Oil & Water is the latest release from past Idol winner Lee DeWyze.  Lee was never one of my favorites, but I have been following him a bit since Idol and have gone to see him in concert a few times and he always puts on a good show.  People was streaming his latest release on their site so I figured I would check it out.  I was surprised to see that the entire album was only about 30 minutes.  The songs are very mellow which is good for sometimes when I am looking to relax, but don’t really work for me for every day listening (usually when I am in the car and don’t want to be falling asleep!)  There were really no songs on it that I felt should be skipped, but it is definitely something I have to be in the right mood to listen to.

American Idol: Top 5

IdolThoughts

I couldn’t watch this weeks episode “live” because I was at the Experience Hendrix concert (more on that tomorrow.)  When I got home I quickly watched Adam’s performance and fast forwarded to see who went home. Finally my prediction / wish came true and Tristan went home.

Song #1 –

Trent – Counting Stars – Not sure about this song choice for him. I didn’t like it at all.

Dalton – Numb – another poor song choice. America picked these? America, you’re fired! I also really don’t like Linkin Park… at all.

LaPorsha – Ready For Love – Oh so she gets a good song pick? I see how it is.

MacKenzie – Wild World – Another questionable song choice and performance I was not digging. So glad they all get a second song!

Bottom 2 –  Since they had 2 songs performed they get to choose which one they want to sing to try for the judges save.

Tristan – Independence Day – This performance fell flat for me. No surprise she’s my pick to go home.

Sonika – Let It Go – So sick of this song but her performance was pretty good.

Song #2

Dalton – The Sound of Silence – Much better than song #1!

(Didn’t they just use the final save? Why did Harry say it hasn’t happened yet tonight?)

MacKenzie – Billie Jean – Hard to do this one after David Cook’s rendition… Definitely not the best I’d ever seen. (Biased?)

Trent – Simple Man – Liked this one way better than his first. So, so glad they had song #2.

Sonika – Clarity – I thought her other performance was better, but she was singing for her life then.

LaPorsha – No More Drama – Oh another perfect song choice for LaPorsha – and the pimp spot? I still don’t think she’ll be making it to the finale.

I think Sonika will be going home next. Too much time spent in the bottom.  But then it will be hard to pick who goes next from the 4 left.

Friday Kris Allen released his 5th studio album (has it really been that many already!?) Letting You In. I preordered it on iTunes and not with an album package like I usually did and then had to wait all day Friday to get home from work to listen!  A few songs were released early so I had listened to a few several times before the whole album came out. It is easy to listen to this on loop and not get sick of any of the songs.  I think that my favorite song on the album is Move and I am looking forward to seeing him on tour a couple of times next month!

Idol Top 6

IdolThoughts

I have obviously been slacking with paying attention to how many are going home each week because I was surprised again to find out it was another double elimination.  Last week I predicted that Lee would go home.  When the episode started I scrambled to pick a second and decided that while I wanted it to be Tristan, somehow she is still making it through and it would be more likely that Avalon would go again.  If she is in the bottom 3 again, I can’t see the judges “saving” her again and I’m not sure why she was even in the bottom last week but I guess America didn’t love her like I love her.

The show opened with duets, this time between two of the current contestants. I was pretty excited for all the pairings but 3/4 performances fell flat for me.  I liked that Trent was back to making his faces when he sang and I thought that the pairing of Trent and LaPorsha would have been amazing but I don’t think the song choice (See You Again) was a good one.  Sonika and Avalon did Rise Up which I was not familiar with but I thought they did a pretty good performance, though nothing amazing. MacKenzie and Dalton doing I Want It That Way was obviously my favorite and it was fun to see the two of them together since they are so different style wise.  (PS Harry – pretty much no boyband lyrics make sense and they;re also rarely even grammatically correct so don’t go trying to figure out what the song means)  The performance of Lee and Tristan made me think and hope they might end up the two to go home… I love I Dont Wanna Miss A Thing but I don’t know, their rendition did nothing for me.

Then it was time for the solo performances which seemed to be Beatles Night! Ok maybe not, but 3 performances out of 8 was kind of a bit much.

LaPorsha – Come Together – I liked the change of song style and I think she did awesome!

MacKenzie – You Are So Beautiful – nice to see him w/o a guitar for a change. and just focus on his singing.

Trent – Stand By Me – its hard to critique him. It was good.

Tristan – A Broken Wing – welp. there goes one of my picks. I think I just don’t like country.

Dalton – Eleanor Rigby – still my fave.

Bottom 3: Sonika, Lee, Avalon

Avalon – PYT – I liked her performance and do hope she sticks around again

Lee – Let It Be – didn’t like this at all.

Sonika – I Have Nothing – This was good and I worry my girl Avalon may be going home…

Well, there goes one of my top 4. Such a bummer because I loved Avalon and her voice and her not wanting to change who she was for the show.  Hopefully she will be able to have a career after the show!

As far as next week.. I am sticking with Tristan as going home. Maybe if I say it enough, it will someday come true.

David Cook at The Warehouse

Sunday night David Cook played The Warehouse in Fairfield, CT.  Originally he was scheduled to play Stage One, but after multiple changes in the set up for the show he ended up at the larger, newer venue which I had not yet been to.  Opening up for the evening was one of my favorites, Tony Lucca! Tony did a Periscope of his show which I tried to watch Monday night but it expired about 5 seconds in on me because it was 24 hours old.  Need to keep that in mind for next time I want to use a periscope to figure out a setlist.  I did remember a few of his songs and they are listed at the end of the post. (If anyone was there or saw the periscope and knows the rest let me know what I’m missing!)

Funny story – the girl behind me was going on and on about how much she loves David Cook and he is her favorite ever and she is his #1 fan and whyyyy must there be an opening act!?  I was texting with my friend and told her “she’ll like him” before he hit the stage because we knew Tony would for sure win her over… so I wasn’t at ALL surprised when his set ended and he walked off the stage and she said… “I think I’m in love.”

David took the stage at about 9pm and played just over an hour set.  It was pretty similar set to when I saw him in November.  He thanked the crowd a lot, since we had bought so many tickets they had to move him to the bigger room and he was very thankful about that.  Before he did Declaration he went to intro the song and said “This is a song about something.”  Well, I guess that is true.  There was also a group of Hard Rock VIPs in the seats in front of me and when he checked in on them they said they wanted a personal song and for him to come in front of them and play.  He came over and did a bit of the riff from “Sweet Home Alabama” and then went back to the mic and did some of 500 miles. (Is that the name of that song? I don’t think so.)  Later on people were yelling things out and he thought they yelled for Freebird so he did a little bit of it and said that was all of the song he knew.  But people were yelling out about their birthday so he had everyone who was having a birthday raise their hand and then said happy birthday to them all.

The encore was 4 songs – including his new single Broken Windows and he was saying how whatever radio station we listen to, whether they play his style of music or not, we should call and request the song.  Even if they only do traffic, all day.  Or even if it is a sports talk radio that only talks about minor league lacrosse games. We should call and tell them we want to hear Dave Cook’s new song.

After the show I hung around to chat with Tony for a bit – since he had mentioned singing a song on Parenthood and he had actually canceled his show at the smaller next door venue in order to do it.  He had said the dressing room reminded him that he had played there before and I said that yes it was years ago! Somehow I always manage to make him feel super old I am pretty sure…

American Idol Top 8

IdolThoughts

I guess I was not paying attention and did not realize that this week would be a DOUBLE elimination.  Of course I kind of picked 2 I wanted to/thought would go home after last week anyway – Gianna and Tristan.  In no particular order, 7 of the Top 8 sang.  Then it would be revealed who would be in the Bottom 3.  They would all also sing and the judges would decide who of the 3 would finish out the Top 8 singers.

Dalton was up first – and of course did another great song, this time Radioactive.  Based on the audience screams, I think he will be around a while.

Lee did Use Somebody, which was supposedly out of his comfort zone, but I didn’t really think it was that far off from what he usually does. I’d have loved to see him do something out of left field – like rework Mariah Carey or something like David Cook would have done.  He could still make it his style but it would be a bit “shocking”

Sonika did Kelly’s Since U Been Gone which is my least fave song, maybe ever.  I thought she started off too soft and I didn’t think this was her best at all, but it will be hard for her to top last week’s performance, I think.

MacKenzie did what I wanted Lee to do – a reworked Whitney song that fits his style.  I really wanted to like it, but the background vocals were coming out stronger than his at time which I didn’t like.

LaPorsha did Beyonce’s Halo – Another strong performance.  Is there really even anything to say about her?

Trent did When A Man Loves a Woman, I don’t like that they made him try to stop doing his faces! I loved the faces and they really made him, him.  Hopefully they come back!

Well, my pick of Tristan was wrong.  And I’m kind of glad because this week she did an AWESOME performance! Much, much better than last week

Bottom 3 – Olivia, Avalon, Gianna

Avalon – Earned It – No idea why she is in the bottom. LOVE HER! Hope she makes it through

Olivia – Trouble – I wasn’t a fan of this performance.

Gianna – If I Aint Got You – please go home.

Very pleased with the results. I was surprised when Olivia had gotten fast tracked to the Top 10 anyway. and I’ve obviously wanted Gianna to go home since Day 1.

My prediction is that Lee will go home.

Adam Lambert – The Original High Tour – Grand Theater at Foxwoods

Friday night Adam Lambert brought his “The Original High” tour to the Grand Theater at Foxwoods.  I once again won tickets so I had no idea where my seats would be prior to the show.  We ended up in Mezzanine Right, which was not really a bad spot.  Opening the show was Glee cast member Alex Newell.  He came out in a beautiful fur coat that was blue/red/purple that I really liked.  He did about 5 or 6 songs and had everyone yell “YAAAAAAS” a few times and even told us we were “basic” when our cheers for Adam were not up to his standards.  A fun opening set, for sure.

Then it was time for Adam.  Since I’m not a huge Adam fan, I don’t really know most of his newer stuff or anything that isn’t on the radio, really.  But I was pleased that his set was a mixture of new and old so I was able to sing along with about half the songs.  Adam puts on a really great show. He took some time to interact with the crowd and then said he would stop talking and sing since that’s what we had paid for.  He questioned why there were 17 cameras in the front row all recording the same thing and that the whole show was probably already on YouTube.  He also mentioned that one of the fans out in the audience was very creative and had asked her something about the Flintstones but then said “Oh, that’s my shirt”  I wish I knew more of what he was talking about!

He had 3-4 costume changes throughout the night but I think my favorite were the boots that he was wearing for the first part of the set.  They looked like they were really sparkly.

The setlist for this show was a bit different than the previous shows. I had checked early on and saw he was doing “Another One Bites The Dust” as the encore, but it was near the end of the main set for my show. Fortunately even though I had decided to go based on the earlier sets and not keep track myself, someone had kept track and had it posted on setlist.fm by the time I got home!

Idol Thoughts Top 10

IdolThoughts

This week I probably should have done 2 separate posts since it was narrowing down 14 to 10 and then the top 10 performed but oh well. It’s my blog and I’ll write/schedule how I want to.

Wednesday night we found out that 4 of the contestants would get a “fast pass” to the Top 10.   Quickly, I tried to pick who my 4 would have been – and got Avalon, Trent and La Porsha picked… when Dalton made it through. “YAY! He’s my favorite but I forgot about him” I said.  My Mom who was watching with me had to laugh.  I had 3/4 (if you count that I would have picked Dalton if I hadn’t forgotten about him) right.

We got 10 performances from the remaining Idols but only 6 of them would be making it through to the Top 10. The final Top 10.l (So sad.)

I kind of phoned in my critiques so I won’t bother writing about everyone… But in brief-  I didn’t think Manny’s performance was strong enough and thought that he might be going home, I didn’t like Gianna and wanted her to go home, I wasn’t a fan of Thomas’ hiccups and thought he might be in danger of going home. I wanted Jenn and her crazy eyebrows to go home and was so over Jeneve.  MacKenzie won me over (again) because I liked him on The Voice but didn’t like that he’s now on Idol.  I guess I’m over that, or maybe I’ll bring it up every week.  We’ll see!

In the commercial break we got to see the Progressive Boy Band commercial which I loooove and laughed so hard after watching it the first time.

My picks to go home were: Gianna, Jenn, Jeneve, and Manny or Thomas.

Of course America seems to like “my mommy got me this far” Gianna, so she made it through but my other 4 all went home.

Tristan, Sonika, Gianna, MacKenzie, Avalon and Lee all join the Top 10.

Thursday night it was time for the Top 10 to perform.  Again I kind of phoned it in on my critiques –

Olivia – Unconditionally – Im torn on if I like her or not, I did earlier, but was surprised she fast passed to the top 10. I think she’ll be sticking around and I hope she will grow on me

Gianna – Listen – I dont think shes that good. Do I sound like a broken record yet?

Lee – Skinny love – Like Lee.. didn’t like this song choice

Avalon  – Stitches – love this song. liked this performance

Dalton – hey there delilah  – this is a weird song choice. sing more nsync.

Tristan – Nothin’ Like You – Dont know the original but didnt really like this

Mackenzie – I See Fire – would have liked something more up beat… the boys are putting me to sleep tonight!

LaPorsha – diamond – love her. so good. soo good.

Sonika – bring me to life – again with the breathing… someone has to help her with that. Tough going on after laporsha but that was really good

Trent – like i can  – probably my least fave performance from him…

going home… gianna (haha), more likely tristan

I loved that Kelly Clarkson was back to be a judge.  She is just the best.  Her performance of Piece By Piece was pretty amazing as well.  I also predicted a Dalton / MacKenzie finale with LaPorsha having a shocking Jennifer Hudson-esque elimination.  Probably way too soon to tell and I’ll probably change my mind 100 more times before we reach the finale…

Storyteller is the fifth studio album from American Idol winner Carrie Underwood. It was released in October of 2015. This album comes across as more “country” than some of her other tracks, at least to me.  The album has been doing really well on the charts and got Carrie some records – She is the only country artist in history to have all of her studio albums debut at number 1 or 2! She is also the only artist to score six consecutive number one albums on the Top Country Albums chart.

The album kicks off with a great track – Renegade Runaway and the others all follow suit.  I think that my favorite tracks are Renegade Runaway and surprisingly enough, Choctaw County Affair which is probably one of the more ‘country’ tracks on the album… There have been 2 singles released off the album so far, Smoke Break, which I’m not really all that fond of and Heartbeat which is featured on the album with 2 different versions – one as a bonus track.

Idol Thoughts -Top 24 Week 2

IdolThoughts

This past week we got to see the second half of American Idol’s Top 24 perform. Same as previous, Wednesday night was a solo performance and Thursday night 6 former Idol contestants came back to do duets – David Cook, Chris Daughtry, Jordin Sparks, Kellie Pickler, Constantine Maroulis and Haley Reinhart.  Once again I was excited for the duets because David, Jordin and Haley are just a few of my favorite idols. (Although Chris and Constantine are probably a few of my least favorites.) While the previous week had all winners except 1, this week was only 2 winners.

Once again the duet songs were based on songs that the past idols had done on the show or released as singles.  It seemed that the current contestants had to pick from that as their criteria.

Some thoughts… based on Wednesday night’s order.

Shelbie Z kicked off the show – I thought that she was a front runner in the competition early on, but I was not really a fan of her solo performance OR her duet – which we blamed on Constantine.  I thought Shelbie would be safe.

I thought that Manny’s take on Adventure of a Lifetime was too current of a song to try and do.  I find that I like performances better when I haven’t heard the original 18 times just that morning.  I want to like Manny but there is just something about him I don’t like.  His performance of No Air with Jordin was awesome though and I figured he would be safe after that, even though I was teetering on sending him home after his solo performance.

Kory Wheeler gives me creepy vibes.  He also did a relatively current song, James Bay Let It Go – which I actually just really fell in love with this week post-Grammys so that was working against him.  Haley’s duet with him was really awesome, though probably due to Haley being really awesome.  I didn’t have him as making it through.

Amelia went with something a little less recent, Wake Me Up, I thought her solo performance was awkward at points because she was just standing there.  Something also seemed off about her performance.  Her performance with Kellie was decent, but I don’t think she will make it to the Top 14.

Jenn did another current song in Justin Bieber’s Sorry.  If I heard Coldplay’s song 18 times this morning then I heard Justin Bieber’s 28 times.  This song is stuck in my head constantly, so any sway from the original was going to be off to me.  I was not a fan of her performance at all. I also thought her duet with Constantine was horrible.  I am trying not to let me bias towards the idols sway my opinion of the duets, but either it is, or Constantine’s duets were just that bad. I think Jenn will be going home!

CJ Johnson did I’ll Be – which was an older song and I think he did a great rendition.  The judges thought he was out of tune, it didn’t seem that way to me, but after disliking the 3 performances before his I might have been grasping to anything that sounded somewhat decent.  He did a duet with David and something about it just didn’t click for me.  I wanted to love it, but I didn’t. But I think that CJ will be safe.

Lee Jean – I liked his performance and was hoping that the show was taking a turn for the better with 2 performances in a row.  He did his duet with Chris – my only note was “good”.  I think Lee will be safe.

I had been looking forward to Trent’s performance for weeks.  He did so amazing when he had mono that I couldn’t wait to see what he sounded like well.  He did not disappoint in his solo or his duet with Jordin.  Probably the best duet of the night.

Tristan – I don’t have any recollection of her from earlier in the competition, which I think is working against her. I thought something was off in her solo performance.  Her duet with Kellie also seemed off to me (it might have been the rushing that the judges mentioned) but it wasn’t horrible.  I did have her on my list to go home though.

I liked Adam Lasher’s performance, but the judges didn’t.  I also didn’t hate his duet with Haley, though it was a little bit stiff and awkward at times.  I want him to stay, but the judges seem to have it in for him so I’m putting him on my home list.

Dalton is my favorite. I also really liked his duet with Chris even though I don’t like Chris so that is saying a lot.  I obviously think Dalton is going through.  I also think it’s weird that JLo and I seem to have the same taste in guys / contestants (Except for her ex husband)

Finally was Olivia – did not like her rendition of Demi Lovato at all.  I was torn after that if I wanted her to stay or go.  I did enjoy her duet with David a lot more. That pushed me over the edge to keep her.

It started off where I had 3 in a row I was ready to send home, so I thought thinks would work out better for me picking 5 this week. But once again it was a pretty tough decision.  My 5 to go home: Kory, Amelia, Jenn, Tristan and Adam.  I thought that there would be no one that would make me upset if they made it through, but I changed my mind once I did see who made it through and that Jenn went instead of Shelbie.  I was 4/5 correct which was twice as good as the week before.

Now I do really get to be a judge by voting with the Top 14 so things will get interesting…
