Banana Ball

Bananaland at Sea

I had been planning this Bananaland at Sea trip for what felt like forever, but when the time finally came it seemed like it snuck up on me. Initially I was going to fly in the Saturday before, but with there being threats of snow and slick roads I opted to leave Friday morning instead doing one of the most panicked packing jobs of my life Thursday evening. (And I only managed to forget a hairbrush!)

Friday I had some backup plans incase the hotel room wasn’t ready since I’d be landing before check in time, but to my surprise it was ready so I ended up just chilling there and booking flights for a future trip because are you really on a trip if you’re not planning the next one while you’re there?  My roommate for the trip was supposed to be coming in Saturday morning as well but ended up joining me Friday evening as well.

Saturday when I woke up I found out that there was a Capybara Cafe and we had a visit booked for Sunday afternoon.  We ended up doing my Friday back up plans on Saturday, getting tacos and walking to the Tampa Baseball Museum.  The museum is housed in Al Lopez home but has a focus of players who came from the area – including my former favorite Met, Pete Alonso. It’s basically one large room but has a lot of cool artifacts and the wall with balls signed by just some of the players from the area is really impressive to see just how many have come out of that area (and many of them have made their way to the NY teams!)  After I was done with my history lesson, we went for a walk to pick up the race packet for the 10k my friend was going to run the next morning.  We then had a while time at the hotel over accessibility and potentially moving rooms and our own personal Tower of Terror.

Sunday I hung out in the room while my friend did her 10k, we found a cute tavern for breakfast and then made our way to the Capybara Cafe! In addition to capybaras they had a couple of baby goats, a guinea pig, tortoise, rabbit, some birds, some snakes…  We were given 1 piece of lettuce/kale upon entering to feed anything but the goats with and then we had bought extra to feed them some more.  Since I had no way to hold my extra lettuce I placed it on toaster (rollator) and one of the capybaras, I think his name was Latte, decided to help himself up on to toaster and help himself.  Shortly after the baby goats decided to tag team me and try to get the strings on my cane and my shoelaces and staff had to rescue me.  Then I decided I’d be safer sitting down and just observing everyone else interacting before I got taken out by another baby goat.  We made another quick museum stop at the St. Petersburg Museum of History to check out Little Cooperstown which is a collection of 5036 signed baseballs with his a Guinness World Record.

Sunday night one of the fans who would be on the cruise organized a Super Bowl party that was basically in the parking lot of our hotel. (I may have booked that on purpose)  While our hotel room overlooked the restaurant, we had to navigate around a fence so it wasn’t quite as close as expected.  A few of the banana ball players came out, there was a lot of great food and we even got our own baseball card made (with a group photo).  Things got a bit loud and overwhelming so we left after the halftime show to decompress and get ready for our voyage!

Monday morning we made our way to the hotel lobby to get a ride to the port, only for there to be a shuttle with room waiting for us.  By the time we arrived the bananaland party had already started with the Nanas and other cast members welcoming everyone up the escalators.  Since I had rented a scooter, we had to wait for the elevator, which unfortunately was not working so we had to wait until it got its act together.  Entering the check in area we were given high fives from a ton of players and we were able to check in, get our keys and then went where we thought we would be out of the way.  I made a video for friends saying that the waiting area was “chaos in the best possible way” only for us to end up in the way of a player parade shortly after.

Once we got on board, we decided to make our way to one of the restaurants first for lunch.  After lunch I discovered that the ship had its very own penny machine which was pretty exciting.  We then went to our first panel, “Broadway on the Boat” which featured Party Down’s Jenane,  The Firefighter’s Sam Tinnesz and the Bananas’ Derek Klena.  They had each talked a bit about how they came to banana ball and sang a song – Jenane sang Aretha’s Natural Woman, Sam sang his song Legends (which honestly I was a bit sick of by the end of the trip, hoping he adds some new songs to his repertoire for the games!) and Derek sang Dancing Through Life from Wicked and then Beautiful City from Godspell.  It was a nice introduction to Derek and I’m looking forward to see what he adds to the games and a bit bummed I’m not going to be seeing the bananas all that much this season! (But hoping since I am seeing them in NYC things will be pretty awesome)

After dinner we noticed that all the decorations and theming had gone up around the boat.  We also bumped into my “cousin” Connor on our way to dinner after we decided the pool deck was a bit too cold to continue watching Party Down.  We ended up bumping into Flash, Ryan and Reese while we were wandering around.  They had players stationed at the hand sanitizer stations on the way into the buffet making up “washy washy” songs.  We also tried to check out the Whale Show – but couldn’t see a thing. I would have liked if they could have somehow streamed it on the screen behind the stage instead of it just saying “Whale Show”.  Biko and Josh were narrating and it seemed to be mostly the Party Animals pretending to be whales in the pool.  I can only imagine how cold that pool was.  When we got back to the room we had a message that since we had asked for a refund on our Vibe Club purchase (which is a whole other story because it wasn’t accessible and no one decided to let us know that until we showed up and tried to access it) we had to go and get new key cards.  Did they mention this when my friend went downstairs to request the refund? No.  THEN we we decided to go to sleep early and were waken at 10pm with a phone call about the refund being processed – which we knew about because they had emailed us about it before we even set sail!  THEN we got a 6am phone call while we were still sleeping that an alarm was going off in the room and they wanted to make sure we were ok and didn’t need help.  There was nothing going on in the room – we were asleep.

To start the day I decided to expedite my getting out of bed by… falling.  I knew it was bound to happen because the bed was just way too tiny for me.  But after falling out once I learned my lesson and made all my movements very carefully for the rest of the week.  For lunch we went to tea time with Princess Potassia and colored photos and did princess trivia.  After that we went to the theater to watch Jeopardy and Family Feud.  I knew more Jeopardy than I thought I would and whoever they asked the questions to for Family Feud were weirdos – which seem to be the case whenever this game gets played.  For Jeopardy it was Tailgaters vs Bananas vs Firefighters and each team had 1 player and 2 fans to a team.  Family Feud was 4 fans and 3 players – Tailgaters vs Party Animals.  Split came out with a Steve Harvey mustache on and distracted everyone playing with it. Did you expect anything less?  After we went by the Mascot M&G but the line was so ridiculous we decided to skip it.  Before the cruise a fan swap had been coordinated and we were supposed to just leave the gifts at our groups doors but my group decided we would meet up and give them to each other in person which was a much better idea because we got to meet each other and make some new friends!  I got a lot of really cool stuff – some really talented fellow fans on board! Then we went to dinner where Fisher came by and serenaded us with his flute with some classical tunes.  Then it was time for our group to check out Bananaland At Sea – THE SHOW!  I was really excited for it and when they let ADA in they were still rehearsing so we had to pretend like we didn’t see anything. (Honestly it didn’t give anything away)  They did a great job with the show and somehow fitting a LOT of content into one hour.

Wednesday we docked in Cozumel and we had bought a pass to hang out at a resort for the day. It was all inclusive though it was a bit cooler than I was hoping for so I didn’t end up going in the pool, but it was a nice little escape.  Bonus entertainment – the drunk old guy who fell in the pool (he was ok), his wife who was incredibly pissed at him, a friend who decided to finally help him out and everyone else at the pool turning into his mother and him just laughing it up.  When we got back on the boat we changed for the “pajama party” and then I almost ran Bronny over trying to get off the elevator.  He ended up giving me permission to run him over and told me I looked beautiful in my outfit. (Party Animals pajamas, of course!)   We swung by the tattoo event only to see the line was far too long and the tattoos were all generic and not team related, went to cookies and stories with the nanas and snagged some s’mores and ended up leaving before they read us any stories… That evening the boat was quite rocky so while my roommate went to lay down (we never saw her again that night), we made our way by line dancing,  I ended up going to karaoke which was sooo much fun and so many of the players were so into it. Then we popped into the silent disco for a bit but felt a bit out of place and old so we didn’t stay very long.  I guess after we left someone dislocated their knee and the whole thing ended early.

Thursday morning was our Meet and Greet day! Our first session was Tailgaters and Firefighters. I was a bit bummed that they didn’t give us anything to have the players sign (other than a frame, which wouldn’t fit everyone on it, and not knowing what photo was going to go in it, and I still don’t, I didn’t know who to have sign it) and opted to instead get photos with as many of the players as I could instead.  I found the 1 player who knew who Hanson was (according to my friend, there may be more, though they are pretty young – but Peanut is from Tulsa) There also were 3 rogue Party Animals in the back who were otherwise going to be busy and miss their scheduled time so we made sure to see them as well.   Since we finished so fast we ended up finding the nail painting with Bronny and Ryan and watched that for a bit. With better planning, we were able to make it to the mascot meet and greet this time and meet Split, Peter Colada, Coco the Coconut, Bo and Pharty.   Pharty loved my rhinestone jersey of his that I had made.  Of course, MMMBop started playing as we were going through the mascot line – as if Split wasn’t getting annoyed enough with me and not driving my scooter around to pose with him instead of him moving to me… I should have just stopped and sung instead.  We also popped in to Tea with the Princess again for lunch.  We then made our way back to the meet and greets for Party Animals and Clowns.  At this point, we were cutting it close with a silent auction I had my eye on.  My friend decided she was going to leave me to meet the rest of the party animals and go win it for me. We finished up with the rest of the clowns and party animals and made our way to the auction just as it was about to be called – to find out I won for $2 over the initial bid.  Timing worked out great as I was then able to pay for my own winnings. (Eli Manning game worn and signed hat and shirt).  We had time to make our way to Valentine’s with Princess Potassia and then went to the Bananas & Coconuts meet and greet.  We “rope dropped” KJ, knowing his line was going to be pretty long and chatted with him for quite a bit – he didn’t seem too pleased we were going to skip Jackson, but we are adults and can make our own decisions on what lines we do and don’t want to wait in.  We tried to prioritize to get as many players as we could before we had to leave a bit early to head over to our painting class.  We painted the outside of a villa that was supposed to have 5 steps but mine, of course, has a ramp.  It was fun and we had the Party Down band with us.  After painting I grabbed a spot for the closing ceremony while my friend brought the paintings back to the room to dry.  It was still bright out so I couldn’t see the screen of my camera and instead looked through the viewfinder without sunglasses while tearing up from the brightness, so I was pleasantly surprised that the photos I took for the most part came out pretty good!  After we went to dinner, Fisher once again was there with his flute.  We picked up our bag tags, packed up our large suitcases and put them outside for them to be taken away not to see them until Friday morning.  Or so we thought.

Ah, Friday.  We got a “bing bong” in our room from the captain BEFORE 7AM apologizing for coming into our rooms and waking us, but due to fog we wouldn’t be able to dock at the port in Tampa as scheduled and we would be delayed. We had picked the latest time to leave the ship at 9am since we were in no rush to get anywhere as I was flying out the next day and my friend had an evening flight.  When we did wake up we opened the curtains to our balcony and couldn’t see a thing so the fog was definitely bad.  I don’t really remember the timeline of everything else but we were told that we needed to leave our rooms by 10am so they could start to flip them for the next cruise that would be coming on after we left.  We decided to hit up the buffest for breakfast and fans first was channeling their rain delay training and threw together some last minute entertainment for us.  At some point during breakfast we got word we’d be delayed until at least 2pm.  With the ship wall to wall people and luggage, we opted to go into the theater to watch the teams Q&A that was added and just have a spot out of the way.  At some point then our 2pm became 4pm.  At this point, there was nothing we could do but laugh as the plans people were making and changing were just getting thrown out the window.  At some point during the Tailgaters Q&A (I think, I just know Bret Loftis was hosting) the captain came on once again and said he had “good news in some respect” which I knew wasn’t really good news for us.  He said 6 of the 7 channels had reopened but we needed the one in the middle that had not yet reopened. (Cue all the players on the stage doing “6 7” hand motions) He followed that up with “Could be 5 minutes, could be 5 hours” and at that point I knew things were not going to go well.  Friends all rebooked their flights for Saturday and we continued in the theater for Q&A until 4, when we left to get dinner.  Then we went back to the theater for a panel on the history of the Clowns and then over to the lounge for an acoustic show they had put together with Derek, Kaden, Jenane, Jayson, Fisher, Dalton, Sam and Tre (I think that’s everyone?)  where they had played some songs they had never really practiced together for us which ended up being a lot of fun because I hadn’t been able to catch Jayson or Dalton’s sets on the boat due to other activities going on.  I think it was somewhere around this time we got word that the pilot captain would be boarding the ship around 6 and we would likely be getting to the port around 10pm.  After the acoustic set the cruise line set up trivia so we watched that and then decided to grab our luggage we had left in a lounge and start heading to the 7th floor since that’s where we needed to debark from.  We ended up once again hiding in the theater to avoid the chaos outside the rest of the area of everyone wanting to leave.  They ended up calling our 9am debarking colors at 12:17am.  We made it off the boat, couldn’t find our luggage, returned my beloved scooter and made our way to the uber pick up.  While we were waiting to get picked up, the next cruise was getting ready to board the ship having waited all day for updates and standing out in the freezing cold. (WHY was Florida so cold?!)  We finally got to the hotel at 2am.

Saturday was uneventful. I got a 2pm late check out, hung out in the hotel lobby for a bit, took a shuttle to the airport, and hung out there for my flight. The flight was pretty empty, I had an entire row to myself.  I got home by 11:30pm and was ready to sleep in a bit on Sunday!

Overall the trip was a ton of fun! I felt like we missed out on a lot with there being so much overlap but we also did so so much too! I’m definitely ready to go again if they have it!  I am looking forward to the banana ball season starting TONIGHT and all of my games coming up this year!

Meeting Connor Harris

In June, when I was in VIP and meeting The Visitors, one of the players asked me where I was from and when I said CT, he told me that Connor was from CT and I should go talk to him.  After that Connor and I had a little chat every day.  When I saw he was doing a meet and greet in his hometown at a pizza place on Tuesday after I returned from Savannah I figured I’d try to check it out.  It was from 530-7 and I got there around 6 when Connor was giving a speech about his time playing baseball and getting recruited by banana ball.  Everyone was squeezed inside the take out only restaurant, and customers were coming in and out to pick up orders.  I ended up almost tripping an older man with my walker, and as he was leaving I realized it was Will Friedle and his Dad!  I ended up just opting to say “Hey Mr Seat 4C” in a iykyk kind of way, he say heyyy and left.  The place was already chaos so I didn’t want to cause a scene for Will – but I was listening to Pod Meets World and Magical Rewind the whole drive up so it was almost like I manifested it.

I ended up letting most of the kids go up and meet Connor before me, it was fun to see them being so excited and him interacting with them all.  I also met Connor’s Dad, Sister and Mom and chatted with all of them a bit about banana ball and how I had met Connor in Louisville and found out we were both from CT.  Connor remembered me when I got up to him and asked if I had seen that the Firefighters beat the Bananas and was shocked when I told him that I was there! It sounds like he’s on a team next season but no one knows which one yet as everything was being very secretive! (Banana Ball has since announced the 2 new teams – Loco Beach Coconuts and Indianapolis Clowns)  I am looking forward to finding out which team he will be pitching for and planning my 2026 schedule around trying to see all of the teams at least once.

Banana Ball Playoffs

This past weekend I went down to Savannah for the Banana Ball playoffs.  Who would be the #1 seed came down to the wire, with the Bananas taking the lead from the Party Animals after the last game of  the season.  I made sure to get tickets to all 4 games because I wasn’t sure who would be playing in which ones and wanted to make sure I saw everything.

Thursday I flew in with a layover in Baltimore – I had about an hour layover but by the time I got a wheelchair and a pusher (they are notoriously slow in Baltimore) I got to the gate with 6 minutes to spare. I got my rental car, got some lunch and was able to check into the hotel. Then I made my way to the stadium for the game.

Game 1 was Bananas vs Firefighters.  Honestly by banana ball standards this game was pretty boring.  The Firefighters scored 1 in the 5th and went on to win the game 1-0.  This was a surprise especially since they were the #4 seed.  After the game I went to the plaza  for the first time to meet up with a friend, but didn’t end up talking to any of the players.

Friday I did a Girl Scouts tour of Savannah since I had missed out on doing that my last couple trips.  I did a tour of the Juliette Gordon Low house, then went to the first Girl Scouts Headquarters.  Unfortunately the Andrew Low house being built way too long ago wasn’t accessible. (The JGL house turned the dumb waiter into an elevator, which was much appreciated!)  I managed to “earn” myself some girl scouts patches and learned a lot about Juliette and I think we would have been friends!

That night was Party Animals vs Tailgaters. This game was a lot more exciting.  The Party Animals jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead with Andy Cosgrove’s home run in the first. They had 4 more walk offs and were leading 5-0 going into the 9th.  The Tailgaters ended up scoring 2 in the 9th with an RBI single and a HR from Taylor Justus. (One of the Firefighters was watching the game near us and said it was a “moon shot!”)  But the Party Animals remained victorious winning 5-2.  After my friend was my personal security and photographer and got a bunch of photos with me and the players for a project I am working on 😉

Saturday was time for the 2nd game in the Bananas/Firefighters match. Before the game I went to VIB and met a bunch of the players.  I had on my firefighters hat but bananas shirt and a few of the Firefighters were asking me if I was split or had a team I was rooting for and I told them I was definitely leaning towards the Firefighters.   The Bananas scored in the 2nd after a triple and wild pitch and kept the lead for the rest of the game, winning the game 3-2.  Since the series was a “best of 3” but there were only 2 games, it went into showdowns to decide who would win.  Both teams scored in the 1st round of showdowns.  And in the second round… Dalton Cornett of the Firefighters hit a home run.  Banana Ball rules state if either team hits a home run in the showdowns, it ends there and that team wins.  What an upset! The Firefighters would be going to the Championship game!

Sunday was an afternoon game and it was drizzling when I left the hotel and when I got to the stadium it was absolutely pouring.  Thinking the plaza was opening at 10, I started to head to the VIB entrance, only to be told that they had pushed opening back to 10:30.  I had my poncho on and just hoped I wouldn’t get totally soaked waiting to go inside. (I didn’t, just my shoes/socks did)  They did the VIB in the stands and the ramp is on the opposite side from where they start, so I had to go against everyone to make my way through, but most people and players were helpful in letting me through and moving obstructions out of the way.  The Party Animals once again jumped to an early lead with Jake Skole hitting a home run in the 1st and then ANOTHER in the 4th.  In the 6th, there was the only fan caught out of the series and it was caught by… Savannah Bananas pitcher Zack Phillips!  In the 8th, the Party Animals fell victim to trying to overcome the Tailgaters in trick plays to avoid the new equalizer point that had been introduced (If the away team has more trick plays than the home team after the 8th inning, they get an equalizer point)  After a couple of trick play misses, the Tailgaters scored making it 2-1 and then also won the equalizer point making it 2-2 for the 9th.  Gotta make it stressful and dramatic, huh boys?   The game went into showdowns and after Round 1 both teams scored a run.  In the 2nd rounds, Drew struck out the batter and then Jake Skole was walked and scored the winning run!  The Championship series tomorrow will be Party Animals vs Firefighters.  I hung out a bit at the plaza party to see some of my faves before heading out.

The flight from Savannah to Baltimore was uneventful and I had a 3 hour layover so OF COURSE a wheelchair and pusher were waiting when we landed.  The flight to Hartford ended up getting delayed and got us in about an hour late.  The crew apologized saying that on an earlier trip a bird flew into the windshield so the plane needed to be cleaned as well as inspected. Since there was no damage to the plane they were able to keep flying, but that’s why there was a delay and they weren’t able to make up for it in the air.  Honestly, an hour later than I anticipated is fine with me compared to some of the other flight crap I have had to deal with!

I can’t wait to watch the championship game tomorrow and continue to plan what games I might be going to on the 2026 Tour!

Savannah Bananas in New York

This weekend I went to my final Banana Ball games of the regular season, to see the Savannah Bananas and the Firefighters in Yankee Stadium.  Being a Mets fan, I opted to wear a Mets hat over any of my banana ball team hats.

For Saturday’s game we were up in the 200s section and I was whining about how it was the furthest back I think I have been at any game.  The Firefighters took an early 1-0 lead scoring in the first inning. The Firefighters had 3 fan outs, including 2 back-to-back in the 8th inning.  I don’t think the bananas had any fan outs against them.  Dakota McFadden had a homerun in the 2nd. In the 5th, Eric Jones Jr hit a homerun but it ended up being ruled a triple because he “didn’t touch home plate”, he did touch it with his helmet and said they had touched it with props before in the past and it was never called against them.  Also in the 5th, Dalton Mauldin wanted me to feel like I was closer so he hit a foul ball that almost hit me IN THE FACE.  The guy in front of me tried to catch it, but it bounced off his hands, came at me, and I guess ended up hitting a guy a few rows back in the leg.  The game ended tied and we had 2 rounds of show downs with the bananas coming out victorious in the end.

We also had a LOT of special guests at this game.  The Firefighters were joined by FDNY members and brought out the ‘We Will Never Forget’ banner from the World Trade Center.  Wrestler Damian Priest threw the first banana of the game.  Noah Bridges had a walkup with Sam Tinnesz, Keegan-Michael Key joined the Bananas Foster family.  The half time show was BIG TIME RUSH (!!!) Miguel Cervantes performed a song from Hamilton and Joe Torre was a guest 1st base coach.

Sunday we had VIB and also hit up the K-Club area in the Great Hall. There were quite a few players that we knew would have longer lines in VIB so we hit them up with less people being around – Stilts, RAC (Who told me wearing my Mets hat was a ‘bold move’), Danny Hosley, Jackson Olson and KJ Jackson.  We also met a few of the firefighters before getting escorted to the elevators to make our way down to the field.  They gave us a head start before the rest of the group made their way down the stairs which was nice.  I went over to Reese Alexiades first, as he is also a Mets fan.  He said he had seen me earlier outside but couldn’t get to me and told me how he got to go to the Mets game on Friday and they had good seats and then we talked about David Wright a bit (of course). We also hit up a bunch of other players as well AND got to meet Chief the bat dog. (Which honestly might have been the highlight).  They then had us sit in the stands for a bit in between the end of VIB and the opening of the gates (which is not the norm and most likely when I got sunburned…)

For this game we had really nice, cushiony seats right behind home plate.  They had a bit less on the big name guests, but did honor a lot of first responders including a 100 year old WWII veteran.  We did end up getting guest umpire ELI MANNING and guest hitter Nick Swisher (this is his 3rd year playing on the bananas!).  I spotted Zach Hample and Stephen Kellogg in the stands and also saw Pink, but didn’t realize it was her until I got home!  Ryan Cox got his 200th trick play of the season in the 8th inning.   The Firefighters once again took an early lead, we had 2 firefighter fan outs and 1 bananas fan out.  Dakota McFadden hit another homerun. Alex Ziegler broke a bat that went flying into the stands. The game ended tied 3-3, so we had showdowns again!  In the first round, both teams scored. In the second round, Dalton Cornett scored for the Firefighters, but DR Meadows ended up out at home, leading the Firefighters to a victory.

My stats for my 16 regular season games are:

Party Animals – 2 wins in Savannah, 2 wins in Louisville, 2 wins in Allentown, 2 wins in St Paul
Bananas – 1 win in Savannah, 2 wins in Chicago, 2 wins in Pittsburgh, 1 win in New York
Visitors – 1 win in Louisville
Tailgaters –  0 Wins 🙁
Firefighters –  1 win in New York

My next (and final) games of the season will be the Championship Playoffs in Savannah in a few weeks! I can’t wait to go back to the super tiny ball park.

Savannah Bananas Pittsburgh, PA

Savannah Bananas at PNC Park | Pittsburgh Pirates

This weekend I made my way to Pittsburgh for 2 Savannah Bananas games vs the Texas Tailgaters.  I flew in on Thursday morning and was able to snag a Southwest flight that had a stop in Baltimore but I didn’t need to get off the plane.  Interestingly enough the plane then went on to Nashville and then California and there was at least one gentleman who got on in Baltimore that I was going all the way to Cali on it!  The flight(s?) were uneventful, I got myself a ride to the hotel which was right across the street from PNC Park.  I had debated going to check out early merch but ended up getting wrapped up in a book I was reading and finished it Friday shortly before I needed to head out for the first game!

I made my way through the gates around 2:30 and the Tailgaters were out and about signing. I ended up finding Zach (Bam Bam) Blankenship and giving him one of my disposable cameras and he seemed really excited about having it.  I got to VIB and waited for my friend to meet me and managed to get her in via a much more convenient entrance and we waited to make our way to the field.  It was very exciting that everyone went via a ramp so I didn’t have to wander around to find an elevator.  The ramp however was quite steep.  We went to KJ first as he is my friend’s nephew’s favorite and then made our way around to everyone else. Priorities, you know?  I ended up giving my 2nd camera to Cowboy Kyle.  We then figured out how to get to our seats, which were about 10 rows up from 1st base.  Jesse had teased a BIG guest that we wouldn’t expect for the game.

The game ended up being one of the most exciting ones I think I had ever been to.  The special guest was Mr. Beast, who did a contest to give away $50,000.  He chose 2 seats from the crowd and if his friend got on base one would win $50k, if he got out, the other would.  Well, in that ‘I can’t believe this isn’t scripted’ kind of banana ball way, his friend got out TO A FAN IN THE CROWD.  Mr Beast ended up giving him $10k and then later had his friend bat again and he won another $50k.  The poor girl lost both rounds and went away empty handed.

The Tailgaters were ahead 3-2 after scoring 5 in the 7th, with DR Meadows at the plate in the 8th with about 5 minutes on the clock – I was like “He just needs to hit a homerun, no wait, KJ is up next, he can do it.”  AND HE DID! That tied it 3-3 going into the 9th, but both teams didn’t score so we went into showdowns.  There ended up being THREE rounds of show downs (and we were kind of begging for the game to be done because it was getting chilly!)  For the 3rd round the bases were loaded and EJ ended up hitting a GRAND SLAM to win the game for the bananas!

Saturday my friend and I returned to VIB, while leaving her husband safely in the KClub bar to meet us at our seats later.  This time we decided to forego autographs on the posters and just go for photos with the players and knew we needed to see Jackson and Coach RAC after their lines were too long on Friday.  Of course, we had to see KJ again, pick up my cameras from Bam Bam and Cowboy Kyle (who had forgotten it in his locker but was able to go back to get it) and then saw who else didn’t seem to have long lines and also met Reese, Taj, and Sunshine among a couple of others.  We made our way to the ADA seats and waiting for my friend’s husband to join us.  She grabbed me a drink and banana dog before the crowds got too out of control – and it was soooo good.  I couldn’t eat it like a hotdog like it was intended because of too much chocolate sauce, but I was impressed from the first forkful of strawberries and chocolate sauce.

This game didn’t end up being quite as exciting as Friday’s, but it was still a lot of fun.  We had noticed there was a band set up outside the dugout during VIB and got a glimpse that the drums said “Gym Class Heroes” (which was quickly covered up after we noticed) so we had a pretty good idea that we were getting a musical guest. Travie McCoy ended up joining Dalton for his walkup, falling on his way to the field (which was edited out of the reel the bananas posted) and doing a few songs before Dalton got his at-bat.  We also got 2 former pirates – Freddy Sanchez and Jack Wilson. The Bananas won 2-0 and I think the Tailgaters only had a couple of hits! The game was a whole heck of a lot faster than the night before.

Sunday I overslept, ran around like a crazy person to pack and get out of my hotel room by 11am.  Then I opted to get a “wait and save” ride to the airport – that came in 3 minutes.  My flight wasn’t until 3:45 so I figured I had time to wait – but of course it came quickly.  I also immediately got a wheelchair – again – of course – because I had all the time in the world.

The flights home were quick and easy and I made it home by 9pm! And then I had all of Labor Day to relax.

Just a couple more weeks until my last series of the regular season!

Savannah Bananas in Chicago

Savannah Bananas at Rate Field | Chicago White Sox

This past weekend I headed to Chicago to see the Savannah Bananas and my first Firefighters game of the season. I left Thursday evening and got to my fancy pants hotel. While the room was labeled accessible, the door weighed a ton and I had to ask someone in the hallway for help getting inside. Fortunately that issue only was because I had luggage with me and I managed to get in and out a lot easier the rest of the weekend.

Friday I headed to the stadium a little after 1 and waited for the 2pm doors to open.  When I got in the Bananas were out signing, but KJ’s line was already what appeared to be 30+ minutes long and I didn’t spot anyone else out that I might have wanted to say hello to. I ended up sitting by the stage and then security came and told me they had a seating area in the shade that I could hang out in if I wanted.  The spot ended up being behind the stage and I made a friend to talk baseball with until it was time to go inside.

This game had a TON of fan catches. It tied the record of 6 in one game and 5 of them were in the first 2 innings.  It was wild to see. (Especially since the minor league stadiums didn’t have all that many because a lot of the foul balls went over the top of the stadiums.)  At half time, the special guest was Chance the Rapper who put on a performance for us all. (Do I get to count it as a concert now too?) Dalton Cornett’s Dad was in the White Sox organization and Dalton took an at-bat in his Dad’s jersey.  The special guests were AJ Pierzynski and Mark Buehrle.  AJ even stayed in the game to catch when Mark was pitching.  Peanut got hit by a pitch and was injured.  The bananas ended up winning.

Saturday was a totally different experience – we had VIB – we were escorted into the lobby via elevator and the AC was cranking.  We teased maybe we’d just hang out in there instead, as it was so hot and humid and gross.  (And they had the Mets on TV!)  We made our way out to the field and things were a little bit more chaotic than I had gotten used to with my Party Animals games in minor league stadiums.  We made our way around about halfway, then I realized RAC and some others had really long lines, so we snaked around them and I went to Noah Bridges as he is one of my friend’s favorite players and she had said she wanted a photo of us together.  I ended up mentioning that she could go to Yankee Stadium with me, but is a Red Sox fan and Noah said “let’s make her a video!” and took my phone and recorded a video telling her that he wanted to meet her.  So freaking awesome!  We ended up waiting for Stilts, RAC’s line was no one on our way out so I told him I appreciated how he handled his fall and that kind of reaction was something I needed as a kid having CP and hating falling in front of people and hopefully there are some kids like me out there who will benefit from it. He thanked me for telling him that and gave me a big hug.  I was glad that I saw KJ at the pre-game plaza because I’d have spent the whole time just waiting for him if not!  But that’s definitely something to think about for my future games.

Then when the pre-game stuff started, we knew a storm might be rolling through. Everything was still in pre-game mode and not rain delay mode as far as I could tell, but about 3 minutes in to the game (2 batters worth) the rain started coming down really hard and the tarp was put on the field and the rain delay show began.  It kept everyone entertained but then there was a lightning delay.  Fans were encouraged to go up to the concourse and that players and cast would join then there.  Our seats were covered, so we opted to not move unless staff told us that we HAD to because it seemed safer to stay in the seats than be in a crowd of people. (No one ever told us to leave)  Once the game got going again, the special guests were Ozzie Guillen to coach and Paul Konerko to hit.  With me starting to get into the MLB in 2005, I think this was the first time I knew of all the guests (and even guessed myself a couple that would show up!)  The bananas won once again, 5-2. RAC even had a home run!

I had scheduled an uber for 5:37am for an 8am-ish flight out of O’Hare.  It was making me nervous when it said my driver was running late, but he got to me just about on time and got me to the airport.  I made my way through security, got to the gate and worked on trying to finish my book as I waited to board.  There were a lot of people who had been trying to get on the flight and there was a line of 5-6 people by the time the gate agent showed up.  She let one of the flight attendants down the jetway (I had though the plane came in the night before) and then about 20 minutes before we were supposed to board, the monitor at the gate just changed to “CANCELED”.  What!?  The gate agent said it was due to weather on the way to Hartford.  I called about getting on a new flight and was told there was nothing until TUESDAY (it was Sunday morning) and that they could not get me a hotel or booked on another airline because it was weather related.  I checked my Southwest app too see if they had anything from O’Hare, and nothing was direct, but there was a 10am flight from Midway.  I bought it and hoped I could make it – and embarked on my very own version of “The Amazing Race”.  I couldn’t track down a wheelchair to leave, so I walked myself out (falling once and getting helped up by a couple of nice guys in the security line) got an Uber and made it to midway by 8:15, we’d be boarding at 9:30.  They told me wheelchairs were delayed about 30 mins but I had “plenty of time.”  At 9:10 I started to panic, and they finally bumped me to the top of the line.  Of course, there was a commotion at TSA with the wheelchair in front of us, and then I had to get a pat down because my crotch set off the machine. I could see a clock in the distance saying 9:24 and by the time we got out of the security area it was 9:30.  My pusher hustled us to the gate agent to get a tag for the walker and I ended up boarding between A and B groups instead of pre-boarding.  I was in the 9th row in a window seat but still not convinced we’d be leaving because of this “weather”.  (If it was cleared up by 10, why weren’t we just delayed? The flight paths couldn’t be all that different from ORD and MDW – could they?)   I also realized my seat was broken and knew I’d be the one to be bumped off the completely full flight so I didn’t say a word. (The button to recline was stuck in the pushed in position so any time I leaned back even a little, it went back the whole way)  The flight attendant did end up figuring out it was broken as we were about to land in Hartford – but at that point I had made it!  I ended getting home at 3:30pm, ordering some dinner and then going to sleep for the rest of the night.

My next trip is to Pittsburgh and I have layovers to get there, but I am hoping Southwest will come through for me once again.  Now to just hope my travel insurance will ALSO come through for me with having to had purchase that last minute flight home!  And I canceled my upcoming flight with American when I got home as well.  I do have one I *have* to use them for, but I’m hoping for a better outcome.

Party Animals in St Paul

I kicked off August with my last 2 Party Animals games of the season.  Friday night we opted to show up a bit later as the air quality was terrible because of the smoke from the Canadian wild fires.  We got in, went to the KClub entrance and hung out in the shade until it was just about time for gates to open.  When I decided to start making my way closer to the main concourse, the whole team walked by giving us all high fives as they went.  Despite having VIP tickets for the following night, we had pretty awesome tickets for this game – front row behind home plate!  Andy Cosgrove made an awesome catch over the dug out on the first batter of the game and Noah Fisher fouled out to a fan in the first inning as well.  Tailgaters were out to an early lead, but in the end the Party Animals won, 2-1.

Saturday we got there just as the plaza party was starting and made our way in to the team store to look for book stamps (they were not there, we had to go to fan services) and then checked in for VIP.  We had some time to kill before we needed to head down the field so one friend who wasn’t with us Friday hit up the merch line and then it was time to be escorted to the elevator.  We waited for the go ahead in a tunnel, which a lot of the players went through on their way to the field so we got some early high fives and hellos and we also got farted on by Pharty. (His farts DO smell like cupcakes!)  We finally made our way out to the field and had figured out who we wanted to prioritize and then made our way to as many of the other tables as we could.  I think we ended up only not having time for 1 table.

Our seats for the next game were between home and third and a few rows up, which actually ended up being a bit better of a view overall as there weren’t as many cameras blocking us when there were celebration dances happening.  Cole Kitchen for the Tailgaters pitched 3 really solid innings, Reece Hampton ended up fouling out to a fan in the 8th inning (who are you rooting for fans, Party Animals or Tailgaters? lol) There were no homeruns and the Tailgaters took the early lead again – but Party Animals still ended up getting the win.

Of note: when we got up to Baber at VIP he was saying he didn’t want to be crawling on the ground and he would do it once during the game. We laughed that we popped in at that part of the conversation – but once the 5-2-2 (I think it was the 5th) happened to “Disco Snails” and we saw what he had to do – we realized why he didn’t want to do it anymore than he had to and would be able to do it during the game without practicing it.

After the game we ended up hanging around the party plaza and getting some photos with more of the players as a group and also asking them the very important question – *NSYNC or Backstreet Boys?  In the end it was split, 3-3.  And Vava informed us that he had tried to talk about Hanson in the clubhouse, but everyone is so young they had no idea who he was even talking about. Considering I tell their ages by saying ‘I have Hanson CDs older than him’, he’s not wrong.

I do still have some bananas games coming up, but I definitely will miss my Party Animals!! Here’s hoping I can get back to Savannah before the end of the year to see them, but if not, there’s always the cruise!

Party Animals – Lehigh Valley, PA

After a detour to minor league baseball for July 4th and my friend’s nephews birthday… (which was a very, very boring 5-1 loss)

I was back at it in bananaball-land.  With 3-4 kiddos attending each game with me, it was a lot of fun to see the game through their eyes. And answer all their 39075903472 questions about the rules (the thing that seemed to throw them off the most was how it was scored and why the score didn’t go up if they hit a home run)  This was my first time seeing the Texas Tailgaters in person, but from watching the games online I knew they were going to be a tough team.

Saturday’s game we got there early so the kids could meet some of the players. We ended up meeting 3 Party Animals and 2 Tailgaters before heading to the KClub area where the kids made posters and bracelets.  Unfortunately our seats weren’t in the shade like I hoped they would be and it was a HOT day!  The Party Animals won 3-2, with Nate Tellier getting the start (after we met him before the game!) and Armando Becerra hitting a home run which made the Coke bottle shoot out a firework which was VERY exciting.

Sunday’s game was an afternoon game so we opted to not get there for the pregame plaza party but instead stay afterwards.  The Party Animals once again won 3-2 (I swear to you these games are not scripted) and it was quite an exciting game with the last play of the game being challenged. Indy Stanley had a home run for the Tailgaters with Reece Hampton and Jake Skole having HRs for the Party Animals.

After the game I met Tanner, Telly, Jason Swan, Vava, Andy Cosgrove and had to track down Bronny to see what the heck happened to him after I left him after Louisville.  He fell victim to being a ball magnet during catching drills but said he was fine. By the time I found Bronny they were breaking down the stage and the plaza party was over.  When I was pulling away, Bronny, Fisher and maybe a couple other players still had a line and were still outside meeting everyone!

It’ll be a few weekends before I’m partying again, which will be my last set of Party Animals games for the season unless I can see them in the playoffs in Savannah *fingers crossed*

The Party Animals – Louisville, KY

My new state this year was Kentucky – but it wasn’t a concert this time, instead 3 Party Animal games against The Visitors.  The Visitors are essentially a banana ball try out team and hopefully we will see some of the players on the teams in the future.  With 2 more teams coming next season, I am hopeful that a lot of the players will be making it to teams!

I woke up at 2:30am and made my way to the airport and had a 3 hour layover in Baltimore and managed to get myself a sit down breakfast at Miss Shirley’s, as finally, my gate was close by! (And I landed 2 gates from where I’d be taking off!)  I got to Louisville, took an uber to my hotel, they were able to get me into a room early and I relaxed a bit before heading down to the Louisville Slugger Field for game #1.  I checked in for VIB which was out in the outfield, rode the elevator down with VAVA and got to go by a bunch of their props in the tunnels.  They had posters for both the Party Animals and the Visitors and I tried to get as many signatures from both teams as I could.  I had the same seat for all 3 games and it was a seat in a row all by itself right behind home plate, so they let me go right to it after VIB was over.

Some highlights from Game1: Ashby Vining hit a HR for the Visitors. Baber became the all time trick play leader. Baber hit a HR.  The Party Animals won, 4-1.

Friday morning I went on a tour of the Louisville Slugger museum and factory, which was a lot more interesting than I thought it was going to be. I also learned a lot about bats and hitting that I never really knew despite all the games I have watched.  I got to hold a few MLB players bats, see how they were made from tree to the final finishing touches, get my own mini bat and then hit up the gift shop for 4 more banana ball mini bats. (If I’d need to check a bag home for 1, might as well have 5, right?)

With threats of rain, VIB was moved to closer to home plate for game #2.  This time I opted to do just selfies with the players and ended up with around 20!  The heat and threats of rain seemed to be happening constantly, the tarp wasn’t on the field as long as it was the night before so there weren’t any delays.  Wild weather. I just made sure to keep at least 1 poncho on me at all times and at least 2 fans!  My neck fan was worn for all 3 games and I think I would have been pretty miserable without it.

Some highlights from Game2: Peyton Chatagnier led off the game with a HR for the Visitors, Jordan Brewer hit a HR for the Visitors, Ashby Vining hit *another* HR for the Visitors, The visitors scored in each of t he first 6 innings, and scored 5 in the 8th.  The Visitors won the game 3-2.

Saturday I woke up and was pretty wiped out, I opted out of going to the Ali museum and instead got a ticket for the 1pm Trolley tour.  This was a 90 minute tour around town with a quick stop at Churchill Downs. There is a street/area of beautiful Victorian houses that I’d love to spend more time exploring – and they have extra large sidewalks as well! Perfect for me, if I could afford it!  I learned a lot on the tour – and even got to show off some of my new knowledge during Jeopardy when I got back.  When we got back from the tour, we were right across from the slugger museum and I was going to go back and get the green party animals bat that they had.  I took about 10 steps and got caught in a complete downpour and ran back to the museum that the tour started at and went into their lobby to ride out the brunt of the storm. Heavy rain, thunder, lightning.  Eventually the rain let up, but I took a ride to the ball park instead to get settled in for the last game.

For the 3rd game, VIB was on the concourse since it was actively raining throughout – and SO humid.  The plus side to this meant that I was able to snag myself an ice cream helmet before heading down to my seat once the rain let up.  Fortunately it passed and lightning stopped as well so the game was able to be played. Pharty kept coming out in just his underwear, not sure what was going on there… This time I ended up checking out the after party plaza for a bit as well. It was not quite as chaotic as I thought.  Party Down was a lot of fun!

Some highlights from Game3: Jordan Brewer hit another HR for the Visitors, Baber hit another HR! The Party Animals won, 4-1.

Sunday it was time to get up a little early, head to the airport and head back home… knowing I’d be going to 2 more games the next weekend!

Savannah Bananas vs Party Animals in Savannah

Last year after my birthday game got rained out, I opted to get a credit for a game for the next season.  I thought I would be able to use it for any game, but was told I could only use it for another game in Savannah so I ended up choosing March and then went wild and got myself tickets to all of the games that weekend.  I was hoping I’d be able to make it a weekend with friends, but unfortunately that didn’t end up working out so I rented a car and went solo, but I still think I made the most of it.  There was only 1 item on my list that I  wanted to do and didn’t get to make happen this time.

I left Thursday bright and early and was absolutely shocked to see how packed the airport was compared to my last time there. The valet parking was beyond packed and there was by far the longest pre-check line I had ever seen since they moved it to its new location!  I made it to Baltimore and on to Savannah without any issues and was not really surprised to see they were getting ready for St Patrick’s day.  I went to pick up my rental car and then waited in the lot for it to hit 11am because I needed to grab tickets for Hanson Day weekend.  Once those tickets were secured, I made my way to Grayson Stadium to take some photos and hit up the banana stand.  I got a bananas and party animals foam finger and some others bananas merch, then I went to the green truck pub to get something to eat as it came highly recommended.   Then I made it to the Savannah History Museum to see the bench from Forest Gump as well as some Girl Scouts and other items from Savannah’s history and then it was time to head back to the hotel to try and stay up as late as I could, despite being exhausted.  I made it to about 9pm.

Friday I had scheduled an electric car tour with Savannah Cruzers, whom I highly recommend.  I did a combo tour of historic Savannah as well as Bonaventure Cemetery. They were happy to pick me up right at the hotel door and I ended up being the only one on the tour along with Miss Nancy, a ride along.  The tour was about two and a half hours and I got to see so much more than I would have if I tried to go around by myself.  The car is interesting looking, I kept saying it was the Pope mobile, and we got a lot of laughs and weird looks and waves as we were touring around.  It was also recommended that I read Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, so I have just started that, as there were several locations pointed out to me during the tour.

Then it was time for my first game of the weekend! This would be my only time seeing the bananas play the party animals all season and my first time seeing the party animals at Grayson.  I had VIB so I checked in around 4:15 and at 4:45ish they let us in.  I ended up getting photos with Andy Cosgrove, Tanner and his whole table which included Fisher, Baber, Swan and Andy, and then with RAC, and KJ.  They didn’t have any Party Animals posters yet, so I had everyone just sign the bananas poster – which led to party animals drawing faces on KJ 🙁    Although it was pretty cold, the game was a lot of fun, Andy Cosgrove hit a home run and so did Dan Oberst and the Party Animals won.  After the game I hit up the merch tent and got myself a Pharty plush – AND he farts.  Then I ordered a delivery potato from spudnik to the hotel.

Saturday I had wanted to hit up the Juliette Gordon Lowe house, but the cost of an uber there and back was so high, I decided it wasn’t worth it and took it easy. I went to Walmart and got some Party Animals merch and then took a drive out to Tybee Island.  I had regular grandstand tickets for this game and after claiming my seat went to check out the (free) food options.  It was a beautiful night for baseball and I didn’t need to be wearing my hoodie so I was able to use it to save my spot.   My Birthday Buddy Reece led off the game with a Home Run, Bloomer also had a home run in the same inning, Baber had one in the following inning and the Party Animals won again!

Sunday when I woke up it was raining and the weather seemed to look like it was going to rain all day.  I got to the field early, put a poncho on and got ready for VIB Round 2. This time I brought my Party Animals pennant to solve the problem of them not having a poster.  Due to the rain, the meeting was on the concourse, so I had to go back and forth to get up the ramp, but it kind of forced you to meet all the players who were up there, so I got tonnnns of signatures.  I ended up getting photos with Bronny, Tanner, Reese and KJ.  (Funny enough, the 3 bananas I got photos with all hit HRs the following weekend at Raymond James Stadium – the NFL stadium – coincidence?)  Andy Archer didn’t like that I had my Party Animals hat on but I let him know that I switched my jersey from the past 2 games so that should hopefully help the bananas win – and sure enough – I was right.  No Home Runs for the Party Animals but there was one for RAC!  After the game I loaded up my luggage with my last minute merch purchases (All-Star baseball cards) and made my way to the airport.  Somehow the weather cooperated for the game.

I returned the car and made it to the gate with plenty of time to spare – 2 planes took off before mine – got some dinner and was beyond ready for my own bed.  When we landed in Baltimore we landed in some weird area of the airport and they weren’t sure how to work the jetbridge.  Finally it worked, but they had no wheelchair pusher.  I was stranded but was assured someone had been called.  Finally someone came and got me to the gate for Hartford and all was well.

Despite being alone I had a lot of fun at the games and am looking forward to going to many more this summer! Even if August is my next bananas game and as KJ said, is “sooo far away!” (But I’m sure will be here before I know it!)
