Book Review: Emma’s Secret

Emma’s Secret is the sequel to Finding Emma which I reviewed last year. (I also reviewed Dear Jack which is a novella that goes along with the series)  After Emma is stolen by Dottie and living with her and her husband Jack for 2 years, she is returned home in Emma’s Secret.  Her mom, Megan, is finding it hard to adjust and is incredibly overprotective.  Her middle daughter, Alexis is feeling ignored and like her mother doesn’t care about her. Hannah, the oldest daughter, feels guilty about Emma’s disappearance and tries to keep an eye on Emma at all times.  Megan and Peter are still trying to mend their relationship and Megan is still having doubts on whether or not he is cheating on her with his business partner.

Peter is keeping a few secrets from Megan – he isn’t cheating but he is taking Emma to see her “Papa” at the donut shop and has asked the police to drop the retraining order.  Emma misses her Papa and Peter realizes that this is good for her in helping her move on and not be so withdrawn at home.  But he doesn’t want to tell Megan because of how she will probably react.

Meanwhile, Megan’s BFF is dating the detective who was on Emma’s case that Megan feels close to.  She didn’t even tell her about it – Megan happened to show up at her home to find them kissing which made things worse.

I think this book brought a lot of closure to the story and the characters that I had grown to love in the earlier novel. It tied up a lot of loose ends and I think it ended in the best way possible.  If you read Finding Emma then you definitely need to read Emma’s Secret to see how everything concludes.

About the Book

For two years, Megan, Peter and their two older daughters, Alexis and Hannah, dream of nothing but being reunited with the family’s youngest child, Emma, who was kidnapped just before her third birthday. When Emma is miraculously found living with an elderly couple just miles from the family’s home, they are hopeful that her return will heal the wounds her disappearance created.

But Emma is vastly different from the sunny toddler they remember. She barely remembers her parents or her older sisters. She is quiet and withdrawn, and, worst of all, longs for the very people who kidnapped her.

Megan is consumed with bitterness, while Peter works later and later nights in the company of his gorgeous business partner. And in the middle of everything, Megan’s best friend has become suddenly distant and secretive.

Then a chance encounter in town leads to a secret that changes everything again for Emma. And Peter must decide between the happiness of his youngest daughter and the trust of his family.

Action Item Dunkin Donuts Music Lounge

Monday Action Item visited the Kiss 95.7 Dunkin Donuts Music Lounge for a performance and Q&A session that was also broadcast on the internet. I was lucky enough to be 1 of 15 to win passes, although I don’t think even half the winners ended up showing up.  Oh well, they missed out on a good time!

We were brought into the lounge where the guys played 3 songs – Marching Band, Learn To Fly and Brave.  Then they did some Q&A which at times they had me cracking up.  Though only Brian and Anthony had mics, they did let Dan answer one of the questions – although Anthony had prefaced it with saying Dan doesn’t get a mic because once he starts talking he doesn’t stop.  He talked a bit about how they met up with Drake Bell and ended up crashing at his house in LA for a couple of weeks.  Of course, it ended  with Anthony confirming that is why Dan doesn’t get a mic.  They joked around a lot and I was cracking up for most of it. The things these guys come up with to say is just nuts.

After all that – we were taken in the hall to do photos with the band.  It is always great to see the guys and I was glad I was able to win my way in since I had missed Warped Tour!

Book Review: Monumental Money

This book is awesome. It is only about 77 pages but it has photos of all the money that is in circulation and the different looks to it and it also gives you some history on the currency as well. But really I just like it because it’s pictures of lots and lots of money.  There’s only 1 $1 bill design in circulation, but there are 3 for $5s, $10s and $20s, $50s and $100s. (And 1 for $2 bills)  Kind of interesting.  But that’s because they haven’t gone and made colorful $1 bills yet.

Super interesting read for anyone who likes money. And that is just about everyone now isn’t it?

I received a free e-copy of this book to review from the publisher through NetGalley. I was not otherwise compensated.

About the Book

A unique, colorful, and fascinating journey in history through U.S. paper currency from Colonial times to the present day. It gives a brief review of the history of the U.S. monetary system, covering all banknotes that have been in use, including high-denomination notes no longer in circulation. It includes all banknotes in circulation today, those withdrawn as newer designs replaced them, color photographs and brief descriptions of the people and sites depicted on each note.

Book Review: Eric Clapton Day by Day

Eric Clapton – Day By Day is another biography about Eric Clapton, but this book focuses on the early years – 1963-1982.  For the most part, each of the years represented in the book are their own chapter.  But there are also some additional chapters as well that focus a but more on recording sessions and go in to a bit more details on things.

The book is done kind of like a calendar – with summaries of some months as well as setlists from shows, dates he was on tour, etc.  It is a really fascinating compilation of details about Clapton – something that could probably easily be put together about a more modern band with the assistance of the internet and social media – but a lot of this information is not as abundant out there from the 60s-80s!  I must commend the author for all of the research, I can only imagine how much time that must have taken because the book is quite detailed! There are ad photos, tickets, etc. Kind of like a calendar mixed with a scrapbook.  So much content!

This book is volume 1 – and I am looking forward to checking out future volumes as well and perhaps even day by day of some other artists too! (Although, that might be a huge undertaking to all be done by the same author!)

About the Book

Eric Clapton, Day by Day presents Clapton’s professional life in music in a day-by-day format, giving details of which bands he joined and left, all recordings made – both released and unreleased – as well as guest appearances he made on other artists’ records, and concert tours.

Based on years of extensive research from around the globe and interviews with musicians, film directors, producers, and studio engineers, Roberty covers every detail of Clapton’s live and studio work in this detailed biography.

Volume 1 covers Clapton’s early years, offering an insight into how this artist slowly found his own musical identity. Volume 2, to be published in the fall of 2013, will continue the story, covering Clapton’s comeback after problematic years of drug and alcohol abuse, and his going on to become one of the world’s most respected and admired musicians.

With Eric Clapton’s 50th anniversary in the music business approaching in 2013, now is the perfect time for this comprehensive biography.

CD Review: Court Yard Hounds Amelita #CYHAmelita

After a few years away from the limelight and the Dixie Chicks, sisters Emily Robinson and Martie Maguire were ready to get back in the studio with the creation of Court Yard Hounds.  Amelita, out now, marks the Court Yard Hounds’ second album.  “We’re a band, not a side project. We like our sound, and we’re going to continue to do this, and share something new this time around.” Emily couldn’t be more clear about the game plan for the Court Yard Hounds the group she and her sister head up.  Containing 11 new tracks, Robinson and Maguire took a different approach with Amelita than their debut album in 2010. This album contains a new perspective, which is due in part to the time passed since Robinson’s divorce. “I’ve been freed of all of those time-heals-everything kind of things,” says Robinson. “Now, I’ve opened up to other ideas and ways of looking at life and the world. I think it’s not only a more hopeful album, but it’s more… well fun.”  The Court Yard Hounds’ new album is a clear statement of who the girls are as artists, defining their sound as a band, with soaring songs that are personal, yet familiar and widely relatable. “I love this band… the way we explore new aspects of ourselves and what we can expect from each other, both musically and as people,” says Martie. “We are close. Plus, being on the road and being in the studio is like my spa from the everyday challenges of just being a mom.”

I think my favorite song from the album is the lead track, Sunshine.  It comes across as a happy track but if you pay attention to the lyrics it is about someone who “always finds a way to bring me down when I feel fine” and puts a negative spin on everything – so they call this person “Sunshine”.  Other favorites include The World Smiles, Rock All Night, and Watch Your Step.  I never really followed the Dixie Chicks when they were big but I did know that Emily and Martie had started a new group.  I didn’t really follow or pay attention to them, but Amelita is a solid album.  After a couple of listens, there aren’t any songs that I would skip (although that may change with a few more listens) and there are a few songs that I am enjoying much, much more than I ever would have expected with a country album. (I know, I know, I have to stop saying I don’t like country one of these days!)

Tracklist:

Sunshine
Amelita
The World Smiles
Aimless Upward
Guy Like You
Rock All Night
Phoebe
Divided
Gets You Down
Watch Your Step
The Road You Take

Goodies Box June

The June 2013 Goodies.co box was an interesting mix of items.

Adobadas Chips

Enjoy an exclusive taste of potato chips with Mexican flair. They’re best sellers south of the border! Qué rico (how delicious), no?
These chips were from Lays, but kind of reminded me of pringles.  The flavor was not as strong as I was expecting, but does become a bit over powering after a handful of chips.  The packaging is unique, but it is hard to reach your hand into and we think that it led to the chips being cracked.

Honey Dijon Seaweed Crumbles

Crumbles of salty roasted seaweed with the sweet zing of honey mustard. Who knew the healthiest vegetable on the planet could taste so good?
It took a while to wrap our head around eating Seaweed.  We were sitting around and my mom went “Hey Katie! Can I try some of that seaweed?” And she was so excited about it.  My Dad started cracking up because he thought she was going to say something like “chocolate”.  Honey Dijon is one of my favorite flavors so that was definitely a great pick.  We tried it just as a snack and it had a kind of nasty after taste but agreed it would probably go better in soup or a salad but have yet to get around to trying it that way.

Mango, Pineapple, Banana, Chia & Acerola

Eat this right from the squeeze-pouch to enjoy 100% natural tropical fruit puree with chia. It’s healthy, fun and convenient!
This recommends that you eat it from the squeeze-pouch but I had the grand idea to squeeze it out.  Bad idea!  It smelled really good, tasted as good as it smelled (although the seeds in it I didn’t particularly care for) but it did not look good at all.  Next time I’ll stick to their suggestion on how to eat it!

Dream Water NightTEA Night

Enjoy a shot of this subtly citrusy Dream Water and you’ll sleep soundly tonight. Rest easy knowing it’s drug free, made with natural ingredients.
I’m a bit nervous to try this so I haven’t yet.

Highland Shortbread

Crisp, crumbly and comforting, these shortbread cookies taste of pure goodness thanks to top-notch ingredients and an age-old Scottish recipe.
Boy do I love me some Shortbread so it was no surprised that I tried these cookies FIRST!  There were 2 in the package and they were certainly delicious.  A great snack coming in at only 110 or so calories for the two, I may have to stash a box of these at work (and hope I can limit myself to only 2 a day as my snack!)

Pringles Stix Cheese

Thin, crisp and buttery breadsticks coated in cheddar cheesy goodness. Pringles Stix are rich, totally unique and fun to munch!
These are great. The rest of the family said they smelled and tasted fake, but I had no problem snacking on them! The back was also resealable which is a big plus.

@DailyRehash Yeezus Twitter Reviews

Kayne’s “Yeezus” Twitter Reviews | DAILY REHASH | Ora TV

Daily Rehash is a great site that posts some hilarious vidoes and goes over the top trends on Twitter – see above where Eric goes over some recent Hip Hop releases. Dare you not to laugh.  I’m totally out of my element with hip hop too – the only thing I know about the album releases for that day? Hanson released ANTHEM. (And Stephen Kellogg released his solo album as well)

I also didn’t realize that Kanye had an ad for Yeezus that was a remake (knock off?) of American Psycho with his sister in law’s (? Just what is Kourtney to him anyway?) husband in it.  Interesting.  Check out the Daily Rehash clip to see what I’m talking about.  They actually play both together incase you have no idea what American Psycho is. (Like me.  There are approximately 3843298320432 movies I’ve never seen and “need to”.)

Book Review: Heartbeat

This book.  I’m not sure what to say about it, exactly.  It really messed with me!  It starts with Katie and her grandmother getting in a car accident.  Obviously that hit a little close to home since I am also Katie and dealing with car accident aftermath.  Katie is very close with her grandmother and lives with her and her father.  Her father is well… not the nicest guy.

Adam is the ambulance driver who comes to the scene and takes Katie’s grandmother to the hospital after the accident.  Katie rides with him in the front seat and there is instantly a connection.  Neither can stop thinking about the other and Adam breaks all the rules by getting her number off the charts but both are too scared to really make a move due to being screwed up by the opposite sex in the past.  Katie had a bad experience at a bar and Adam’s ex broke his heart and led to him moving away across the country.

Will the two meet up again?  The chapters alternate between Katie and Adam which I thought was a nice touch and really helped you find out more about each of them.

The book is relatively short, under 200 pages and I had no problem reading it in an evening and perhaps becoming a little bit obsessed with it. (I couldn’t go to bed until I found out if their paths crossed again!)

And then it ended.  And I was not happy.  I even made nasty posts about it ending on Twitter AND Facebook which I hardly ever do (twitter, yes. Facebook, not so much.) about how I had to re-read the last couple of chapters to see if it would end the same way and I didn’t like the ending at all. I didn’t know what to think. I don’t want to say more than that.  But I did read a write up from the author on Good Reads (check it out here) and I have to say, my reaction was pretty much what the author intended so I have to say the book was a home run, a grand slam even. Even if I am not happy about it! haha

If you are looking for a quick summer read (that is set in the winter to help you feel a bit cooler!) then I definitely think you should check out Heartbeat… but don’t say I didn’t warn ya!

I received a free e-copy of this book in order to write this review. I was not otherwise compensated.

About the Book

She carries the scars of a first kiss gone terribly wrong.

He uproots his life to flee the stinging betrayal of an ex.

When trust is no longer an option, all romance is suspect.

As a young paramedic, Adam rescues people for a living but cannot save himself. Katie, just out of high school, struggles with a tortured home life she cannot escape.

Everything changes when Katie hops into the front seat of Adam’s ambulance. Overwhelmed by what they are feeling, neither possess the confidence to make the first move. They walk away from each other, full of regret.

To find her, Adam risks his future. To be with him, Katie sacrifices her security.

Little do they know, what little time they do have, is being measured by a heartbeat that is slowly dying out.

GMail Categories? Go Away!

I don’t know about you – but I’m not a big fan of the changes that happened seemingly overnight to my GMail account creating “categories” for my inbox of Primary, Social and Promotions. My inbox is a mixture of everything I’ve been emailed and I’d like to keep it that way. As I read things and no longer need them, I delete them. If I need to save them I have my own set of personalized categories where I place everything. I don’t need GMail guessing what needs to go where and essentially giving me 3 inboxes to check per email address. (I have something like 11 email addresses and while all aren’t through Google/GMail that still ends up being a LOT of clicking that I don’t really need to be doing.) This comes after a couple weeks ago they decided to no longer let me select what emails I wanted to delete and I had to go through each one individually to delete them… (I’ve since modified my settings so it is now swipe to delete and not swipe to archive)

Anyway, fed up this morning when I saw the changes I went through the settings. If you go to the Settings for your email you want to make the switch on, there is one that says “Inbox Categories” click that and then there are all sorts of check boxes – Social, Promotions, Updates and Forums. If you want categories, make sure they have a check. If you’d prefer everything be lumped in your “primary” inbox, uncheck them all so that it will default to only Primary.

This is what works on my Android (HTC One X) phone. On the web version, go to Settings once logged in and then to Inbox and you get the same check box categories to uncheck!

Product Review: Fuzzy Ink Dinosaur Shirt!

If you are looking for a dinosaur shirt, or a mustache shirt or more importantly, a dinosaur with a mustache shirt…  Let me introduce you to Fuzzy Ink!  Fuzzy Ink is dedicated to the loving production of mustache apparel. Armed with a unique sense of style and an under-appreciated sense of humor, they work frantically to bring the freshest designs to the unkempt mustache kingdom. Each shirt, from the custom stamped tag to the artwork, is designed and hand printed in their underground lair!  In addition to shirts they also sell prints of their designs as well, iphone cases and lots of other great mustache items. I know mustaches are so hot right now so if you’re into that, be sure to check out the site!

They recently sent me a dinosaur shirt to check (T-Riffic Failure) out and I love it.  It’s perfect for summer, depicting a T-Rex serving Ice Cream and of course – he has a mustache!  (And it’s a failure because he dropped the scoop of ice cream on the ground. Bummer!) The shirt is 60% Cotton / 40% Polyester and comes in a crew neck t shirt with the colors mint, gold and white printed on a storm shirt.  The shirt is very light weight and soft so it breathes easily and the ink is screen printed so it won’t deteriorate over time.  I am always paranoid with shirts with print on them, a lot of times they are printed poorly and after a wash or two it is all cracked and the shirt is basically ruined or it looks like it’s been through the war.  That is not the case with this shirt from Fuzzy Ink, the screen print is great quality and doesn’t feel heavy on the shirt like other prints.  I definitely approve.

Also worth noting is the shirt has no tag to scratch and bother you, it just has the fuzzy ink info printed on the inside back of the shirt.  Definitely a plus, nothing to be a pain in your neck (haha) and you don’t have to worry about anything sticking out of the back of your shirt, but all the information about the shirt and company is still there for you.

I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.
