads or hands being in the way of photos or anything like that!

Charlie Mars was once again the opener.  I will give him credit for not playing his set in the same order as the previous night, but his stories were all pretty much the same as the night before.

Then finally Hanson took the stage.  They did all the songs of This Time Around (which you’d think would be expected since they said theyd be playing each of the winning albums in their entirety, but they have been skipping a song or two here and there) as well as their singles and some other album songs.  When it came time for the encore, I wasn’t sure what they would be doing since they had played all of the album in the regular set.  However, I was pleasantly surprised when they came out and did a cover of Weezer’s “Troublemaker”!  I love getting to hear new songs live from Hanson and with 5 of 5 last year I am pretty much at a standstill with album songs  – but covers are always welcome!

Boston was marked as my 50th time hearing “MMMBop” live (they play it at every tour stop but they don’t do it at every radio performance which is why there is the 13 shows I have not heard it at) and Troublemaker became my 150th different Hanson song I had heard live. (I think I’ve heard over 1,000 songs from them total – but obviously that is many repeats!)

Boston’s limited poster featured a picture of all 3 guys, so I opted to buy another one.  Then I left in in the restroom.  As I realized it and went back to the stall, a girl was coming out with it and gave it to me.  Thank goodness she was honest and didn’t try to pass it off as her own! (Although I would have known it was mine by the hairband I used as the rubberband)  Nice to know that there are still nice people out there 🙂

Book Review: Weirder Than Marshmallows by Dan Fogg

Sponsored by Tomoson.comI may not find marshmallows weird, but then again, maybe I just never really thought about them all that much. I usually just eat them.  Dan Fogg, on the other hand, has thought about them and finds them to be weird. He explains why in “Weirder Than Marshmallows” which is a collection of his essays.

The book, however, is not about Marshmallows. It is about things that Dan finds even weirder than marshmallows.  He divides the stories in to 5 categories:

Do Not Stop on Tracks – showcasing warnings that should never have to be warned. (You know you have seen these signs and pointed them out to your friends and had a good laugh about them!)

En Masse – contains stories of mass ignorance.

Technology Sucks explores the hazards of the technological age. (Dan comments that you need a degree in order to use some technology. I was about to protest this and then I realized… I have an engineering degree so I guess that’s why technology works for me – most of the time, anyway)

That’s Just Freaky features Twilight Zone like tales of paranormality. (Those things that just can’t be explained any other way!)

Weird Stuff is stuff that is… well, weird.

This book is a quick read and pretty amusing.  I’d definitely give it 4.5 – 5 stars.  After the 5 sections mentioned above, there are some musings about life and things in general that are tacked on to the end of the book.  Almost every essay I was able to relate to in some way – most of them because they were rants that I have made to friends and family and coworkers in the past. (Especially loose vs lose!)

As a special limited offer, if you purchase Weirder than Marshmallows for the Kindle and forward the receipt to nightfire publications: dc@nightfirepublications.com they will send you a special Scentsy Pumpkin Marshmallow Scent Circle!

Hanson Toad’s Place

On Saturday, Hanson brought their Musical Ride tour to New Haven, CT to Toad’s Place. Each date was posted up on the band’s official website, hanson.net, along with a poll. Each poll included 3 albums and the winner of the vote would be played in its entirety at the show. For New Haven, the band’s debut album, Middle of Nowhere won (by a narrow margin).  This show ended up being my 250th concert (overall) and 62nd Hanson show.

Before the show, we went to get something to eat and as we walked by we heard Zac soundchecking “Lucy” which is his lead vocal song from Middle of Nowhere and I completely freaked out.  Turned 12 years old again freakout, I don’t know what came over me!

Each night, the band also has 25 limited edition posters available.  I had been looking through images of some of the past shows and the only one I didn’t particularly like was the one with a Buffalo on it from Phoenix.  Wouldn’t you know that New Haven’s was a Buffalo?  But I had to get it since this was my “hometown show”

Doors were relatively early, at 6pm, because after the show Toad’s would be having a dance party!  Hanson would need to be off stage by about 9:45.  We got inside and went straight to merch for the buffalo poster. Then we snagged a spot near the soundboard for the evening and waited some more.

Charlie Mars was on first, at 7pm.  I really had a hard time getting in to him.  He played everything acoustic and I think that was why. It really didn’t get my pumped and he even commented that Hanson shows might have been better if he brought his whole band to back him.

Hanson took the stage at 8pm and started with the tour namesake song, Musical Ride.  6 songs in they started with Middle of Nowhere and the songs were mixed in, they didn’t do the album in order or anything like that. (But in between songs I kept counting out what songs they did and what were still to come because 14 years later I still have that tracklisting memorized!)

During the acoustic set, Taylor forgot the second verse to Kiss me When You Come Home and Isaac and Zac were teasing him and asked us to sing it but then Taylor said “I just remembered it!” But we helped him out a bit.  It always amazes me when a band forgets the words to their own song… but I guess they do have a lot of songs to remember!

They ended the night with an encore of With You In Your Dreams which was  bit of a downer, but what are you gonna do.

After the show,  I wanted to find a seat but as we walked by one of the doors, Zac walked out! A few minutes later Taylor and Isaac walked out with a gang of security.

We hung around hoping one of the guys would come out to sign, but one of the venue guys walked by and said the guys wouldn’t be coming out.  This is when I announced “They said that before I got my first picture with Zac. He came out!”  Turns out, history repeated itself and Zac was out by the buses.  There was no barricade and I don’t do well in pushing crowds so I sent my friends up with my poster.  They met him but weren’t able to get it signed.  So we waited a bit and Maribeth and I ventured into the now crowd which had thinned out a bit.  I was able to get my Buffalo signed and we each got a photo with Zac.  By the time I got back to my car I couldn’t feel my feet, but it was worth it!

Book Review: Thunder Dog by Michael Hingson and Susan Flory

Michael Hingson became blind due to excess oxygen in the hospital when he was born.  His parents made the decision to not enroll him in any special schools and to treat him as “normal”.   Thunder Dog tells the story of his guide dog, Roselle, and his escape from the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.  It also tells of his life growing up and some of the challenges he has been forced to face due to people not knowing how to deal with someone who is blind. (For instance – his parents let him ride a bike around the neighborhood and a neighbor called up to let them know their blind son was riding a bike around!)

The recollection of them leaving the World Trade Center from the 78th floor and going down 1,463 stairs was incredibly emotional to me.  I liked that the chapters alternated between the events of September 11th and his life growing up because if not I am not sure I could have made it through the entire book if it was strictly focused on the heavy story of the attacks.

Towards the end, there are also several chapters from Mike’s wife Karen’s point of view.  I can’t even imagine what she must have been going through! Mike called her once when the first plane hit, not knowing what kind of explosion had happened and told her he’d call her later to update her.  Of course, later it was nearly impossible to get through on cell phones and Karen watched everything unfold on the television with no idea where her husband was. She also had to field phone calls from friends and family calling to see if Mike was ok, having no idea what had happened since he had first called her.

I purchased a copy of this book on September 11th when Thomas Nelson was doing a promotion selling it for Nooks and Kindles for $1.99.  It retails for $22.99. I was not required to write a review of this book, it was simply something I wanted to share with my readers.

About The Book

A blind man and his guide dog show the power of trust and courage in the midst of devastating terror.

It was 12:30 a.m. on 9/11 and Roselle whimpered at Michael’s bedside. A thunderstorm was headed east, and she could sense the distant rumbles while her owners slept. As a trained guide dog, when she was “on the clock” nothing could faze her. But that morning, without her harness, she was free to be scared, and she nudged Michael’s hand with her wet nose as it draped over the bedside toward the floor. She needed him to wake up.

With a busy day of meetings and an important presentation ahead, Michael slumped out of bed, headed to his home office, and started chipping away at his daunting workload. Roselle, shivering, took her normal spot at his feet and rode out the storm while he typed. By all indications it was going to be a normal day. A busy day, but normal nonetheless. Until they went into the office.

In Thunder Dog, follow Michael and his guide dog, Roselle, as their lives are changed forever by two explosions and 1,463 stairs. When the first plane struck Tower One, an enormous boom, frightening sounds, and muffled voices swept through Michael’s office while shards of glass and burning scraps of paper fell outside the windows.

But in this harrowing story of trust and courage, discover how blindness and a bond between dog and man saved lives and brought hope during one of America’s darkest days.

Book Review: The Soul Reader by Gerard D. Webster

I thought this book was great.  Apparently it is a sequel, but I didn’t realize that until I had went over to Amazon to review the book there.  I didn’t feel like I was missing out on anything by not having read the book previous to this one.  Ward and Carrie are writing a book together (it is Carrie’s, but she ask’s Ward for help) about some bad things that have gone down.  3 men were killed and all were thought to be accidents, however, Ward and Carrie believe there is something else behind it and they were just made to look like accidents.  The two enlist the help of some others as well and try to crack the case on the Culbera.

There is some drama when Ward reveals to Carrie that he can see people’s souls (hence the title, The Soul Reader) about 3/4 of the way through the book.  He doesn’t like one of the men that she has aligned herself with and thinks he is evil.  Carrie thinks that Ward may just be jealous (as they used to date, but are currently exes) and doesn’t feel threatened at all when this guy asks to meet her on his yacht.  Was Ward right about being able to read people at such an intimate level? You’ll have to read The Soul Reader to find out.

Although the book has 40+ chapters, I managed to read it in just one day.  I was riveted to this murder mystery and could not put it down!! I think anyone who enjoys a good mystery novel will really enjoy this book.  Also – I usually can figure out what the heck is going on in these type stories early on.  NOT the case with this book! It kept me completely in shock with every plot twist and turn.

About the Book

In The Soul Reader, Ward McNulty is a man torn between seeking justice or forgiveness. It is in discovering the true identity of his father’s murderer while protecting the woman that he loves that he finds both.

Book Review: Hermie, a Common Caterpillar by Max Lucado

Hermie a Common Caterpillar is by Max Lucado and is intended for children who are just learning how to read. However, I am a big baby and the cover was cute so I judged a book by its cover and decided I would read it.  Hermie is a common caterpillar, he has no spots or stripes he is just solid colored.  His friend Wormie, is the same.  Except both Hermi and Wormie can talk to God.  Usually, they are ok with being common because they can talk to God, but sometimes they see other bugs who are strong or with a cozy house on their backs and again wonder why they are so plain.  God continues to tell them that he is not done with them yet and that he loves them just the way they are.  Just when Hermie finally accepts that he is common, he goes to sleep and wakes up as a beautiful butterfly!

This was a really cute book and obviously a really quick read. It is a great way to teach the lesson that God made you how you are for a reason and just because you think you might be plain  – he just might not be finished with you yet and in time you will also become a beautiful butterfly. The book also had great illustrations to go along with the story.

Book Description

This Max Lucado’s Hermie & Friends® best-selling story now available in easy-to-read format!

Hermie and his friend Wormie have always felt common. They don’t have stripes or dots, they aren’t very strong, and they can’t find anything special about themselves. But every time they pray, God tells them that He loves them all the time just as they are and that He isn’t finished with them yet. When Hermie becomes a beautiful butterfly, he realizes just how special God’s plan is for him!

This classic story has been revised for kids to read and enjoy on their own as a Lever 2 Reader. With fresh new art and a story kids can read themselves, plus a new, low price—this classic story will find a whole new generation of kids who love Hermie and his garden friends!

Book Reviews: Captured Prey by Craig Odanovich

In September, I reviewed The Black Widow Trainer, the first book in the Black Widow Series by Craig Odanovich.  This month I review the second in the series, Captured Prey.

Since we left Misty, her divorce from her husband has been finalized and she has been hanging out in Argentina with Gabriella.

She lets Gaby pick her next client and it turns out to be a beady eyed man that Misty is not in the least bit attractive to, however, she has a contract that she must stick to to be paid, so she tries to put the fact that she is not attracted to this client aside.  While in Texas, she falls for the client’s ranch’s foreman – when her client finds out he tries to put a stop to it.

As always with Misty, there is a lot of drama and eventually the contract is broken by the client (thanks to his wife who was looking for a reason to divorce him that would be his fault so she would get more than her pre-nup)

After her client in Texas, she takes a client in Washington DC that is a congressman.  Of course, there is more drama when the woman running against the congressman tries to bring him and Misty down with the help of her client in Texas!  One of Misty’s past clients comes to the rescue – BIG TIME! And saves Misty (and all her friends) butts.   Her bodyguard, Miguel, seems to be out of commission for a while after recovering from an altercation with some burglars who were looking for dirt on Misty for the congresswoman.

The book sets up for the possibility that Misty may retire from her profession… or not!  She is in love with the foreman from Texas – but of course not without some drama there as well.  Will their relationship last and have her leave her job as the black widow trainer? Or will she try to work out a deal with him like she did with her now ex-husband?

Unfortunately the 3rd book does not look like it will be released until March next year, but there is an excerpt at the end of the book and it sounds like a familiar face from Book #1 returns…

I received free copies of Book 1 and 2 from Greenleaf Book Group in exchange for mentioning the books on my blog. I was not otherwise compensated nor was I asked to write a favorable review.  All opinions are 100% mine.

Baseball Pennies

One thing I like to collect are elongated pennies.  More specifically, ones from baseball stadiums or other locations with baseball related designs smashed on them.

For whatever reason, this year I decided to not see what coins I was missing until nearing the end of the baseball season.  This is never a good idea, but somehow I just keep pushing it off, figuring I would get to things eventually. (Which I did… but it was extremely panicked and scrambling at the last second, which is unlike me!)

Each stadium doesn’t have a machine and each stadium that does have one doesn’t always replace it each season.  However, it’s always a toss up over what new machines there will be each year and unless you know someone going to every ball park several times a year to check on things, it is easy to be left in the dark until something shows up on ebay.

This year the new pennies were from the Twins, Yankees (2 sets), Phillies and Cardinals. (I think. I may be missing out on some!)

I’m going to have to make a promise to myself to keep up with things a little bit better next season – start looking and trading early (and often!) and be prepared for machines to pop up anywhere at any time!

If you are also an elongated collector, I encourage you to check out www.tecnews.org (which I design and run!) and join the club if you are not already a member! Let them know #3511 sent you 😉

If you’d like to find out if there is a penny machine near you – be sure to check out www.pennycollector.com‘s listings. They have a ton of machines listed, though it is not all – so you should always be on high alert when out on the town (or at the ball game!)
