Book Review: The Wedding Gift

The Wedding Gift is by Kathleen McKenna. The book starts with some newspaper articles about a family being killed brutally in their home and how the story progressed to it being that the wife had killed her husband, 5 children and then herself. Then there were more articles about their abandoned home (mansion) and a child who had died while sneaking around the “haunted” house.

The story is from the point of view of Leann Worthier who is the sister of the boy who died at the haunted house and is about to marry the nephew of the man who was brutally murdered in the home. Leann is just graduating high school and her fiance (and baby daddy) is in his mid 20s. The fiance is one of the Willets, a rich family and he is the heir to their fortune.

When I picked out this book – I saw that it was listed as Horror / Ghost but I figured I could handle it.  (Why I thought that, I don’t know because I am a total scaredy cat!)  When I made it through the whole first part of the book (it is 3 parts) and there was no mention of anything other than the brutal murders, I figured I’d be home free. WRONG!  I have a very over active imagination and it doesn’t take much to freak me out.  When the ghost was first mentioned in the story, it was just about time for me to head to bed to get a good night’s sleep for work the next day.  I opted to stop reading at that point so I wouldn’t end up awake all night freaked out.  The next night was the day before Thanksgiving, so I was able to push through it and not have to worry about getting a decent night’s sleep.

The book is very well written and a great mystery. I love a mystery that I can’t solve before the book is through and this was definitely one of them.  It was definitely interesting the back and forth with whether or not Leann really loved George, if the ghost Robina was bad or good, if the ghost was even real or a figment of Leann’s (and my) imagination.

The book comes in at about 250 pages and took me 2 nights to read. It would have taken 2 nights even if not for me stopping the first night.  I tried not to give too much away in the review because everyone should check it out.  Although, maybe not if you spook yourself out easily! 😉

About the Book

Leann wasn’t good enough for her uppercrust in-laws, so they gave her the mansion none of them wanted. Years ago, something or someone in the house killed Leann’s brother. Will its violent secrets kill her, next?“ . . . a spine-electrifying supernatural tale where a huge Southern States mansion contains one of the most terrifying, violent and indeed psychopathic ghosts to haunt any town. It is also a murder mystery—why did Robina Willets apparently kill all five of her young children, and her husband, before stabbing herself to death? And, if you are in the camp of believing that ‘Justice . . . just is not,’ then this will have you frothing at the mouth with righteous social fury.”—Tim Roux, author of Missio and The Dance of the Pheasodile

Book Review: Smitten

I thought Smitten was a pretty neat book – it has 4 authors – Collen Coble, Krisitn Billerbeck, Denise Hunter & Diann Hunt and each of them wrote approximately 10 chapters about their character, so in a way it was a book made up of 4 smaller books.  But the cool part is, each of the stories went together about 4 best friends and each story covered one of the 4 seasons so you got to find out what went on in Smitten, VT year round!

The story revolves around 4 best friends – Natalie, Julia, Shelby and Reese.  All are single and looking for love and all are looking to spruce up Smitten and get more tourists there now that the mill closed to try and generate some revenue for the town.  Natalie has her own coffee shop and for the whole book was trying to perfect gluten free cookies to sell.  Julia was looking to open up a spa after coming back to Smitten after helping run a spa in New York City.  Shelby taught a school to young women on how to be a lady and Reese, the athletic one of a bunch, wanted to start up an outdoors store.

They hope that the return of Sawyer Smitten, now a country music star, to Smitten for his wedding would help bring in media and tourists and they are trying to get everything up and running by the wedding on Valentine’s day.  Meanwhile, they all seem to find love in places they probably wouldn’t have otherwise looked – all because they put their faith in God that they could get the town up and running and making money again.

This was a relatively quick read and I quickly had an attachment to all of the characters and was rooting for them to find a man! (Although it was a bit too convenient that there were 4 single ladies and 4 single men in town that otherwise never seemed to look at each other, but I’ll let that slide lol)  I was kind of bummed when I finished the story because I wanted to read more – but good news! Another story will be coming out in December 2012.  Ok, so that is quite some time to wait… but that’s ok!

Book Review: How To Stop Procrastinating

I will admit, procrastinating is definitely one of my biggest flaws.  I am notorious for putting off things that need to be done NOW to instead work on things that can be done later.  In fact, as I am writing this review I had 3 books that I could have read.  Based on the schedule I had made up for the blog – the other 2 books I want to have reviews posted for earlier than this one.  But which book did I read and am now reviewing? You guessed it… the one that has the date the furthest away!  That book is – how to stop procrastinating.

The second chapter is titled “How do you currently spend your time?” and it is the one that hit home the most for me. Trevor suggests that you create an Excel spreadsheet and in 15 minute intervals record what you are doing for a week to figure out what you spend your time on.  The fact is, I do not even need to do this exercise – I *know* that when I am home most of my time is spend doing “stupid stuff” on the computer rather than working on my websites, classes or blogs. (Not that these are all THAT important, but I often end up getting behind on updates and then flustered and overwhelmed with I realize I have no free time and LOTS of stuff to do).

The book then goes on to teach techniques on how to handle things that need to be done.  One of them being “Do The Big Stuff First” Which I am totally not doing right now – I picked this book to read over the other 2 that I have to read because it is only 20 pages and the other two are 200+.  Even with my weekly “weekend to do list” I am always doing the tiny things so I can feel better about the list by crossing a few things off without doing much work.  I guess I need to work on this!

And I have to say – the “Avoid those bright shiny objects” chapter cracked me up. I am constantly getting distracted by something else when I am working on things.  It doesn’t even have to be something shiny 😉

Book Review: Cliques, Hicks and Ugly Sticks

Cliques, Hicks and Ugly Sticks is the Confessions of April Grace by KD McCrite.  This is the second book in a series and I had no read the first one.  However, I didn’t have any trouble following the story and the characters that were used in the book.

April Grace has just started junior high and on top of all the drama and changes going on with that – the St. Jameses are staying with her family while Isabel recovers from an accident.  Isabel is a bit of a drama queen and her husband Ian is at her beck and call.  Meanwhile, April thinks that her mother might be sick and tells her father that she is concerned.  Both her mother and father assure her that everything is fine, but April thinks that day by day her mother is getting sicker and sicker.  Plus, April has to deal with one of the cliques at school – The Lotties.  The leader, Lottie, used to be friends with April and her best friend Melissa – but this year she is not allowed to speak to any of the Lotties without her speaking to them first.

The holidays are fast approaching and April is worrying that her mother is really, really ill.  Instead, she finds out that her mother is expecting a baby, but was afraid to tell April and her sister until she was a bit further along in the pregnancy.

The book really pulls at your emotions – there are funny parts (especially when April talks about her older sister Myrna Sue),  stressful parts like all the drama with the St Jameses moving in, Grandma moving in, switching houses and bedrooms around and sadness when April’s mom goes in the hospital a month and a half before the baby is due and ends up giving birth!  Overall, the book kept my attention and was a quick read.  It is definitely recommended for the young adult crowd.

About the Book

Just when April Grace thought the drama was over . . .

After an automobile accident, Isabel St. James—resident drama coach and drama queen—needs help putting together the church play. Mama insists April Grace and Myra Sue will help. April’s fall is now devoted to spending every afternoon with Isabel and Myra Sue—if anyone is as big of a drama queen as Isabel, it’s Myra Sue. Plus, she’s dumb. (Okay, not dumb, but “older sister dumb.”) If that’s not enough, Isabel is wreaking havoc in the community trying to get Rough Creek Road paved, the new boy at school will not leave her alone, and then Mama drops the biggest bombshell of all . . . April Grace is no longer going to be the baby of the family . . .

Girls will completely relate to April and love her sense of humor as she deals with siblings, boys, and the many changes that come with growing up.

Book Review: Departures by Robin Jones Gunn

Departures is really 2 books in one. To be quite honest, I chose it because of the cover and it being a suitcase.  Sometimes choosing a book by its cover gets me in trouble. However, in this case it worked out and I quite enjoyed the book(s) and I read it very quickly!

The first story is about Christy and her family going back home to the midwest from California for her grandparents 50th wedding anniversary.  Christy wonders if Matthew, the boy she had a crush on before they moved would be around.  Her mother tells her that he would be and then is shocked when he calls her grandparents house to see if she wants to hang out.  He takes her on a tour of the area, bringing back random memories from school and birthday parties as they go.  It turned out that one of Christy’s friends had told him that Christy liked him years and years ago, but Matthew never reacted to it.  Another old friend, Melissa is in the picture and Christy thinks that Matt may rather be with her, and isn’t sure if she still has feelings for him after all.  Christy then tries for find ways to make sure that she and Matt are alone without Melissa, but once Matt confesses that he likes Christy (and may go to college just an hour away from where she lives on a full scholarship), Christy decides that they should take things slow.  There are other books with Christy as the main character (LOTS actually) so I am curious to see if this relationship is expanded upon in any future works or not!

The second story is about Sierra and her friend Jana, who are going on vacation to her parents cabin along with her brother Gregg and his friend Tim.  In fact, Sierra and Christy are in the airport at the same time and their paths cross!  When their first plane gets canceled due to an airline strike, the kids get their tickets exchanged to a different flight.  In Minnesota with a lot of time to kill, they decide to spend some time at the Mall of America before heading back for their flight.  Only to find out that the flight they were booked to no longer exists with the airline!  They are then forced to stay overnight and get a flight out the next morning.   Jana is excited to see the neighbor boy, Danny, once they arrive at the cabin.  Except that then she and Sierra both start developing feelings for Jana’s brother’s friend Tim!  Jana is torn between Danny and Tim and Sierra is upset that Jana is moving in on Tim when she likes Tim AND Jana has Danny!   The crew go river rafting, cliff jumping and have a fun summer. Although… we never really know who Jana decides to go for!

Now Boarding at Gate 10
After her high school graduation, still aching from Todd’s departure, Christy joins her family on a trip to Wisconsin to visit relatives. While there, she reunites with Matthew, an old friend from junior high. In the Event of a Water Landing
Fifteen-year-old Sierra Jensen can’t wait to spend her summer vacation with her friend Jana at a pristine lake in Montana. But when they arrive, it becomes clear that Jana’s only interest is acquiring a boyfriend. Sierra just wants to hang out with the guys as friends, but Jana turns every encounter into a possible romantic relationship. As their friendship begins to suffer, Sierra wonders if it’s possible to find a Forever Friend who will listen to you, laugh with you, and keep your confidences.

Book Review: Iris & Dragonflies

Iris and the Dragonflies is a middle grade fantasy novel by Rosemary Danielis.  It tells the story of Iris, who appears to be just a regular school girl, but it is revealed that she can talk to Dragonflies.  When her local creek (her favorite spot to talk to the dragonflies) is in danger, she steps up and tries to stop to company who wants to develop there and to save the creek.

Also, on a trip to Ireland during school vacation, she heads to Ireland to visit her grandmother.  There she finds a dragon tooth – proof that dragons exist. She also ends up finding out that she is a Dragon Seer and can talk to dragons too!

Other sub plots in the story revolve around Iris and her life at school – she has just one friend, Grace, and they can hear each other talking even when they aren’t right next to each other.  The next year in school, a lot of new students join the class and it turns out that there is a whole group of them who can hear each other and now Grace and Iris have more friends than just each other.

The story is obviously aimed at children much younger than me, but I thought that it was a great story and fun to follow.  It also showed about how anyone can make a difference – even if they are only 11 years old and in school and also the importance of friendship. (And as the author says – the magic within us!)

Book Review: Wonderland Creek by Lynn Austin

When I first read the title of this book, Wonderland Creek, and then saw that the main character’s name was Alice, I was expecting that this book would end up being some sort of Alice in Wonderland spin off.  I was pleasantly surprised when it wasn’t, but also when Alice who narrates the book commented herself about how it was like she was in Wonderland and related some of the characters in Acorn, KY to those in Alice in Wonderland.  (The creek just so happens to really be named Wonderland Creek).

In the beginning, we meet Alice (who goes by Allie) who works at the Library and always has her nose in a book. (Sounds kind of familiar… do I know anyone like that? hmm.)  When her boyfriend catches her reading a book at a funeral of one of the locals, he gets upset with her and tells her how she doesn’t have a life outside of books and ultimately ends up breaking up with her. (One of the reasons for the breakup is that she had an “episode” of sorts at the movie theater and told everyone how she didn’t like how the movie changed the book so much.  Not that I go off at movie theaters, but I often do make the same comparisons!)

Allie decides that she should get away and decides to deliver the books she has been collecting for a needy community herself. She had been communicating with the librarian there, Leslie MacDougall and doesn’t think it would be a problem for her to stay a few nights while her Aunt and Uncle go off to a spa, dropping her off and picking her back up on their way through the town.  Allie is pleasantly surprised when Leslie, whom she thought was a woman, is actually a man that goes by ‘Mack’ and that there are no restaurants or hotels in the small town of Acorn. (Or electricity or running water or indoor plumbing!)

Mack ends up getting shot early on in Allie’s visit, and she learns of a lot of strange things that happen in the town of Acorn.  The mine which had helped everyone make a living closed down so many people were poor.  There was also a HUGE fued going on between two of the main families in town – the Arnetts and the Larkins.  This was over some money that was apparently buried by an Arnett and a Larkin.  Each family believes the other family has already found and spent the money.  Mack also believes that an accident at the mine killing one of his best friends was not an accident at all.

Mack ends up faking his death really early on in the book and Allie has to help tend to the library, garden, etc at the home as well as Miss Lillie who is nearing 100 years old and has raised Mack as her own since she was his mother’s midwife and his mother died during childbirth.

The book is 35 chapters long and quite a good read, though it did take me a few days to get through it.  All throughout the book Allie talks about how she is going to head back home – but something ends up making her stay a little longer each time. (One being that her Aunt and Uncle were sent home when they first came to pick her up!)  Lillie believes that God sent Allie to Acorn for a reason and intends to find out why.  The town does end up finding out why, but I’ll leave that up to you to figure out once you start reading 🙂

About the book

I was perfectly content with my life–that is, until the pages of my story were ripped out before I had a chance to live happily ever after.

Alice Grace Ripley lives in a dream world, her nose stuck in a book. But the happily-ever-after life she’s planned on suddenly falls apart when her boyfriend breaks up with her, accusing her of living in a world of fiction instead of the real one. To top it off, Alice loses her beloved library job because of cutbacks due to the Great Depression.

Longing to run from small-town gossip, Alice flees to the mountains of eastern Kentucky to deliver five boxes of donated books to the tiny coal-mining town of Acorn, a place with no running water, no electricity, and where the librarians ride ornery horses up steep mountain passes to deliver books. When Alice is forced to stay in Acorn far longer than she planned, she discovers that real-life adventure, mystery–and especially romance–may be far better than her humble dreams could have imagined.

Ultimate Recipes Review & Giveaway

Sponsored by Tomoson.comIf you are in the market for a recipe e-book, look no further than the Ultimate Recipes e-book from http://www.cookingconnect.com/!  The book contains 5,000 recipes including 1000 Atkins Diet Recipes, 101 Camping & Outdoor Recipes, 101 Recipes for the Deep Fryer, 111 Egg Recipes, 120 Lip-Smacking Good Jam Recipes, 300 Chicken Recipes, 470 Crock Pot Recipes, 65 Tried and True Traditional Amish Recipes, Cat Heat Biscuits and Garlic Fried Chicken, Cheesecake Recipes, Chocolate Recipes for Chocolate Lovers and Many More.

When I first downloaded this e-book I was incredibly overwhelmed! There were 4 zip files to download and each one was FULL of recipes and photos and information.  I had no idea where to begin and I put off writing this review for a very, very long time because of this.  Eventually I said to myself “One Step at a Time” and sang some Jordin Sparks. (Whenever I am overwhelmed that song calms me down and tells me what to do to get through things – just take it one step at a time!)  I went through the PDFs one by one, zip by zip.

I’m not sure if the actual e-book comes as just one document, but what I was sent was a bunch of separate documents so it made things a bit harder for me to shuffle through – but I did it! 😉 There are a few recipes that I have no use for – specifically the crock pot recipes (I don’t have a crock pot) and camping.  But if you do have a crock pot and/or camp – there are 101 Camping & Outdoor recipes ranging from Hamburger Stew, to chicken, to fish, and lots more.  There are 470 crock pot recipes – lots of soups and puddings, some breads, dips, etc.  Coming in at 480 pages if you have a crock pot I think it would be difficult to NOT find something you’d like to make in here.

The first area I checked out for myself was the salads.  I’m trying to eat healthier – especially at work.  I am always looking for something that I can easily make in advance and bring to work for lunch so I don’t end up at Wendy’s or some other fast foot joint every afternoon.  I think I could try each and every salad included in this book and not have to worry about trying to same thing twice for many, many months.  The salads were broken down to Vegetables, Fruit, Fish, Meats, High Protein and Other.  Also included are recipes for several different kinds of dressings (my favorite!).  This ebook has definitely given me some ideas and I really need to start making an ingredient list…

Another area of the book that caught my eye was “gift jar” recipes.  These are always on lists for stocking stuffers, inexpensive gifts, what to get for people you don’t know well, etc.  All of these recipes sound delicious – lots of great cakes and cookies.  Some of which can even be cooked in their jars which is extra awesome. I’m not sure I have it together enough to makes some of these for this Christmas, but definitely next year I can see this happening!  Or maybe just during the year as well – as I’m always down for some cookies or cake. (Which is probably why I need to start eating healthier at lunch…)

The final section of the book I am going to focus on (If I kept going about all the sections of this book I would probably end up being here for a year – there is a TON of content) is PUDDINGS!  The fact that there is an entire PAGE for the table of contents – with 3 columns full of puddings is what intrigued me the most.  Potato pudding, Carrot pudding, Indian pudding, Honey Pudding… the list goes on and on (and on and on!)

Book Review: Why Men Hate Going to Church

Why Men Hate Going to Church is a book by David Murrow.  It talks a bit about why met dislike church, what their perceptions of church are (and why they may or may not be correct) and what might be able to be done in order to get more men at church services each week.  The thing that I found interesting was that this battle of a decline in men going to church services actually dates back as far to 1844, it is not a recent development, though perhaps it has gotten to be more of an issue in more recent years.

The next time you go to church – look around.  How many women are there versus men?  Is the ratio quite off?  The book mentions one preacher who believed that his church was even matched in men vs women.  Once the question came up – he counted.  Women outnumbered the men – 5 to 1.

Is it that men have better things to be doing on a Sunday morning than women? Or are church services just more geared towards women than men?

The book goes in to great detail about the difference between men and women when it comes to being spiritual and having a spiritual relationship.  This book was sent to me due to an error by BookSneeze, but I am quite glad I read it because it was an interesting look at the opposite sex, at least for me.  There are also plenty of graphs and research to back up a lot of the points.

About the Book

It’s Sunday morning. Where are all the men? Golfing? Playing softball? Watching the tube? Mowing the lawn? Sleeping? One place you won’t find them is in church. Less than 40 percent of adults in most churches are men, and 20 to 25 percent of married churchgoing women attend without their husbands. And why are the men who do go to church so bored? Why won’t they let God change their hearts?

David Murrow’s groundbreaking book has been completely revised and updated, with eye-opening research and a persuasive grasp on the facts, to explain the problem and offer hope and encouragement to women, pastors, and men. Why Men Hate Going to Church does not call men back to the church—it calls the church back to men.

About the Author

David Murrow is an award-winning television producer and writer based in Alaska. (You’ve probably heard of his most famous former client, Sarah Palin.) He is the director of Church for Men, an organization that helps congregations reconnect with the wold’s largest unreached people group.  The first edition of Why Men Hate Going to Church was an instant Christian best seller, with more than 100,000 copies in print.  His efforts have spawned articles in the New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and The Chicago Tribune, to name a few.  He has been featured on PBS, the NBC Nightly News, and the Fox News Channel, talking about the gender gap.  David is married with three children, two grandchildren and a dachshund named Pepper.
