Book Review: Tilt Your Head, Rosie the Red

tiltRosie likes to wear a red cape everywhere.  She hangs it on her bedpost at night and puts it back on as soon as she wakes up in the morning.  Her Mom tells her that she won’t be able to wear it at school, so Rosie says she will just wear it TO school and take it off once she gets there.  She likes to listen for all the sounds on her way to school, bikes and crossing guards whistles.  But when she gets to school she hears laughing that she doesn’t like.  Her classmates of Fadimata, another girl at school, surrounded on the swings because she wears a hijab. Rosie takes Fadimata’s hand and they walk in to class where she tells the teacher what happens.  Then Rosie tilts her head and has an idea – she will wear her cape as a hijab!   When she gets to school the next day, there is once again a circle of kids around the swing.  But when she gets closer she realizes that all of the girls are wearing scarves on their heads.  If you look at things in a new way, with a tilt of the head, anything is possible!

About the Book

Arriving at school, Rosie is dismayed to see the kids on the playground taunting her classmate Fadimata, who is Muslim and wears a headscarf. Rosie comes up with a plan. Rosie has a red cape she likes to wear, so she asks Fadimata if she would turn the cape into a headscarf for her. The other kids in their class don’t want to be left out, so they ask Fadimata to make them headscarves as well. The experience confirms Rosie’s belief that if you tilt your head and look at things differently, you can see the world through someone else’s eyes.

Book Review: Reptile Flu

reptileThe class has been learning about reptiles and have been assigned to draw their favorites by their teacher. Kamal doesn’t like reptiles so he doesn’t really want to draw any, but ends up drawing a small gecko.  Then the teacher, Ms. Crosby, surprises the class and lets them know that they will be taking a trip to the museum to see the reptile show!  Everyone is excited, except Kamal.   He wants to tell the teacher he is afraid and doesn’t want to go on the trip, but can’t seem to do it. He spends the night having nightmares.  He thinks if he hides the form from his Mom, he can’t go on the trip, but his Mom finds it.  Kamal tells his Mom the trip is too expensive so he will stay home, but his Mom insists he should go on the trip and make memories.   Finally, Kamal dropped his boots and told everyone he was afraid.  Ms. Crosby tells him that if she stays with him as his partner, will he still go on the trip? Because she is afraid of geckos and needs someone brave with her.  Kamal says that she should have told him before!  Then on the bus, all the kids in his class told each other what they were afraid of.  Then, while at the reptile show, Kamal volunteered to hold a baby alligator!

This is a great book about communication and teaching kids to talk about their fears.  Maybe they will then realize that they are not the only one afraid of things and can then be brave and try to over come them!

Hanson T-Shirts

For Hanson Day in May I decided to make a couple of custom Hanson T-shirts for the weekend.  I am getting into using heat transfer vinyl (and hoping that I will get a heat press for Christmas so I can stop using the iron – which works well but not as great as a press would) and I also decided to make a rhinestone Hanson symbol.  A lot of people stopped me and asked where I got the shirt so it was always nice to say, “I made it!”

The vinyl shirt was blue glitter and symbols to mean “eat, sleep, hanson” Although we teased for Hanson Day Weekend I should put Red Xs through the first two because there’s so much Hanson going on there is not a lot of time for eating and sleeping!  I’m sure these shirts will be making an appearance on the fall tour at some point – although when I went to photograph them I did notice that some of the vinyl and rhinestones are coming loose so they will have to be fixed up a bit first!

The rhinestone shirt was silver rhinestones on a red shirt.  This one was tough to make, it took a long time to set all the rhinestones in place, but I am super happy with how it came out.  I am going to try to make another rhinestone shirt soon – probably the Mets NY… so stay tuned to see how that comes out 🙂

EDIT I managed to fix the popped up vinyl and rhinstone using my hair straightener! It’s probably not enough of a heat press to do an entire shirt but it definitely worked in a pinch!

Try It Tuesday: Hanson Earrings

I’ve been having fun making all sorts of fun Hanson items with my Silhouette Cameo lately. (And all sorts of other things too)  But one thing I made before Hanson weekend in May was a pair of Hanson earrings (and a second pair to give away on hansonstage)

I bought blank flat earrings, measured out the diameter of the circle and then made 2 Hanson symbols small enough to fit on the earring.  This was actually a lot easier than I was expecting and I was totally happy with how they came out!

Unfortunately I was unable to wear them in Tulsa because I hadn’t worn earrings in a while and my holes had closed up a bit and I wasn’t willing to fight to get the earrings to fit.  But there will be more Hanson days to come that I will get a chance to wear them!

Hanson also ended up releasing silver symbol earrings for sale shortly after I made these. I’ll pretend they got the idea from me 😉

I’ve posted on here before how much I absolutely love Matt Nathanson’s song Headphones.  The first time I heard it, it was like it was written for me.  So I was happy to find out that it was included on his latest release, Show Me Your Fangs.  I don’t really have any other of Matt’s releases, but I do love his music and his live shows (so I’m bummed his tour promoting this didn’t work out for me!) It’s hard to pick favorites from these songs. They’re all so different, but all so great! Obviously excluding Headphone which is clearly my favorite of the 10, it’s hard to rank the rest. Let’s just say the other 9 all come in at #2.  Definitely a quality release and you should check it out!

Product Review: Silicone Shaped Ice Trays

I am always looking for fun party ideas and these silicone ice trays are certainly something that will start a conversation!  I received a set of 3 trays, a guitar mold that makes 10 guitars, a lego robot mold that makes 8 robots and a lego block mold that makes 10 legos.  In addition to using these to make ice, you can always use them to make chocolate, other candy, crayons or jello.

Our first attempt was to make some guitar shaped ice.  Once the tray was filled with water, it became a bit flimsy so it was difficult to transfer it from the sink to the freezer.  It works best if you have something underneath it for more support before transferring it into the freezer.  Once frozen, the ice came out of the tray without an issue.

Our second attempt was jello.  We used a cookie sheet underneath the trays for stability.  After leaving them in the fridge overnight, they did not become solid like the jello we put in a different container did.  We switched to a cookie cooling rack underneath them.  That didn’t work either. So we popped them in the freezer.  Then we ended up with some gooey grossness.  Bummer, because I wanted some fun jello jigglers but for whatever reason we just could not get it to work.  (I’d post pictures of the frozen ones but I don’t think you want to see that!)

Book Review: 25 Questions You’re Afraid to Ask About Love, Sex and Intimacy

25Q25 Questions You’re Afraid to Ask About Love, Sex and Intimacy is about, well, 25 questions.  It is written to be read either straight through and reading all the questions or so that you can just skip around to the questions you actually have.  It is written towards women but the questions are not segregated by if you are single or married.  The author of the book is often refered to as the “Christian Dr Ruth” and while she may not like that nickname – keep that in mind when you are reading if you are not Christian as the advice given may not be exactly what you are looking for.

The author does talk a bit about how talking about cohabitation, erotica, masturbation and homosexuality may ruffle some feathers. The author takes a moral stand within the perspectives offered because she believes God designed sexuality and He knows a lot more about it than anyone else.

Each of the 25 questions is a chapter in this book, and it clocks in at just over 200 pages. Read it the whole way through or just pick and choose what topics you are interested in, I think you’ll learn something or at least gain a new perspective.

About this Book

Whether you are married or single, having great sex or no sex, your sexuality is inseparable from your spirituality.

Many Christian women are confused and even devastated by the area of sexuality. In the silence of the church, they are left to sort through harrowing experiences like sexual abuse, exposure to porn, raging temptation, homosexual thoughts, and betrayal in marriage-all on their own.

Having nowhere to go to ask the hard questions about sexuality can be spiritually dangerous. Women need the truth.

In 25 Questions You’re Afraid to Ask About Love, Sex, and Intimacy, Dr. Juli Slattery addresses some of the most common questions women have on sexuality from a biblical perspective, such as:

What if I don’t like sex?If I’m single, how far is too far?Is ______ok in the bedroom? How do I get past my shame? What if I want sex more than my husband does?

These are the type of questions that thousands of women have been asking Dr. Slattery. She answers them with rare candor, grace, and wisdom.

We desperately need God’s perspective on sexuality. And fortunately, the Bible has a lot to say on the topic. Some of it might surprise you.
