Honor Society at the Garden State Plaza

Saturday afternoon, Honor Society performed at Macy’s at the Garden State Plaza in Paramus, NJ.  The performance was at the “M Style Lab” in the junior’s section of Macy’s to help promote the Macy’s and I Heart Radio Rising Star contest, which Honor Society is a finalist in.

I wasn’t quite sure how a performance in a store was going to work, but for the most part they seemed to know what they were doing.  The show kicked off at 3pm and the guys did 5 songs.  Then it was time for the M&G.  The line wrapped through the store so we were able to do a bit of shopping while waiting!  The guys signed the classroom poster (from 2008?) and chatted a bit with everyone.  I guess some girls hung around after the M&G to try and get pics with the guys and were tweeting that security practically had to carry the guys away because they didn’t want to leave! (They are originally from NY/NJ but since moving out to LA their trips back east are a bit less frequent than we all would like.)

Setlist and photos below… it was a good time and my 31st Honor Society show!

Honor Society New York City!

Wednesday night Honor Society played a hometown/homecoming show at the Webster Hall Marlin Room in New York City.  The train ride there was fun, as we ended up sitting next to the bathroom and a drunk kid broke the lock on the door so we ended up having to keep an eye on the door whenever anyone went in and had to stop a couple people from walking in on someone else lol

Doors were already open when we made it to Webster Hall (and we walked past a block that was blocked off because Obama was in town) so we made our way inside.  They were REALLY thorough with checking bags.  Like to the point where it was kind of wrong that the lady was pulling everything out of our bags (I offered to take it out for her because I’d prefer her NOT touch my stuff and she said no and started grabbing everything herself. How rude!) And she took my sharpie from me.  I’m pretty sure it was on its last leg anyway, but still. The fact that she even FOUND it in my jam packed purse was kind of ridiculous. (And I assure you I was not going to use it for anything inappropriate – I usually have them in there just in case I find someone I want an autograph from and to be honest I didn’t even really know it was still in there!) While I was getting everything torn apart from my purse Alex came over and tapped me on the shoulder. I don’t know why because when I turned he wasn’t facing me to talk to me or anything haha.

Sunderland was already playing by the time we got inside, apparently their mics weren’t working in the beginning of their set but we missed that.  Alex Goot went on second and then The Trace.  Honor Society took the stage at about 9:30 and played the same set as they did in New Jersey.  There was so much fog being pumped in (something that ALWAYS has me sneezing the next day, I don’t understand it) that it was nearly impossible to get a photo with a flash and without a flash the guys were moving around a bit too much with the poor lighting to actually catch a decent photo.  But the show was high energy, as always, and we got a video of Over You.  I think I may have to edit some of it down to upload it to youtube but I will post it once it is up and running so you can all check it out and fall in love with Honor Society…  It was a bit bittersweet though because we had gone from seeing them at the Knitting Factory, to selling out Irving Plaza, to selling out Gramercy Theater, then Irving Plaza again (without the help of the Jonas Brothers) and then Nokia / Best Buy Theater in Times Square… so to see a 500 capacity show not quite to capacity was kind of sad.  HOWEVER the Times Square show was a weekend and this was a Wednesday so that may have had something to do with it because it was a school/work night – but still…. frustrating that it seems so many have moved on 🙁

After the show we bolted to the merch table to be first in line for the meet and greet, but still had to wait almost an hour for them to come out.  We had never been first in line before so that was pretty cool 😉  I told the guys it was my 30th show and Mike and Andy told me that that made me an Honor Society veteran! And I told Andy about Hanson’s beer and he said he’d have to try it when it became available lol  (I still can’t believe  they’re doing that but whatever)

We were able to grab a drink at Grand Central before hopping on the 12:15 back home.  Of course the train stopped on the “wrong” side – aka the inbound side with the HUGE gap. I wasn’t sure how I’d handle it being half asleep but I managed.   Also – I’m going to have to give Webster Hall an F on being ADA compliant because no one ever responded to my email about getting a seat and it didn’t even look like anyone was around who worked at the place to ask (aside from the bag checking lady who did not seem like she was someone I really wanted to deal with!)

Honor Society Mexicali Live November 29

Honor Society is hitting the road this fall in support of the Salvation Army on the Rock The Red Kettle tour.  Tuesday night they played Mexicali Live in Teaneck, NJ.  It was a raining night which made the drive there a bit of a pain in the butt, but I made it with time to spare before doors and soon was comfortably sitting at a table along the side in what was a hybrid of handicapped seating and reserved restaurant seating.  I ordered a bite to eat for dinner and waited for the show to start!

Honor Society was also selling Alex’s drum head that I guess had broken or decided to be replaced for $60.  Would have loooved to have it (even though $60 was all I had in my wallet) but the women in the door just before me snatched it! So close! Ah well. Not sure what I would have done with a huge drumhead anyhow.

There were 4 opening bands – each of which treated us to a cover – Hollywood Ending was up first and did Jonas Brothers Year 3000.  Sunderland was the second band of the night and did a cover of Jimmy Eat World’s The Middle in their set.  The Trace was up third and performed a cover of Foster the People’s Pumped Up Kicks and Alex Goot treated us to TWO covers – Vanessa Carlton’s 1000 miles (after watching White Chicks this weekend – that had me cracking up) and a medly of Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream and Firework with Taio Cruise’s Dynamite thrown in for good measure.

Honor Society did not end up taking the stage until 10pm, when the show kicked off at 6:30.  As much as I love being introduced to new bands (they were actually all decent at this show, surprisingly!) 4 opening acts is just a bit too much.  They played for about an hour.  The set was a mix of new and old, as they are promoting their latest EP, A Tale of Risky Business Part 2.  They also threw in a cover of Jane Says by Janes Addiction and threw in a little Justin Timberlake (!!) in the middle of Over You.  (I do not support Justin’s acting career but would love to see him come back to music, particularly with NSYNC. I’ll keep dreaming)

The guys were all dressed in matching suits for the show which was quite a change from their usual stage clothes, but certainly a welcome one!  After the show we waited for the meet and greet and got through in less than an hour, which I think is some sort of record! The guys all asked if I’d be going again to the NYC show (of course I am!) and said it was nice to see me again.  I feel like I should be writing more about this show but I am just SO exhausted (Not sure why I thought 3 shows in a row – with reviews starting the day of the 3rd show here on the blog were a good idea!)

Setlist under the cut and a review of the NYC show to hopefully be posted tomorrow 🙂

Honor Society at the Gramercy Theater

Sunday night Honor Society took their “Wherever You Are” Tour to the Gramercy Theater in New York City.  The show was oversold by at least 50 tickets and was a huge hometown crowd!  Opening was I Love Monsters (also from NYC), Katelyn Tarver and Action Item (from NJ).

Things got started out a bit late – the M&G was supposed to go in at 3pm but ended up going in at 3:30, which then pushed doors back and of course the venue staff really had no idea what was going on. (but what else is new?)  However, the show did not start late – I Love Monsters went on while there were still people outside (and lots of them).

Things got delayed again when checking the equipment before Katelyn and Action Item’s sets went a little bit long.  I think Action Item’s set may have even been cut a bit short to make sure that Honor Society had ample time to perform.

Honor Society’s set started out similar to the MA show on Friday, but they added in “Sing For You”, “Gentleman After Dark” (I was psyched to hear this one live!) and “Full Moon Crazy” (They also did not do “When I Get Home”)

At times, the guys just took a step back to take in all the cheering after songs. It had been over a YEAR since they had played in New York City so we were all definitely excited for them to be there!

After the show the line for the after show M&G wrapped around the block. (If you pre-ordered their soon to be released EP, you got a wristband for a photo with the band after the show)  Things were a bit rushed but I managed to get a hug from Andy even though they “weren’t allowed” and he told me that they’d be around again soon.  Let’s hope so!

When we made it back to Grand Central we wanted to take the 10:22 train back.  However, it had no track listed for where to get on. (We had picked up food at 7-11 and really wanted to be sitting down and eating it!)  We waited and waited watching the big screen to see when the track would pop up, worried that we’d be delayed – or worse – the train would be canceled and we’d be stuck there another hour.  It was not until after 10pm (We got to the station around 9:45) that a track was listed and by that point everyone was running to get to the track.  The train arrived shortly after and we gave everyone a chance to get off before making sure to get a seat.  The train was PACKED, tons of people standing.

On the way home, getting off my exit there is a blinking red light (if it is after midnight).  I was going to go right, but a car was coming down the hill from my left, so I waited even though I might have had enough time to make the turn. (I get paranoid and figure it is always best to just wait until nothing is coming than try to judge if I can make it or not).  A car came FLYING down the exit ramp and turned left – definitely cutting off the car I was waiting to pass by.  Turns out – it was a COP car and the lights immediately went on and he made a U-turn to pull over the speed demon.  Good thing I waited – I definitely didn’t want to accidentally cut off a cop!

Setlist is under the cut!

Honor Society at Showcase Live

Last night Honor Society played at Showcase Live in Foxboro, MA.  If you were one of the first 50 ticket buyers you got to go to a preshow M&G with all 3 of the acts from the tour – Katelyn Tarver, Action Item and Honor Society.

Alex was really the only one that talked to me (aside from a hello nice to see you from the others) – but he was talking to me about a show I wasn’t even at! (CT last year – I skipped it because of Hanson’s 5 of 5 the same night) I think he decided I was there since Lauren and Christine were.. haha. In his defense, very rarely are Lauren and I not together at a show!

I Love Monsters was the first opening act of the night, followed by Katelyn Tarver and then Action Item.  Then it was time for the main event – Honor Society!  They have not toured in over a year so it had been a LONG while since we saw them (with the exception of Mike and Jason who performed in November – but even that was a LONG time ago!)
While the set was short – only about an hour – it was jam packed with great music and was a ton of fun.  By preordering the new Honor Society EP we got a chance to get a photo with them at the end of the nigh.  It was very quick and we didn’t get to talk with the guys as much as we would have liked – but it is always nice that they remember us and ask when they will be seeing us again (tomorrow for me!)

I think one of the highlights of the night for me was hearing the Nobody Has To Know (my favorite HS Song) / Jay Z 99 problems mashup.  Just when I thought that song could not get any better!

After the show, we drove about an hour out from the venue (It was a little over 2 hours away from here) and stopped for gas and at this point Christine realized that she did not have her cell phone.  I called it twice and when we heard nothing ringing we figured it must have fallen out of her pocket when we went to the restroom after the show.  We sat at the gas station for about 20 minutes figuring out what to do.  We figured if the movie theater definitely had the phone – we should probably go back and get it, even though it meant an extra 2 hours on to our trip.

Lauren called the movie theater where we went to the restroom and they said that no one had turned in a phone and it was not anywhere on the floor in the bathroom.  Christine was becoming more and more panicked so Lauren told her to get in the passenger seat and she would drive back to Christine’s (they had been planning to switch driving anyhow) while Christine tried to figure out what she needed to do with the phone company to get the phone turned off.  When Lauren went to get in to the drivers seat – what was sitting there? Christine’s phone.  We didn’t hear it ringing because she had her volume turned down a bit AND she was sitting on it.

Just another ridiculous story to add to the Honor Society files…

Honor Society CSTF Fundraiser November 27

Saturday night, Jason and Michael of Honor Society performed at the Palisades Center Mall in West Nyack, NY for a Clarkstown Summer Theater Festival Fundraiser.  Jason had been a member of the group when he was younger and his father is still involved with the program.

We were not really sure what to expect, especially since half of the group would not be present.  However, I was pleasantly surprised and really enjoyed the program.

It was a bit like VH1 storytellers, and Mike and Jay told about their early bands, how they formed a band together after Mike’s first band of 8 years had disbanded and how that band evolved into the Honor Society that we know of today.  In between their chatting, they would play songs from that “era” which was really cool as many of them I had not heard before and a few I have not heard in a couple of years.  They even threw in a few very very new songs – some of which were not even finished yet!

In between they answered questions – when asked who he would love to perform with, living or dead, Mike said he was good with being on stage with Jason! So cute! Jason said he likes performing with Mike but would like to perform with John Lennon too and maybe they could perform as a trio.  When Jason said the animal he would most like to be was a squirrel, they broke out into “Idiot Squirrel”, a song it seemed they had just made up on the spot!

They played and answered questions for about an hour and a half, which was a lot longer than I was expecting, but it was definitely most appreciated.  After the show we got to meet Mike and Jason as well as Just Kait who opened the show with a short 4 song set.

After the show we went to eat with some of our friends at a restaurant that we be donating part of the check to the CSTF, which was really cool. The manager came by to thank us for eating there and said they’d probably end up donating about $500.

The ridiculously long set list is under the cut! (Although I do not know the names of all of the songs that they did!) And for photos and video check out www.honorsocietylive.com

Honor Society 5/2 – Boston House of Blues

When we got to HOB it seemed liked there were a lot of girls there.  But none of them seemed to have wristbands for soundcheck / M&G; and it didn’t make sense that they would already be inside because Honor Society was probably at the very least just making their way over to the venue.  We wandered around a bit and found Kat, who we knew we needed to find to get the wristbands.  Somehow we magically ended in the front of the line for the soundcheck, which was pretty exciting!

It had to have been in the high 80s, if not hotter, while we waited in line.  I’m honestly a bit surprised I am not sunburned.  Finally we were let in about 5pm and they scanned our tickets as well so we knew we would be staying inside.  We made our way to the stage and were in the front row!

The guys came out and did basically the same thing for soundcheck as they had done in New York City.  See U In The Dark, When I Come Home and part of Where Are You Now with a fan on stage with them (Shiloh).  They also answered a few fan questions which is the unrehearsed and fun part of the soundcheck.

Then we all lined up for the meet and greet.  It looked as though some girls opted out of the meet and greet in order to get front row, and I had debated trying to stay from row for the show but I’m pretty sure we made the right decision to get out of the crowd and hang off to the side.

The meet and greet was rushed, so we really didn’t get to say too much more than a quick hello.  Then we made our way to the restroom which was PLASTERED in signs saying there was a stage of emergency and we should not consume tap water.  A water main broke in the city and it affected the drinking water of something like 2 million people. CRAZY!

We grabbed a spot near the outer rail and waited for the show to begin!  Ashlyne Huff was up first, again, and we actually got to see her whole set this time.  I think she is great and her new album is out May 11! I will definitely have to check that out.  (I also have a sampler from the NYC show I will have to listen to as well!)

Next up was Just Kait.  Her drummer had decided since it was so hot he was going to play in only shorts. Which was probably a good idea, I am sure the stage lights are pretty hot, combined with it being in the 80s or hotter outside… I still really couldn’t get into her set.  She seems like a cool girl, but I don’t know, something was missing.  She also liked messing with the crowd – since every time she mentioned “Honor Society” the crowd would scream.

Then it was time for the main event, Honor Society! I had said I was going to take it easy, since my throat was sore and my voice was getting scratchy, but I just couldn’t contain myself when they came out to “Rock With You”  I decided to only “sing” along (as loud as I could haha) and not do any screams after/during songs or anything like that because those screams hurt the worst.

We were hoping for This Bed Is An Ocean again – especially after the teaser of a couple of old school songs, but they didn’t do it 🙁

I am also pretty sure Mike spotted us early on, because he was looking our way a lot!  Apparently Andy also noticed and pointed at us – twice – and somehow I missed it both times.  I wonder where I was looking? 😉

After the show (which was my 25th!) we opted to skip the merch M&G; and go directly home.  On the way home, my car appropriately hit 25,000 miles!  Now it’s time to schedule some maintenance for it!

I will try to make a week in review photo post in the next couple of days!

Honor Society 5/2 – Boston, MA – Hot Topic

Sunday night was my 7th show in 7 days (or 8th show in 9 days!)  I had never done that many in a row before (and I’m not sure I will ever do it again!) and my throat was killing me, my voice was going in and out and my legs were shaky – and this was all before leaving my house!

First up on our agenda was to head to the Natick Mall to Hot Topic to meet Honor Society.  When I got to Lauren’s I went to plug in the GPS, only to find that the car adapter had completely fallen apart.  It had some battery power but we weren’t sure how much and we really knew nothing about where we were going.  While I started driving north, Lauren went digging around in the car for pieces and somehow managed to put it back together.  (Well, almost! There were a couple of extra pieces – but it WORKED and that was all that mattered)

The signing at the mall was to start at 3pm and we got to the mall around 1pm.  It was HUGE and it was getting hotter outside by the second.  We went by and saw there was 1 girl in line – who actually recognized us as being CT fans and saw us at the train station last week.  We decided to go to Friendly’s.  Whenever I go to a Friendly’s they are always slow as anything, and it was no exception.  It appeared they were very short staffed and we waited to be seated.  Once we were seated, the manager came over to serve us and we did get our food pretty quickly.  However we waited an extra half an hour for our check – finally we were able to catch a waiter’s attention and get out of there and back in line.

When we got back over to Hot Topic there were maybe 50 people in front of us.  We were nervous because we had soundcheck at the show and it was 30 minutes away and check in began at 3:15.  We had no idea if we would make it.  Pretty promptly at 3pm the line started moving.  I had my Fashionably Late CD for them to sign and Lauren had her version of our 2008 scrapbook. (I had gotten mine signed in February of 09)  Jason was first and I said hi and told him how we were trying to make it over to HOB in time for the Soundcheck.  He said we’d all be racing over there and to drive carefully!  Next was Alex and we said hi and then he and Jason were talking about Lauren’s book.  I teased Alex that it was old – from back when he used to sign his WHOLE name on things.  Apparently this got to him, because wouldn’t you know he signed Lauren’s book with “Alexander”? haha

Next up was Andy who spotted I was wearing my I <3 Hanson tshirt.  He asked me if the concerts had happened already and I said yeah, they were Monday through Friday and he asked me how they were.  I told him great and that the new album would be amazing and he said something about how I would be on the movie screaming at the top of my lungs. LOL  How he knew so much without me having said anything, I don't know.  Pretty sure he's secretly on Hanson.net 😉  Mike and I exchanged hellos and I was ushered back through and waited for Lauren to make her way through the line. We went back to the car and it said it was 102°! CRAZY!  It probably wasn’t that hot outside, but since the car was roasting in the parking spot its temperature rose.  While in line we debated taking the T in or driving straight in to Boston.  I had always taken the T in the past, but since we didn’t have much time we decided to just drive straight in to Boston (eek!) We made it to the HOB about 4pm. More details on that later!

Honor Society – Nokia Theatre 4/24/10

Last night was Honor Society’s “hometown” show of their Here Comes Trouble Tour.  Lauren, Christine and I took the 1:05 train into the city and made it to Times Square a little after 3pm.

I had won tickets, so we went to see if we were there but they had told me they wouldn’t have the list until 4:30.  We said hello to some friends and then found a spot in line.  We weren’t sure how we would find out about Soundcheck or Meet & Greet, but eventually a Nokia staff member came by and told us where to go.  My name was on the list for just 1 wristband but we had no problem getting Christine in with me.

We were let in to the venue and picked a spot at the rail in the second section of the Nokia.  They started by singing See U In The Dark, they also sang When I Come Home and Where Are You Now and answered a few fan submitted questions.  They also mentioned HANSON and that they had last been at Nokia when they won a contest to open for them.  I was glad they finally mentioned what band it was and Christine and I screamed for Hanson 😉

After they were done we all had to get lined up for the M&G;, it was incredibly rushed because they had a ton of people to go through, we didn’t have time to say much more than hi to each other.  But Andy told me he would see me later LOL

We went back outside to see about our tickets, but the guest list was still missing. Once it arrived my name was not on the list and we had some communication problems when Honor Society’s manager said there was nothing he could do, so we bought tickets, only to get 2 from HS’s assistant shortly after.  To make up for the mixup she got us merchandise M&G; wristbands to meet the guys after the show.

Christine and I had to get back in line, at this point Lauren was already inside and told us she was trying to win VIP tickets.  We met up with her and spent a really long time trying to win.  You were allowed to use every email address you had, so Christine had one of the girls who were typing in names while Ashley, Lauren and I had another, and the 3rd was working with other people.  Finally, Christine ended up winning with one of her email addresses. But we figured we would win, eventually, since we had pretty much monopolized the girls who were plugging in our information. We got 4 VIP passes and were able to go up to the VIP Balcony area, where there were seats! Yay!

By the time we got in, Ashlyne Huff was already about half way through her set.  Her single “Heart of Gold” was actually on the radio in a commercial a couple weeks ago and I had been trying to google the lyrics but couldn’t find anything.  Of course, I figured it out once she sang it! I am looking forward to her cd coming out on May 11!

Freestyle Steve, Timbaland’s DJ, was spinning in between sets – but it was a lot of rap/hiphop/whatever and that’s not really my thing.  It seemed to keep the girls in the crowd entertained and it did kind of seem to make the time go faster but I would have preferred to have been listening to something else.

Just Kait was out next and I sat against the back wall to keep my energy for when Honor Society would hit the stage.

The set lists were taped down and I took a picture of Jason’s with my super zoom and I was exciting Can’t Box Me In was on the list, but was pretty shocked that Rock With You and See U In The Dark were missing.  When they came out playing Rock With You we were confused.  Apparently the leg of Jason’s keyboard had cut off the first two songs!  I always hate taking pics of the set list in the beginning, because it ruins the surprise, but there was still a surprise! (Usually I take the setlist pic whenever I get the option though because you never know what might happen to it throughout the show lol)

I couldn’t see Alex for almost the whole show, because there was a curtain blocking the back of the stage from our view at the far corner of the balcony.  He came out to sing “Down” and “When I Get Home” so I made it my mission to get a couple good pictures of him – and I ended up with only a couple – the boy looked down for pretty much the entire song!

They brought out Ashlyne and Kait for Don’t Close The Book.  I was bummed I couldn’t see Alex during his solo on Nobody Has To Know (my favorite honor society song).  They closed out the night with Over You and Full Moon Crazy and just looking out in to the crowd to see how big it was compared to my first show at the knitting factory was amazing.  The venue held 2000+, and while it wasn’t sold out, it had to have been pretty close!

A highlight of the night was when Christine went to talk to Johnny Wright and got a bunch of NSYNC gossip from him!  We were all a little bit too excited over that haha.

Honor Society School of Rock 1/21/10

Yesterday we got on the road a little bit later than originally intended, but made it to NJ with time to spare. We stopped at the neighborhood McDonalds for a pit stop before driving back over to the School of Rock NJ.

We had already decided that we weren’t going to bother trying to get a “good” spot, we were going to hang in the back. (in November we tried to hang in the crowd but ended up in the back by the end of the night, so we figured we might as well start there this time)

Since we had a while to wait before Honor Society, we decided to sit on the floor to rest our legs. I decided to stay on the ground for most of the opening act, Just Kait’s set. While she was performing, Honor Society came in through a garage door and was watching Kait’s set. Mike was looking around and I saw his eyes go to the ground and he spotted me and gave me a big grin. I smiled right back.

This Honor Society show was going to be special. They had mentioned there would be a BIG ANNOUNCEMENT, at least *2* new songs and some oldies as well. (The whole ride down Lauren and I were reminiscing about 2008 and listening to our old recordings to brush up on lyrics haha)

Finally, they hit the stage. They were broadcasting live, so our friend Christine was giving us a play by play of their chat and told us when they were on their way to us lol

The show was acoustic – and a special treat. We got throwbacks of No Win Situation, Heartache in the Suburbs (which I hadn’t seen performed before), The Takeover and of course our favorite – This Bed Is An Ocean – during which Mike said “I see you in the back” directed at Lauren and I. hahaha. (He was looking at us a lot and I think it was thanks to him spotting me on the floor earlier in the evening)

There were 2 new songs – Great Expectations previously sung only at soundchecks (which we had never had the privilege of attending) and When I Come Home which was so new it was not even finished yet.

The big announcement was that their next tour is going to be the HERE COMES TROUBLE TOUR. They also played that song as an encore and I don’t think I have ever seen them leave the stage and come back for an encore before.

We hung around for the M&G; line to get shorter (they did a FREE M&G; for everyone in attendance) and then went through the line. I noticed that Andy was wearing a necklace from the website that he had mentioned to Lauren and I at the Today show so I talked to him about it and said that I thought it was the one from the site when I spotted it during the show and he said I had a “good eye”. Next up was Alex, and I asked if he would put my name on the autograph and of course he did. (1 down, 3 to go haha) Then I told him that it was my cousin Britt’s 16th birthday the day before and so we took her to the show. Mike overheard and said happy birthday. I didn’t really say much to Mike or Jason – I think we were all just to exhausted to think of words for each other by that point. haha.

Overall, I think that was one of the BEST Honor Society shows I have gone to – and trust me, I have gone to a lot hahaha.

Setlist under the cut… pics and possibly videos to come sometime this weekend. (I feel like I am going to nap as soon as I get home and not bother with uploading pics, but we’ll see!)
