Book Review: Iris & Dragonflies
Iris and the Dragonflies is a middle grade fantasy novel by Rosemary Danielis. It tells the story of Iris, who appears to be just a regular school girl, but it is revealed that she can talk to Dragonflies. When her local creek (her favorite spot to talk to the dragonflies) is in danger, she steps up and tries to stop to company who wants to develop there and to save the creek.
Also, on a trip to Ireland during school vacation, she heads to Ireland to visit her grandmother. There she finds a dragon tooth – proof that dragons exist. She also ends up finding out that she is a Dragon Seer and can talk to dragons too!
Other sub plots in the story revolve around Iris and her life at school – she has just one friend, Grace, and they can hear each other talking even when they aren’t right next to each other. The next year in school, a lot of new students join the class and it turns out that there is a whole group of them who can hear each other and now Grace and Iris have more friends than just each other.
The story is obviously aimed at children much younger than me, but I thought that it was a great story and fun to follow. It also showed about how anyone can make a difference – even if they are only 11 years old and in school and also the importance of friendship. (And as the author says – the magic within us!)
