Stephen Kellogg Band at Stage One

Lately I’ve been trying to avoid concerts during the week because it messes with my being able to sleep a decent amount before work. (I know, I’m so not a rock star anymore)  However, there are some exceptions and Wednesday night that exception was Stephen Kellogg.  He is touring as the “Stephen Kellogg Band” as a part of the promotion for his upcoming album South, West, North, East.  Brooks Hubbard opened the show, Miranda Mulholland was up next with stand up bass player Zachariah Hickman.  The latter two also were part of Stephen’s band.

Brooks did a set of 3 songs. He is from New Hampshire but relocated to Nashville.  He had posted a cover of one of Stephen’s songs and Stephen wanted to know who this guy was that sang his songs with better pitch than him.

Miranda had teased during her set that Stephen plays a lot of songs about hope and family songs and that there was legislation passed that you can’t have a set full of just that so she was going to sing all the autobiographical songs about relationships that didn’t work out.

The Stephen Kellogg Band consisted of “South” – Zachariah, “North” – Miranda, “East” – Boots Factor (former SK6er) and “West”- Sam Getz (former SK6er).

The set started with Curtain Call, with everyone up around one mic.  I found that Zachariah and Miranda were a welcome addition to the band – who knew that what was missing was a fiddle and a stand up bass?

After Thankgiving, the band left the stage.  Stephen said “The band said they’d learn Thankgiving, but then they needed a break!”  Since they were home, Stephen was going to try something that had not been planned and he called backstage to see if his kids were still there. “A couple” was yelled back.  “A couple? I hope a couple didn’t leave” and then shortly after all 4 of his girls joined him on stage and he asked them to sit on the stage and he was going to tell them how much they were loved.  He started crying and had to turn around and compose himself for a minute and then did a medley of “Four Kids”, “Sweet Sophia”, “Oh Adeline”, “Noelle, Noelle” and “Greta Girl”, which are some of the songs he had written for his daughters.  Greta ended up having to leave the stage before her song came up because she was not too thrilled to be out there.  Stephen was also using a guitar strap that had S A N G on it – of course after this medley I realized the letters stood for his daughter’s first initials.

The band played from about 10 minutes to 9 until shortly after 10. It was a great set with a mixture of songs off the new album (that I have not yet listened to even though I got it early for backing the project through pledgemusic) and some older favorites as well.

Product Review: Crabby Gear Minimalist Wallet

Looking to travel light – with just some credit cards, cash and your ID but aren’t sure where to find a wallet that will hold it all and isn’t bulky?  Check out the Crabby Gear Minimalist wallet.  You can even attach it to your keys or attach a key to it so everything you need is all in one convenient, small spot!

The Crabby wallet is made of 100% elastic and can hold up to 10 cards.  The colored strap has a rubber grip on the underside which helps hold everything securely in place so you don’t have to worry about all your cards slipping out. Found very high on the list by MyBestWallets, this is one that is sure to last a long time. The durable stitching and materials leave nothing to worry about.

The wallet looks cool too, with a crab on it and a colored strap that you can choose. I of course chose Orange.  I usually have my purse full of stuff so that it is heavy.  If I want to go for a walk and make sure I have only what I need, I can easily transfer everything to the Crabby wallet and not have it weighing me down!  I especially like the non slip strap to help give me confidence that the contents are safe inside the wallet.  And you can’t go wrong with orange and crabs – just a few of my favorite things!

Product Review: The Ultimate Nail Clipper

Ever since I had my previous nail clipper confiscated by TSA due to a “blade” attachment I have been looking for a replacement clipper to keep with me in my purse.  I have found the winner in The Ultimate Nail Clipper.  It is a professional long handled nail clipper with a built in nail file and NO attachments to worry about.  The clipper is guaranteed to not tear your toe nails or your finger nails, it is rust proof and comes with a lifetime guarantee.

I also liked that these clippers work with little effort, I am not pushing down with all my strength to try and get the nail to cut. It is also super quiet, it was so easy to use and so quiet the first time that I tried it out I wasn’t even sure it did anything it seemed so easy! But it did!

If you’re looking for a great gift for someone or a great stocking stuffer – everyone needs to cut their nails so why not get them something that will last and is quick and easy to use?

I received a free clipper in exchange for this honest review. I was not otherwise compensated.

histyoryHistory & Me is a workbook of historic figures and family research.  In addition to teaching children in the 2nd grade age range about historic figures, there are also a lot of fun activities throughout the book.  It starts out with teaching about biographies and has an area for the child to answer questions about themselves that would be the start of their own biography! The book teaches about women in history, all while teaching your child reading comprehension skills as each short biography is followed up with a few questions about what they just read. The American Heroes section has a lot of fun word scrambles to help answer the questions following each of the biographies. Presidential Potpurri has a bunch of fun activities throughout while teaching about some of the more famous presidents.  After you trace your roots in the final chapter of the book, you will have everything that you need in order to write your autobiography!

Book Review: Wrong Number, Right Guy

wrongnumberWrong Number, Right Guy is about May Wexler. The book begins and she is talking to her sister and her sister is getting a new phone. So when she gets a mystery text telling her to come to a dive bar, she thinks that her sister and her kids are in trouble – even though she isn’t really sure why her sister would have the kids at the bar.  She heads down there anyway – with her dog Felix – and ends up in the middle of a shootout.  A big dude with a big beard helps her out and makes sure that she gets home safe, but she ends up at his house instead when she thinks she is being followed.  The big dude is Ozzie, who runs the Bourbon Street Boys, a private security firm.  May is a photographer and he offers her a job doing surveillance work for the company.

Now that Ozzie no longer has his big beard, May is a bit attracted to him, but can she act on it? He is her boss!  But maybe the wrong number brought her the right guy…  But if they act on their feelings, will they let down their guard and make it so May is no longer safe?

I really liked this book. It had some action, some mystery and some romance, you can’t really ask for more. It was well written, and kept me wanting to keep reading to see not only what may happen between May and Ozzie but if the bad guys really were after May and if Ozzie and his BSB crew could keep her safe.

About the Book

When a mysterious text message summons May Wexler to a biker bar in downtown New Orleans, she knows something is very wrong. Her sister has sent out an SOS, but when May gets there, she’s nowhere to be found and May is the one in trouble—she’s wearing pink espadrilles, she’s got a Chihuahua in her purse, and she’s in the middle of a shootout.

After tall, muscular Ozzie comes to her rescue, May has no choice but to follow him to safety. At the headquarters of his private security firm, the Bourbon Street Boys, she finds a refuge for the night—and the offer of a job. But it’s not long before a gun-toting stalker isn’t the only complication in May’s life: the more time she spends with Ozzie, the less she can deny that they’ve got some serious chemistry. A wrong number got her into this mess…Will it also get her the right guy?

Book Review: Adventures in Writing

adventuresAdventures in Writing is a workbook of imagination and writing geared for 1st graders aged 6-7. The book is very interactive with flash cards, activities and worksheets for your child to try to help learn the points that are being taught in the book.  I kind of wish I was 6, because it looks like it is a lot of fun! At the end of each chapter is a “Great job!” certificate to show that you have mastered the chapter and are a superstar! You can also color it in, too. Each chapter builds on the lessons taught in the previous chapters as well to help really bring the message home.  All of the cut out activities and coloring activities look like they would be a lot of fun – while being very educational as well!

If you are a teacher or have a kid who is 6-7 years old in your life, you’ll want to check out this book to help teach them the rules of writing!

Book Review: Shout It Out Loud

shoutitout

Shout It Out Loud is the story of Kiss’s Destroyer.  I liked that the table of contents were set up like a cassette tape would be.  Kiss would do anything to make it and to stay there, and it looks like they definitely had the right plan – since they are still around now.  The book talks a bit about the history of the band and also goes into depth on Destroyer and breaks down the songs and the lyrics.  Definitely a really cool book, a biography and a bit more! I always enjoy reading about other albums and lyrics!

About the Book

How does an underground oddity become a cultural phenomenon?

For over 40 years, the rock band Kiss has galvanized the entertainment world with an unparalleled blitz of bravado, theatricality, and shameless merchandising, garnering generations of loyally rabid fans. But if not for a few crucial months in late 1975 and early 1976, Kiss may have ended up nothing more than a footnote.

Shout It Out Loud is a serious examination of the circumstance and serendipity that fused the creation of the band’s seminal work, Destroyer – including the band’s arduous ascent to the unexpected smash hit, Alive!, the ensuing lawsuits between its management and its label, the pursuit of the hot, young producer, a grueling musical “boot camp,” the wildly creative studio abandon, the origins behind an iconic cover, the era’s most outlandish tour, and the unlikely string of hit singles.

Extensive research from the period and insights into each song are enhanced by hundreds of archived materials and dozens of interviews surrounding the mid-’70s-era Kiss and its zeitgeist. New interviews with major principals in the making of an outrageously imaginative rock classic animate this engaging tale.

Recap:
This was a late show up at the casino. It was also general admission seating, even though I found out about the show and my cousin got the tickets before the show was actually announced – so if they were based on first come first serve we’d have been much closer than we ended up.  The ushers decided where you would sit and we even tried using the old it’s my cousins birthday gag…

David Cook at Infinity Hall

Friday night David Cook played a sold out show at Infinity Hall in Norfolk, CT.  I had purchased a M&G package which allowed me to meet David before the show, get something signed, get a photo with him as well as get a copy of his new CD, Digital Vein.  Since David is a big Royals fan and I’m a big Mets fan, we talked about the World Series and he said he was trying to keep his mouth shut for the next couple of shows (Saturday night was NYC) but that he was glad he could go back to liking the Mets now because he did like them. (Just not as much as the Royals) He also said if the Mets could keep their pitching for a while they’ll be really good… and get some bullpen help.  I agreed.

After the M&G we could either stay upstairs at our seats or head back downstairs. I opted to stay in my 2nd row seat and had forgotton how tight the seats were.  My knees were practically touching the row in front of me! Andrew Ripp was the opener and didn’t come out until sometime after 8.  He has a Hanson connection and I was going to talk to him about it after the show either way – but then he decided to tell a story about David.  Which started out with “I flew to Tulsa, OK… to write songs with Hanson” I, of course, cheered, but then he had to say “You know. Hanson, MMMBop?” and proceeded to butcher the chorus. The story continued that on his flight back home to LA, some guy came and sat in the middle seat next to him with a sandwich (and he didn’t like people who brought on food that smelled because he was always hungry) and that guy was David Cook.  They talked and found out they were both musicians and David told Andrew he was heading out to LA to cut a record.  2 weeks later, Andrew turns on American Idol and there is David… and he figured out that he lied to him the whole flight to LA and Andrew believed everything he said.  But he was going out there to audition for Idol and couldn’t say anything!  Andrew’s set was really good and after the show I bought all of his CDs and talked to him about Hanson.  He said writing with them was “awesome” and that he really does like them and they are really great guys.  Then he asked if I had a Hanson bumper sticker and I said I did it said “I <3 Hanson” and my car was parked right outside. He laughed and ended up writing “I <3 Hanson too!!!!” on my autograph. ha.

David was on around 9pm.  His set was a lot shorter than I was expecting it to be, but was still great.  He talked about how his new album was out and that some of the songs would be new if you didn’t yet have the CD.  (I failed and had intended to listen to it a few times before going to the show to brush up on my lyrics and never did!) Before the 4th song he said it would be new if you weren’t familiar with the CD – but then the drums kicked in and David kind of made a face and then they went into the song “Heroes” which was not a new song.  I just kind of shrugged it off until after the song David went on about his professional band and how his professional drummer started playing the wrong song and the rest of his professional band followed right along.

After that he asked what guys were there because their significant others made them come along.  He decided it was time to play something for the guys and did Led Zeppelin’s Rock and Roll and Whole Lotta Love. (Sorry Dave, ZHan does it better)  After he finished the next song, Declaration, he said he had to make a note to not do that one back to back with Zeppelin.

The backdrop at Infinity Hall has a bunch of lights on it that they can make twinkle and blink along to the music and David commented that if anyone had been to Disney it reminded him of the Tower of Terror.  He also spotted a sign in the audience a little girl had that said “WE LOVE DAVID COOK” 4x on it.  He asked if he could have it to put it up on stage with him for the show, and then laughed and said it “got sinister” when he realized she put her phone number on it!  He said he was still going to put it on stage but if anyone prank called Hannah.. “I swear to god…”  At the end of the show he called her back up front and autographed the sign and gave it back to her.

During the encore, he talked a bit about how everyone’s faces are always covered by a giant cell phone during his sets and he wanted us to just have a moment. He asked for everyone to put their phones and cameras in their pockets or purses so we could have a moment and how he has gone to a lot of concerts and doesn’t have any pictures and he’s ok with that. Because he has the memories of the moments.  (Sorry David, I like the memories AND the scrapbook pages – but had no problem with his request for putting everything down for just one song)
