Future Now Tour – Mohegan Sun 7/6/16

Wednesday night the Honda Civic Tour / Future Now Tour made a stop at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville (or, based on the hashtags they were encouraging us to use on the screens, Hartford.)  Before the show, Nick Jonas had a soundcheck Party for those who pre-ordered his album through his website.  Of course, this was Part I of Christine and Katie do stupid things (for that day – I’ve lost count of how many we’re at now) and arrived at the venue at 2:15, as we were told… and spent the rest of the day waiting in line.

Mike Posner was the opening act, who I was not at all looking forward to seeing. His set appeared to be relatively short – until he sat at the end of the stage for a bit and then started… a poem of sorts that started with “I am Jesus Christ” (read a sort of transcript here: https://www.evernote.com/shard/s535/sh/c36328dd-3b41-491f-afd7-b5f3f7f83b43/1768dc183d95be0bef93d382187fc59d)  To me, it didn’t seem like the right place or the right time and if we didn’t love distractions he wouldn’t have a career and a million dollars to spend on girls and shoes (distractions!) It just totally rubbed me the wrong way and I was left so dumbfounded over it, I kind of couldn’t get into Nick’s set for a bit because I was still just like… wtf?  Seriously regretted our earlier plans to miss his set after that!!

Nick started off the show, then Demi and they did some songs together as well.  At one point Nick was giving Demi a compliment, I think he said that she had been singing her ass off, but Demi couldn’t hear him so he had to repeat it.  The stage set up was really cool too, the backdrop of the stage was basically a giant screen – filled with all sorts of imagery throughout the sets and of course – BACON.

Overall it was a really fun tour and I am glad that we had such great seats to check it out!

Virtual Race: Half Blood Prince Marathon

20160612_194926

Race Title: The Half-Blood Prince Half Marathon
Distance: 13.1 miles
Company: Hogwarts Running Club
Charity: Project Purple

This is the first of the Hogwarts Running Club races I did.  They do about 6 a year.  I am in the middle of their current race (more on that to come – if ever finish it) and they do a Time Turner event each fall where you can catch up on any races you may have missed.  They also have a challenge medal and the opportunity to become a perfect prefect which is what I am going to go for – provided I ever finish the current race 😉

GameReview: Punderdome

punderdomeI have had some friends tell me about the new game punderdome and how they wanted to try it out. So I decided to give it a try. I am not “punny” and usually any puns I made were not intended because that is just not how I think.  The punderdome game has 200 cards included which prompt you for two items that you must make a pun out of. This game works best in large groups, as one person judges all the puns written down and the winner of that round becomes the judge for the next, and so on.  I like this rule because if you have one friend who is really good at making terrible puns, they can only win every other round which gave me a chance to maybe win sometimes as well. The game also has the option for prizes. There are two envelopes and the prizes can be decided on by the host and the winner can choose an envelope – one can be a fun prize and one a booby prize to make things a little bit more fun! I found that I was getting better with my puns the more I played, so I think with more practice perhaps I might be just a little bit punny.

I received a free copy of this game in order to write this review, I was not otherwise compensated.

Book Review: Pitching My Heart

pitchingI was drawn to this book not only because it was a sports romance book, which I love to read, but also because the main character’s name was just one letter off from mine.  Turns out, that’s not a great reason to pick a book to read because you spend the whole book thinking there’s a typo in it.  Fortunately, Katryn goes by Kat through most of the book. Fortunately I was also able to get over that and enjoy the story!

Back in college, Kat went on a date with hot shot pitcher Weston Dukes.  It ended horribly and Kat ran off and the two never saw each other again… or at least not for the next 5 years. (And as much as I want to say what happened on the date, I’ll refrain because it was her recollection of the disaster of a date that got me hooked on this book!)  Kat is a sports writer and her boss wants her to get an interview with Weston. Only one problem, Weston doesn’t DO interviews.  But she calls to try and get one with him anyway – and remembering her from his past he agrees to the interview – mainly because he just wants to see her again.

In true baseball romance fashion he wants her, she has walls, he’s trying to break them down.  Meanwhile… West’s ex shows up with a bombshell of an announcement – she has a 3 year old son and he is West’s son and her new husband wants nothing to do with the child so she is giving up all her parental rights to West.  Now he is left dealing with a new relationship with Kat and a new relationship with the son he never knew he had.

West’s ex, Coco, proves to be the source for a lot of drama and is what causes this book to be such an emotional roller coaster – as well as what sets it apart from a bunch of the other books of this type I have read.

Definitely worth a read!

I received a free e-copy of this book in order to write this review, I was not otherwise compensated.

A previous relationship has left him bitter and cynical. When he’s approached for the interview with Katryn, he can’t help but remember how horribly things ended with their date. What happens when he accepts the interview and sparks begin to fly between them? Will they catch the pitch love has thrown at them or will they both strike out?

Virtual Race: You’ve Got A Friend In Me

20160612_194931

Race Title: You’ve Got A Friend In Me
Distance: 1 mile
Company: VirtualRunnerUK
Charity: MAMA Academy

This race was a challenge because you had to choose your distance (1mi, 5k, 10k, etc) and do it all IN ONE GO.  Most of the other virtual races are fine if you break it up over several outings.  I had never purposely walked a mile all at once before which is why I decided to go for this race.  It was supposed to be done in June, but I did mine over Memorial Day Weekend.  I ended up doing another mile in one go since then as well.  I have a ways to go, but I’m hoping to eventually be able to do 5k in one go.

Virtual Race: Andrea Barber 4.0 Mile Birthday Run

20160628_193233Race Title: Andrea Barber’s 4.0 Mile Birthday Run
Distance: 4.0 Miles
Company: Andrea Barber
Charity: Girls On The Run

This was a limited edition race that Andrea Barber (Kimmy Gibbler from Full House) put on in order to raise money for her 40th birthday for Girls On The Run.  The race had to be 4.0 miles and you could run, walk or Gibbler gallop!  Included in the registration package was a t-shirt, the medal and a signed photo from Andrea as well!

Product Review: YRU Sneakers

I typically wear a size 8, though I have a wide foot so based on other reviews of these shoes I ordered a size up and got a 9. I got the floral print, though I was really hoping for the metallic sneakers, but unfortunately they were sold out in the size I needed. These shoes are very comfortable and are great for taking walks in. They are light weight which is definitely appreciated when on a long walk! The shoes fit though may be a tad bit too long, but in order to fit the rest of my wide foot in it, that’s the trade off.

I received a product at a discount in order to write this review.

Book Review: Saved by the Boats

boatsSaved by the Boats is considered a children’s book, but I learned a lot from it as well.  Everyone is aware of what happened in New York City on September 11, 2001.  I wasn’t aware of how the boats helped people get off the island.  I mean, it makes sense, but I don’t ever remember hearing any stories about the boats and I watched footage for days in the days after the attacks.  The author of this book, Julie Gassman, was one of those people who was in the city on September 11th and took one of the boats to New Jersey after the towers fell.  The descriptions are haunting and I can’t even imagine what it felt like to be there on that day.

I received a free e-copy of this book in order to write this review. I was not otherwise compensated.

About the book

September 11, 2001 was a black day in U.S. history. Amid the chaos, sea captains and crews raced by boat to the tragic Manhattan scene. Nearly 500,000 people on Manhattan Island were rescued that day in what would later be called the largest sea evacuation in history. In this rarely told story of heroism, we come to understand that in our darkest hours, people shine brightly as a beacon of hope.
For ages 6-10.
About the Author: The youngest in a family of nine children, Julie Gassman grew up in Howard, South Dakota. After college, she traded in small-town life for the world of magazine publishing in New York City. She now lives in southern Minnesota with her husband and their three children.
About the Illustrator: Steve Moors is a British/American artist living in New York. His work has appeared in numerous publications, including Time magazine, RollingStone, The New York Times, The Atlantic, and Boston Globe magazine. He was originally trained by Magnum Photos agency member David Hurn in documentary photography, later turning to illustration to satisfy his need for complete artistic autonomy. Steve has lived in Manhattan with his wife and two children since 2000. He was in Manhattan when the planes struck the Twin Towers on 9-11. He hopes this book will help explain to the younger generation both the tragedy and heroism that happened on that fateful sunny day.

Book Review: Dishing Up Minnesota

minnesotaDishing Up Minnesota contains 150 recipes from the land of 10,000 lakes.  I haven’t yet been to Minnesota, but hopefully I will make it there one day! Turns out there are actually more like 11.842 lakes in Minnesota – but 10,000 is such a nice round number.  It’s no surprise that a lot of the recipes included are seafood.  There are also several recipes with mushrooms and many, many based on vegetables and fruit.  I also didn’t realize that Minnesota made its own Maple Syrup as well! Of course, my favorite chapter was the ones with the burgers and chicken! Boy do the roasted smashed red river potatoes with sage and bacon sound good too!

This book is a great way to learn more about the state as well as try out tons of tasty recipes!!
