Idol Thoughts -Top 24 Week 1

IdolThoughts

Wednesday and Thursday last week we got our first taste of the Idol Top 24.  12 of the contestants performed on Wednesday as a solo performance.  On Thursday past Idol contestants Lauren Alaina, Caleb Johnson, Ruben Studdard, Nick Fradiani, Fantasia and Scotty McCreery returned to do duets with the Top 12. (Each past Idol performed twice.)  When I first heard that some of the past contestants will be coming back for the duets I got SO excited.  It was also nice to see them mentoring as well since they had all been through it before, and prevailed.  Everyone but Lauren had won their season – and Lauren came in 2nd so it wasn’t a bad bunch of Idols!

I found it interesting that the song choices for the duets were more catered to the past Idols – songs that they had done in the past – than catering to the new class of Idols that we need to begin forming relationships with.  It’s like they were purposely trying to make the past Idols shine more and say “look what you can be” rather than having something catered to the newer Idols – which may have made the past idols struggle a bit. (Although I guess if the past Idols looked bad it wouldn’t really show the show off)

Here are my thoughts on the performances – based on the order they went in on Wednesday night.

Before the show started my Mom made her pick for the season on who was going to win with Stephany.  She came out first and did Jessie J’s “Mamma Knows Best”.  While I think Stephany can sing, there was something about her and the performance that I didn’t like but I couldn’t my my finger on.  For duet night she did “Superstar” with Ruben.  I thought they had an awesome duet and my prediction for Stephany is that she would be safe.

Second up for the night was Mackenzie.  I liked him on The Voice but I don’t like him being on Idol.  Although I’m sure I’ll get over that in a couple of weeks.  I just don’t like when they already have an established fan base.  But he is good.  He did “Say Something” for his solo performance.  His duet was with Lauren, “I Hope You Dance”, Lauren was just smitten with him.  I really liked how he is not country and Lauren is and he was still able to make the song his own. My prediction is that Mackenzie is safe.

Next up was Jeneve.  She performed “Angel” with a harp.  I think that is the first time that the main performer has ever used a harp on Idol.  Her performance was interesting, but I’m not sold on her.  She did “Gone” with Scotty as her duet and it was a MESS.  I don’t know what happened and I think the judges agreed.  I think that Jeneve will be going home.

Jenna Renae did “My Church” as her solo performance which I don’t think I had ever heard before. I liked the performance.  Her performance of “See You Tonight” with Scotty was really great as well and I loved that Scotty did his “baby lock them doors” on their teaser before the commercial break.  My prediction is that Jenna Renae will be safe.

James VIII did a pretty awesome version of Kanye’s Love Lockdown. This was my favorite performance up until this point on solo night.  He got stuck with Caleb for his solo and they did “Gimme Shelter” which wasn’t as bad as I was expecting, since I think Caleb is awful.  My prediction is James will be safe.

Sonika did “Safe and Sound” for her solo performance.  I really like Sonika but was not a fan of this performance.  Sonika also got the unfortunate task of being paired with Caleb, but I think their performance of “Skyfall” really worked.  I predict that Sonika will be safe and sound.

Gianna Isabella did “I Put A Spell On You” for her solo.  I don’t think that she is all that good, she screams a lot.  I think her mother knowing Jennifer has definitely helped her out a bit and it shouldn’t.  She did “Beautiful Life” with Nick for her duet and it was super awkward and I actually really like that song. I predict Gianna will be leaving us.

Emily Brooke did “I Am Invincible” – while she has grown a lot since last season, this was a really bad performance. I am not sure if she could hear herself in the in ear monitors and that is why it was so bad. Her duet was with Lauren, Flat on the Floor, which was a lot better than the night before, but Lauren sang circles around her.  I think that Emily will be leaving the show.

Avalon did “Love Yourself” I love that she is staying true to herself and wearing comfy clothes on stage! She has a great voice too.  I hope that she sticks around for a while and isn’t forced into outfits / makeup that she doesn’t want to wear.  Her duet was with Ruben – and it was another great performance! Ruben did really, really good with his duets.  He didn’t try to out sing them and made his partners look good.

Jordan did “All By Myself” there is just something about him that I haven’t liked since the auditions when he was celebrating.  I didn’t like this performance either. He’s too broadway and over the top.  His duet with with Fantasia.  He tried to out sing her… which I’m not sure there is anyone out there that can actually pull it off.  I really hope that Jordan is all by himself on the way home.

Thomas Stringfellow did Creep and the rendition was a little bit weird for me.  I think he’s cute though and have liked his previous performances.  His duet was with Nick on Man in the Mirror and I couldn’t help but think he’d be better off doing this one with Kris! I didn’t like whatever weird hiccup things he was doing with his voice.  While I would love for him to stick around, I think he will be leaving us.

La’Porsha is a force to be reckoned with.  She is the front runner from this group of 12! She did a amazing rendition of Proud Mary on night 1 and her duet of Summertime with Fantasia for the second night just blew me away.  I think at this point it is her competition to lose.  And her baby is just so cute!  Needless to say, I think La’Porsha will be sticking around for quite some time.

Who I thought would be going home:  Thomas, Jeneve, Gianna, Emily, Jordan.

Who went home: Emily, Jordan, Stephany, Jenna, James

I definitely would have traded out Jeneve and Gianna for Stephany and James VIII if I was a judge.  I only correctly picked 2 of the 5!  Hopefully I will do better this week!

December 12 – TIC All Star Christmas

Saturday night was TIC’s Annual All Star Christmas.  It was a nice change from the past 2 years – 2 years ago I almost missed the show due to a crazy snow storm and last year there were flurries.  This year my car told me it was the mid-60s as I was driving to the show!

DSC01488-1

Opening the show was CT’s own American Idol Winner Nick Fradiani! He did several songs that should be on his new album and even had his Dad in his band with him!

DSC01493-1

Next up was Charlie Puth. He seems to be blowing up lately. He mentioned he was 24 and then went on to say that one of his songs he was not going to say who it was about and that he was “pulling a Carly Simon” and that the parents in the audience would get what he meant. I’m not a parent and totally knew what he meant… His songs seem to have and older throwback feel to them which I liked… but I’m not sure I like Charlie himself.

DSC01495-1 DSC01497-1

One of the guys from the Bachelorette was on hand to help TIC’s Gina J introduce Nate Ruess to the stage. I didn’t realize how many of his songs I was familiar with.  He had a lot of energy but I just can’t get into his voice.  He also did Rocket Man which he said was as close to a Christmas song as he had but I’m not sure how he made that connection?

DSC01501-1

After Nate was Rachel Platten. I had never seen her before so I was surprised to see she was a Mandy Moore type with her belly button showing. I also never would have guessed that she was older than me. She came off a bit young on stage – getting so excited during one of her songs tha the phones lit up looked so pretty like a Christmas tree! I do like her 2 singles though, Fight Song and Stand By You.  She mentioned she’d be coming to CT on her tour in the spring but I am not seeing a CT date. I’d probably check her out again if she did come through.

DSC01504-1

The Band Perry was up next.  For some reason their set up was all done squished to the other side of the stage. This was also when the row in front of me decided to show up and dance around all drunk and block most of my view. I enjoyed their set. They did a few new songs – Live Forever – after If I Die Young which was pretty funny. And one that they said they had never done live before at all so we were their guinea pigs.

DSC01510-1 DSC01518-1

I planned on leaving mid-way through Rob Thomas’ set because I didn’t think I’d like him and wanted to not get stuck in the parking lot for 30-45 minutes after the show (what can I say, I’m getting old and wanted to get to sleep at a decent hour)  But a quick check of TIC’s twitter feed implied that Nick might be coming out to sing with Rob, so instead I figured I’d better stick around at least to see that.  I have to say though that I was very impressed with Rob. He has amazing stage presence and I really enjoyed his set.  He did have Nick come out to sing “Bright Lights” with him – although for most of it Rob just kind of sat back and let Nick have the stage which was really cool.  You could tell how excited Nick was to be sharing the stage with him and once it was done Nick said “BUCKET LIST!” and made a check mark.  I think Rob still had a couple more songs to go, but I snuck out after that – and I was not the only one.

Overall TIC put together another great line up for this show and I think it is the first time there had not been an an artist I’ve seen before in the line up!

I didn’t keep track of setlists but did try to piece them together later – so if you were there and know that I got it horribly wrong – please let me know!

Music Monday: David Cook Criminals

scook

David Cook’s latest single is “Criminals” off the forthcoming album “Digital Vein”. I may be biased, but I absolutely love the song! If you’re a fan of David and his sound then I don’t see why you wouldn’t absolutely love this song because it is just so very dcook.  I am also very much so looking forward to his new album which is set to be released September 18.  He will also be embarking on a tour in the fall and I am hoping that I will be able to make it to his show in Norfolk, CT at Infinity Hall!

Kelly Clarkson Mohegan Sun 7/23

Thursday night Kelly Clarkson brought her Piece by Piece 2015 tour to the Arena at Mohegan Sun.  She had three opening acts along for the ride – Abi Ann, Eric Hutchinson and Pentatonix.

Abi was up first and at 17 years old I think she still needs some work.  I’m not sure if the sound system was off or she was but I can’t see her really going anywhere if she continues to sing so off key. She mentioned it was her first ever Arena and I just can’t see her being to that stage on her own, ever. Hope I’m wrong but…

Eric Hutchinson was up next. I was really excited to see him, last time I saw him was about 3 years ago.  He was a lot of fun and a really up beat set. I also loved how he had choreographed moves with his other guitar players. You’re never really expecting that from a band, but it’s always appreciated by this boyband fan!

Pentatonix was next up and somehow their stage seemed to take the longest to set up – despite the fact that they are an acapella group and had no instruments! They did have risers to stand on though and obviously those had to be safe and secure before they could take the stage!  They did a lot of the same songs that they did when I saw them headline back in March.  A new addition was a Michael Jackson medley that was amazing and the current hit “Cheerleader” which was pretty cool too even though I’m so sick of that song (and I haven’t even been listening to that much Top 40 lately… but I heard it 2 or 3 times just on the ride up the casino!)

Kelly took the stage at about 9:30 and played until 11! I thought I was going to be so tired and not make it through her whole set but she was so high energy that it was contagious and I could not believe that an hour and a half had passed when she was exiting the stage!

She promised to play her hits as well as showcase a lot of the new songs off her new album that she loved as well.  I think that she found a great balance between the two.

I love that before Mr Know It All she dedicated it to anyone who had a jerk of a man in their life – maybe a coworker.  I’ve definitely been dealing with that lately and never realized just how perfect this song fits the situation! Thanks, Kelly!

She has also been featuring an open mic night each night on the tour since she basically got her start at a really, really big open mic night.  We were treated to Mya Silva (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCTfAe4DcgJHfWB4oI6AdL2g/feed) doing Gnarls Barkley’s Crazy!  After Mya, Kelly did the fan request which was Elvis’ Can’t Help Falling in Love.  I was a bit disappointed because the night before she did NSYNC’s Bye Bye Bye (though I’m not sure I could have handled that anyway!) and a few nights ago she did Nick Jonas’ Jealous.  Although she kills whatever she does so it was a great rendition and Elvis isn’t all that bad 😉

I was also super happy that the song that she decided to do for her throw back was my favorite Kelly song – Beautiful Disaster. It seems like she hasn’t done this one live since 2008 so I was quite happy to get to see it!

At the end of the set she did an amazing mash up of Bruno Mars Uptown Funk and Walkaway that was pure genius! Such a great mix of the two songs. I loved it!

KTUphoria 2015

Euphoria – a feeling of happiness, confidence or well-being

When I woke up Sunday, I didn’t know what I had in store for me.  I had a message from my friend Miriam that she had tickets to KTUphoria at Jones Beach on Long Island and meet and greet passes for Kelly Clarkson.  I had never met Kelly before, so despite it being the end of the weekend I decided I would join her at the show. Also performing were Adam Lambert, Pitbull and Ricky Martin (and others) – who I’d wanted to see as well.

She told me that she was taking the Rally Bus to the venue which would give her the chance to win Adam Lambert passes. I opted to drive in case I wanted to leave the show early and she told me that doors were at 5 and her bus would get in at 4 so I told her I’d meet her there at 4.

Despite getting a bit lost and driving around in (literally) circles at one point I arrived right at 4.  I checked my phone and had a message from her that they hadn’t even left yet, though it was from about an hour before.  When I told her I had arrived she said she still hadn’t even left yet (!) and was getting the contact info for someone who could get me inside even though she had our tickets. (Which made me laugh because I *promised* the guy at the parking lot I had a ticket rather than parking by will call. Guess I lied!)

Melanie met up with me and got me inside and gave me a pass to meet Adam – but I still had no ticket. I walked around to see if there were any other contests going on and to case out where I had to go to meet Adam and to see if I could figure out where to go to meet Kelly (turns out it was the same spot)  Melanie said Miriam would be getting there at 5:30, but Miriam was telling me otherwise. We had no idea if she’d even arrive in time to meet Kelly and the passes were in her name!

I talked to the girl at the pick up for the M&G passes and she told me if I could get an image of Miriam’s ID, even if she texted it to me, that I could get the passes.  That is what we did and I had the passes and was still hoping the bus would show up by 6:30pm.

Kelly’s set started and Melanie ended up giving me her ticket so I could go inside and watch. I stayed for a couple of songs but then headed over to the M&G area to make sure I wouldn’t miss it. I left Miriam’s pass back at the pick up area on the off chance she made it in time. (spoiler: she didn’t)

We walked back to the “backstage” area and lined up to meet Kelly. She is so cute! (I even told her that) she greeted me with a hug and asked my name and we took the photo. It was a small group to meet her so we got a bit more time with her than usual rushed M&Gs.

I had asked if I could hang back since Adam’s M&G was next and I didn’t want to walk back and forth again and they said that would be fine. Things ended up delayed so I had a chair brought over for me and was able to watch Adam’s set (and I had heard Prince Royce’s during the Kelly M&G) and then was first in line for his M&G.  I got to see Kelly leave and Laura Marano from Austin and Ally walked by too but I didn’t say anything to her.

I ended up getting a text from Miriam around 7 that she was in line for the Adam M&G so I told her I would see her after since I was already back there. The Adam M&G was super fast and didn’t have much time to say more than hi!  Justin Baron was on during Adam’s M&G and I realized that I had seen him walking around earlier but wasn’t sure who he was!

After the Adam M&G Melanie found me and she was also with the CEO of Rally Bus. We chatted a bit before Miriam came out of her M&G and talked to him. She obviously had a lot to say – since she had missed the M&G with Kelly (the reason we were going) and was not happy about it – she was heartbroken.  The CEO bought us drinks and Melanie was able to track down closer seats and a M&G for Jason Derulo for us.

We finally went inside at this point to see the show and Shaggy was on stage. We saw a couple of his songs and then they set up for the next act. We thought it would be Jason, our M&G with him was going to be after his set and I was worried I’d miss Ricky Martin.  But it turned out that Ricky was up next instead! His set seemed to be extra long so we wondered if maybe Jason hadn’t arrived yet and was on a rally bus of his own.

Jason was up next and he seemed to have a long set as well, especially since I was told the show would end at 10:30 (if on time) and we still needed to wait for Pitbull! Of course, with Jason and Ricky’s longer sets I should have known that something was going on.  They had JASON announce that Pitbull was unable to make it to the show before he did his last song. I thought this was such a copout from KTU – they knew that no one would lash out at Jason like they would if one of the DJs made the announcement instead.  After Jason’s set was done, everyone was booing because a lot of people were there to see Pitbull! (He was the only artist who had merch available for purchase at the booths!)

We made our way over to where the M&G for Jason was going to be and started walking to backstage again. Of course about half way there it started to downpour so we got to the tent looking like drowned rats. They huddled us all under the tent where the other M&G photos were taken but then ended up taking us to the actual backstage area (or ‘behindstage’) to meet Jason.  After checking multiple times for our passes (mine was a soggy mess at this point) we were told we MUST be in groups of 2 (or more) and it was going to go quick. So we got our pic, look soaked and ridiculous while Jason is dry and almost shirtless… and then headed back to the car – only this time I had the chance to put my rain coat on. I gave Miriam a ride home so she wouldn’t have to deal with the rally bus on the way home too. (Though we heard they got home without incident)

All in all, I am not sure the evening was anything close to “euphoric” but rally bus does seem like they’re going to try and make things up to us.  I will of course keep everyone posted but I am hesitant to try them for any event that actually has a starting time or where any sort of M&G opportunity is on the line!  I am so upset that Miriam was the one who got the passes for Kelly and wasn’t able to meet her 🙁

Concert Review: Lee DeWyze at Fairfield Theater

Wednesday night, Lee DeWyze returned to the Fairfield Theater for a show. Opening was My Silent Bravery and Anna Rose.

My Silent Bravery was up first and did a set of 6 songs – POV, To Give with a mash up of Magic!’s Rude, On My Side with a mash up of Wonder wall, Not Necessarily So, a cover of Nelly’s Ride With Me, and ended their set with Amazing. (Gotta love openers who mention all their song names!)

Next up was Anna Rose – who has one of the most amazing voices that I’ve heard in a while. I was incredibly impressed with her set. I guess she tours with Tony Lucca a lot – but Tony always skips CT so I’d never had the chance to see her before.

Then it was time to get Idol spoilers from the Lady sitting behind me. Her husband was texting her as everyone made it through and she felt the need to announce them all. Thanks lady, I wasn’t DVRing to watch when I got home or anything… (I was trying to hard to avoid social media during the show too!)

When Lee took the stage someone yelled out that he was looking fancy and he teased that he could park your car.  Sing you a song and park your car.  He also mentioned that he was drinking on stage and the problem with drinking on stage is that everyone thinks that you’re drunk.  He told us that it was his first drink of the night so no, he wasn’t drunk, and also that if you are drinking on stage if you so much as trip – then everyone thinks you’re drunk.  Later in the set he went to switch guitars and tripped a little and had to laugh.  (The majority of my notes from this show are about him drinking so now I’m going to make it seem like he’s a drunk – he’s not!)  During his Wake Me Up / Stay With Me mashup he got so into it and his drink was near the edge of the stool he had on stage.  And it fell right off the stool. He didn’t even realize it and a few people let him know and he imitated the drink saying it was having so much fun it was going to jump… and then it did.  He went on to talk about one of his new songs that he was going to sing for us called Stone.  Someone asked what it was about and he said “a rock” and went on to explain the song.  He mentioned it had a river in it and everyone started cheering – because venue staff brought him out a new drink.  He didn’t know what was going on and thought we all just really liked rivers.  Then he was talking to the drink saying “Don’t do what your brother did, don’t you do it!” and then said that he was an idiot.

I hadn’t seen Lee live since just after he won Idol so I wasn’t really familiar with too much of his stuff.  I thought he had a really solid set and I loved the covers he threw in – Cecelia, Hallelujah (which he mentioned wasn’t on the setlist – but he makes a list basically telling himself what to do and he decided that he was going to change up what he told himself to do and play it) and the Wake Me Up / Stay With Me mashup – that ended up looping back into Don’t Be Afraid which was the song he had sung before these two which was cool.  And I loved the passion in his voice and how performing some of the songs seemed to just consume him.  It’s a shame that he was playing to a room of only 100 or so people!

Piece by Piece is the 7th studio album from American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson.  It was released at the end of February and quickly made its way to #1.  I purchased it from Kelly’s website mainly to get a presale for her tour – which is kicking off July 11 in Hershey, PA.  I’ve found that presales with album codes can be hit or miss – but since I love so much of Kelly’s stuff it was a risk I was willing to take, as even if the tickets didn’t end up being the best, I was sure that the album would be.  That was true. I love her album and cannot wait to see some of it performed live when I see her this summer.  I think that my favorite song is Invincible – simply because that seems to be the one stuck in my head the most since listening!

This is a CD I definitely recommend!
