David Cook at Stage One

Thursday night I made my way to Fairfield to check out David Cook on his Bleed Me Dry tour. This was the last show of the run so things were a little slap happy and off the rails. Max Bartos was the opening act and he seemed like a lot of fun and I’d definitely see him again if I had the chance. (Turns out he just announced he’s opening for Tyler Hilton on his next tour but of course, Tyler isn’t coming here!)

I feel like David’s setlists are pretty similar from show to show and this one wasn’t all that different from what I had remembered hearing last time. However, he did end up throwing in a request that was made to him earlier in the day for “Rendezvous” – but made sure to say he was not otherwise taking any requests. His Radiohead/Taylor Swift cover mashup was new but if you know me you know I could have done without that.

As I had mentioned, David was a bit slap happy and said he had drunken Coca-Cola before the show (careful to specify coca-cola) and hadn’t had any soda at all the whole tour so it had him wired. There was a baby in the audience that kept cooing and crying at random points during the show and at first David wasn’t sure what was going on. Then he realized there was a baby and not only that but it was the baby’s birthday so he sang Happy Birthday and just kept cracking up whenever there was a perfectly time noise coming from the baby.

He also mentioned that he was doing some shows on the Pop 200 tour and that was how his Whitney Houston cover came about which led to a scream and hands thrown up in the front row from an O-Town fan (and friend of mine) to which he asked her if she was trying to start the wave – and then he ended up having us do the wave a couple of times and said if he pointed to us at any time we were to bust out the wave. The wave in the middle of a ball game? No thanks. In the middle of a David Cook concert? Yes, please.

A lot of the stories he told about songs I had heard before as well – but one of the new ones was that his brother that got him to audition for American Idol got him back from him winning and his brother not by naming his kid ‘Archie’, which he claims had nothing to do with David Archuleta and just for having alliteration amongst all of the family’s names… but we know otherwise 😉

After the show I managed to purchase the last after show selfie with David, which I wasn’t sure if I was going to or not because I had an early flight out the next morning and wanted to try and get some sleep… but he came out pretty quickly and I was in the first group to get to say a quick hello. David’s new EP is out now so be sure to check it out!
