Book Review: The Wicked Girls

wickedgirlsThe Wicked Girls is a bit of 2 stories in one. And try as I might, I just could not get into the present day story. In fact, after getting about 1/4 through the book and deciding I just couldn’t focus on the modern day aspect of the story, I skipped the rest of it and instead went just to the parts from 1986 that were written in the book. Usually I try to tough it out and finish all the books I review, but with this one I just couldn’t. If it was one book just about what happened in 1986 – I would have loved it!

Back in 1986 2 girls – Jade and Bel – first meet. By the end of the day, a 4 year old that was left in their care is dead. The two older girls were charged with murder. Both girls are now out of juvenile detention centers and have resumed normal lives and new names. Even their significant others do not know about their past.

In the present day – Amber works at an amusement park where a woman turns up dead. Kirsty shows up to cover the investigation as she now works as a journalist. The two recognize each other as Bel and Jade. They had agreed to never see each other again – but here they are together once again. (And I’m not even really sure what ends up happening because I didn’t care to read enough to find out)

If you have more patience than me – you might enjoy both sides of this story.

About the Book

Eleven year-old Jade and Bel met for the first time one summer day, a day that began innocently enough, but that ended in calamity: six-year old Chloe is found dead and Jade and Bel are charged with her murder. THE WICKED GIRLS, (A Penguin Original; $16.00; ISBN 978-0-14-312386-6; On sale: July 30, 2013; also available as an e-book) by Alex Marwood, follows the lives of these two girls, who will never be able to fully erase the events of that day and whose destinies are forever intertwined because of it.

Both women have tried to forget the horrific circumstances of their childhoods—Chloe’s death and the juvenile detention, isolation, and series of hard-knocks that followed it. Twenty-five years later, Jade and Bel have become Kirsty Lindsay and Amber Gordon, their true identities kept secret from their friends, families, and loved ones. Kirsty works as a journalist with two children and a loving husband. Bel, recently promoted at the amusement park in the seaside town of Whitmouth where she works, owns a house and lives with her long-term boyfriend. Neither has set eyes on the other since that fateful summer day.

But when a series of deadly attacks on women shakes the town of Whitmouth, Kirsty is sent there on assignment to cover the investigation. Amber and Kirsty, both entrenched in the growing turmoil, are forced to confront each other once again and to face the past that they have struggled so hard to hide.

As the Whitmouth murders escalate, Amber and Kirsty’s lives are threatened in ways neither could have foreseen, endangering the sense of normalcy that they have desperately struggled to maintain since changing their identities. As circumstances draw Amber and Kirsty closer and closer together, the two women are forced to make an incomprehensible decision that will cement their fates together forever.

Fans of the Academy Award-nominated film Heavenly Creatures and the novels of Rosamund Lupton and Chevy Stevens will appreciate the suspense of Marwood’s novel. Dark, fast-paced, and gripping, THE WICKED GIRLS will challenge your notions of right and wrong and leave you holding your breathe until the very end.

Book Review: The Hard Way

hard_way_300 The Hard Way is actually the 3rd book in a series which features PI Helen McCorkendale and magazine editor Laurel Imperiole. I had not read the first 2 books in the series before reading The Hard Way and I don’t think that you have to either  – though I am considering going back and reading the other 2 now because I enjoyed this one so much!

The book starts with Helen and her boyfriend Mike visiting a new casino in Las Vegas called January that is run by one of Helen’s friends, Jimmy.  When she gets home, Helen tells Laurel about the casino and suggests that she do a getaway contest in her magazine, Women Now.

Things start to get suspicious when the woman who won, Dawn Chapman, claims that she did not enter the contest and doesn’t want the prize trip! The magazine’s lawyers say that the winner must go an alternate cannot be chosen, so Laurel somehow convinces Dawn to take the trip.

Shortly after arriving, Dawn goes white as a sheet and passes out.  Did she see something or someone she didn’t want to see? She wants to g home immediately – but Jimmy is doing this trip for publicity in the magazine and needs to try and get at least a few photo-ops with the winner! He convinces her to stick around a bit longer – but ends up finding her dead by the pool!

And then the fun starts. It turns out that Dawn is not Dawn after all and Helen, Laurel and Jimmy are determined to get to the bottom of what may be going on!

Laurel and her ex, Aaron, work on the case from New York City while Helen heads to Las Vegas to see what she can find and make sure that Jimmy is proven innocent.  Dawn was poisoned with Cyanide and diamond dust…

There’s a lot of drama that unfolds once we get into the investigation of what is going on. I don’t want to say too much because this was a fun read and I want you to check it out as well! There is a lot going on but I didn’t find it difficult to keep track – even with it bouncing back from different sides of the country.  There also isn’t a drawn line of who is “good” and who is “bad”  – some seem to switch sides and some may be both – so how can Helen figure out who to trust and who not to trust while she tries to get to the bottom of this? Her life could be at stake!

A quick and easy read – and a must read for anyone who loves a good murder mystery! A lot of twists and turns that kept me on my toes!

The Hard Way Summary:

Private Investigator Helen McCorkendale’s childhood friend, Jimmy Scanlan, has just opened January, the most lavish casino and hotel resort on the Las Vegas Strip. After attending the grand opening, Helen returns to New York and encourages her friend, Laurel Imperiole, Senior Editor at Women Now magazine, to create a get-away contest for readers offering a weekend at the hotel as the grand prize. The winner, Dawn Chapman, a jewelry store employee from Cincinnati, denies entering the contest and initially refuses the trip. Finally persuaded by Laurel to accept, she arrives at the hotel and nearly faints when she passes the hotel’s elite meeting rooms where the International Diamond Dealers Consortium is holding its annual meeting. She insists on returning home immediately.

Suspicious of her behavior, Jimmy visits her suite to encourage her to attend the Saturday afternoon pool party, saying she can leave on his private jet the next day. Later in the afternoon, he finds Chapman’s dead body by the pool. She’s been murdered—an unusual double poisoning by cyanide and diamond dust.

Dawn Chapman was not who she appeared to be, and therein lies a mystery. But to Helen and Laurel, the main task is to take Jimmy Scanlon off the suspect list and clear his name. Will their luck hold? Or will it be a crap shoot, as they roll the dice and do it ‘the hard way,’ going for doubles when the odds are against them. Losing may mean losing their lives.

Book Review: The Hot Corner

hotcorner

I’ve been pretty happy with the abundance of romance novels that have a baseball theme lately, which is obviously why I chose to read The Hot Corner. The story seemed incredibly predictable from the beginning – Dani Young is an author and has been writing biographies of famous athletes. She’s recently broken up with her fiance and her publisher tells her that All-Star 3rd baseman Brad Reynolds has asked for her specifically to write his biography.  Sounds great, right?  Well, it would be – if the two hadn’t dated in college and Dani broke up with him because she thought he was a liar and a cheat.

However, she agrees to write the book (and the large monetary advance probably doesn’t hurt either).  From the beginning we can tell that Brad wants Dani again – and that Dani is trying everything in her power to have that not happen. But it’s pretty obvious that they’re going to end up together.  Then there’s the “twist” that Dani is convinced that Brad had cheated on her with his best friend Bailey – she saw them together at the hotel when she flew in to surprise Brad 7 years ago.  They told each other that they loved each other and then they kissed.  How could it be anything other than that?  But when Brad explains his side of the story – things start to fall apart between them.

Now that Brad knows that there was a time when Dani didn’t trust him, could he be with her again with that in the back of his mind?

While I did end up liking the book in the end, it was very predictable at parts and other parts of the story seemed to drag on a bit.

About the Book

Professionally, Danielle Pierce is making a name for herself writing biographies of famous athletes. Her star is on the rise, and her publisher is pleased. Her personal life isn’t going as swimmingly, and she’s recently back on the market after calling off her engagement to Mr. Perfect-On-Paper, not that she’s looking for anyone special. Her career is her focus and it keeps her content.

Her agent and publisher throw her a curveball she never saw coming when she’s assigned to cover the hottest baseball player—on and off the field—Bradley Reynolds. Brad, the Dodgers’ third baseman, spends as much time on the covers of tabloids as on the sports pages, dating models and actresses, each one more beautiful than the last. But he doesn’t let them distract him from his need to excel on the field. Baseball comes first, and it always has, ever since the love of his life walked away from him years ago. Danielle Pierce had been the only woman who ever mattered to him, the only one who ever would.
Dani never thought she’d have to see Brad in person again, let alone spend weeks with him writing his biography. He broke her heart in college, and she’d never risked it since. Seven years later he selects her to write the story of his life, and she’s stuck between a rock and a hard place. If she refuses, she looks like a coward. If she gives in, he wins. Can she be around him without falling for his Southern charm and deadly looks again? Can she show him that he didn’t break her? She doesn’t know what his game is, but she hopes she’s strong enough this time to play without getting burned.

Book Review: The World Series

worldseriesThis is a nice short book that explains the history of The World Series with some great photos from past games.  It is only about 60 pages though it is full with a lot of great information – and a lot of even greater photos!  It also has a lot of great information on the history of the sport in general, not just the world series, like why there are leagues and when they were split. (There’s even a bit on the Rockford Peaches – a team you may recognize if you’ve seen the movie A League of their Own!) Another chapter is all about the greatest world series games ever played. A lot of really exciting moments are recapped in this chapter! Chapter 3 is all about those that come up BIG in the big games! World Series MVPs.  Chapter 4 is all about those memorable moments in the World Series – you know, like the bloody sock!  (And Bill Buckner!)  And then the book ends with the future of the World Series. Playoffs keep getting expanded- and a lot of people have some thoughts on that. What might the World Series look like 30 years from now?

Book Review: Perfect 10

perfect10Perfect 10 is a Cosmo Red Hot Read from Harlequin which means that it is a better written short romance book and currently the only romance novels I am considering reading after reading several flops.  In Perfect 10, Katrina is in the middle of a social media disaster when her phone somehow connects her BootyBook app with her other online profiles.  BootyBook is an app where you rank your sexual conquests – and now everyone can see who she dated and what she thought of them.  Her phone is going nuts with all sorts of angry text messages – but one message stands out above the rest.  This message came from one of the guys who was the Perfect 10 – Drew.  They hooked up one night and it ruined their friendship.  Katrina hopes that maybe they can be friends again – but will it be different now that she ranked him as magnificent?

The two end up hanging out again and then end up getting together again.  Maybe this social media disaster didn’t turn out to be such a disaster after all?

About the Book

Katrina’s Lesson in Social Media Disasters
or How Technology Can Bite You in the A**

Katrina Phillips is an expert social media manager. But that doesn’t mean she can’t make mistakes. Horrible, hide-in-your-closet-forever mistakes…like accidentally syncing her BootyBook app with her online profiles.

Blammo. Now everyone in the world can see who Katrina has dated and how they rated in appearance, sexual performance and (OMG) detailed descriptions of their manly parts! Now her phone is blowing up with angry exes—and an out-of-the-blue text from the only guy who came close to a perfect score….

Katrina has had a thing for Drew Jordan since forever ago, even if a booze-fuelled one-nighter did destroy their friendship. So why is he suddenly texting her now—and is it because she rated his Sexy Staff of Manliness as “magnificent?” Now the only way to satisfy her curiosity is to reunite with Drew…and rate him all over again!

Book Review: Lorde: Your Heroine

lordeI didn’t know much about Lorde. I know she’s young. I know she has a couple of completely overplayed songs on the radio. That’s about it. So when I saw there was a biography out about her, I was interested to read it to see what I could find out. Now I know her real name is Ella Maria Lani Yelich O’Connor (I can see now why she shortened it!) and that she is quite a smart kid. While it seems that Lorde may have been somewhat of an overnight success, she had been working for a few years before hitting it big, trying to write songs.  Although she seems to have a bit of an attitude about her that she knew it wouldn’t work out and then magically it didn’t work out. (Funny how that happens?)  Though after returning to school she ended up meeting a song writer that she actually clicked with.

Fun fact – the title of the song Royals came from a photo she saw of a member of the Royals baseball team signing baseballs in a magazine.

I certainly learned a lot about Lorde and how she became Lorde and a household name.  How her boyfriend is 7 yrs older than her and how in the beginning she had trouble taking criticism about him. She is also very involved with what has her name attached to it and will shoot down ideas she thinks are “corny”, which I can’t blame her for.

This book is short, only 85 pages, but I imagine a few years down the line it will be much, much longer with more details of her career as she gets older.

About the Book

Lorde is the voice of her generation, a head-strong, determined young woman who knows what she wants and has known how she was going to get it form an early age.

She’s a renowned feminist, a performer with a minimalist/Goth/Electropop style that is as haunting as it is incredibly enticing and thought provoking.

She’s won two Grammys for her song ‘Royals,’ has captivated audiences all over the world. But guess what? She still lives at home, she still does the dishes and she still goes to school. Quite an accomplishment for a woman who just turned 17.

Book Review: Saving Gracie

gracieDisclosure: I got this product as part of an advertorial.

Saving Gracie is a murder mystery at its core – but there are a lot of other sub-plots going on as well with the characters in this small town in New Hampshire.  The main character is Gracie – she may be crazy and is on several medications.  The book begins with her losing a child after giving birth to it.  We then fast forward 52 years.  Gracie is being visited by a red-headed ghost.  She thinks that she sees her head in the lake – but it turns out to be just a purse.  She brings it to the police and tells them what the ghost is telling her – someone is going to die tonight.  The police kind of shrug her off – she is known for being crazy after all – but figure maybe they should believe her when a body is found in the pond.

Things get all sorts of crazy from there as the local officer and the Staties try to figure out just who it was that killed this man and why.  The local officer, Marcel, realizes that maybe these people that he thought he knew his whole life, he doesn’t really know at all.

At first, it took some time for me to get in to this book. I actually fell asleep after reading the first 2 chapters.  But I looked on GoodReads after that and saw that many, many of the reviews were 5 stars so I figured I should try to stick it out and finish it.  And I’m glad I did! Although things got off to a rough start for me, once the story started unfolding I found it hard to put the book down. (Although I did take another break to sleep for the night after getting 2/3 of the way through, I didn’t want to, but it was already 3am and I needed to!)  This is why I always try to continue through books even if they don’t catch my attention in the beginning – I think the fact that the book was 300+ pages was putting me off – although once I got into things it flew by and didn’t seem like that many pages at all.

There were a lot of characters in town, but I didn’t have trouble keeping track of who was who because they all had their little quirks and connections to each other to help me keep track of them all.  I did have trouble keeping track of who was good and who was bad – but I’m pretty sure I was not the only one with that problem! (I won’t say more because I don’t want to give anything away!)

If you are looking for a great murder-mystery with some romance and drama mixed in for good measure – than Saving Gracie is the book for you!

About the Book
Saving Gracie is a small-town murder mystery with plenty of humor, a touch of romance, a hint of paranormal, and enough suspense to raise your heart rate.

When Gracie is accosted by a redheaded ghost, Officer Marcel Trudeau assumes the old gal is hallucinating. Again. But to Gracie the dead girl is real, and her message is urgent—someone will die tonight.

Sure enough, a body surfaces in Echo Pond, and the town of Coyne Falls plunges into chaos. In the furor that follows, the victim’s widow jumps out a window, a dead man sends text messages, a missing person is duct taped to a toilet, and a beagle runs howling into the night.

Meanwhile, the ghost sends Gracie on a mission: “follow the beagle” to save a life.

Book Review: Country Music Broke My Brain

countryCountry Music Broke My Brain is a Behind-the-Microphone Peek at Nashville’s Famous and Fabulous Stars by Gerry House.  Gerry tells his story – from growing up listening to the radio to hosting “Gerry House & The Foundation” radio show.  This book is really interesting because it tells the story of some Country musicians from a bit of a different perspective – which is the other side of the microphone – from him working in radio and being somewhat in the inner circle.

I knew I was going to enjoy this book when the glossary was not at the beginning of the book, not at the end of the book, but somewhere around chapter 5.  I think that’s to make sure you really give it a good look so that you can follow along as you read through the rest of the book.  I’m not really familiar with Gerry at all – or well, I wasn’t before reading this book – but I really enjoyed it and thought it was really well written and a great look into the country music scene.  Great stories, funny stories.  I’m “not a country fan” (or so I keep saying. But I’m not sure how true it is anymore) and still found this book to be very enjoyable even though I might not have been familiar with all the artists mentioned.

Oh and did I mention there were also quizzes throughout the book?  They’re multiple choice and if you don’t know the answer – you will – because it’ll be explained in the next chapter.  I found this to be an nice touch to kind of pique your interest before getting into the chapter.  Also pretty funny are the band names that aren’t yet taken that he has posted in one of the chapters. “Trailer Swift”? Ha.

A great read for any music fan.

I received a free e-copy of this book in order to write this review. I was not otherwise compensated.

About the Book

Nashville is filled with stars and lovers and writers and dreamers. Nashville is also teeming with lunatics and grifters and dip wads and moochers. Gerry House fits easily into at least half of those categories. Someone would probably have to be brain-damaged or really damn talented to try to entertain professional entertainers over a decades-long radio show in Music City, USA.

Fortunately, House is little of both.

Host of the nationally syndicated, top-rated morning show, “Gerry House & The Foundation” for 25 years, he has won virtually every broadcasting award there is including a place in the National Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame. Gerry also spent that time deep inside the songwriting and recording world in Nashville.

In Country Music Broke My Brain, Gerry tells his stories from the other side of the microphone. He reveals never-aired, never-before published conversations with country music’s biggest names—Johnny Cash, Brad Paisley, and Reba McEntire to name a few—and leaves you with his own crazy antics that will either have you laughing or shaking your head in disbelief.

With exclusive celebrity stories, humorous trivia and anecdotes, and broadcasting wisdom, this book is a treat for country music fans or for anyone who wants a good laugh.

Book Review: Billion Dollar Bad Boy

badboyThe Billion Dollar Bad Boy is the second book in The Billionaire’s Club, the story of Donovan Morrow.  His brother’s story I have already read and reviewed in The Billionaire Bachelor.  In this story, Donovan is meeting with Victoria, who wants to buy some land that Donovan’s brother Jax wants him to sell.  Except that Donovan doesn’t want to sell it and is trying to convince Jax that he can do something with it to make it worth their while.  But Victoria is determined to get the land to show her father that even though she is adopted, she has what it takes to be a de Winter and earn his respect.

Although Victoria is engaged, the two end up hooking up in the back of the limo on the way to Jax and Pandora’s engagement party. (The subjects of the previous book.)  Donovan wants to get to Jax to convince him to NOT sell, while Victoria is hoping to get to Jax to convince him TO sell.  Except now Donovan seems to be head over heels in love with Victoria – who has insisted she used her “Get Out Of Jail Free” card on him in the limo and can not do anything else with him.

When Victoria calls her finance to let him know she used her card (which he had previously already used) he tells her that he has met someone else while he was away.  Now Victoria can go after Donovan. But will she?

I liked that this was another short read, but it seemed to read a bit similarly to the other book in the series – same type of relationship and storyline – just different characters.  There is a 3rd book coming out on the 3rd brother, Sean.  It will be interesting to see if that book is any different than the other two.  If you did not read the previous book I don’t think you’d have any problems really following this one – Jax and Pandora are in it only shortly and there seems to be enough information about it that you won’t be lost or confused.

I received a free e-copy of this book in order to write this review. I was not otherwise compensated.

Victoria has enjoyed great success in her family’s business—and now that she’s engaged, she seems to have her future all figured out. But as soon as she meets Donovan, she is tormented by their mutual desire…and soon she is his to possess. But what is the price of surrendering to the Billion Dollar Bad Boy?
