Book Review: Love Heals All

LoveHealsAllI have to preface this by saying I am well aware that I am not the demographic that this book is going for.  But I was curious when I saw this book was “featuring” Hayes Grier, who I believe is a Vine star.  I’m not much of a vine user and I don’t really “get” these kids that are famous for just making videos on Vine and Youtube (read: I’m too old) but either way the book sounded somewhat interesting so I gave it a go.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t get past 25% of the book.  I did try, several times, to continue it – but my rule is to not waste time forcing myself to get into books so right around the time when our main character decided that she was “handicapped” and wanted to kill herself seemed like a great time for me to bow out – since I am permanently handicapped and this girl just fell off a trampoline…

The book was a bit of a throw back for me too – it reminded me of the fanfic that my friends and I used to write when we were 14, 15 years old.  The only difference is we didn’t try to get published and I’m not sure anyone would have published it anyway.  But you always had a boyband – say NSYNC – which had 5 guys and you’d be the main character and then you’d write in ALL your friends so they could be dating a band member.  Had more than 5 friends? Oh hey, maybe LFO or Backstreet Boys showed up too.  This book definitely had that going on – and on top of it all – it jumped from ones person’s point of view to another and each time they had their first chapter they’d start it off with a “Hi, I’m soandso and I look like this and blahblahblah” instead of having it written from one point of view and some character development.  I typically don’t mind books that jump between two points of view – but this one was just out of hand.

I have to hand it to the author for getting out there and writing and getting published but this book just completely missed the mark for old me.

Book Review: Dead Girls Society

deadgirlsEvery now and then I need to take a step away from the romance novels and dive into a YA or Children’s Fiction book.  Dead Girls Society was that book for me recently and it did not disappoint.  Even though I keep saying that I should not judge a book by its cover, I was intrigued by the wax seal on the front cover as that is my latest craft obsession that I am trying to figure out how to work into my scrapbook pages.  Fortunately for me, I did not end up with a bad book with a good cover – but rather a great book with a good cover.

The book is a little bit reminiscent of Pretty Little Liars, which is one of my favorite TV shows.  Hope has been stuck at home with an illness (CF) and is being babied by her Mom and her best friend, Ethan (who she maybe kinda sorta might have a crush on).  She is living in New Orleans and is bored with that, too.  Then an invitation arrives from “The Society” inviting her to come and play a game in which she could win quite a sum of money.  Enough money so that her Mom won’t have to worry about their piling medical debt for a while.

She sneaks out of the house and meets up with several other girls and they have to do dangerous tasks in order to win.  After a couple of tasks, the society seems to think that Hope is cheating so more bad things happen to her to teach her a lesson.  When things start going bad and it seems she has no way out, Hope tries to figure out who it is behind The Society.  Is she on the right track? Can she stop whoever it is before she is in too deep?

About the Book
A slick thriller from the author of HEXED, perfect for fans of THE CELLAR by Natasha Preston and PANIC by Lauren Oliver.

You are cordially invited to participate in a game of thrills and dares. Tell no one, and come alone. If you dare.

Hope is sick of everyone treating her like she’s breakable. Sure, she has cystic fibrosis (basically really bad lungs), but she’s tired of being babied by her mom and her overprotective best friend, Ethan, not to mention worrying about paying for her expensive medication and how she’s going to afford college. And she’s bored with life in her run-down New Orleans suburb.

When an invitation arrives from a mysterious group that calls itself the Society, Hope jumps at the chance for some excitement. This could be her ticket out. All she has to do is complete a few dares and she just might win some real money.
But the Society isn’t all that it seems . . . and soon Hope finds that playing the game isn’t a choice—it’s a requirement.

Review: Decluttr

decluttr

Recently I was looking to get rid of some books and decided I would try out decluttr, as I had heard it was a pretty good site.  In order to have free shipping to send the items to the site, you had to submit 30 items, so I ended up going through my CDs as well to hit 30.  I ended up getting $13 for all my effort and it was completely not worth it.  If you are in dire need of cash and have a TON of free time to sort through all your things and scan barcodes, it may be worth it.  But for all the hours I put into it, to only end up with $13 (sometimes just $0.05 for a CD) I would have been better off putting in little effort, throwing everything into trash bags and dropping it off at a place like GoodWill.

After packaging everything and sending it in – they ended up not even paying me for one of the CDs because it was a “promotional” CD and unable to resale.  Did they send the CD back to me? Nope. They kept it.  Whether they tossed it since it couldn’t be sold or decided to sell it (or do whatever it is they do with them) instead, I don’t know, but that was pretty annoying.  I guess I should have realized it was a promo CD myself but it wasn’t obviously labeled as one.

In the future I think I will just donate to GoodWill, less effort and a tax write off.

96.5 All Star Christmas 2016

Thursday night TIC’s All Star Christmas moved from The Oakdale Theater (currently booked with the touring production of WICKED) to the Mohegan Sun Arena.  This allowed for them to get some bigger names for the show and the acts were supposed to be Lindsey Stirling, James Bay, One Republic and Meghan Trainor.  However, Thursday morning it was announced that Meghan had been put on vocal rest through the rest of the year and she’d have to cancel all her shows.  (Meghan had previously canceled a tour last year due to vocal issues and underwent surgery.)  TIC announced that refunds would be available if you no longer wanted to attend and that they would be adding Nick Fradiani to the bill.

While I was excited to see Nick over Meghan (I wasn’t all that interested in seeing her to begin with) as far as it being an equal trade off on a bill I paid $90 to see – that’s debatable.  As far as it being someone I’d much rather see, that was awesome.  One Republic got bumped to headliner and I assume they ended up doing a bit longer set than they would have.

Nick opened the show at 7pm and did several tracks off his debut album, Hurricane.  He also did a remixed version’s Meghan’s All About That Bass.  He only knew the chorus so he frestyled the rest about being back home in Connecticut.  He also did a brand new song that he had just written a couple of weeks ago which according to his twitter is called “We Live Forever”

Next up was Lindsey Stirling and boy oh boy did I wish I strapped my step counter to that girl before she hit the stage.  If you’re not familiar with her she plays violin. Which some may find boring but when it is Lindsey, it is not.  She is all around the stage dancing as she plays and is very, very impressive.  She even got a standing ovation once her set was over! I think we were all exhausted from just watching her.

James Bay was the next performer and the one I was most interested in seeing. He was really, really high energy. And has the cutest accent! He called for fans to stand and clap along, although he wanted us to try and clap for a whole song and I just couldn’t do it, though I did try.  (Confession: I was hoping clapping would trigger my step counter so I could finish the race I’ve been working on since June. shhh. It kind of worked.)  He had everyone sing along for “Let It Go” which sounded so awesome!

One Republic seemed to take forever and a day to take the stage after it was set up.  I thought at first maybe they weren’t actually in the building yet (although technically their on stage time would have been earlier if Meghan didn’t cancel so that didn’t really make sense) but Ryan Tedder commented on hearing us all singing “Let It Go” from side stage – so he was there at least for some of James’ set!  The women in front of me got fed up and left saying “This is stupid!” on their way out and when the track played over the speakers stopped for a second and then went into another song, people started yelling “Cmon already!”  Then when they did try to turn out the house lights, they turned them up all the way for a split second instead!

This was my 3rd time seeing One Republic although for the life of me before the show I could only remember seeing them at Mixtape Festival in 2013 with Hanson.  Turns out they were also at one of the Christmas shows back in 2012 when I did 3 back-to-back-to-back.  They are all kind of a blur so I can see how I lost track.

One Republic did a 10 song set and I knew pretty much all of the songs but 1 that was a newer one for a movie? I also didn’t realize that they had been having singles on the radio since 2008 – so it makes sense that there were so many I was familiar with.  I remember when their first song came out and it was Timbaland featuring One Republic but Timbaland was just doing his patented “aaa oo ooo” on the track.

One Republic’s set was also high energy with Ryan jumping on a piano at one point.  Like Nick, he spoke a bit about Meghan and how the vocal issues could lead to permanent damage and he hoped she had a speedy recovery and then had us do a call and response – my name is NO my sign is NO my number is NO…

Something I learned during One Republic’s set was that Ryan has family in the nearby town of Mystic and he used to spend a lot of summers there growing up! He thought he might have had cousins in the audience and girls 2 rows in front of me flipped out so I guess they were cousins or knew of his cousins?

Overall it was a great night although the show did go a bit later than I was hoping, leading me to not get home til 12:30am.  Not usually the case when the show is at the much closer Oakdale Theater.  We’ll have to see what next Christmas has in store, but at least it didn’t snow!

Book Review: Rock With You

rockwithyouCarly Taylor took over her grandmothers bakery in a small town of Haven.  One morning she sees what she thinks to be a rockstar outside the door waiting to come in.  But why would he be in her small town? She was listening to his album as she was baking that morning so maybe her imagination just got the best of her.  But then she realizes that Sam Weiss is really in her bakery.  Later that day he calls and asks for her to make a delivery of some of her sweet treats to him.  An ice storm is about to hit and she thinks that she can make it to his place and back, but the weather comes in earlier than expected and the two end up stranded at his place for a couple of days.  Sam hasn’t been able to write any new songs, which is why he is in Haven, until Carly arrives. Then he can’t seem to do anything but think of lyrics. (ok, that’s not true. He can do a few other things too ;))  Will their couple of nights stranded result in Sam’s next hit song?

This was a short book which are my favorite kinds and any book dedicated to girls who have had a rock star crush can’t be bad!

About the Book

SWEET AS SUGAR. SEXY AS SIN . . .
Carly Taylor is pretty sure she’s dreaming. It’s not possible that Sam Weiss – rock star god and sexy hotness personified – is actually in her bakery. This sort of thing never happens in the too-small town of Haven. Or to her. And being stranded in a secluded mountain cabin with the deliciously decadent Sam during an ice storm? This is definitely not Carly’s real life . . .

Now there’s just the two of them, a roaring fire, lots of food and drink, and a sizzling attraction – one that just might make Carly do the unexpected. For one night, she’ll live the fantasy. For one night, nothing else matters. . . not her struggling business, not her lonely life, not Sam’s bad-boy reputation. But sometimes one night can turn one crazy, beautiful dream into something real.

Music Monday: Simple Plan Christmas Every Day

screen-shot-2016-12-04-at-8-03-18-pm

Simple Plan is one of my favorite bands so I was pretty excited when they said they had come out with a song for Christmas! They have a really cool lyric video that is made to look like an ugly sweater which is just amazing. The song is super cute about having no school or work on Christmas and how great it would be to have Christmas every day and get presents every day! Definitely super catchy and sounds just what you would expect a Simple Plan Christmas track to sound like.
