Platinum Hit

Platinum Hit is the latest Music related reality television show.  It is a song writing competition looking to find the next great hit maker.  The winner receives $100,000 (cash!), a publishing deal with Sony, BMI Songwriters The Writing Camp and a recording deal with RCA/Jive.

The show is hosted by Jewel, who also is one of the judges.  Joining her is former American Idol judge Kara DioGuardi.  Keith Naftaly (SVP of A&R for RCA/Jive) also judges and throughout the series they will be bringing in guest judges to help with the competition.

The show premiered on Monday at 10/9c.  Aside from Kara, there are also a couple of other American Idol connections – one of the 12 contestants is Jackie Tohn, who was on Season 8 of the show.  Scotty Granger is also a contestant and he is currently the Creative Director for American Idol winner Jordin Sparks!

The first competition on Monday was to write a hook about Los Angeles.  It was interesting to see how completely different each of the 12 hooks were.  Kara and Jewel announced the Top 4 hooks and their prize was that they got to choose their team of fellow contestants to help turn their hook into a song.  I didn’t agree with all 4 of the choices – but then again Jewel and Kara write awesome songs and I do not so I probably should trust their judgement.

The teams of 3 then had 8 hours to write the full song and then they had to perform it in front of the judges. (Jermaine Dupri was a guest judge)  The teams were split between the top 2 and bottom 2.  The top 2 were safe and the absolute bottom team was going to lose a member.

I think Platinum Hit is a pretty interesting show and will continue to check it out.  I do find it hard to keep up with which contestants are which though because as of right now we haven’t gotten too much background about each of them.

If you missed the first episode – my cable company has it offered on Free On Demand – so if your cable company offers something similar, check for it there.  Otherwise, look for reruns of it airing on Bravo!

Songs from the show are available for purchase on iTunes and you can find out more about the show at http://www.bravotv.com/platinum-hit/season-1

NBC – The Voice

Last night, The Voice premiered on NBC, finally! If any of you watch NBC even semi regularly, I am sure you are all well aware of the fact that this show would be starting up since they played commercials for it constantly!
For those of you who aren’t familiar with the show, there are 4 coaches and contestants have a “blind audition.”  The coaches have their backs to the contestants so what they look like or are wearing doesn’t have anything to do with if they are picked or not – it is strictly on their voice.  The coaches (not judges!) are Adam Levine of Maroon 5, Cee Lo Green, Christina Aguilera and Blake Shelton. They will each have a team of 8 singers. If the coach likes what they hear, they hit a button and their chair turns around.  If only one coach turns around, then the singer is automatically added to their team.  If more than one coach turns around, then the contestant gets to choose which team they would like to be on.  It is fun to see the coaches interact and tease each other when trying to get contestants to choose them.
I am not really familiar with Blake (he’s country, so that explains it) but I love Adam, Cee Lo and Christina.  That is what first made me want to watch the show, but I am actually enjoying it. I wasn’t sure it would live up to all the hype – I swear there was a commercial for it every commercial break during any NBC show I watched for the past week.  (Not to mention during The Biggest Loser there was an icon of “The Voice in 59 minutes!” in the corner of the screen.)
Frenchie Davis who was kicked off of American Idol for being a lingerie model auditioned and is on Christina’s team, so I am really excited to see her again and I hope she does well.  Some have been mocking saying that “her sob story is American Idol” but I didn’t think what Idol did to her was fair at all so I am glad to see she is getting a second chance of sorts.
I also liked Javier Colon – who is from Connecticut! So he definitely gets bonus points for that, but he is a great singer as well.  Apparently he also opened for Stephen Kellogg and the Sixers, but unfortunately I did not catch any of the shows where they were together.  Bummer!
I am still not entirely sure how these teams are going to work, and the previews said that once they have their teams they have to cut them down to only 4 contestants… so it will be interesting to see how it all will play out.

Nate Berkus Taping

Yesterday our episode of Nate Berkus aired so I decided I would talk about it in a bit more details…

At 1pm we were checked in and given numbered tickets.  The numbers meant nothing, it was just a way to count us so that the staff knew when to cut off the line.  We were # 8 and 9.

Then we got our purses checked, got wanded, and went down 2 sets of stairs.  There were 2 holding rooms – N and B.  The first group through was in room B, but room N was actually seated first.  (N for Nate and B for Berkus)

Days of Our Lives was on in the holding room, and we got to see pretty much the entire episode, as well as some of Real Housewives of Atlanta.  Then we were told we’d be brought into the studio.  We went through the other holding room and then were crammed into an elevator.

Then it was time to enter the studio!  Most of the good seats were already taken and that’s when we were put in the side corner.  There’s the seats right up in front, stadium seating in the back and then benches on the side.  They are really not comfortable seats either.

Dena Blizzard came out to warm us up – she is great.  I left loving her more than Nate lol.  She went through a bit about how the taping worked and then we had to record reaction shots.  I am SO not an actress because I can not laugh as if something is completely hilarious if nothing was said or done. At all.  But I tried.

Then Nate came out and did Q&A; with the audience – he answered 3 questions. Then he came out for the open of the show and we gave him a standing ovation and had to act all excited as if it was the first time we saw Nate. (Reverse these parts and get genuine really excited reactions lol)

The first segment was about LonnyMagazine and a couple of people who redid their apartments in NYC on a budget and made them look cool.  Then there were the top 5 decorating items under $50.  Which had to be filmed a few times…

Then they did a segment about how the runway and home fashion are coming together and things you see on the runway also work in your home – flowers, nautical themes and military.

Then he surprised a fan of the show by offering advice on her kitchen and he said in exchange for the clock she had on the wall, he’d send the stuff she needed to re-do it.

He did some promos for a contest going on in Nevada. It seemed like he was reading forever and at the end he went something like pffffttt because it was just SO much to say at once and it was like he never took a breath.  Then he told them go to to a website, which was mentioning “Reno” as in, Reno, NV but he pronounced it as if it was short for “Renovation” and then was like “ohhhhhh” and had to do it again.

Nate also didn’t seem to be too big of a fan of his sweater and asked if anyone saw SNL and said he needed baby spanx.  He said he was a the taping of SNL and had laughed so hard at that he was crying. I barely remember it from SNL so I guess it didn’t strike me as funny lol

The next segment was in front of us – and was about a fan who re-decorated her house.  She was there and was a really big fan and when there was technical difficulties they went and sat down and she said something like “I can’t stop looking at you, you are so handsome” lol  The audio for her clip wasn’t playing in the studio, so they skipped that and filmed the end of the show- where we once again gave Nate a standing ovation.

Then they re-did the house proud segment with sound so we could see the clip.  We were told at first they’d be doing 7 segments, but then Nate waved and left and that was it!  (When the show aired they showed him redoing the house of a couple.  The wife had given the husband a kidney because he needed a transplant.  Kind of ironic that we WEREN’T there for that being taped because my mom gave my dad a kidney when he needed a transplant and we for sure would have made that known!)

Honestly I wasn’t all that impressed with it – and I usually LOVE that type of stuff.  Seeing the equipment and behind the scenes and all that.  But it did help me cross off part of a life list item to see all the shows they film in NYC.  (Something I will probably never ever complete as they are constantly changing what is filming there!)

We also didn’t get any sort of giveaway, which I kind of expected, but it was disappointing to come home and watch an episode on TV the next day where he gave everyone in the audience $200 🙁   I’ve also been getting emails asking me to come back almost every day he films now.  If he starts giving things away, even if it isn’t anything too major or expensive, then people might be more inclined to see a taping!  (And if the ones they were giving me tickets too weren’t all at 8:15, I’d go back! But that is far too early of a train for me and I like my sleep!)

Our episode aired 2 weeks to the day after we went to the taping, but it might have just been a coincidence.

Nate Berkus Show / NYC trip

My mom and I went to the Nate Berkus show taping today.  I’m not sure how much I can say but I will refrain from talking about the topics on the show until the show airs. (Probably in a few weeks – though I will probably type it up and save it now so I don’t forget stuff lol)  But here is a bit about our day:

First, we had an issue at the train station.  We were going up the ramp, slowly, and this woman went running past and said she needed a ticket.  Well, so did we… She ended up getting to the cash ticket machine before us so we were forced to use the credit card machine and therefore I got no change of Presidential Dollars 🙁  My brother and I are collecting these and thought it would have been nice to have a few more to possibly add to the collection. Ah well, we all made the train with plenty of time to spare.

We got to Grand Central and killed some time – I checked in and got the Historian badge on Foursquare!  Then we got a cab and headed to the studios.  We went by Pee Wee’s theater and I got the Pee Wee Badge too!

We ended up at the studio at about 11 and wouldn’t be checked in until 1.  They said tickets didn’t guarantee admission, so we wanted to make sure we were there with time to spare.  We were #8 and 9 in line.  Don’t let the line fool you though – just because you were there first, doesn’t mean you’ll get prime seating! We were in the back corner :/  I figured we wouldn’t be let in in the same order we arrived in but sheesh the side seating is really limited views! We could really only see Nate for one segment, which was filmed right in front of us.  There were lots of monitors around though.

The audience is mainly middle aged women who want to marry Nate.  lol I thought I was the youngest person there, but then a few girls maybe around my age ended up getting seated next to me.  The studio holds about 200 people.  His warm-up comedian is GREAT.  She did a segment on his show a couple days ago that I thought was hilarious (choosing a date by looking at the guy’s bedrooms!) and when I saw she was there I was psyched.  You get rewarded if you steal. I’m not giving any more information about this but my mom and I did not steal and therefore were not rewarded. (With an item I am kind of obsessed with lol)

Filming took about 2 hours – I don’t remember exactly when it started but we were there from about 3-5.  No gifts, but I don’t think he’s really given much stuff out.  He gave a can of paint one day though and that’s when I decided we needed to go. lol  We went to the Hudson Eatery across the street after – we were the only ones there and the prices were reasonable and the food was good!

Then we took a cab down to 5th avenue.  We were dropped off at a store with postcards so I got 10. Five for a dollar is a good deal lol  I probably should have even gotten more, since a few are for me to keep.  Next stop was Build A Bear and I picked up the David Wright jersey that they don’t sell in Connecticut (even though they sell the damn Yankees ones… but that’s a rant for another day!)

Next up was my new favorite store, Little Miss Matched.  They sell mis-matched socks! Since I wear a brace on one leg that goes up to almost my knee, I wear a knee high sock on one foot and a regular sock on the other.  So I picked up 6 fun new knee highs – and they have no matches!

The we stopped at B&N; because I had a gift card and picked up a case for my Nook.  There is a journal I wanted but they didn’t have it there 🙁  And then I saw Apolo was going to be there tomorrow 🙁  I want to see him but I don’t think I’m going to be able to pull it off because he is in CT the same night as I am going to see Let’s Make a Deal.

Then it was time to kill more time at Grand Central before finally boarding our train home! None of the doors were opened though and the tunnel was HOT.  Then we saw one door at the waay end was open so we had to go through that one and then in between every train car (and dang those doors are heavy). We went all the way to the second to the last car too lol  When I wonder why my arms hurt tomorrow – remind me its from opening huge doors on trains.

I got a pretty good picture (at least on the camera screen) of the Empire State Building, so I’ll try to post that at some point – OH and Nate show let us keep our ticket so I might post that too 😉

Jimmy Fallon 4/26

Marisa, Lauren and I made it to check in for the Fallon show with just minutes to spare. We were group Y.

On the way to check in we spotted NBCs Sue Simmons who said 'the mets are on a roll' to me after waving hahaha (I had on my new Francoeur shirt)

A little before 5 we were escorted into the studio and we were 3 or 4 rows back. The warm up guy had us cracking up and then The Roots came out to play for us. They are great.

The guests were Kathie Lee Gifford, Brian Posehn and Gogol Bordello.

We didn't think Kathie Lee would be all that great, but she was really the game she played with Jimmy had us in stitches.

Brian was pretty funny too – I guess he is on Sarah Silverman's show? But I remember him from Just Shoot Me.

Gogol Bordello was interesting. The lead singer reminded me of Borat lol and the band consisted of a TON of instruments! Even an accordian! The fans in the band bench were rocking out and the performance was really high energy!

After the show Jimmy ran through the aisles and slapped hands with Lauren!

When we left we got what we were told was a $10 Subway card. When we got to subway it only had $5 but it was enough for Jimmy to have paid for our dinner 😉

Then we made our way over to gramercy theater (not before getting stopped and being told I didn't look 21 by a guy trying to get me to sponsor a child – I already have and love Moses thank you very much!) For hanson's first of 5 shows – more on that to come later – need to change my bb's battery!

Rachael Ray Show 11/7/08

Yesterday I took the 6:33 train into the city, met up with Lauren, and then we headed up to Rachael Ray’s studio. (Luckily, just a couple of blocks from Grand Central Station)

We waited for a couple of hours and got tickets #67 and 68. We finally made our way inside and found out that the colors that were highlighted on our ticket meant the order that we would go in. Blue was first, followed by Pink and then Yellow. Of course, we were Yellow, but at least we would be getting in the studio!

Once we got in, everything was so tiny. There was the kitchen set, couch with the TV, the larger couch where she sometimes interviews guests, and another set was set up with lots of groceries.

RC Smith was our warmup comedian – who had some audience members guessing the song or artist that the sound guy was playing to win a November issue of Rachaels magazine. He seemed to think that everyone from Pennsylvania was amish, but he was also a Yankee fan so really, that explained everything.

Then Rachael came out and told us that she had been up since 5:30ish and didn’t know how Diane Sawyer did it, waking up at 3am every day for Good Morning America, yet still managing to look like a movie star. The first thing she filmed was an intro to a video of her doing a cook off at NASCAR and riding in the pace car.

Next up, they were having the finals of the NY grocery bagging competition. Let me tell you that was really hard to cheer for. Especially since it took them so long to bag. After they bagged in paper, they then had to re-set and bag in plastic. While they were judging, Rachael went to the kitchen and made the chili that she had made in the NASCAR cooking competition. She couldn’t get one of her mixers to work so she was fighting with it.

After that, she did a promo about what was coming up to air during Regis and Kelly. And then recorded 3x a promo for how to switch your TV to DTV. First time she was over the time limit and then I think they did it 2 more times just to have a couple of choices.

She chatted a bit about how she was the last person she knew to get a color TV and that Nixon was her favorite president because her mom got pissed at him and threw her stiletto into the TV, thus allowing them to buy a new COLOR TV.

Then we found out the winner of the bagging competition, but you’ll have to watch on Friday the 14th to find out for yourself… the winner won a trip to St Lucia which Rachael pronounced “loo-chee-uh” and not “loo-sha” so she had to redo that take a second time, and said it wrong AGAIN so they did it a 3rd time.

Oh, and at some point they did snack of the day, which was Zebras – pecans covered in chocolate and white chocolate.

The highlight of the day was that her audience moves to her. Rather than fit a bunch of people in front of each set, so you can’t see her during some segments, the seats are on a big turn table and they turn you towards where she is, so you always have the same view of the show. (We were about 8 rows back and I think there were only 10 or 11 rows total)

After it was all over we left and got a copy of Rachael’s December issue of her magazine.

RC seemed to think it would be the most fun we’d ever have at a taping – but I’m sorry, $500 worth of stuff from the View kind of tops that list, RC. Nice try though.

Tonight is New Kids On The Block at the casino. Loved them when I was 5, but have never seen them live (though I have seen Joey and Jordan solo) so it should be interesting!
