Book Review: Shining Star

shiningstarShining Star – Braving the Elements of Earth, Wind & Fire is a memoir from the lead singer of the group – Philip Bailey. The book tells about his life and how he has always been interested in music since a very young age.  Then he found out that he could get paid for playing music!

This give a behind the scenes look to sex, drugs, rock n roll , payola, etc. into the music industry around the time that EWF was coming up.  Certainly an interesting story and I always like to hear all the behind the scenes things going on. Especially with a group that often switched out some of the members.

I dare you to read this book and not end up with “Shining Star” stuck in your head for the rest of the day. (or week!)

About the Book

A revealing and heartfelt memoir from the lead singer of the legendary Earth, Wind &FireWith more than ninety million records sold and eight Grammy awards throughout its forty-year history, Earth, Wind & Fire has staked its claim as one of the most successful, influential, and beloved acts in music history. Now, for the first time, its dynamic lead singer Philip Bailey chronicles the group’s meteoric rise to stardom and his own professional and spiritual journey.Never before had a musical act crossed multiple styles and genres with a quixotic blend of astrology, Universalism, and Egyptology as Earth, Wind & Fire (EWF) did when it exploded into the public’s conscience during the 1970s. The group’s shows became sensory experiences with their dramatic staging, shimmering costumes, elaborate choreography, baffling magic tricks and a thumpingbackbeat. At the center of it the group was its charismatic founder Maurice White and Bailey, with his soaring multi-octave range and distinctive falsetto. After being signed by recording titan Clive Davis,EWF went on to produce a remarkable series of platinum and gold albums and headline stadiums around the world. As Philip and Maurice were profoundly influenced by genius producer CharlesStepney, as well as famed arranger David Foster,EWF elevated Sly Stone’s multiethnic “I Wanna Take You Higher” message to an even higher level.Bailey hit the wall due to fame, fortune, and the excesses of global success. The constant touring and performing took its toll on him publicly and privately. While White and Bailey’s relentless work ethic shot the band into the stratosphere, it also exhausted and emotionally gutted the group. In 1983, White abruptly dismantled the band, leaving Bailey and the rest of the members to fend for themselves. As a solo act, Bailey recorded “Easy Lover,” a worldwide smash duet with Phil Collins, launching the next stage of his career until EWF reunited later that decade.

Shining Star is the true story of what happens when real life exceeds your dreams, when the power and pain of building a legacy brings both joy and faith-testing challenges.

Where Are They Now:

Book Review: The Princess Within for Teens: Discovering Your Royal Inheritance

teensThe Princess Within for Teens is a book for teens in helping them find their inner princess. The book starts with a quiz  to see which Disney Princess you are most like. (I’m half Merida and half Cinderella – I guess it makes sense!) and then goes on to teach girls how they should act that will help them find their inner princess.  The book focuses a lot on issues that teens have to deal with and some ways to help cope.  Chapters have quizzes to find out more about yourself, which I always like and there is also an area so that the girls who read it can write some notes to themselves based on what they learned in each chapter.

This is a Christian book so of course it talks about the bible and how it relates to some of the topics as well.  It was written by Serita Ann Jakes who has been involved with ministry all her life.

I liked this book, it is a quick read and a great reference for teens who may be struggling with finding themselves. The quizzes and passages certainly make you think and it also has some stories from other girls which help make you realize that you are not alone!

I received a free copy of this book from Bethany House. I was not otherwise compensated. All thoughts and opinions are mine.

About the Book

It’s time to get ready for the ball.

Girls of all ages want to feel like Cinderella at the ball. But maybe you feel more like Cinderella before the ball–overlooked, inadequate, hurting, maybe even used and abused. Sometimes it’s hard to feel beautiful, in God’s eyes or your own, when something or someone has robbed you of your inner beauty.

Serita Ann Jakes understands those feelings. She knows how past failures and present hurts can prevent you from realizing your true identity in Jesus Christ. She has helped hundreds of girls work through personal struggles, and now she wants to help you. Whether you’re struggling with poor self-esteem, difficult friendships, family problems, secret shame, or something else, above all, she wants you to know,

You are a princess–a daughter of the King!

Serita Ann’s insights and encouragement will give you the courage and strength to shed your tattered rags and find your inner princess–and to walk in confidence as a young woman who knows her true beauty comes from a Christ-honoring life.

Justin Timberlake 20/20 Experience

Friday night Justin Timberlake came to the Mohegan Sun Arena for the summer leg of his tour. This show was particularly exciting for me because it was my 400th concert and it was also the day before my 30th birthday!  When I arrived my friend informed me that Chris Kirkpatrick has been on the tour and that we should keep an eye out for him. We ended up going in as soon as doors opened so she could grab a nice spot in VIP (and she did!) and I could get settled in to my seat.  Then I got a text that she overheard that Joey Fatone was in attendance too!

A little before 7 (the show was listed at 7:30 on the tickets) Freestyle Steve the DJ came out to “entertain” us. I don’t get the point of having a DJ before the show and I don’t get the point of the DJ playing a bunch of Justin songs before Justin is going to sing them all for us in that same room.  (Granted, the ones he played weren’t in the setlist – but STILL!) Then I got a text from my friend that she spotted Joey in VIP in front of her.  I missed him walking over there, but he ended up leaving after being spotted and I was able to see him leave and then come back later before the show started.  There was still no sign of Chris though.

Justin took the stage at about 8:30.  The beginning of his set was very dark (as in, no lighting to get a picture) and while it did get better at some points the overall lighting situation wasn’t all that great. Oh well. I did get a couple of funny faced pictures so I guess that’s good enough.  The show was really high energy and I thought it was a good mix of songs – especially since the only ones I really know are his singles and even moreso his earlier solo stuff. There weren’t too many songs that I was having trouble singing along to. And he tossed in a few covers too.

About an hour in, there was an intermission… and then the show continued!  A few songs in, the stage ended up rising up and he started moving all over our heads. So awesome.  The stage actually ended where it was directly over my head and I was able to get a picture of his feet over top of me.  Then some stairs lifted from the middle of the VIP section and he came down to the B stage.  Although I found it odd that he had his back to the VIP area for the whole set (aside from when he walked around a bit when he “landed”) and didn’t face the back of the crowd instead. *shrugs*

It was around this point when I spotted Chris in the back with his wife and I *may* have taken more creepy stalker photos of Chris than I did of Justin even though he was right in front of me practically. (Have I mentioned Justin is my least fave NSYNC member? lol Plus, I knew I’d be seeing Justin again in December but didn’t know for sure I’d ever be in the same room as Chris again – or 3/5 of NSYNC for that matter!)  I also spent a lot of time staring at the stage and trying to figure out how it worked.  I also thought Justin was pretty brave because there were no rails on the stage and him and some of the band were on it as it moved. I’d be terrified.

As the stage moved back to the front, Justin was miming something to Chris, but I couldn’t quite make out what he was implying.  Chris seemed to know though, because he was laughing at him.  The show ended at just about 11. (Or at least that’s about what time it was when we made it outside)

I had heard a rumor that if you put your card in the machine on your birthday, it pops up and says “Happy Birthday” so I wanted to see for sure. At first I debated waiting the hour for it to hit midnight, but then ultimately decided to stay (after having to get a new card since mine seemed to have fallen out of my pocket during the show)

While we were killing time, we went to look for the Michael Jackson machine and who should we find? JOEY! We were able to get pics with him and I told him it was my birthday tomorrow so he said Happy Birthday 🙂 I felt bad interrupting him when he was with family, but he was super nice!

And it turns out that the slot machines DO tell you Happy Birthday if you visit on your birthday! (Too bad there weren’t any of the birthday perks I wanted to use at midnight lol)

Overall a great way to celebrate my 30th and 400th show!

Try It Tuesday: Flip Flop Flowers

When I was in Jamaica in 2013, I saw some cool art on the walls in the airport made out of flip flops. (It was outside a shoe store) I thought that I could make them myself out of stickers for my scrapbook – and while I forgot about this until after my Jamaica pages were done, I will have to go back and see if I can stick them in on a few pages before they get put into an album.  They didn’t come out quite as nice as I would have liked, but they’re still pretty cool nonetheless.

Music Monday: Hanson Snowed In

While the other reviews for this month are more recent Christmas releases – this is what I have to consider a “classic” release – Hanson’s Christmas CD released “waaay” back in 1998.

snowedin

Merry Christmas Baby
What Christmas Means to Me
Little Saint Nick
At Christmas
Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)
Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree
Christmas Time
Everybody Knows the Claus
Run Rudolph Run
Silent Night Medley
Silent Night

Snowed In is a classic for me.  In fact, a few years back a few friends and I decided to make it a tradition to listen to it at midnight after Halloween.  (It helped that at the time we were leaving a Hanson Halloween concert in Oklahoma and figured it would be appropriate to listen to on the way home)  To me, this album and the songs will never get old – even if Hanson’s voices have changed and it can be a bit painful to listen to at times. (Sorry Zac.)  The CD has 3 original songs – At Christmas, Christmas Time and Everybody Knows the Claus. And while every year I hold out that they will release a new Christmas CD (they’ve released a couple Christmas songs over the past few years and are doing a Christmas streaming special this year so we may be getting another track or two, I hope) I don’t think that Snowed In will never make its way out of rotation.  (And don’t tell my iPod but I also get a kick out of it when it’s the middle of summer and it plays like 3 or 4 tracks from this CD in a row when I’m heading home from a road trip!)

Product review: WP Auto Affiliate Links Review + Giveaway

box

I’m always interested in trying to find new ways to monetize my blog.  I have decided to become an Amazon Affiliate because I love Amazon and who doesn’t? But I have been having problems generating sales through the blog.  I have tried to add the widget for some book reviews and I also have the search widget on the sidebar.  But it still hasn’t been generating anything.

So for the past couple of weeks I have been using the plugin Wp Auto Affiliate Links.  Wp Auto Affiliate Links is a wordpress plugin that will automatically add affiliate links into your content. It can work with links that you add manually or you upload trough a data feed, but it can also extract and display links from Amazon and Clickbank.

Successful bloggers are getting most of their income by promoting affiliate products. However, this is not easy because you have to post and maintain all your affiliate links. What if you had to insert affiliate links in 500 posts, or 1000? That will take an enormous amount of time. What if one of the products you placed links for changed affiliate network and you have to change all the links ? Dealing with affiliate links on a high content blog may take all your free time so you are going nowhere.

While I like that it does all the work for me – it does post some random links that have no relevance what so ever to my post. I also don’t like that in my product reviews it posts links to completely different product within the posts.  I have not found a way for it to only post affiliate links into certain blog posts.

If you have more broad topics on your blog, this may be the way to go for you. But for me, it just doesn’t seem to be working out.  You can make the links automatically no follow and choose the amount of links you wish to have in each post (ranging from Very Low to Very High) and if you’d like the links to open in new windows or not.

If you’d like to try out WP Auto Affiliate Links for yourself – ONE lucky reader will win a code for PRO.  Just visit http://autoaffiliatelinks.com/ and leave a comment with something you’ve learned as a comment.  Make sure your email address is included so you can be contacted if you win.  Contest closes 7/21/14 11:59pm EST. Winner will have 48 hours to respond to winning prize or an alternate winner will be chosen.

Book Review: Strange Beautiful Music

strangeStrange Beautiful Music is a memoir by Joe Satriani. The book tells about his life growing up, how he got his first guitar and what got him interested in being a musician. Throughout the book there are also some in sets with information from others who were around at that time giving their take on what happened, which I thought helped round things out a bit.  The rest of the book is a bit too detailed and while interesting was almost a bit MORE than I wanted to know or expected to find out when I picked up the book.  If you’re a fan of Joe’s, then maybe you will appreciate this detail more than I did.

The end of the book also has a section called “The Gear: Album by Album”, if you’re really into music and gear then this is the chapter for you – lots and lots of detail on everything that was used for every album and EP that Joe released.

I received a free e-copy of this book in order to write this review. I was not otherwise compensated.
