Book Review: Baseball’s Game Changers

gamechangersBaseball’s Game Changers focuses on 50 items that changed the game of baseball whether it be players, rules, breaking of rules, etc.  The author has ranked them by how they have altered the game.  Some of the people featured are Babe Ruth and Jackie Robinson.  Other game changers is Television contracts and of course the book wouldn’t be complete without talking about all the steroid scandals as well.  Some of the changes were for the better of the game and others were not.  I think that any baseball fan would enjoy reading this book and seeing how the authors list matches up with their own!

Book Review: Middle Eight

middleeightWhen I first started reading this book I was a bit confused because I thought it was going to be music related.  We first meet Ray and her husband is going after her with a knife, and cuts her.  She had been planning on leaving him anyway and had already been packed.  The plan that she had in her head of getting away from Joe and getting to her mother’s house seemed perfect in her head, but not so perfect as she is trying to actually put it in place.

Ray ends up at a bar and she meets a woman in the bathroom who helps give her a “makeover” so she won’t have to pay for any drinks all night.  She ends up getting really, really drunk and when she gets back to her car, it won’t start.  The drummer of the band that was playing in the club ends up letting her crash at his place for the night and subsequently several nights while she tries to figure out what she is going to do next and avoid her crazy husband who may be coming after her with a knife.

I need to mention that this book takes place in 1997 through the early 2000s – mostly insignificant aside from the fact that the whole rest of the story hinges on the fact that Ray and the drummer, Van, can’t get in contact with each other because Ray doesn’t have a cellphone and there’s no such thing as social media for them to reconnect on.  Van ends up driving Ray to her mother’s farm and leaves her there even though he wants her to come back with him.  He has to go to a gig and ends up joining the band Wanderlust because their drummer is sick and he is filling in.  Wanderlust ends up getting bigger and bigger, their biggest single being a song about Ray.  When the label wants them to move more Pop, Van tries to find his muse again (Ray) but when he goes to the farm she’s not there and his note for her with his number goes undelivered.

When Ray ends up figuring out that 4 of the songs on the band’s new CD must be about her, she finds a way to get to a show and tries to get backstage.  She sends a message to Van with a couple of roadies and hopes that it will get to him.  Once Van find out Ray is there, he comes running to her and they end up heading to the bus… Paparazzi catch them and Van has seemed to have forgot that he is currently dating America’s Sweetheart & Disney Starlet. Things go out of control and Ray worries that she may have just pulled a Yoko Ono…

Throughout it all Ray ends up with a few realizations about her life and now Van and Ray need to figure out how to smooth things over as there are shows being canceled because of picketers outside the venues!

I really liked this book and how Ray and Van figured out that they were each others “middle eight” which is describes as the “point in a song where things change up, usually after the first couple of verses.” I really loved that and I liked how they worked it into the story in several different relationships.  I’m really bummed that this is appearing to be a standalone book and there won’t be more.  The ending of the book while complete still left me wanting to find out more and what happened next!

Recap: I know I took photos at this show because I remember wrapping my camera in my overnight clothes and that is how I snuck it in. Cannot find them for the life of me now.  They’ll probably turn up after I post this.  This was the night we almost went down a one way the wrong way.   We also ended up walking down the  street behind Zac and his wife, who had apparently gone up the street to pick up the latest Harry Potter book before heading to the show. (Doors were already opened when we arrived)  This show was also the day after my birthday so that was a lot of fun too!

Why?

Why is a question I get asked a lot – especially when it comes to Hanson.  Why are you going to Oklahoma? Why are you going to Jamaica, again? Why do you have to see Hanson in concert so many times?

And to be quite honest it’s not something that I can easily put into words. I feel like in order to truly understand Why? you have to be a part of it.  Case in point, I was sitting on a couch in the lobby of the resort in Jamaica last month and one of the staff members asked – “Why?” Why do you travel to see them? Why do you do this?  I was with 2 of my friends and we kind of just sat there… I said “It’s fun!” Which wasn’t a lie but also wasn’t properly explaining anything either and then he said (probably not verbatim) “I saw their performance last night.  I get it. I get why you travel for them.”  And it was probably one of the best reactions I’ve ever had the privilege of hearing.

It has gotten to the point now where seeing Hanson is (almost) just a bonus.  I’m more excited to see my friends.  Friends from around the world.  In the past year or so I’ve become pretty close with a group of Hanson fans and on any given day I could be talking to someone from pretty much any corner of the world.  And no, we don’t just talk about Hanson all day.  While it may have began that way, we’ve  formed real relationships so we talk about what you would talk about with any of your friends.  The only difference is for most people their friends live probably in the same state as them and they can hang out face to face more often.  We can’t, so we use these Hanson events as semi-regular excuses to see each other again.

The last night in Jamaica, even though we were bummed to have to be going home after having a great week together – but we didn’t say “goodbye”, we said “see you in Tulsa”.  Hanson Day Weekend is just around the corner! (Kind of.) And when we leave Tulsa in May, once again for most of us it won’t be goodbye, it will be “See you in Jamaica” or “See you on tour” (Assuming one is announced *fingers crossed*)

It’s kind of sad that so many people don’t seem to “get it” because I wish that everyone had this sort of support system and community!

Idol Thoughts -Top 24 Week 1

IdolThoughts

Wednesday and Thursday last week we got our first taste of the Idol Top 24.  12 of the contestants performed on Wednesday as a solo performance.  On Thursday past Idol contestants Lauren Alaina, Caleb Johnson, Ruben Studdard, Nick Fradiani, Fantasia and Scotty McCreery returned to do duets with the Top 12. (Each past Idol performed twice.)  When I first heard that some of the past contestants will be coming back for the duets I got SO excited.  It was also nice to see them mentoring as well since they had all been through it before, and prevailed.  Everyone but Lauren had won their season – and Lauren came in 2nd so it wasn’t a bad bunch of Idols!

I found it interesting that the song choices for the duets were more catered to the past Idols – songs that they had done in the past – than catering to the new class of Idols that we need to begin forming relationships with.  It’s like they were purposely trying to make the past Idols shine more and say “look what you can be” rather than having something catered to the newer Idols – which may have made the past idols struggle a bit. (Although I guess if the past Idols looked bad it wouldn’t really show the show off)

Here are my thoughts on the performances – based on the order they went in on Wednesday night.

Before the show started my Mom made her pick for the season on who was going to win with Stephany.  She came out first and did Jessie J’s “Mamma Knows Best”.  While I think Stephany can sing, there was something about her and the performance that I didn’t like but I couldn’t my my finger on.  For duet night she did “Superstar” with Ruben.  I thought they had an awesome duet and my prediction for Stephany is that she would be safe.

Second up for the night was Mackenzie.  I liked him on The Voice but I don’t like him being on Idol.  Although I’m sure I’ll get over that in a couple of weeks.  I just don’t like when they already have an established fan base.  But he is good.  He did “Say Something” for his solo performance.  His duet was with Lauren, “I Hope You Dance”, Lauren was just smitten with him.  I really liked how he is not country and Lauren is and he was still able to make the song his own. My prediction is that Mackenzie is safe.

Next up was Jeneve.  She performed “Angel” with a harp.  I think that is the first time that the main performer has ever used a harp on Idol.  Her performance was interesting, but I’m not sold on her.  She did “Gone” with Scotty as her duet and it was a MESS.  I don’t know what happened and I think the judges agreed.  I think that Jeneve will be going home.

Jenna Renae did “My Church” as her solo performance which I don’t think I had ever heard before. I liked the performance.  Her performance of “See You Tonight” with Scotty was really great as well and I loved that Scotty did his “baby lock them doors” on their teaser before the commercial break.  My prediction is that Jenna Renae will be safe.

James VIII did a pretty awesome version of Kanye’s Love Lockdown. This was my favorite performance up until this point on solo night.  He got stuck with Caleb for his solo and they did “Gimme Shelter” which wasn’t as bad as I was expecting, since I think Caleb is awful.  My prediction is James will be safe.

Sonika did “Safe and Sound” for her solo performance.  I really like Sonika but was not a fan of this performance.  Sonika also got the unfortunate task of being paired with Caleb, but I think their performance of “Skyfall” really worked.  I predict that Sonika will be safe and sound.

Gianna Isabella did “I Put A Spell On You” for her solo.  I don’t think that she is all that good, she screams a lot.  I think her mother knowing Jennifer has definitely helped her out a bit and it shouldn’t.  She did “Beautiful Life” with Nick for her duet and it was super awkward and I actually really like that song. I predict Gianna will be leaving us.

Emily Brooke did “I Am Invincible” – while she has grown a lot since last season, this was a really bad performance. I am not sure if she could hear herself in the in ear monitors and that is why it was so bad. Her duet was with Lauren, Flat on the Floor, which was a lot better than the night before, but Lauren sang circles around her.  I think that Emily will be leaving the show.

Avalon did “Love Yourself” I love that she is staying true to herself and wearing comfy clothes on stage! She has a great voice too.  I hope that she sticks around for a while and isn’t forced into outfits / makeup that she doesn’t want to wear.  Her duet was with Ruben – and it was another great performance! Ruben did really, really good with his duets.  He didn’t try to out sing them and made his partners look good.

Jordan did “All By Myself” there is just something about him that I haven’t liked since the auditions when he was celebrating.  I didn’t like this performance either. He’s too broadway and over the top.  His duet with with Fantasia.  He tried to out sing her… which I’m not sure there is anyone out there that can actually pull it off.  I really hope that Jordan is all by himself on the way home.

Thomas Stringfellow did Creep and the rendition was a little bit weird for me.  I think he’s cute though and have liked his previous performances.  His duet was with Nick on Man in the Mirror and I couldn’t help but think he’d be better off doing this one with Kris! I didn’t like whatever weird hiccup things he was doing with his voice.  While I would love for him to stick around, I think he will be leaving us.

La’Porsha is a force to be reckoned with.  She is the front runner from this group of 12! She did a amazing rendition of Proud Mary on night 1 and her duet of Summertime with Fantasia for the second night just blew me away.  I think at this point it is her competition to lose.  And her baby is just so cute!  Needless to say, I think La’Porsha will be sticking around for quite some time.

Who I thought would be going home:  Thomas, Jeneve, Gianna, Emily, Jordan.

Who went home: Emily, Jordan, Stephany, Jenna, James

I definitely would have traded out Jeneve and Gianna for Stephany and James VIII if I was a judge.  I only correctly picked 2 of the 5!  Hopefully I will do better this week!

Music Monday: Paul McDonald Slow Rising

paulmcdonald

Bright Lights
Slow Rising
Never Get Over You
Hands On Me
So Bad
Modern Hearts
Renegades
Once You Were Mine
First Loves

I got to listen to this CD a bit early – because Paul did a lot of the tracks live on the Roots and Rock N Roll Tour when I saw him open for Hanson.  The CD was technically released in the middle of last month, but I got my copy earlier since I pledged on his kickstarter project to help him earn the funds to record it.  Before listening to it – I could have told you my favorite track would have been Renegades – my favorite of his set from tour.  After listening to the CD over and over for several hours, Renegades was still my favorite. This seems to be a very vulnerable and personal release for Paul – after a whirlwind romance to Nikki Reed they got divorced and Nikki quickly married Ian Somerholder. Now Paul is left to pick up the pieces of himself and you can tell that he is working on it by listening to the lyrics of his songs.

Product Review: RFID-Blocking Passport Wallet from LemurGear

A lot of times when I am traveling I see an older couple show up wearing some sort of lanyard/wallet around their neck with their ID and passport in it.  I used to make fun of them. How touristy of them!  Except that now the more that I travel, the more time I have spent trying to juggle all my important documents and keep track of where the heck I last put them.  How did my boarding pass end up at the bottom of my purse? Which pocket did I put my ID in? Is my passport still on my person?  Now that I’m getting older I am realizing that maybe these older couples are on to something!

Recently I received a free Lemur Gear roomy passport wallet.  It can easily fit my passport (in 1 of 3 areas), credit card, boarding pass, and ID out and at the ready.  The wallet can then be worn around my neck so I am hands free! And even better yet, the wallet has RFID-blocking technology which can help prevent the theft of your credit card numbers.  Keep everything organized and easy to grab when you need them.  If you want, you can even tuck the wallet inside your shirt where it is so thin, it will hardly be noticed.

• Adjustable lanyard for a customizable fit.
• RFID-blocking material prevents data theft.
• Lightweight, water-resistant nylon protects against spills.
• Holds multiple passports, money, phone, credit card & more.
• Wear around your neck or cross-body style.
• Clear front window lets you view ID, passport & more without removal.

Book Review: Team Chemistry

chemistryTeam Chemistry talks all about the abuse of drugs and alcohol in baseball, from the past and the present.  It touches a bit on other sports as well, such as the NFL and bike racing.  Drinking has always been a problem, but it was not often written about by reporters. Tobacco is also an issue.  The book also talks about the evolution of drug use throughout the sport.  Certainly an interesting deeper look into the lives of some baseball players and their addictions as well as talk about the more recent steroid era and the Mitchell Report and its fall out throughout the sport.

About the Book

In 2007, the Mitchell Report shocked traditionalists who were appalled that drugs had corrupted the “pure” game of baseball. Nathan Corzine rescues the story of baseball’s relationship with drugs from the sepia-toned tyranny of such myths. In Team Chemistry , he reveals a game splashed with spilled whiskey and tobacco stains from the day the first pitch was thrown. Indeed, throughout the game’s history, stars and scrubs alike partook of a pharmacopeia that helped them stay on the field and cope off of it: In 1889, Pud Galvin tried a testosterone-derived “elixir” to help him pile up some of his 646 complete games.Sandy Koufax needed Codeine and an anti-inflammatory used on horses to pitch through his late-career elbow woes.Players returning from World War II mainstreamed the use of the amphetamines they had used as servicemen.Vida Blue invited teammates to cocaine parties, Tim Raines used it to stay awake on the bench, and Will McEnaney snorted it between innings. Corzine also ventures outside the lines to show how authorities handled–or failed to handle–drug and alcohol problems, and how those problems both shaped and scarred the game. The result is an eye-opening look at what baseball’s relationship with substances legal and otherwise tells us about culture, society, and masculinity in America.

Book Review: Every Anxious Wave

everyanxiousThis book started out really fun.  Karl finds a wormhole in his closet and with his tech saavy friend Wayne, they figure out a way to send you back to any rock concert you want to go to, for a fee, of course.  The rules are you can only travel backwards and you can’t take any photos or audio, don’t talk to anyone, don’t touch anyone, don’t do any drinking or drugs and don’t leave the venue.  Things are going well, the two are making a lot of money…

Then Wayne decides that he wants to go back to December 1980 and save John Lennon from being killed. Karl doesn’t want to send him because he doesn’t want to mess with the past and therefore affect the future, but Wayne has him send him anyway.  Except that Karl makes a typo and ends up sending Wayne to the year 980 and can’t figure out how to get him back.

He has to find an astrophysicist to help, and that is when we meet Lena.  Lena and Karl hit it off and although she is technically Karl’s employee they begin a relationship.  But then time travel becomes more than just traveling back to see rock shows.  And things become more and more complicated as the future is being changed more and more.  Lena goes back to a defining moment in her life and changes it – and makes it so she and Karl never ended up meeting.

But the universe and time travel moves in mysterious ways and maybe they will be back together in some alternate reality… or the future.

I really liked this book. It was fun in the beginning to see what concerts everyone wanted to go to (my first thought was to see The Beatles at Shea Stadium, and of course, a ton of Hanson concerts!) But I knew that once they started altering their pasts things would get a bit crazy.  It was also interesting to see how Wayne’s life in 980 kind of paralleled where Karl ended up (I won’t give too much more than that away)  A really fun sci-fi book with a hint of rock n roll.

About the Book

Good guy Karl Bender is a thirty-something bar owner whose life lacks love and meaning. When he stumbles upon a time-travelling worm hole in his closet, Karl and his best friend Wayne develop a side business selling access to people who want to travel back in time to listen to their favorite bands. It’s a pretty ingenious plan, until Karl, intending to send Wayne to 1980, transports him back to 980 instead. Though Wayne sends texts extolling the quality of life in tenth century “Mannahatta,” Karl is distraught that he can’t bring his friend back.

Enter brilliant, prickly, overweight astrophysicist, Lena Geduldig. Karl and Lena’s connection is immediate. While they work on getting Wayne back, Karl and Lena fall in love — with time travel, and each other. Unable to resist meddling with the past, Karl and Lena bounce around time. When Lena ultimately prevents her own long-ago rape, she alters the course of her life and threatens her future with Karl.

A high-spirited and engaging novel, EVERY ANXIOUS WAVE plays ball with the big questions of where we would go and who we would become if we could rewrite our pasts, as well as how to hold on to love across time.
