Book Review: Caillou Emma’s Extra Snacks

snacksCaillou, Emma’s Extra Snacks is a story about Type 1 Diabetes. Caillou sees his friend Emma eating extra snacks so he thinks it is snack time for him too. His teacher explains that it is not snack time for him and tells the class about diabetes.  Caillou is very concerned for Emma and wants to help her out by getting her sweater, carrying her backpack and mayybeee letting her win on track and field day. Ok, maybe not.  She doesn’t seem to act that sick to Caillou, but Emma explains more to him about her diabetes and how she is not sick, she just has to manage it every day so she doesn’t get dizzy.  A nice way for kids to learn a bit about diabetes.

Book Review: Caillou Lights Out!

lightsoutIn Caillou, Lights Out! There is a winter storm outside.  While Caillou is washing his hands, the power goes out!  Caillou doesn’t know what that means, so his Daddy has to tell him. Then he goes in the basement with Daddy to find a flash light.  The family ends up camping in the living room – even roasting marshmallows over the fire!  Caillou is too scared to go to bed in his dark room, so the family sets up their sleeping bags in the living room.  When the power goes on in the middle of the night, Caillou asks if he can stay sleeping downstairs and his dad says ok!

Recap:

In addition to this concert, we also got to see some of John’s soundcheck because of his fanclub. We had 5th row seats for the show and if I am remembering right, my camera broke just before this show so in order to take pictures you had to actually look through the view finder, the screen on the back was busted.  Good thing cameras then had both – now my camera doesn’t even have the view finder, just a screen!  This was probably on of my favorite John shows – he did almost all of my favorite songs in this set!

Downside – on the way home, just around the corner from my house, my car slipped on some ice and hit the guard rail.  A cop happened to drive by right after who actually went to UMASS Amherst where the concert was and a nice guy helped me get my car unstuck from the snow bank.  Unfortunately, the front headlight did have some damage from the guard rail but otherwise everything was ok!

Music Monday: Andrew Ripp Self-Titled

andrewripp

Deep Water
Falling Faster
Surviving
Hole In My Heart
Animal
I Can’t Help Myself
Killin Me
Waiting Room
Lies
Never Forget You

If you don’t know who Andrew Ripp is, you really should take the time to fix that – after you finish reading this post, that is! He is a great singer songwriter currently living in Nashville. I was introduced to him when he opened for David Cook although I had heard great things about him from a few of my friends too and for whatever reason I decided to be stupid and ignore them.  “Andrew Ripp” is the latest release from Andrew and I got the chance to review this CD in a bit of a different fashion than what I usually do.  While I do sometimes bring CDs to work to listen to, I don’t often find myself so annoyed on a Wednesday before Thanksgiving break that I am praying that I once again didn’t bother to clean out my purse after the last couple of concerts so that I have  CD or two in there to listen to.  I did end up having 3 of Andrew’s CDs that I picked up after the concert in there. And while I would have liked to listen to all 3 of them – the annoyance that was going on around me did not lend itself to allow me to take the 15 seconds to take one CD out of the player and replace it with a new one without being even more annoyed.

Allow me to set the scene (and sorry Andrew this is less of a CD review than a rant on my coworker…) It’s about 8:30 am.  A loud coworker shows up and he cannot log on to his computer without getting a temporary profile pop up.  This is the 3rd time it has happened in as many weeks.  After a “did you turn it off and on again” that is still not working – co worker decides to call “the help desk”.  The only thing the help desk is good for is MAKING YOU GO INSANE.  So while this phone call has now been going on for 30 minutes and I fear my head might explode, I pop Andrew Ripp into the CD Player and pop on my headphones that are usually too painful if I have them on for more than 20 minutes at a time… and hope that I turned it up loud enough to drown out said help desk phone call.

FOUR HOURS LATER I have listened to Andrew’s CD 3 times in a row and fear that if this phone call goes on any longer I will end up singing along with all of the CD because it’s been repeated in my head enough that I know almost all the words now.  I have also decided that my favorite song on the CD is “Animal”.  And I have also decided that I was oh so ever thankful that the CD was actually so good that I could bear to listen to it 3 times in a row without going even more insane than I would have gone without it.

So there you have it.  If you need something really good to drown out really loud coworkers… Andrew Ripp is your guy!

So, You Want To Go To MOE?

MOE

With the dates for Hanson Day (aka “MOE” or Members Only Event) having been announced for 2016 I thought I’d put something together to help those who have never gone before since a lot of the same questions have been asked.

This year Hanson Day will be celebrated on May 20 & 21st and The Hop Jam will be on May 22nd in Tulsa, OK.

In order to go – you must be a Hanson.net paid member.  If you’re not yet, join.  If you are reading this and it is 2015, get a 2015 membership.  If it is 2016 when you are reading this, get a 2016 membership.  Those of you who join in 2015 will receive the 2015 “Inside the Box” EP in the mail.  The 2016 EP will be released at Hanson Day weekend and can be picked up there by members who have paid their membership fees through 2017.  So if you paid for your membership in 2015, while you’ll be a valid member through May 2016 to attend MOE, you won’t be able to pick up your new kit UNLESS you renew early. (A cut off date is usually announced, but I’d suggest to do it in or before April)  Your membership will be good for another year from the date you originally joined and you’ll get to pick up the kit and take it home with you at MOE.

For example – if you joined December 18, 2015 as a 2015 member your membership would be good through December 18, 2016. (This date can be found on your account profile page.)  If you renew for 2016 on April 1, your membership will be extended to December 18, 2017 thus making you eligible to pick up the 2016 member kit at MOE 2016.

Where to Stay

Most of the events happen in the Brady Arts District in Downtown Tulsa.  The closest hotel is the Fairfield Inn.  This hotel is pretty small so it books up fast.  There is also the Hyatt about a mile walk away that is much bigger, but is either sold out for the weekend already, or has not yet released all the rooms.  These are the only hotels I have personally stayed at but there are several others within a mile or two of the area. I have heard a new hotel just opened by the BOK Center which is probably a mile or two from all the activities.  Hotels that do not have a shuttle from the airport will be about a $20-$30 cab or uber ride.

Do I Need a Car?

This depends on what you want to do.  If you are coming in early or staying later and want to explore more of Tulsa, I’d say yes.  If you are only coming in for Fri-Sun, you will probably be kept busy with so many Hanson activities that you won’t really need one if you are staying within walking distance.  If you are attending movie night – this is a distance from the rest of the activities and you will either need a car or to take a cab or uber there.

When Should I Come?

Activities with Hanson won’t officially kick off until about noon-time on Friday, but typically Thursday afternoon you are able to check in to the event and get your wristband as well as go shopping at the Hanson store.  In the past items have sold out after Thursday and were not restocked. This year they did end up getting everyone for sale online as well so it’s up to you.  As I mentioned above, if you want to see more of Tulsa you should either come early or stay later as they do tend to keep the weekend jam-packed with activities.

What activities are free?

All activities require a Hanson.net Membership ($40+shipping).  Free with your RSVP is access to the Hanson Store, access to the Hanson Gallery, Photos with the band, Access to State of the Band, and the Members Only Concert.

The Hop Jam concert on Sunday is also free and open to the public (so you do not need to be a Hanson.net member to attend) and this past year they did offer VIP Upgrades which gave you access to the beer garden early as well as merchandise.

What are the add on activities and how much are they?

Use these prices as an estimate as they are subject to change. Once they are released for sale, tickets will be in the Hanson.net store for those who RSVPed.

Movie Night – $12
Fan Club Dinner – $22 (Friday night and Saturday night, choice of Caz’s Chowhouse and Mexicali’s)
Street Team Leaders Dinner – $22 (available for street team leaders only)
Lectures / After Party – $25 (This is a packaged deal which gets you access to Isaac, Taylor and Zac’s lectures as well as the after party after the members only concert. They are not available separately)
Bowling – $50 (this also includes a t-shirt)

Where Should I Fly To?

Tulsa has an International Airport (TUL) that is serviced by many airlines. Oklahoma City is a couple of hours away and also has an airport. I am not sure the best way to get from OKC to Tulsa without renting a car – if anyone has experience let me know and I will add it in!

How Is The Weather?
Unpredictable.  Pack for all seasons.  Some years have been rainy, windy and cold, others have been so hot that you wish you packed a pair of shorts and some years have been all of the above all wrapped into one.  I’ve had years I brought nothing but a hoodie and regretted it, years I packed only jeans and regretted it and finally this year I found a happy medium with shorts, capris and jeans all in my bag!

RSVP is now up on Hanson.net – Just go to the calendar page once you are logged in to click the button to RSVP!  If you later realize you are no longer able to go, just click it again to un-RSVP.  Confirmations of who is on the RSVP list will be posted on Hanson.net much closer to the event.

If you have any questions that were not covered here – please leave a comment and I will do my best to answer! I have visited Tulsa for Members Only Events every year since 2009 so I guess I am a bit of a “veteran”

Book Review: Fingerprint Drawing

fingerprintsFingerprint Drawing is a book for kids all about finger printing. It teaches them the names of each of their fingers and different techniques to use when painting.  There are also examples of things you can make with the tips of your fingers and how many steps it takes to make it into something more like a flower or a bee! There’s also a bunch of funny faces you can turn your finger prints into!  As the book goes on, the finger painting ideas get more and more complicated – using 2 fingers,  making borders, combining the different shapes you can get by using different fingers, etc.  Definitely a lot of fun ideas to keep your kids busy the next time they are stuck inside!

I received a free e-copy of this book in order to write this review, I was not otherwise compensated.
