Idol Top 3

The best part about Idol this week? There’s only one week left and it is O-V-E-R.

This week each girl sang 3 songs – one chosen by Jimmy, one by the judges and one by the producers.

I thought that Angie and Candice would end up the Top 2 because Kree seemed to have lost her touch lately.  Though I’m glad that the finale is Candice and Kree.

News also came out that Randy is leaving the show after this season and that the producers and judges may ALL be getting revamped.  Will that be enough for me to watch it next season? I guess we’ll have to see who the judges are. But I’m leaning towards that I am done with the show.

And OMG why are they making poor Angie sing this song, she is obviously too emotional.

Idol Top 4 – Redux

This week the Top 4 girls sang again, their votes would be added to the votes from the week before, of course, because they want Amber to have an unfair advantage.  I’m not sure why everyone seems to be against this girl, she is great and improving tons but whatever.

The theme was Then and Now.  They started with a #1 Billboard Top 40 hit.  And the judges kept making comments about what huge hits they were!  The better to smack you with, my dear.  Hello, they are #1 songs – the only way to be a #1 song is to BE A BIG HIT.   Candice did Bruno Mars When I was Your Man and I was so, so, happy that she didn’t re work it to be about a girl.  It makes me crazy when they do that and one of the judges (i think?) made a point that people sing along to it on the radio and that is how they sing it. YES!

Then it was time for the standards.  Oh that song is OLD! Why did you do such an old song when we told you to do old songs? Judges? HELLO!? Are you on the same planet as the rest of us?

Harry Connick JR also was the mentor. He thinks he’s pretty funny. I don’t.

The best part of the evening was the end.  No, when they did the group number at the end, not when the show ended 🙂

And then the results show!  I like how they are trying to keep my attention by bringing in cute past Idols that I love.  This week it was David Cook and his new song.  Then we had some Will I Am and our mentor Harry sang.

And, just like I predicted 700 million years ago Amber was going home.  But man, wouldn’t have been great to send home KREE?  I am so. over. her.

Kris Allen at the Wolf’s Den

Saturday night, Kris Allen was set to play the Mohegan Sun’s Wolf Den.  We got there around 6pm and there was quite a line already, so we jumped right in.  I was nervous that we wouldn’t make it in to the Wolf’s Den, but it turned out that we made it in and were the first set of tables around the upper level so we would have had plenty of time to still make it inside.  I think we had a great spot though, very close to the stage, considering.

At 8pm the show started with Jillette Johnson, who has now become the first opener I have ever seen in the Wolf’s Den!  She did about a half an hour set – very similar to the last 2 times I had seen her (once with Kris and once with Honor Society).  At 9pm Kris came out for his set.

Since it is the Out Alive tour, he off course started off the set with Out Alive.  The set was a bit shaken up from the last time I saw him in January – we got 2 new songs one he had done the last couple times I have seen him – it still has no name (so my setlist book is sad) but he has said the working title is “Paul Simon” and he liked to play it to the different crowds to get a reaction.  He did a call and response portion and then teased us because we did back all the crazy stuff he asked of us – but then thanked us for doing so because we didn’t make him look like an idiot.  The other new song was called “Unique” about liking a crazy girl lol and he dedicated it to a couple in the audience.

He didn’t have time to do a request song (and last time he did a song for Newtown so I have now missed out on making a request both times!) but instead did one he thought we would enjoy which was an Everybody Wants To Rule the World / The Way You Make Me Feel mashup.

During one of the songs he kind of went off on a tangent and was singing about how we are all going to win a lot of money tonight, but maybe not and to not take his word for it and that we probably wouldn’t win… and then he stepped away to play just the guitar for a while but was cracking himself up.  When he went back up to the mic to sing more he was still laughing and had to just play until he could calm down again. Too funny.

He also was joined by “not the one and not the only” Kris Allen – who plays the saxophone for a few songs.  He said that when he had a myspace, he would always search for himself but instead found ANOTHER Kris Allen who played sax.  He lives in the area so he finally got to meet him and invited him on stage to play during I think it was Rooftops.  That was pretty neat for there to be TWO Kris Allen’s on stage at once! And Kris was definitely a great sax player as well.

For the encore, he came out by himself and said that Reba (who was performing at the arena Saturday night) was the first concert he went to when he was 7 years old and he wore a silk shirt and cowboy boots and a cowboy hat.  He also told us how a few years ago he got the chance to meet Reba and was trying to figure out what to say to her – and decided he’d tell her that she was his first concert.  Instead, all that came out was “I love you”.  So in honor of us not being at the Reba show and instead seeing him – he did one of her songs.  Or, part of it.  He didn’t seem to remember all the words and stopped after a minute or so to go into an Idol Medley.  The medley was Falling Slowly (I gasped when he started it. LOVE him singing this song!), Heartless and Ain’t No Sunshine.  The band joined him back on stage and then he did Shut That Door to close out the night.

He is just so, so good and I have been spoiled with him seeming to come to Connecticut every few months.  I hope he keeps it up!  He also mentioned that he is ready for his 3rd album so I hope that all gets underway soon as well 🙂

Idol Top 4

Idol Top 4.  I am so done with this season that I didn’t even have my laptop ready for a song by song critique this week.  And I’m writing this now on Thursday the afternoon after I’ve watched so the details may be hazy.  I would give round 1 to Amber.  Round 2, I don’t know.  But I don’t think anyone really wants her [Amber] to win.  For me, Idol is all about growing as a contestant.  While Kree was the early front runner, all her performances have remained consistent.  Good, but she’s kind of flatlined for me.  The other contestants seem to have growth every week.  While there are rumors of no one going home this week because the save wasn’t used (although, don’t they typically double up on eliminations when it is used?) I wouldn’t be surprised if it is Kree.  I want to like Angie, but there is still something about her that I am just not digging.  I can’t quite put my finger on it, still.    Everyone seemed to cheat with One Hit Wonders and did songs that were 1 hit for someone and then were made more popular by other groups.  I don’t know, to me, that’s not a one hit wonder.  If you’re singing it and I can go “Hey, The BeeGees and Destiny’s Child did this song too” then it’s not a One Hit Wonder.  When you sit there going “Oh yeah this song was popular in the year XX and I can’t for the life of me remember who sang it!” That, to me, is a one hit wonder.

Honestly, this season has just been SUCH a mess – get rid of Nicki, get rid of Jimmy.  We don’t need 4 judges and we certainly don’t need 5… And can you put at least ONE cute boy in the competition? Geez.  No wonder why the ratings are falling.  Guys win every season for a reason.  That is who the voters enjoy.  I am not even sure I’ll watch next season.  I said the same about this season but only watched again because of Johnny.  Hopefully he won’t try out again next year so I don’t have to be devastated and then tortured for another year!

Well, my prediction was right – no one went home.  But again – didn’t they ALWAYS do a double elimination the next week? And the one year they decide to add in another week they don’t need it? Fishy.  Candice and Amber were also the bottom 2, which I’m not really thrilled about either.  This weeks votes will be added to next weeks for the final tally.

However, I guess Idol has heard all my “there are no cute boys!” rants and had my boo, Stefano, on to sing his new single Yes To Love <3

Idol Top 5

Did you know – that a girl is going to win this season?  It’s an all girl top 5 thanks to the fact that the Top 10 was absolutely STACKED with stronger female singers and mediocre dudes.  Obviously, this is what production wanted and the fact that they’re  trying to play it off as some shocker, is the shocking part.

Two themes – Songs from the year of your birth and second – divas!

Candice – Straight Up – A nice mix up of the song but seemed safe.

Janelle – When I Call Your Name – Actually a better performance from her than most of hers have been lately.

Kree – She Talks to Angels – This might have been a risk to her but it just seemed boring and safe.

Angie – Ill Stand By You – While I liked the shout out for Boston since she is from MA, it seemed like her talking before starting threw off the whole performance.

Amber – Without You – Nice song choice but she can’t hit the high notes!

Candice – When You Believe – LOVED IT.

Janelle – Dumb Blonde – She has issues with breathing so she shouldn’t have been moving all around.

Kree – Have You Ever Been In Love – Nice performance but im pretty much over her.

Angie – Halo – I see what Mariah meant about her pronouncing words when she sings. There is just something about Angie I don’t like, but I think that she is one of the stronger singers.

Amber – What Are You Doing With The Rest Of Your Life – Great way to end the night

Going home – Janelle.  Please?

And result night was full of surprises!  Candice got a visit from Paula Abdul! (Can she come back immediately and they get rid of Nikki?)  Janelle got a letter from Dolly Parton!  Clay Aiken came home! (home?) and Fantasia screamed some song.

And then, finally, Janelle was the one with the least amount of votes.

The judges did not use the save.

And then there were 4.  Who will it be? Kree, Angie, Candice or Amber?

Idol Top 6

Two themes this week – Bacharach / Davis & Songs the Idol Wish They Had Written.

Angie – Anyone Who Had a Heart – Great performance to start the night with!

Amber – Say a Little Prayer – Another great performance!

Lazaro – Close To You – I think that the band kind of overpowered him a bit on this one. It was hard to hear him – but apparently what I missed, was AWFUL yeesh. Judges on the warpath for him I guess they REALLY don’t think that the 5 girls left can beat him? Cmon now.

Kree – What the World Needs Now – I liked how she started acapella.  Good performance, but she kind of bores me lately.

Janelle – I’ll Never Fall In Love Again –  I still don’t like her. Please go home.  If Simon was there still he’d probably say this was something you’d hear on a cruise ship.

Candice – Don’t Make Me Over – Ugh. She is so good. So good.

Angie – Love Came Down – Another strong performance, but I think I liked the first one better (though I think Im in the minority on that)

Amber – Love on Top – I think she was singing a little bit too high. Not in the right key… hmm. But the judges won’t care, right?

Lazaro – Angels – This is one of my favorite songs so obviously its hard to match up to Robbie, but I thought he did well with it

Kree – Help Me Make It Through The Night – Oh did Kree sing? Sorry, I fell asleep.

Janelle – The Dance – go home. im so done with this season.

Candice – Love Song – Did satan creep in on her song for a second?  Amazing way to end the show though! (But thank goodness it is over. I was getting pretty pissy.)

Bottom 2 – Janelle and Lazaro

Going home – Lazaro (Even though I think it would be HILARIOUS if he hung around longer)

And Lazaro goes home – so it’s official – a girl will win this season.  As if we couldn’t figure that out when they stacked all the girls and put in mediocre guys.  I honestly hope the ratings drop like a rock thanks to this stunt.   The 12 year old girls that watch this show (and I am one at heart) like to look at cute boys.

Idol Top 7

The theme is ROCK – No Ballads! Hooray! (I swear earlier in the week it was CLASSIC rock but since Evanescence is included… not sure they’re really a classic)  Another week of half-assed write ups because I am just not feeling this season and my thoughts are always completely different from the judges – I think we’re on a different planet quite often this season.  I think that the girls don’t sound in sync and Randy says they sounded like a group right after.  Say what?

The past 2 weeks everyone has gotten confused in the beginning – kind of strange.

Burnell – You Give Love a Bad Name – No hand movements and a fun performance! I love no ballads week!

Angie & Lazaro – Crazy Little Thing Called Love – Did Lazaro flub on the words – AGAIN?  Other than that it was a nice performance.

Kree – Piece of My Heart – AMAZING! perfect song choice!!

Candice & Burnell – The Letter – Pretty good performance

Janelle – You May Be Right – Wow. That was beyond bad. You can’t make Billy Joel COUNTRY!

Lazaro – We Are The Champions – Not the best but a decent performance from him

Amber, Janelle, Kree – Still Rock N Roll To Me – WHY COUNTRY WHY

Candice – Satisfaction – awesome

Amber – What About Love – Strong performance!

Angie – Bring Me To Life – Great way to end the show

Bottom 3 – Janelle, Burnell, Lazaro
Going home – Lazaro

Results show – Casey James and Carrie Underwood! Woo hoo!

Lazaro in the TOP THREE! Holy cow.

The bottom 3 is Amber, Janelle and Burnell

and Amber is safe!

Janelle and Burnell are the bottom 2.

Burnell sings for his life

The judges decide to not use the safe and Lazaro is the last man standing!

I probably would have used the save on him.

Idol Top 8

It’s Motor City week in the land of Idol… and they’re doing duets.  I’m writing this after watching at 1am after seeing a P!NK show that was absolutely amazing – so if I think everyone sucks and my write up seems half assed – well, now you know why.  I won’t be talking about the duets because we’re skipping them (and I’ll catch up to them at some point)

Candice –  Heard It Through The Grapevine – I don’t like her singing this song.

Lazaro – For Once In My Life – Yay! Lazaro is back!

Janelle – You Keep Me Hanging On – Nice to see someone w/ a guitar but I still don’t like her

Devin – Tracks of My Tears – Wasn’t too bad, but I think America is out to get him either way

Burnell – My Cherie Amor – I liked this performance. Great song choice

Angie – Shop Around – Probably my least favorite performance from her yet

Amber – Lately – Decent performance

Kree – Don’t Play That Song – Another great performance from Kree. Go figure. 😉

Bottom 3 – this is tough.  I think Devin will be the one to go home so I’d say Devin, Amber, Burnell

We were treated to two of my favorites… Katharine McPhee and Colton Dixon! Boy oh Boy!

And all the boys are in the bottom 3! I betcha the producers are happy with that!

Burnell is safe.

And Devin has to sing for the save!

The judges are not unanimous and BYE BYE DEVIN.

American Idol Top 9

This week the Top 9 Idols will take on the songs of The Beatles.  But first we need to find out who is going on the tour! And it is – Aubrey! Hooray! No more Charlie! Throughout the night we found out what song was Keith’s favorite Beatle song – in fact, he seems to have at least 4 Beatles songs in his top 2!

Kree – With a Little Help From My Friends – Great performance to kick off the night.

Burnell – Let It Be – Kind of shocked that he didn’t know this song! But he got it all figured out and another great performance.

Amber – She’s Leaving Home – I feel like she was pitchy and off key at points, but it was still a pretty good performance.

Lazaro – In My Life – He seemed to start off a little too fast but found his way about midway through. But what the heck do they have him wearing? Yellow jacket and red shoes?

Candice – Come Together – I knew she was going to do this and I knew she would rock it! Awesome!

Paul – Eleanor Rigby – Very boring rendition. Oh – wait – now we get an Adam Lambert scream.  No thanks.

Angie – Yesterday – A little too big at moments, but still a pretty good performance

Devin – The Long and Winding Road – Probably a perfect song for him.

Janelle – I Will – I find it funny that Paul didn’t want to make the song sound country – but Janelle didn’t seem to have a problem with it. I do though. Gross.

Picking the bottom 3 is so hard because I have to put my personal feelings aside and try to think what America is thinking. And sometimes America is nutty.

Bottom 3 – Paul, Devin, Lazaro (as much as it pains me because I l-o-v-e him)

Going home – Paul

Paul gets his own day and then ends up in the bottom 3!

Devin is also in the bottom 3…

Wow. This is making me look like a genius 😉

Oh wait, spoke too soon, Lazaro is safe (YES!)

Kree is moving on to next week

Candice is also safe!

And Angie too. (Surprise surprise with those 3!)

Also safe – Janelle!

Burnell is also safe which leaves Amber in the bottom 3! Wow.

Paul, Devin and Amber are the bottom 3. I don’t think I’d have picked Amber (Janelle would have been my next choice)

Paul will sing for the save! (Right again! Woohoo!)

And Paul does not get saved and he will be leaving the show.

American Idol Top 10

Wednesday night we got to hear performances from the Top 10!  When the judges were announced Nicki wasn’t there – I got excited and thought maybe she left the show but Ryan said that she was stuck in traffic and would be there later. Boo.

This weeks theme is any song from Idol past winners. Not sure I really dig that theme but let’s see how it goes! (I’m always comparing repeat songs to the last time it was performed and often reference WhatNotToSing.com to make sure I am remembering correctly. This is just going to force me to do that no matter how hard I try not to!)

Curtis – I Believe (Fantasia) – It was going to be tough to match up with Fantasia, but he did re-work it a bit… but it still wasn’t all that great of a performance – he had done much, much better in past rounds. (Though when he said he liked Luther, I would have thought he would have gone with a Ruben song!)

Janelle – Gone (Scotty) – The trouble with this theme is that I can’t help but compare to the other Idol’s performance.  This was a big turning point for Scotty if I remember correctly and this performance just didn’t match Scotty’s at all.

And Nicki is back. Oh hooray. :/

Devin – Temporary Home (Carrie) – Probably the best performance of the night (though that’s not saying much) but I didn’t like it.  I am trying so hard not to compare to Carrie but I can’t!  It just seemed like a boring arrangement.

Angie – I Surrender (Kelly) – I didn’t watch Season 1 so I had nothing to compare with this performance.  She did great, but there is just something about her that I don’t like. But certainly one of the best performances and it will probably be one of the best of the night regardless of who goes behind her.

Paul – Amazed (Scotty) – Well, he isn’t over singing like a Broadway star anymore, so that’s good… but it just seemed like it was hurting him to sing that way.  Not a bad performance but hopefully he can find a happy medium between the two.

Candice – I Who Have Nothing (Jordin) – Totally called this one during the commercial break – Jordin did AMAZING with this song. And I think Candice did great too. Maybe not as great as Jordin but damn near close! WOW! WOW! WOW!

Lazaro – Breakaway (Kelly) – There was something off about the performance with his singing and the music – he was going too fast or something, I’m not sure. Not the worst of the night but not his best performance either.

Kree – Crying (Carrie) – Another strong performance from Kree. There’s not much else for me to say lol

Burnell – Flying Without Wings (Ruben) – He seemed to tone down on the hand movements a bit, which was good for me because they are so distracting for me!  I’m not sure I loved this song for him, but it was a decent performance.

Amber – A Moment Like This (Kelly) – I liked how she made the song her own and it was a really great performance. (Though I don’t think it is the best of the night like Nicki did)

My Bottom 3  – Janelle, Paul and Curtis with Curtis going home

Ryan tells us that they will let us know who was the Top 3 but not in which order. (Gotta compete with XFactor?)

The first in our top 3 is Candice with 42% of the vote in SC.

Kree gets the key to the city in TX where she grew up and then finds out that she is in the top 3!

We find out Charlie was the #6 guy and performs for a spot on the Idol Tour (Based on my 4/5 I thought it would have been Nick…)

And the girl is Aubrey – who was who I thought would make it last week.

The last to make the Top 3 is Angie.

4th. Lazaro
5th Amber
6th Janelle
7th Burnell
8th Paul

The bottom 2 are Devin and Curtis (So I was 2/3 on the bottom 3, kind of shocked Devin is there!)

Singing for the save is – Curtis

And they don’t save him and I am 1 for 1 for the season!
