Try It Tuesday: Making Stamps!

For the longest time I have wanted nothing more than a Hanson symbol stamp for my scrapbooking supplies.  Whenever posts come up on Hanson’s site about merchandise we’d love to see – I always said “a stamp of the symbol!”  Well, since they have yet to take my advice (I know there are more than just me who are Hanson fans and scrapbook) I decided to take matters into my own hands.  I did some research online and found out what I needed and headed out to find it.  I had intended to link to the site where I found the best tutorial (MollieMakes) but the tutorial seemed to have disappeared the day after I used it! (I guess better the day after than before!)

On etsy I purchased a stamp making kit which included 2 eraser blocks, carving tools and an ink pad. I also bought some stamp blocks (which turned out to be much too small for the initial project, but were used on additional stamps I made shortly after) I also needed some tracing paper and then I was ready to go.

Try It Tuesday: Scraplifting!

welovetotravel

“Scraplifting” is the term used when you take someone else’s scrapbook idea and “steal” it.  You may scraplift just an element, you may just get an idea from someone else’s page, or maybe you’ll just copy it completely. I have a section on my pinterest dedicated to scrapbook layouts in hopes they will give me inspiration.  This post will focus on 1 layout I “scraplifted”

How to Keep Track of Potential Scrapbook Items While On Vacation

If you’re anything like me – the best things to scrap are your vacations!  But through the course of the days you are away you can collect a lot of things – some little, some big that can easily get lost in your luggage.  On my recent trip to Vegas I tried to figure out a way that I could keep everything together while on the trip.  It wasn’t a perfect method and probably could use some improving upon for my next trip – but here’s what I did.

I decided that a 5×7 envelope should do the trick.  The mistake here was I took one that had the opening at the top as opposed to the side.  As in, the opening went across the 7 inch part and not the 5 inch part so larger brochures, maps, etc didn’t really fit in it comfortably.  Fortunately while there, we obtained a regular mailing envelope and all but one of the brochures we had picked up fit in it.  At that point you can decide to fold it or keep it sticking out to not ruin it.   Next time, I’ll probably bring an 8×10 envelope that opens on the 8 side, just to be on the safe side.

The envelope was kept on the nightstand and every night I went through my purse and took out anything I had collected throughout the day. Confetti, ticket stubs, brochures, receipts, etc because I never know what  I’m going to want to end up using.  Sometimes my friend even picked up some things along the way and “donated” them to the envelope as well.

Then when it is time to leave, grab the envelope (or in my case it became 3 envelopes) and keep it in a safe place. If you think you can fit it in your purse without it getting too banged up that’s probably best, but I have a nice flat pocket in my travel backpack that is perfect for this.  And I never check my backpack on the airplane so I know that everything will be with me at all times. (I think I’d be more upset losing potential scrapbook items than I would be if some of my clothes went missing, to be honest)

How about you – what do you do to keep track of everything? let me know in the comments!

My new favorite site – Blitsy.com

blitsy-logo-web-medium

My new favorite website is Blitsy.com (referral link) they have great craft items posted every day at great prices. So far I’ve only made 2 purchases from them but I am sure to check out everything they have posted daily.  They are currently having a referral contest. On Christmas morning they will randomly choose and order id from all orders placed between Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve.  The user that placed the order AND the person that referred them will both be awarded a new craft room! The room will include furniture you see in the Blitsy craft room set AND a $500 gift card to Blitsy to fill your room with.

I am looking to add more crafty posts to the site in 2014 – so you’ll be sure to see some of the items I’ve purchased from blitsy at work in the upcoming months!  You don’t have to just be a scrapbooker either – they have all sorts of craft supplies.  So be sure to sign up, check the site out and maybe buy something if you’re interested!

Washi Tape!

Every now and then I get in to a scrapbook supply obsession.  Currently, it is Washi Tape.  It has kind of evolved – first it was ribbon, but that can be difficult to stick to pages.  (There is a nice product out there that is an adhesive “line” which actually works great for ribbon, but I didn’t have this until more recently)  Then in 2009 I was importing decorative tapes on Etsy… and now I’m on a Washi Tape kick.

I keep getting asked – what is washi tape? And my answer is “it’s… tape”   It’s kind of like masking tape but it’s got all sorts of fantastic and wonderful designs on it, or it can be a solid color.  Just way nicer than masking tape.  It is made of paper, but it isn’t delicate. I’ve read that some washi tapes are actually stronger than duct tape!  In my research I came across that Washi is Wa – meaning Japanese and Shi – meaning paper. Makes sense.

Recently I dropped about $50 on tape on Etsy… I try to only buy tapes that I know I will get some use out of – so look for it in my Disney scrapbook pages, One Direction pages (Office Depot is actually selling sets of One Direction Washi Tape in the stores!) and Recycled Percussion – just to name a few that I have ideas for in my head with the tapes that I recently bought.  It looks like the craft stores are starting to carry more and more washi tape as well, but I have found I can find the best tape for my ideas online (for now. Michael’s was a bust when I went last week.)

Most washi tapes are also acid-free which means they are safe for scrapbooks.  I’m really not sure how to know for sure though, so I’ll have to be careful if using any directly on a photo but for borders and stripes, they work great!  (Some of my Christmas show scrapbook pages featured some holiday themed washi tape I had gotten a while back.)

I am trying to get back in to scrapbooking as well as blogging a bit more about my crafting… so this was my first attempt at that – hopefully I can come up with more topics and stick with it 🙂

and here’s a sneak peek at a future Washi Tape post – hmm washi tape and library pockets.  What will I come up with?

Scrapbooking Concerts

Mainly what I scrapbook are concerts.  It is sometimes hard to make your pages unique, which you have probably seen from some of my scrapbook posts! (Especially after 67 Hanson shows. How do you scrap something that has been scrapped so many times before?) Sometimes I get the urge to be creative, other times I just want to get the scrapping out of the way and rush a bit.

My first tip would be to either think of a layout yourself, find inspiration somewhere or look at someone else’s design and “scrap lift” it.  I subscribe to a couple of scrapbooking magazines and while a lot of times the layouts pictured are of someone’s kids, if you look at it with an open mind you can sometimes see something that will work for boys playing on stage instead of in that leaf pile in the backyard.  Inspiration can come from weird places and sometimes at the shows as I am taking photos I get ideas for layouts.  Then I just have to hope I remember them after the show!

One of my favorite websites to search is twopeasinabucket.com.  They have an extensive gallery that you can search.  Sometimes I’ll search specific things – did anyone else scrap the Jonas Brothers? And other times I will just browse to see if a layout strikes me as something that I can re-create that will work with some of the photos I have.

I also try to set guidelines.  In 2011 it was to try and only use 1 page per concert, 2 if a meet and greet was involved (that would land me with a photo with the band and/or an autograph to scrap as well).  This may lead to you being creative when you have 8 or 9 great photos you want to use, but want to stick to the 1 page limit.  Don’t be afraid to get wallet sized prints and incorporate them into the layout as a border or something similar! (Tip: Edit the images yourself in photoshop. Turn 1 4×6 photo into a photo with 4 photos in it – 9 cents to print instead of whatever the price for a wallet print is that will end up giving you 4 of the same photo)

Other staples for my concert pages are the setlist (which I always keep track of, but sometimes a google search or even a look on wikipedia will get you the setlist, especially for arena shows where the setlist never really changes) and of course the ticket.  For shows without tickets I either make a mock ticket from a raffle ticket embellishment or something similar, or I am just sure to write in the date and name of the artist.  I usually write in the opening acts as well, though I don’t always include their photos in the layouts.

One thing I should probably add more of to my layouts but don’t, is JOURNALING.  If you don’t like your handwriting, you can type it on the computer and choose a fancy font and print it on fancy paper.  If you like your handwriting but aren’t sure about writing directly on the page, you can get a font made of your handwriting and type and print it!  Yes, I have sometimes had to re-do whole layouts because I stupidly spelled something wrong or left out a letter and couldn’t squeeze it in.

Another great way to get some inspiration for colors to use is the Scrap By Color! website. (http://www.scrapbook.com/color/)  You upload a photo that you want to use for your layout and it helps you find colors that coordinate with the photo.  If you don’t have a photo, there is also a color wheel that you can use to see which colors go best together.

Obviously by looking at some of my layouts this is all easier said than done.  I do have some pages  I put a LOT of times in to and others I just kind of throw everything together. It all depends on how much time I have an how overwhelmed I am with what I have still to scrap.

Craft Corner: Beach Ball

Every now and then inspiration hits while I am at a concert for what I will do with that scrapbook layout.  For some reason, when I got back from Bamboozle I knew that I had to make the layout a beach ball.

The pictures were kept aside for quite some time while I figured out how to make a beachball.  I got out my Martha Stewart circle cutter and was oh so careful adjusting it so that I wouldn’t slice my finger open like I had done the last time I used it.  No such luck, cut my finger open again.  (The blades are WAY to sharp and it is not easy to change the size of the circle or remove the blade before adjusting. Really poor design.)

Then I cut 5 circles (after I put on a bandaid – of course!) and had my brother free hand on one of them 5 parts because I couldn’t figure out how to do it, and I used that as a template to cut each of the pieces from each color.  The circle in the middle was cut from a circle punch – much less dangerous – but it is not quite the size I wanted for proportion. But, I didn’t cut another finger in the process so that was a plus.

You’ll have to wait a couple days to see the finished product (I hope to have a 2nd 2012 scrapbook post up then!) although technically it is still not quite finished because the “ticket” was a cloth wristband and I still haven’t been able to remove the plastic connector to make it flat enough to attach and fit in a book. Someday!

This was a fun project but I wouldn’t recommend using the Martha Stewart cutter unless you have adult supervision ;)  (One of these days I’ll figure out how to use it properly – I was so excited when I saw it on Oprah I ran out and got it the next day – but have only used it a couple of times because I keep slicing fingers!)

2011 Scrap Posts

Finally I have gotten around to photographing (and finishing!) the last scrapbook pages of 2011.

Included in the mix are page for Action Item’s homecoming show in November, Honor Society in NJ, Action Item in New York in December with Ariana Grande and a trip to Mystic Seaport from December.
