The Ready Set Dunkin Donuts Music Lounge 5/26

Thursday afternoon I once again headed to the Dunkin Donuts Music Lounge, this time for a live chat and private performance with The Ready Set, thanks to Kiss 95.7 (and my friend Pam who won and invited me along!)

Jordan was already in the room when we got in and JC from Kiss 95.7 was also there to emcee the chat.  The room was first asked if they had any questions for Jordan and then JC also had some questions submitted by listeners.  Everything was broadcast on UStream.

Gavin DeGraw Acoustic Cafe May 24, 2011

96.5 TIC had an Acoustic Cafe Tuesday afternoon at Black Bear Saloon in Hartford, CT.  Acoustic Cafes are always pretty small and intimate, and this one was no different.

Shortly after I arrived, Gavin arrived and went in to the room where the stage was for soundcheck.  Once he was finished, we were all brought in to the room where the stage was and a couple of minutes later Gavin was introduced and took the stage.

Previously, I had never seen Gavin before and he was on my “Life List” as a must see and I have to say, he did not disappoint.  He did 3 songs – Chariot, Not Over You and I Don’t Wanna Be.

After the set we got photos with him.  Gavin’s arm is in a sling but he was still shaking hands and hugging everyone the best he could 🙂

This acoustic cafe win was part of a Double Play – so I am also going to be on the list for David Cook’s acoustic cafe in a couple of weeks!

Siobhan Magnus at Mohegan Sun

Friday night Siobhan Magnus performed at Mohegan Sun as part of their “Reality Check” series where they have reality stars come for a performance and a signing.  Siobhan did 4 songs – 3 covers – Blonde’s Maria, Melissa Ethridge’s I’m The Only One and Stevie Wonder’s Superstition.  Then she did a short Q&A with the crowd (Jacob was her favorite this season – she wants Lauren to win because she didn’t think there would ever be another female winner…) She finished the set with her single Beatrice’s Dream.

I was pleased to see that she took the stage wearing her “I <3 Hanson” shirt! I had on a Hanson shirt too – in hopes of starting a conversation with her – and it worked!  When I got up to meet her she said she liked my shirt and of course I said that I liked her shirt too! We chatted a bit about various Hanson things and I got her to sign an extra photo which I will be giving away through a TWITTER contest so stay tuned for more details on that! (Details coming in the next day or so.)

Matt Morrison cancels tour to join NKOTBSB

When Matt Morrison first released his tour dates, he was not coming to Connecticut, so I debated for a bit on going to NYC to see him, but ultimately decided against it.

Then I found out that he had added a date in Connecticut and was a bit torn on whether or not I wanted to go.  I debated VIP, but it was nearly $300.  His regular tickets were $65 which seemed to be a bit much too.  From the day tickets went on sale until recently, the same seat came up for regular tickets and NO tickets were sold for VIP.

When I finally thought about biting the bullet and getting tickets – Matt made an announcement that he was canceling his tour because he got the opportunity to be on the NKOTBSB tour.  “Got the opportunity” is PR speak for “My tour was selling really poorly so I am going to be an opening act”

Matt doesn’t start the NKOTBSB tour until July – so unfortunately I will not be seeing him at my show  which is at the end of the month.

I have to say I am a bit surprised that Matt opted to join up with 2 boybands, considering that he used to be in LMNT but it seems like he’d rather forget those days.  But I guess if your tour is not selling any tickets – you take what you can get.

Mat Kearney Acoustic Cafe

Thursday, Mat Kearney did an acoustic cafe for TIC 96.5 at Up Or On The Rocks in Hartford, CT.  Wednesday afternoon they posted up 30something pairs of tickets on their online contest page, so I traded in a few points to be able to go.

I had gotten there a little late, but things weren’t ready yet when I got there.  I was instructed to head up the stairs so Mat could do soundcheck, and he walked in the door seconds after I had passed it.  We hung out upstairs for a little bit and then we were told they were ready for us downstairs.

Usually, acoustic cafes at this venue have an opening act but for Mat there was not one.  He mentioned how he didn’t know how many songs he was supposed to sing so he just kind of kept going and going and played a 40 minute set! (Not that anyone was complaining!)  Before a few of the songs he told the stories about how they came about, which was pretty interesting.  For example – his parents met when his father got a job in Hawaii and his mom was working as a Mermaid on a glass bottom boat.  The story of his father’s life is told in the song “Rochester” and the song “Hey Mama” is about his wife, who he met at Anthropologie.

He also talked a bit about how some of his songs have been on Grey’s Anatomy and once he didn’t pay attention to the write up of what scene the song was going to be used for and the song “Crashing Down” ended up being used in a scene with a log victim and was taken very literally as crashing down.

After his set, we got to take photos with him and chat briefly.  He was really nice to everyone and I am looking forward to seeing my picture with him! (Professional photographers took it so it will not be posted for a week or so!)

Unfortunately, the lighting in the room was VERY dark so I only got a few decent photos when I finally decided to bite the bullet and use my flash for the sake of the blog and the scrapbook!

Hanson Members Only Event May 14, 2011

Saturday night was Hanson’s Members Only Event in Tulsa, OK. It was being held at Cain’s Ballroom, but it was seated and a small crowd to keep things intimate. Rather than playing on the stage, the band was playing on the floor and there were several rows of chairs and then some risers in the back.

I was lucky enough to get a front row spot – which at first I was excited about, but then I realized just how intimate the whole thing was and it was kind of awkward haha. But I enjoyed myself just the same. (Actually, I think the awkwardness came from the fact that it was being FILMED)

We were right in front of Zac’s drums, so I was pretty excited… and then they walked out and Taylor sat at the drums and Zac went to the piano. They tricked us like this once before too… they had some technical difficulties right at the start, the “robot” that goes “click, click, click” was not working and they said how usually to kill time they sing someone happy birthday – so they sang happy birthday to whoevers birthday it was. Then they sang the Stevie Wonder happy birthday song. Then Zac sang some of Jimmy Crack Corn and I kept asking my friend Keena “do these songs count for the setlist?” because I had a pad and paper on my lap to keep track of the songs since we were not supposed to use phones or cameras. (Although, that rule didn’t seem to be enforced)

Once they got all the technical glitches out of the way, they played for us songs from “Facing the Blank Page” which is the EP you receive for being a Hanson.net Fan Club member in 2011. The way this EP came together was interesting – they decided to live stream to the fans their writing/recording process and basically each song came together in a day!

They played Sonny Get Your Gun and then after the second song, Sunny Day, they went in to a cover of Cecelia. They also had us doing a LOT of clapping and then stomping and clapping at the same time which I could not really do. My hand eye coordination is lacking and then throwing in trying to do something with my legs too? Forget it! But I tried, and that is what matters! Then they did the rest of the EP – Time Baby Take It, Bittersweet and Get Out Of My Heart. Taylor was on the drums with Zac on the piano/guitar for 2 songs.

After the EP songs they said they went in to the vault and would play some rarer songs. Zac played guitar and they all came out around one mic to play Live Forever, which was a song on a previous Members Only CD. They took it back and did Next Train, another rare song to hear live and finished off the Members Only songs with Coming Back For More.

Then they played a few songs off their latest release – Shout it Out – Waiting For This, Thinking Bout Somethin and Give a Little. They finished out the set with The Ugly Truth from the Van Wilder 2 soundtrack and then left for a brief break before it was time for Q&A.

Nothing too interesting in the Q&A but they confirmed a US tour, South American Tour and European dates pretty much… they also said they are looking to do a 5 of 5 in Australia but would want to have Shout It Out released there around the same time and that the earliest opening they have would be January – but that would be summer in Australia so it might work out.

There was a lot of talk about what to do when you get flack for still liking Hanson and they basically said to “not give a sh*t” about it and “at least they’re not Lady GaGa!” (I cheered a lot when Zac said that) and a guy requested that they sing the National Anthem. They had mentioned they were out of practice and kind of skirted the request, but after the last question Taylor whispered something to Zac and Zac said “Taylor wants to sing the National Anthem” so they all huddled around a mic and did it. It was amazing. Their 3 part harmonies are perfect and to be that close was just… really really awesome!

After the show we went out to Denny’s to grab some dinner w/ some friends which was a lot of fun. I was being ridiculous though because I was SO tired!

Jon McLaughlin Fairfield, CT April 30, 2011

Saturday night Jon McLaughlin brought his tour to Stage One at the Fairfield Theater in Fairfield, CT.

Opening for him was Jeff LeBlanc, who I saw last month opening for Lee DeWyze. While I think Jeff’s set was similar to what he had done last time, his stories and anecdotes about his songs were a bit different and he was just as enjoyable. After the show he told me he’d be laying low working on his new record, but would be doing a big release show in NYC once it was done. Hopefully I will be able to see him again after it is released!

Jon was scheduled to come out at 8:15, but everything started late and he came on stage closer to 9pm. He played quite a set – nearly 2 hours of music and stories. It was honestly one of my favorite shows I have ever been to. Plus it didn’t hurt that the theater is one of my favorite places to see a show – it is very intimate. Now, I am going to come clean and let you know I am “cheating” a bit with this review. Jon sold a recording of the show – so I am listening as I am writing this review. Don’t be fooled and think that I can remember shows in great detail. I can’t. Unless of course I am listening to a recording of it while I am typing up the review. (The CD did not catch the last song of his set as it ran out of room. Also not included is the encore so that will be from memory!)Jon came on stage, said hello and went into the song Human. After the song he introduced himself and mentioned it was his first time in Fairfield. He explained how it was a bit of a chilled out tour and usually he is high strung, but for this tour is “so laid back” and that the tour would be ending soon. He warned that he would be playing lots of slow, sappy love songs and then went into My Girl Tonight. Before his next song, he introduced us to Bob, who was playing guitar and explained how they reworked an older song but he could never remember how it went after he started it. He thought that if he told us it would help him remember the song… Judging by the reaction that he had after he started it (laying across the piano) it seemed like he might have forgotten it again! He then went into Beating My Heart which was his single off of OK Now.Jon mentioned growing up in the 80s, he wanted to have a drum machine on one of his songs. He figured to do it on this tour to give it a bit of a band dynamic. He also thought since James Taylor had a drum machine on his record… “Well if James Taylor could do it, maybe I could do it. Again that is a ridiculous phrase, it should never be uttered out of my mouth.” He forgot about making the loop before the first show and he and Bob put it together in Garage Band. Then they decided that the loop was awful – so they did not play it! But the song Little Too Hard Little Too Fast did start out with a drum machine loop earlier in the tour. Before What I Want, Jon chatted a bit about audience participation and how a lot of artists will say that they absolutely need audience participation and it turns out that they want you to clap above your head and that no one can do that for a whole song except maybe athletes. But we needed to help him out or the song would be horrible. He taught us the chorus – “So I go do exactly what I want. You can say that I’m the one to blame. And I go to exactly what I want. And I hope you do the same.” If you’d like to try some audience participation at home – What I Want is available for FREE on Noise Trade! He also discussed his song writing process and how he basically lost all of his social skills from being holed up in his house trying to write songs and then got a “money call” from one of his friends who was telling him about a bad breakup that he had. Jon quickly found a pad and paper and took notes and ended up writing “Summer is Over” about relationships that are great in the summer but once it gets cold the whole thing just falls apart. He also spoke a bit about when he was first signed and was sent out the LA to write with other people and how he did not like it at all and it wasn’t something that he was used to. He ended up going to a friend in LA’s house and it was there he wrote Indiana which is not about a girl but rather about the music industry.Jon also mentioned a couple of his influences – Harry Connick Jr (who was so good live it made him angry) and Billy Joel. He decided that he wanted to write a Jazzy song like Harry Connick Jr and ended up with Why Im Talkin To You which also had some crowd participation. He loved Billy Joel as a kid because he wore TShirts under his blazers, while Jon’s dad wore button ups under his blazers so he felt that Billy Joel was rebelling. He covered Billy’s “Movin’ Out”

Since he had no real set list he was working off of, he had the audience yell out requests and then went into Amelia’s Missing and Beautiful Disaster. It was at this point that the 90 minute mark was hit so the recording would no longer fit on the CD. He finished his set with Industry. Of course, that was not enough for everyone in attendance who began clapping and cheering for an encore. Jon came out and again asked for requests and several people yelled out The Middle. Jon realized that he didn’t really know how it went so a few fans in the crowd yelled out the lines and eventually ended up on stage to help him out. (This is why you should always be prepared and know your favorites songs off the top of your head – you never know when they will need you to bail them out)

He finished out the night with Forever If Ever and mentioned that he’d be hanging out after the show. I was able to meet him afterwards and I asked him to please come back soon and he assured me that he would. He seemed to be really impressed with the venue, which made me happy since it is one of my favorite places to go for a show.

I picked up an extra copy of his CDs Indiana and OK Now which I will be giving away to a lucky reader soon! Stay tuned for the contest details!

Ocean Grove at Pearl Street Northampton, MA

Friday Night Ocean Grove brought their tour to Northampton, MA.  Since there was no CT date on the schedule, we decided to take a little road trip.

The opening acts were The Feel and Arrows over Athens.  Since my policy with openers is.. if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all, that is all I will say about them.

This show was only their 7th show as a band, but they have been touring together for years as the backup band for the Jonas Brothers.  They started the show with “Grab Your Coat” which was really high energy.  They only have 1 EP out right now (Little Record) so most of the songs are relatively unknown to the fans, unless you had seen them live before.  They had mentioned one of the songs they had not done at the LA or NYC shows – I want to say it was “You’re The One”, they said they were saving it for the real tour.

They also did a great cover of Adele’s “Rollin in the Deep”  that seems to be the song to cover lately – and it is a lot of fun to sing along to!

I was having a really tough time keeping track of the setlist, since most of these songs are relatively unknown and very few did they mention the name of it beforehand.  I was trying to cross-reference with the setlist that the venue had posted from the NYC show, but I wasn’t doing so well. (And my phone was on the verge of dying) Then once the show ended I realized that we were leaning up against the sound board pretty much all night – and the guy running it MUST have had a setlist.  Everyone around me left so I turned around and asked the guy “Do you have a setlist?” and he handed me it!  I thanked him and was pretty excited that I would not need to go home and spend hours trying to figure out which song was which haha.

After the show was over, the band hung around to meet anyone who wanted to meet them after the show.  I am REALLY awkward in these kind of things because I never know what to say.  Jack was first and I had them all sign the setlist.  Then it was Ryan, John, and Greg.  I opted not to get a photo with them because the room it was being held in was SUPER dark and when that happens the flashes tend to make me blink… so I didn’t even want to bother if I knew that I’d have my eyes closed!

They said that they will be touring again over the summer! We are looking forward to it.

Setlist under the cut!  I will post photos later on this weekend or next week – if they came out ok.  I spent a LONG time trying all the settings on my camera because not much was coming out.  So if anything is even halfway decent I’ll share.

Ricky Martin Musica Almo Sexo Tour Uncasville, CT

Last night Ricky Martin brought his Musica Almo Sexo Tour to the Mohegan Sun Arena. Last minute, I decided to go as a gift to myself for getting my Alexa ranking under 1 million.

Tickets said the show was set to start at 7, so I made sure to get in line to be let in at 6pm because Get Glue has a special sticker just for those attending Ricky’s concert and I wanted to make sure I figured out how to get it! I quickly found a banner which had a QR code on it and I was instructed to scan it and check in to get the sticker. I scanned it, but wasn’t awarded a sticker… (I have contacted Get Glue Support to see what is going on!)

Ricky had no opener and didn’t take the stage until closer to 8pm. I am not sure if the set list I got is 100% correct – I found it on a website before I went and checked it now and then and it seemed to be accurate, but I am not totally familiar with all of Ricky’s stuff. (And I don’t speak or understand much spanish)

The stage had 2 cat walks that went up into sections 14 and 26. (Which is probably why there were no last minute tickets in that section – I was in the back in section 22.) The main stage had a big metal tic-tac-toe board set up. The show started with Ricky in the middle spot and then after a song or two he fell from the spot into his dancer’s arms who were waiting for him on the stage.

The show was a lot of fun (though I wouldn’t recommend it for anyone who is bothered by strobe lights – the lights were really intense at points) and a great mix of some of Ricky’s more up beat singles and slower songs. I also liked how during 2 of the breaks we got to know a little bit more about one of Ricky’s dancers and musicians.

I had a lot of fun and was wanting to see Ricky since 1999, so I am glad that I finally got the chance. He puts on a great show and so obviously loves what he does – he has a smile on his face nearly the whole show!
