Tulsa Recap – Part 2

Saturday we woke up and decided we would check out Center of the Universe which is just a cool spot in Tulsa, you stand on a circle on an overpass and talk and you hear it echo but no one else does. It’s just a fun trick.  Then we went to the Hanson gallery to see some paintings Zac did (that unfortunately were all sold out before we even got to Tulsa) and some photos Taylor had taken.  There was a group photo for sale that we did like – but it was $60 and we just couldn’t justify it. There were several paintings I would have wanted had they still been available though. Oh well! (Moral of the story is, get to Tulsa the day before the check in starts so you can be first in line for everything)

We went to Mexicali’s for lunch and then headed back down to Cain’s for Taylor’s lecture that was bumped from the day before.  He “taught” us a bit about photography and then brought fans on stage to take their photos and then he took a picture with them.  He kept saying things needed to get sped up but then kept having more and more people come on stage for photos.  The only catch was they had to wear headphones because the photos are going into an “Are You Listening” Gallery which will be added to the website.  He had things rigged so the photo went to his laptop and then to a projector so we could see the photos as they were taken.

After Taylor’s lecture was done, all 3 brothers took to the stage to deliver the “State of the Band” where they talked a bit about what their plans were for the rest of the year.  They did get boo’ed when they said it wouldn’t include a tour!  A new fanclub website is coming next month and they are working with other artists.  I’m still hoping a couple of one -off shows turn up (preferably close by!) because I am now at 99 shows so the next show is going to be #100!

Then it was time to head back outside from Cain’s and wait for the Members Only Event concert to begin! Despite things seeming to be a bit behind, the show did seem to start about when it was supposed to.  The set started out with 5 new songs from the Members Only EP – this is always a treat because for the most part the only way you are going to hear these songs is to go to the event in Tulsa.  Every now and then a couple of the songs do make it into other setlists but this is the only guarantee to hear them.  The rest of the set was a mixture of some other members only songs, some rarer songs they don’t play much and then some typical songs as well.  Overall I thought it was a really solid mixture of a setlist! The only bummer was Taylor and Isaac both did solos and Zac didn’t, but the rumor going around is that he was not feeling well.

After the show it was the after party!  This is the 3rd time we have seen Taylor do an afterparty.  The party in Hershey, PA sucked. The party in Jamaica was awesome.  So we weren’t sure where this one was going to fall on the spectrum.  Turns out, just about in the middle.  The songs weren’t as good as Jamaica but were better than PA.  It wasn’t as high energy and I could barely even look at him on the stage because the stage lights were flashing and making me tear up to look at them.  He played songs from Haim, Amy Winehouse, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Elton John, Peter Gabriel, Lorde – to name a few.  It was a mixture of older and newer songs.

Sunday we decided to sleep in a bit since it was a late night the night before.  When we woke up, the Hop Jam stage was set up right outside our hotel (though unfortunately our room was in the back of the hotel and not the front!) and we walked around to see what was going on and if we would spot any Hanson’s.  When I stopped to take a photo of the stage we got yelled at to get back inside.  And at that point – no one was even ON the stage so I’m not sure why I couldn’t stop to take a photo for a second! Sheesh.

We went back to our room but I heard soundcheck starting so we went to the lobby where we had a pretty clear view of Hanson (and of the guard who yelled at us – so we stuck our tongues out at him assuming the windows were tinted and they weren’t! haha oops) so we hung out there and watched them do a few songs and then walk down the street.

At 3pm the doors to the festival opened, we went and got in line for merch (and got everything we wanted and then some! yay!) and grabbed some food from the food trucks. Then we went in the hotel to eat and then decided to venture through the craft beer area. A lot of the stuff was already gone and they weren’t even really selling sample tickets anymore because too many people were coming back and saying things were sold out! I guess that was a good thing for those who were selling beer but not so much for anyone who wanted to try anything!

At 5pm the music started – with opening act winner Capitol Cars (woo hoo I voted for them!) but it was so hot out and no real shade, I ended up heading to the hotel after their set and never returning outside. There was no ADA section and we figured that in the hotel lobby was the safest place for me to enjoy my 99th Hanson show! Also performing at Hop Jam were Taddy Porter, Butch Walker (who I had been told was amazing and did not disappoint!), Robert Randolph and the Family band – and of course, Hanson.

After the show we walked around a bit (since I had been sitting in basically the same spot for hours and needed to stretch!) and ended up spotting all 3 Hanson’s briefly, but did not get a chance to chat with them.  Isaac was at a local bar that we did pass and considered going in to, but ultimately opted against it and went back to the hotel for snacks instead.

Jamaica Trip: Solo Shows

An addition to this years back to the island event was that each member of the band, for the first time EVER, would be performing a solo set.  I wasn’t sure how to count this since I count all my Hanson shows – but I decided to count each one as 1/3 of a show – so all 3 combined would add 1 more show to the count.

First up was Taylor. It was raining a bit during his set so I didn’t get as much video as I would like because I was fearing for my cameras being out in the elements. Fortunately it didn’t rain too hard – but it would have been ok if it did since we were able to just go back to the room and change – unlike every other time I’ve gotten soaked at a concert.

Make It Out Alive
Kiss Me When You Come Home
Weird
When You’re Gone
Be My Own
Every Word I Say
Get Up And Go

The next day was Zac, and there has been some rumors and stuff going on about this show. I think everyone that wasn’t there assumed things happened that didn’t based on hearsay.  I did not think Zac was pissed off, I think he was teasing about trying to get everyone to sing louder and if they didn’t he would leave.  As far as ending his set by dropping the guitar near the amp – I think that was all for dramatic effect, not that he was pissed off.  (He did everything on his setlist so it’s not like he was coming through with his earlier ‘threat’)

This Is The Jam
Letters in the Mailbox
Chasing Down My Dreams
Fire on the Mountain
Broken Angel
Bittersweet
I Am
Get So Low
Devils Nachos

The final night – they saved the best for last (his words.) and Isaac had his turn. I truly do think the solo sets got better as the event went along and Isaac had a great set! He talked a little bit about lyrics and did the longest set out of everyone.  He was also the first to repeat a song when he did Best of Times but I don’t think that anyone minded.

River
Minute Without You
So Lovely
More Than Anything
Call Me
Rain
Someone
Deeper
Too Young To Kill
Best of Times

I ended up getting 1 new never before heard (by me) song from Zac and 2 from Isaac’s set.

Jamaica Trip: Hanson Events

Each day, Hanson had their events that they did with the fans.  The first day depending on your color you were either with Zac or Isaac and the next day things were flip flopped.  The last night everyone had Taylor’s afterparty event at the same time.

We started off with Isaac’s trivia sessiona at 3pm our first full day at the island.  I was convinced I was going to win it – but damn the questions were hard!  There were 10 multiple choice questions for us to answer and Isaac did 3 head to head with fans for them to win a t-shirt if they beat him. (Or either way)  He had said that the next day the questions would be different so we figured we would hang out in the back and just keep track of everything (you never know what I might need to snag and use for Trivia Tuesday on Hansonstage…)  They seemed to be a bit easier the second day, or maybe the pressure was just off because we were playing for fun.  Matt Wertz also co-hosted the event – in nothing but his swim trunks.

The second morning we headed out to tie dye with Zac.  I wasn’t sure if I wanted to use my actual merchandise t-shirt or just a plain shirt I had bought because I was not very happy with what I ended up making last year. (Mostly due to the dye mixing and them not having cups) Last second I decided I might as well dye the Hanson shirt.  Zac gave demonstrations of 3 kinds of techniques and then went around and helped us with it. I twisted mine on my own but was afraid to pick it up to put the rubber bands on it.  Zac put the rubber bands on for me and said to use the grass so I wouldnt have to lift it.  I flipped it over and had some grass and even a twig caught in it lol  I decided to use Yellow, Pink and Blue and it came out really nice even with some purples and greens from colors mixing together.  WAY better than last years!

The final event for everyone was after the 3rd Hanson show. It was Taylor’s afterparty and it went until 2am! (Which kind of stunk considering the first buses to leave the resort were leaving at 6am and ours was leaving at 8:30am!)  Taylor played the jams and Zac joined him on stage.  Also joining them throughout the evening were their backup musicians as well as Paul and Matt.  We had no expectations after the dud of Taylor DJing at Mixtape Festival, but this was definitely a vast improvement. They were dancing and singing along and having a great time.  It was a lot of fun!

Jamaica Trip: Hanson Show #3

The final Hanson show was the one we were voting on the setlist for.  They started off pretty good – You Never Know isn’t that rare, but it’s fun.  Ever Lonely as far as I know has been played only 1 time since it was a staple on their 1998 tour so that was a nice one to hear again (and one I did vote for despite it not being a song I hadn’t heard live!) and then they went in to Runaway Run which was another that I had heard but wanted to hear again.  Then they just continued to go through more and more songs – all from the albums.

My theory is that they took the highest Members EP songs and put them into that show 2 nights before and then took all the highest voted album songs and stuck them in for the final night because they are easier for them to play because they’ve played them more.  Although it did leave us all wondering “who voted for these songs?” during the set.  (And Crazy Beautiful and Thinking Bout Somethin were not even on the list!)

The guys had also said they would try their hardest to not repeat any songs.  With 3 full Hanson shows as well as each guy doing their own solo show – that was quite a feat.  This show did have repeats though – Thinking Bout Somethin’ was also done night #1, Every Word I Say was done during Taylor’s solo set and Best of Times was done during Night 2, Isaac’s set and the 3rd show – but they said it was ok because “Best of Times” became the unofficial theme of the event.

89 unique songs is quite impressive all the same. For the encore, they were joined by Paul McDonald, JP and Matt Wertz and sang Back to the Island (with lyrics taped to the stage) and then the final song was when they did Best of Times for the 3rd time of the trip.  It is such a great sing-a-long song.

After this show it was time for the afterparty – hosted by DJ Taylor… and that probably deserves its own post! 😉

Jamaica Trip: Matt & Paul Concert

Night 3 we got a break from Hanson (although Zac did have his solo show earlier in the day) and got to see performances from Matt Wertz and Paul McDonald.  I was super excited for this night because Matt and Paul are two guys I would absolutely go see (and have seen) if they were doing a show in Connecticut.  Maribeth wasn’t sure if she would like Matt, I told her she would and she said he reminded her of early Mayer. (a major compliment in our world)  Matt was up first and played about an hour.  Paul was up second and played a little under an hour.  Isaac was on hand to introduce both acts but unfortunately did not perform with either as I was hoping he would! (Last year he did a couple songs with Rob)  It was two solid sets and Paul got a lot of brownie points for throwing in MMMBop and Penny and Me in his encore!

Jamaica Trip: Hanson Show #2

The theme for Hanson show #2 was Members Only EP songs or as Hanson called it, “Deep Cuts”.  Since 2003 each year Hanson releases a members only EP to fan club members. Typically these EPs contain several never before released tracks some of which were performed on tour, some are brand new.  Over the past 3 or so years they have done an EP release at the May Members Only Event in  Tulsa and played the songs off the EPs so I had heard some of them but there are also quite a few that I had never heard.  And yes, I did bring a list so I could cross songs off as I heard them.  They had given us a list of 77 songs to vote on for the Setlist voting night and I figured that they would probably stick to playing those 77 songs over the 3 shows.  Of those 77, 11 I had never heard before.

This show actually kicked off with back-to-back songs I had never heard before – In A Way – which was performed on pretty much every Live & Electric tour show EXCEPT the one that I went to as well as End of the Line, which as far as I know has never been performed live before.  It was all downhill from there (although, not really because a lot of these songs are not “staples” and have only been played a time or two before) until the encore when they busted out with what was the shortest Hanson song ever – Watershed. (And not on my list of 11)

After this show we did go to the bonfire, but the burgers were nothing like what I had remembered (aka the best burgers I’ve ever had) so we didn’t stick around for very long.

Jamaica Trip: Hanson Show #1

It didn’t really feel like we were going to a Hanson concert, probably because we had both had such a long day!  It took me a while to really get in to the show – that and Taylor’s new haircut was creeping me out.  (I’ve since gotten over it).  For the first night’s show they performed their new album ANTHEM, it its entirety from start to finish. (But none of the Demo tracks that didn’t make the album – boo!)

Since ANTHEM is only 13 tracks, they also added some more songs at the end of the set to make the show a bit longer.  My goal is always to hear a new song I hadn’t heard them do live before, but unfortunately I had heard all of ANTHEM before the album was even released. (You know you go to too many shows when…)  But it was nice to see it from start to finish – almost like a 6 of 6 addition to the 5 of 5 even they had done before Shout It Out was released.

Zac apparently forgot the track listing of the album because when Fired Up finished he started up with the drumming for You Cant Stop Us, apologized, and then they went into I’ve Got Soul which is the proper 2nd track.

I think the set turned out to be a nice easing into the event for everyone.

Because we were so tired, after the show we decided to skip the bon fire and go to the lobby to check WiFi and then head to our room.  On the way there, we took the ramp instead of the stairs and I heard footsteps and talking behind me, that sounded a heck of a lot like Zac. I turned and he said “Hey Guys” and “You found our secret walkway!”  Maribeth and I turned and said “No! You found OUR secret walkway” at the exact same time. We all had a laugh.  Taylor was with him too and he asked if we were having a good time,  I said yes, but we had a rough day of traveling.  Zac said he hoped that tomorrow would be better.  Maribeth also told Taylor he had a nice haircut and he said “Thanks, it’s fresh.”

We had no problem falling asleep after the show and were glad that we were in the group that didn’t have an event until 3pm the next day!

Hanson in Sayreville, NJ

Tuesday night was my last Hanson concert of the ANTHEM World Tour. I think. At least for this leg.  It was also the band’s second to last show of the tour. (I always vow not to miss the last show of the tour but have yet to actually go to one)  I think for the first time EVER I actually made it to the Starland Ballroom in the amount of time it should have taken for me to get there.  (One year we left at 11am and didn’t get there until doors? at 7? I live 2 hours away…)  Starland was actually severely damaged last year when Superstorm Hurricane whatever it’s being called Sandy made its way through our area.  They completely renovated and re-opened in September.  Honestly, it had been a while since I had been there and it didn’t seem all that different.  Upgraded? Yes. But the general layout and the ADA section being waaaaaay in the back was all the same.  Although I was worried that where we were, Taylor’s piano would block everything… and it didn’t so that was a pleasant surprise!

David Ryan Harris opened up and I think he did the same. exact. setlist as the other 2 times I had seen him.  I mean, I guess it’s easier that way for him but with Hanson you get a lot of fans going to a lot of shows and I always appreciate it when an opener acknowledges this and switches things up a bit.  I do love his voice but I just can’t get in to him as an opener for Hanson.  I don’t know why they always bring these more mellow guys on tour with them.  Any other place I would LOVE them but before a Hanson show I want to get hyped up, not be on the verge of taking a nap.

Then it was time for Hanson! This was my 93rd show.  And I didn’t get any new songs which was a bummer (I missed out on their cover of Ain’t Too Proud To Beg which is a HUGE bummer! Maybe they’ll do it in Jamaica?) But they did do Too Much Heaven acapella again (though unlike in Pittsburgh, they used a mic) and it was interesting to see how different it was (moreso based on venue and crowd reaction) in Jersey vs Pittsburgh.  In Pittsburgh Zac told us to be quiet and pretty much everyone shut up.  In Jersey they told us to be quiet and it got loud because everyone was “sshing” each other.

For solos – Isaac did For Your Love. Again. So that is 5 out of 7 that I got that from him.  Zac mixed things up with The Walk. I want to say that I had no repeats from Zac in the solo department, but I may be lying (I don’t have setlists handy  to double check but if anything he may have repeated only 1) and Taylor did Save Me… again.  Not sure that count either but the funny thing is before the tour I was talking about how I was hoping that some of the rare-er performed songs would stay that way.  Save Me up until this album I had heard live 2x. Once at 5 of 5 where they played every album song, ever, so that hardly counts.  Now my count is much higher thanks to Taylor’s solos. grumble grumble.

The rest of the show was pretty typical… but for the encore they brought out another mic and David Ryan Harris joined them.  Taylor said something about it being “that time of year” and so they did Merry Christmas Baby and Run Rudolph Run for the encore with DRH on guitar and he sang a verse in Merry Christmas Baby as well.  Then Taylor was talking about how we did the walk (well not me but others) and how they liked walking around the parking lot and that they liked our energy and our enthusiasm for Jesus’ birth?  I’m not sure if that’s what he said exactly but I guess it was because everyone got excited for the Christmas songs.

After the show it was FREEZING and the line at the bus seemed a bit insane.  I had 2 hours to get home ahead of me so I waited a bit for the parking lot to clear but then headed home.  Although I didn’t listen to the GPS when it told me to take an alternate exit and got caught in some traffic because a car was stuck under a tractor trailer… I was only stuck for a couple of minutes, fortunately.  Then when I got closer to home a car or two had hit a deer (they were pulled off on the side of the road) and I got to drive through all the mess of it that was in the road. Gross. Hopefully the cars aren’t banged up too bad.  Then I was trying to be hyper aware of any other deer out there. Fortunately only saw one that was eating on the side of the road and stayed put!

Hanson 11/8/13 Pittsburgh, PA

Friday I had taken the day off of work because we had scored 3rd row tickets to the Pittsburgh show.  The Carnegie Music Hall Library is one of the best venues I have ever been to, ever.  It’s just a shame that it is 7 hours from me. (Fortunately, only about 3 hours from Maribeth).  Five of us were going to the show and we all packed in the car for the road trip. We ended up getting to the venue in time to catch the tail end of David Ryan Harris’ set and didn’t actually enter the theater until he was done.

The nice thing about this venue is that it was actually built for acoustics and performing without being amplified.  Hanson love this and usually do a completely acapella number with no mics.  Last time they did Change In My Life and it was absolutely incredible.  There was no doubt in my mind that they would be doing something like that again at this show.

The show started out almost the same as the night before – only with the addition of Penny and Me (a song I can do without – I think I ODed on it on the 2004 tour).  Even the acoustic set was going along the same way until they all were standing around mouthing things to each other.  I had thought Zac mouthed “Strong Enough To Break” to Taylor, but whatever it was, Taylor stuck his tongue out and said no.  They all walked to the front of the stage and Zac told us about how they liked the venue and were going to do something unamplified but we’d all have to be very quiet.  We all agreed and he said they were doing something by the “original 3 brothers band” and went in to an amazing rendition of The BeeGees “Too Much Heaven”. I freaked out (silently) in the beginning but then thought enough to get my camera recording.  For the most part the crowd stayed quiet but there was a bit of “ssshhh”ing going on and there was some phone that seemed to be talking as well – a guys voice. Not sure what that was all about.  And I’ve never heard so many phone notifications during a song in my life! 😉  But despite the minor interruptions the rendition was absolutely amazing – AND I got a new song – NEVER before performed to add to my list! (They’ve since added it into the set at the shows afterwards so I’m not feeling as special as I was – but all the other shows got it with a microphone!)

After that it was time for Isaac’s solo and he joked about how it would be hard to follow that.  He did For You Love… surprise surprise. (I’m 4 out of 6 with that as his solo).  Zac came out and did Go on the guitar and Taylor did Lost Without You – which was another rare one that they’ve done less than a handful of times.

We got the Happy Together cover as well – which Maribeth was excited about (we have been hounding them about covers every time we see them!) but I had previously seen in Vegas. (Still a great cover though!) And the encore was Already Home which was another rare one.

Overall this show was WAY better than Philly and I’m sure we will be trying very, very hard to go to shows in Pittsburgh from now on… Cmon shows on the weekends boys!

Hanson – 11/7/13 Philadelphia, PA TLA

Thursday, after working crazy work hours in order to leave work early, I took off to PA to see Hanson in Philly. I met up with my partners in crime for the night – Maribeth and Amber and the original plan was to take the train to the venue but last minute Maribeth decided she could probably drive it and find a parking garage nearby.  The GPS rerouted us at least 5 times and we ended up making it there just before the opening act, David Ryan Harris, was set to take the stage.  Once I made it up to the balcony the lights went out on me and it was time for David.  As much as I enjoy him, he is a bit too mellow and almost became the only artist to put me to sleep during a show – TWICE.  Great if I was trying to fall asleep. Not so great to hype me up before Hanson taking the stage.

The goal for this show was the same as all the rest – get a new song I had never heard live before.  Unfortunately that didn’t end up happening as the new cover “Ain’t Too Proud To Beg” was not put in the set and everything else I had heard before.  However, Isaac did do “More Than Anything” as his solo which is a rarer song and a treat. They also threw Sound of Light into the set which is on their Hanson.net Members EP that is not a common song either.  (I was in Tulsa for the recording of the Members EP though, so I heard that one before – actually twice before because they had to do it twice for recording purposes)  Zac also did a rarer solo song – Get So Low – that he had previously premiered in Jamaica and done only a couple other times as a solo on tour.

The lighting at the venue was also not the best for pictures, but overall I thought the setlist was strong and it was a solid show.  We ended up going to a closed ice cream shop to buy water after the show and headed back to Maribeth’s house before taking on round 2 the next day.
