Book Review: Hank Greenberg

Hank Greenberg was a baseball player in the 1930s.  He was also Jewish.  The Hero of Heroes starts out with Hank sitting in the locker room on September 10, 1934.  Rosh Hoshanah.  By tradition, Jews should observe the holiday in prayer and not work or play.  Hank spent the morning at his synagogue and then stood up to leave.  Should he go and play?  He did not play the year before, his rookie year and no one noticed.  This year he was am emerging star and the Tigers were in first place – fighting the Yankees for the pennant.  The Detroit dailies were giving updates on his every move – was he home? At the synagogue  On his way to the ballpark? Everyone knew thanks to the dailies.  Hank didn’t like all the attention, he wanted to be private but the way he was playing and the position his team was in thrust him into the spotlight.  Hank made the difficult decision to decide to play and received hell from his fellow parishioners and rabbis.  But Yom Kippur was just 10 days away.

The story continues on with the struggles Hank faced being Jewish in a time when the Nazis were gaining power across Europe.  Being Jewish was very controversial as Hank was learning.  Hank went on to become a legendary slugger – alongside names like Jimmie Foxx, Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth.

This was quite an interesting book – it almost seemed in some chapters that the baseball was just an after thought and not the main event in the book.  I had heard of Hank before but never really knew too much about him, so this book was an interesting read.  Most interesting I think was that back when Hank played the sportwriters often did not interview the players but instead made up quotes and attributed them to the players! So there are a lot of quotes out there and in biographies that are listed as fact which may not be. John Rosengren seemed to take great care when writing this book and tried to get everything as accurate as he could by talking to some of the players who were still alive and getting interviews from other sources (that weren’t made up) from players who had passed away before he started writing the book.  Definitely not an easy task by any means but I think he did a great job compiling everything.

I received a free e-copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley in order to write this review. I was not otherwise compensated.

About the Book

Baseball in the 1930s was more than a national pastime; it was a cultural touchstone that galvanized communities and gave a struggling country its heroes despite the woes of the Depression. Hank Greenberg, one of the most exciting sluggers in baseball history, gave the people of Detroit a reason to be proud. But America was facing more than economic hardship. With the Nazis gaining power across Europe, political and social tensions were approaching a boiling point. As one of the few Jewish athletes competing nationally, Hank Greenberg became not only an iconic ball player, but also an important and sometimes controversial symbol of Jewish identity and the American immigrant experience. When Hank joined the Detroit Tigers in 1933, they were headed for a dismal fifth-place season finish. The following year, with Hank leading the charge, they were fighting off the Yankees for the pennant. As his star ascended, he found himself cheered wherever he went. But there were other noises also. On and off the field, he met with taunts and anti-Semitic threats. Yet the hardship only drove him on to greater heights, sharing the spotlight with the most legendary sluggers of the day, including Babe Ruth, Jimmie Fox, and Lou Gehrig. Hank Greenberg offers an intimate account of the man’s life on and off the field. It is a portrait of integrity, triumph over adversity, and one of the greatest baseball players to ever grace the field.

American Idol 3 night event

Tuesday night we had the girls, Wednesday night the boys and Thursday night the top 10 as voted by America will be announced!  There is a new way to support your favorites this season – you can cast a vote directly from the American Idol vote! With super vote you can allot your 50 votes however you’d like – split amongst multiple contestants or all for 1!  You can vote all at once which will make things super easy (and also give them RECORD BREAKING vote numbers!)

But first – the girls

Zoanette – Whats Love Got To Do With It – Back to not being too amazed with her. Not sure that was Top 10 material.

Breanna – Flaws and All – Great performance from Breanna, though I didn’t like the song. Don’t agree w/ Nicki at all. Probably not a top performance, but shouldn’t be the bottom either, I don’t think. But we’ll see.

Aubrey – Big Girls Dont Cry – Really great performance. Great song choice.

Janelle – If I Can Dream – Not sure I really liked this performance.

Tenna – Lost – I’m kind of torn on this performance. She sounded good but I couldn’t understand a damn thing she was singing.

Angie – Never Gone – She loses major points for singing a Colton song because I think he is ridiculous – but she did a good job.

Amber – I Believe In You and Me – Never a good idea to take on Whitney but she did pretty good with it.

Kree – Stronger – Kree is pretty good and the judges love her so I think she’ll have no problem making it to the top 10 though im not really sure if I like her or not.

Adriana – Stand Up For Love – I hate to say this, but I agree with Nicki.  She kind of lost herself a bit and I just didn’t feel it.

Candice – Ordinary People – Another great performance from Candice!

These are my picks but it was NOT easy and im probably so wrong… like the judges say there is a good group here and I wouldn’t be surprised if there is some twist related to the Top 10 being more than 10 up the producers sleeves…

Home – Zoanette, Janelle, Adrianna, Tenna, Breanna
Top 10 – Aubrey, Angie, Amber, Kree, Candice

Elijah – Stay – Not impressed. I dont think it was the right song choice.

Cortez – Locked Out Of Heaven – I want to like him but he always seems to be right on the cusp of greatness and misses it.

Charlie – Mama – So, so bad. So bad. Did I mention it was bad?

Nick – Iris – Considering the epic fail of everyone ahead of him so far, this may be enough to get him through but I didnt really dig it.

Burnell – I’m Here – Best of the night so far but his arms are still really distracting.

Paul – Just a Fool – He’s still theatrical but it wasn’t bad. He could make it to the top 10.

Lazaro – Feeling Good – looooooooove him. cant get over just how amazing he sings and the transformation that singing does to him

Curtis – I Believe I Can Fly – Another great performance.

Devin – It’s Impossible – Can’t get over the elimination that got him through so please go home. 😉 (At least he didn’t totally suck because I think then I’d have been more annoyed)

Vincent  – End Of The Road – I wasn’t entirely blown away but it but it wasn’t bad either

My picks… I tried to be objective.

Home –  Cortez, Elijah, Charlie, Paul, Vincent
Top 10 –  Nick, Burnell, Lazaro, Curtis, Devin

And now we find out who america voted as the top 10 in a SUPERSIZED episode of American Idol!

5 guys and 5 girls will make it to the Top 10.  And right now no one knows who is going through except Ryan.

1st to top 10 – Paul

2nd through- Burnell

3rd through – Curtis

4th through – Devin

And the last of the guys – Lazaro!

Which puts me at 4/5 for the guys!

And now for the girls…

1st in the top 10 – Janelle

2nd – Candice

3rd – Angie

4th – Amber

5th – Kree!

And 4/5 for the girls.  Hmm. Seem to have been stuck at that number through almost all the rounds!

Idol Thoughts: Vegas Part II

Sudden death part 2 is here! I am still not sure I’ll continue watching past this – but I want to see what happens to some of the others and maybe I’ll develop a new favorite… (Although I already have dates blocked out for my posts about the show and I’m probably too lazy to come up with something else to post!)

Melinda – Fun start to the night, not a bad performance but she needs to work on her breathing while singing

Candice – Great, strong performance

Juliana – Not impressed with this performance

Jett – Mediocre performance. May not have been bad enough for her to go home but it wasn’t a show stopper

Cristabel – Another performance that I was not impressed with.  Last week’s girls were much better.

Aubrey – Finally. Another one that is good!

Rachel – Love her!

Breanna – I guess they were getting all the mediocre singers out of the way in the beginning.

Janelle – I’m torn on this performance. It wasn’t amazing but it wasn’t awful either.  I guess I’d rank her at the top of my middle girls.

Zoanette – I was talking so much shit about her before the performance, she starts the circle of life and I was like… oh no.. (its my favorite movie) and then… WOW.

My picks for going home – Melinda, Juliana, Jett, Cristabel, Janelle

And the Judges say…

Home – Melinda, Juliana, Cristabel, Jett, Rachel
Stay –  Zoanette, Aubrey, Candice, Breanna, Janelle

4/5… really shocked that I didn’t get 5 for 5 this week and truly think that last decision by the judges was incorrect.

Mathenee – A fun song to start the night, but not sure if its strong enough for him to continue

Gurpreet – Not a strong performance from him.

Vincent – Wow. best so far (not that thats saying much)

Nick – Not a fan of the song choice but not a bad performance

Josh – Not a great performance at all.

David – up beat! and pretty good! yay!

Bryant – A great performance!

Burnell – The hand movements were a bit distracting but a good performance

Lazaro – Great performance from Lazaro, as usual.

Cortez – Started strong, ended strong but the middle was questionable. This is going to make my picks difficult.

My picks for going home – Mathenee, Gurpreet, Josh, Nick, Bryant

And the judges say…

Home – David, Bryant, Mathenee, Josh, Gupreet
Staying –  Vincent, Lazaro, Cortez, Burnell, Nick

4/5!

Idol Thoghts: Vegas

This week Idol did a new round – sudden death – 10 contestants will sing,  will go home immediately until we get to the Top 20 and then America will vote.  A little bit confusing since it is new, but we’ll see how it goes!  (I’ve also heard it called the longest sudden death EVER since it will be 4 episodes over 2 weeks!)

Contestant can choose any song they want in any genre for this round.  And here we go!

Jenny – I liked her dress but I wasn’t sure that her vocals were really that strong. I guess we’ll see how the rest go.  (And big shocker but I kind of agreed with Nicki – and I haven’t been digging Nicki as a judge)

Tina – I don’t know that I liked the song choice but I liked her singing.

Adriana – Best one so far!

Brandy – A decent performance but nothing too amazing.

Shubha – I was hoping for a more up beat song from someone tonight but this was not what I was hoping for.

Karmaria – Something was off about this performance.

Kree – I like kree, the performance didnt blow me away but I dont think its bad enough for her to go home.

Angela – Another great performance. I think she is one of my favorites.

Isabelle – Another good performance! (I sound like a broken record)

Amber – And another one! Wow, how am I going to pick the 5 to go home? (A few are obvious… the rest, not so much!)

I’d say Jenny, Shubha, Karmaria, Brandy, Tina should go home.  (That was not as easy as I thought it would be when the show started!)

The judges were unanimous with their decision and made the following decision:
Staying – Tina, Kree, Angela, Amber, Adriana
Going –  Jenny, Brandy, Isabelle, Karmaria, Shubha

4/5, Not too shabby!

Thursday night it was time for the boys! Same rules apply.

Paul – Not great, not a good song choice I dont think.

Johnny – ok so maybe im a little biased but i loved it.

Jda – I really enjoy the more up beat songs. This was a great and entertaining performance!

Kevin – Some parts seemed off in this song, but when it was good it was good.

Chris – This started off good but I think it lost steam. Maybe not enough to send him home though.

Devin – I’m torn on this performance. Parts of it just seemed off and like he couldn’t end words but then other parts were just amazing.

Elijah – Id say this was another middle ground performance. Not sure if it’s good enough to stay.

Charlie – I think his nerves took over at points (you could even see him shaking) and it just was not good.

Jimmy – I wasnt really impressed with this performance

Curtis -Great performance to end the night

My picks for who is going home: Paul, Kevin, Elijah, Charlie, Jimmy

The judges decision was as follows (with 1 split decision)
Staying – Curtis, Elijah, Paul, Charlie, Devin
Going –  Jimmy, Kevin, Jda, Chris, Johnny

SERIOUSLY????  2/5 AND MY FAVORITE IS GONE?  I am going to have to think long and hard if i am going to continue watching this season.  Nicki makes it an unpleasant experience and with no favorite… I don’t know.

Kris Allen at Stage One

Friday night Kris Allen FINALLY returned to Connecticut for a headlining show! (He had been here a few times for radio promo and on tour with Keith Urban and Lifehouse – but never headlining since he got sick on the Idol tour in Bridgeport and couldn’t perform)

I ended up upgrading my tickets to VIP which meant we got to meet Kris before the show and he also did a song for us called “Should I” we were asked not to take video but Kris said that it is out there on YouTube.

At the M&G he asked if I spell my name with an I-E and when I said yes he said that I spell it right. I told him that some people don’t think I do because I have a Y in Kathryn so it should be katy but that’s not how I do it. He seemed surprised I had a Y in Kathryn and he said he had never seen that before and seemed to think it was a bit strange haha  (For those of you that don’t know – his wife is named Katy and I believe it is short for Katherine!)  Then he asked my mom if her name had a Y in it (it does!) and I was going to tease that we really like Y’s in my family but didn’t. ha. (My mom was so happy he asked though because she didn’t think to spell it for him but don’t like when people spell it wrong!)

The M&G was from 6:30-7 and by 7 doors were open so we went to our seats and waiting until 8pm for when Kris would take the stage (there was no opener!)

He is so adorable and such a great performer. I love seeing him!  I also like how he interacts with the crowd. There was a kid in the front row dancing around and he asked for Kris’ hat. Kris said no because then we’d see his hair and then was saying how he loved how kids just don’t care and that if he left the stage the kid would get up there and finish the show for him.  Cale teased that he was Justin Bieber and then Kris said something like.. Justin Bieber is for girls! But then whispered that he liked Justin Bieber but don’t tell anyone. (Oops!)
He also had mentioned that Connecticut was a pretty state and that he didn’t think he had been here since the Idol tour.  At that point I turned to my mom and said “but he didn’t sing!” and a couple other people yelled that out to him and then he went :-O  (Think the face he made when he won idol) and that he had forgotten and then said he was sorry from the bottom of his heart and he apologized and he had never canceled a show before that or since but when he tried to talk nothing was coming out.  Then he mentioned a couple other times that this was to make up for Bridgeport.

He sang a new song that he said will be on iTunes soon… of course – the song doesn’t yet have a name so that wasn’t very good for my setlist. I’ll have to keep a gap in my setlist book for when it does end up getting a name. He also had said that new christmas music is coming soon too! I can not wait!

Casey James @ Mohegan Sun Wolf’s Den

Thursday night Casey James performed at the Wolf’s Den in Mohegan Sun.  This was also my 300th concert!  The show started at 8 and he played for roughly an hour and a half.  The setlist was a mix of songs off his debut album as well as a few covers.  He mentioned how on one of his songs, the guy who played steel guitar on it also played on James Taylor’s record and he did the same chord progression in his song as he did in James’ so sometimes Casey would sit in his car and listen to them back to back. (Of course I can’t remember now which song that was – so if you know comment!)

Casey shows are always a ton of fun – at one point he asked if the drinks had valium in them because the crowd wasn’t too rowdy.  Another time he shh’ed everyone and then was surprised at how quiet it got!  A girl in the front asked for a pick early on and he said he needed to use them and asked if he ran out if she would give it back for him to use.  She said yes so he gave her one.  He didn’t end up running out of picks and tossed 3 or 4 of them out in to the crowd after his last song.

He also told a story – and I hope I can do it justice because I just wrote down some basic notes about it – if it’s not totally correct I’m sorry.  But the Wolf’s Den has a screen behind the performers and I guess Casey didn’t notice it until a few songs in and wasn’t sure what was going on.  He told us about this and then said the other day he was somewhere and there was a mirror but it was angled and he didn’t realize it was a mirror.  He looked over and was like… hey that guy looks a lot like me.. and he’s staring at me!  And then he realized it was a mirror.  He teased about how he’s not so good lookin’ now, right?

After his set he did a signing in the shops.  I unfortunately couldn’t attend, but I hope he had a good turn out and sold a lot of CDs! (You had to buy his debut album to get a wristband for the signing)  I’m looking forward to Mohegan hopefully posting some photos :)

Since this was my 300th concert look for some fun ConcertKatie giveaways coming up in the next week to get every one in on the celebration.

Setlist under the cut :)

American Idols Live 2012

Saturday night I headed to Bridgeport for the American Idols Live! show at the Arena at Harbor Yard.  I had won tickets so I had no idea where we’d be sitting. Turns out we had 2nd row way near the back of the arena.  Probably the farthest back I had ever been, but it was kind of nice to be able to see the whole stage at all times! Unfortunately though we were near a staircase which meant for the beginning of the show a ton of people came late and were walking past us. Same thing happened at the end so I wasn’t able to take as many photos as I would have liked!

I didn’t realize how much I missed last years season and was not a big fan of this years until they played Stefano and Haley’s songs over and over again! haha.  I mean, this year had a few standouts for me (Skylar, Joshua) but overall it was just “ok”.

I still don’t like Colton – and the fact that he had 2 more songs than on the setlist I had researched before the show was a little bit much. Kind of like Pia last year being the focus.  There was also a Colton shirt… I don’t recall anyone other than the top 2 getting shirts before. But the girls seemed to love him…

Heejun was a bit better than I had expected he would be and we thought that he did really good with Party Rock Anthem.

Overall it was a good mix of a setlist.. Joshua and Skylar were both great.  Though I wish that people stood for them without having to be asked.  It is kind of weird, I remember in years past we stood for almost the whole show, the past couple of years you can easily sit for 50% of the show. And the Idols have to say “cmon stand up!” I am not sure why that is.

It is incredibly rare that I fall in love with an album on my first time through playing it. It is even rarer that after listening to it multiple times in a row, that I don’t skip any songs.  However, Listen Up is a cd that I loved from the first note and there are honestly no songs that I feel the need to skip on this CD!   Listen Up really has a throwback, retro vibe, which I think has a lot to do with why I love it so much.  Haley’s voice is amazing as well.  Haley has songwriting credits on nearly all of the 14 songs on the album and the linear notes includes lyrics to all the tracks (this seems to be becoming more and more rare I’ve noticed, maybe it is cheaper to make a smaller CD booklet and toss all the lyrics up on a website instead).    I am having a hard time picking a song as a favorite because they really are so great.  I think that “Oh My” was an excellent choice to start off the album and capture everyone’s attention.  The album really flows as a whole and clocks in at 48 minutes.

Daughtry at Citi Field

The Mets have decided to have a “concert series” this season, with concerts happening after the ball games.  On Friday the concert was former Idol contestant Daughtry.  I’m not really a huge Daughtry fan, but the game was also the day after my birthday so for a while I was considering going.  Then I was lucky enough to win 4 tickets through the Mets Twitter Trivia Thursday contest!
We weren’t sure where the tickets were going to be as they were at Will Call – and they ended up being in section 507 – 5 rows from the top of the stadium!  But they were free, so we couldn’t really complain.  And I actually don’t mind being that high you can see almost everything (except for the right field foul line area).  It started to rain during the game, but we were the first row with an overhang so for the longest time we didn’t even know it was raining unless we looked in the lights and saw it.  Hooray for staying dry!

Unfortunately the Mets lost 7-6… although that 7th run was actually out at 2nd but the umpires were, well, umpires.  Lots of not so great calls.

The game went pretty late so Daughtry was playing well after midnight.  I’d never been to a show at a ballpark before, but it was on my bucket list so it was nice to cross that off!  It was kind of hard to hear, I am not sure if that was because we were so far up, or what. (We did move down a section for the show and probably could have moved down more but the wait for the elevator was taking too long!)

(not 100% sure on this setlist, but it should be pretty close to accurate)

Thank You Camellia is the sophomore effort from American Idol Season 8 Winner Kris Allen, and was released on May 22, 2012 (a big day for CD releases from my favorites!)

After listening to the album several times, it is really hard to pick a stand out song that I would have as my favorite – they are all really great and I am very much so looking forward to a tour backing the album.

Also – my name is in the linear notes of the fan edition!  Does this mean I can cross off ‘have my name in a CD’s linear notes’ from my bucket list?  I only ask because it is only in there because I preordered the fan edition in time to have it included.  Can you cross things off your bucket list if you pay to make it happen?  I guess you can.

Random Note: Meiko who sings with Kris on Loves Me Not opened for Hanson in 2011.
