David Cook at The Kate

Tuesday night, David Cook made his return to The Kate in Old Saybrook, CT. I was pretty exhausted for it being a Tuesday night after a long weekend trip, but after seeing he was added to some Pop2k shows and NOT the one in CT, I had to make the drive to see him! Opening for the evening was Jeff LeBlanc who I have seen several other times but it had been QUITE some time since the last time (2013!) He made a comment about having turned 40 to which the ladies in the crowd murmured “baby!” and I’m not sure if he had heard them or not but he followed up with it being a big number to which one of the ladies from the group said “it gets bigger!” He did a half an hour set and kept me awake which honestly is saying A LOT for how exhausted I was.

There was about a 15 minute set change and then it was time for David! I feel like he does a pretty similar set each time I see him (though while I am working on a database of my shows, setlists is something I haven’t gotten to yet to fully compare without digging into past blog posts and… tired.) and this time was no different. I’m not complaining, it includes some of my favorites!

One of the new songs in the set was ‘I’ve Said Love’ which he said was written with the intention of it being given to Keith Urban, but he said “no”. He encouraged us all to let Keith know that he made a mistake. Another one that I am pretty sure was new, and also a cover, was Whitney Houston’s I Want to Dance With Somebody that stemmed from his time on the Pop2K tour and meeting an 8 year old girl who said Whitney was her favorite and that was her favorite song – and he tried to learn it to play for her that night and failed miserably. Since then, he has figured it out. (Although he said the look she gave him when he was unable to play it for her will stay with him.)

There also was SUCH a new song in the set that it didn’t exist before the show even started. After Lie To Me he got on the topic about how that song was about all of his exes. Someone asked him what Paper Heart was about and he said that was also about an ex and someone else asked if he had any songs about his wife and he said yes there were a couple but wouldn’t say which and also noted that she wants a song with her name as the title, but he can’t come up with anything that rhymes with ‘Rachel’ to which Jeff suggested ‘bagel’. A new song was born and Rachel is getting the divorce papers drawn up as we speak đŸ˜‰

David also mentioned he’s a bit nervous to play in front of the boyband fangirls at the Pop2k shows over the weekend – but THIS boyband fangirl says you’ll do just fine and you kept her entertained and awake when she almost fell asleep in a meeting at work that afternoon… you’ll be fine.

It’s always a pleasure getting to see David – and also to see what happens during the show that gives him the giggles. This show it was a perfectly on beat sneeze at the end of Declaration. It’s also even more fun when I win the merch giveaway at the show! Go me!
