Recap:

This show must not have been all that memorable to me because even after looking at the photos I still cant remember any sort of highlight to tell you about.  We had soundcheck passes which is why in the first photo he is wearing a different shirt. Um yeah so…

Where Are They Now:

I told you just last week!

Idina Menzel 7/11/15 at Mohegan Sun

Saturday night Idina Menzel brought her world tour to the Mohegan Sun Arena.  Upon entering the venue I was told that per request of the artist, no photography would be allowed. I was also told the same when I got to my seat so I respected that and did not take any photos during the show. I did snap a picture of the stage setup before the show though:

There was no opener and the show was set to start at 8pm but started closer to 8:20 or 8:30.  Idina sang a mixture of songs from her Broadway shows like Wicked, Rent and If/Then, as well as some tracks from her albums and some songs from some of her favorite female singers.  I had heard that her show may not be appropriate for children – and she did seem to censor herself a bit and at times told parents to cover their kids ears (when she was talking about how the gay men always compliment her ass and she loves them for it!)

She had a couple other covers mixed in as well – before she did Radiohead’s Creep she talked about how she has a lot of songs about overcoming but some days she doesn’t want to get out of bed and she doesn’t want to sing Let It Go.  She was kneeling on the stage and ended up laying down on it to sing Creep.

Take Me Or Leave me she had a man help her down off the stage and went into the crowd to have a sing a long. Everyone she chose (3 girls and a guy) had wonderful voices. She even gave a guy a hug and stepped in something that had spilled (she was barefoot) and wiped it on a chair like the classy long island girl she is. 😉 (her words!)  I saw on instagram someone on the floor said that she actually spilled the drink herself when she went to hug him and didn’t realize it.

Let It Go she had us all sing along over and over and over again – because our “Cold never bothered me anyway” line wasn’t good enough for her. She had some kids come up to sing too – she said they had to be under 7 to sing with her!  I felt kind of funny singing about the cold not bothering me because I never remember that the arena keeps the AC cranking and I was sitting there shivering!

Then she did some sort of mashup that only she could pull off and mixed Red Hot Chili Peppers “Give It Away” in with Let It Go to end her set.

She came out for a 2 song encore and at one point told us we were an amazing audience (she seemed very impressed with the arena being so big and so many people there) and said we were a little obnoxious too – which was a plus to her!

Idina sang for roughly an hour and a half. It was a fun show, I loved how interactive she was with the audience and how she ran through the crowd and just said what she wanted to say. She has an amazing voice and I am glad that I got to see her on her own. (I had previously seen her in Wicked, 10+ years ago!) If you’re on the fence about going – definitely go check her out!

I didn’t keep track of the setlist but I found this online and I am pretty sure it is accurate:

Product Review: ALL NATURAL Mosquito Repellent Bracelets

Summer is here and that means so are bugs. I hate bugs and nothing makes me crazier than mosquito bites. They seem to sneak up on you and then don’t stop itching! This summer I decided to try and combat mosquitoes and hopefully get no bites by using the Eco Defense All Natural Mosquito Repellent Bracelets.

The bracelets contain citronella, eucalyptus, lavender and mint oils. The naturally infused oils work fast to keep you bite free. You won’t need to use sprays or harmful DEET or chemicals on yourself in order to prevent bites. These are safe for children, adults and pets!

The bracelets come in a resealable container. They have several slots on the bracelet to attach it to your wrist so that means one size fits almost everyone! I found that I needed a hole in between two that were already existing to wear it comfortably, but it was not loose enough that it would fall off on the setting I had it on.  The clasp to keep it on my wrist also help up well and it was almost difficult to get it off. (Might have been because I was working with just one hand though!)

This is also something that I will be taking on vacation to Jamaica with me – the mosquitoes there ate us alive the past 2 times we were there – and dealing with bug spray and TSA and all that was a drag. (They took my OFF! from me on the way home year 1 and year 2 they took it from my roomie) These are a great liquid free alternative!

Features and Benefits:

✔︎ NO MORE BITES – Stop getting attacked by mosquitoes every time you step foot outdoors. Eco Defense All Natural mosquito repellent bracelets are 100% guaranteed to help repel mosquitoes off.
✔︎ ALL NATURAL – Eco Defense Mosquito Repellent Bracelet is infused with ALL NATURAL mosquito repellent oils; Citronella, Eucalyptus, Lavender, and Mint Oils provide long lasting protection without the dangers or typical mosquito repellents.
✔︎ NO CHEMICALS OR SPRAYS – No DEET, No SPRAY, No Chemicals. Like All Eco Defense products our mosquito repellent bracelets are completely natural and safe. Safe for kids, adults, everyone in the family.
✔︎ ENJOY THE OUTDOORS – Enjoy the outdoors again! Each pack contains 5 easily adjustable bracelets providing over 150 hours of protection!
When the package first arrived I noticed it had a very strong scent.

Music Monday: Owl City Unbelievable

owlcity

Although Owl City’s album came out just a few days ago (July 10) today I am just focusing on the single “Unbelievable”.  I’m not really a fan of owl city’s style with the distortion of singing so I’m not sure I’ll bother to review the whole album, but since this track features Hanson I had to mention it.  Though only Isaac gets a songwriting credit on the song, all 3 Hanson’s have a couple lines in the song.

The whistling in the song reminds me a lot of Owl City’s song “Good Time” which he did with Carly Rae Jepsen (who opened for Hanson on their Canadian tour a while back… 6 degrees of Hanson!) I love all the 90s references since I am most definitely a 90s kid.  I think the song is cute.  They even made an animated video for the song – I love the sticker the VHS has at the end! 😉

Book Review: Ringo With a Little Help

ringoRingo: With a Little Help is by Michael Starr (no relation).  Michael tried to get Ringo’s cooperation in writing this book and made all his requests as he should have, but then found out that Ringo would not be helping when Ringo posted on his official website saying that he was not going to be involved and that the book would be unauthorized.  Despite this, this is one of the most thorough biographies I have read.  I can only imagine how much work went into sorting all sorts of content without any help from Ringo by the author in order to piece everything together!  I also liked that the breaks in the book are done with a drumstick instead of the usual dot or star. Nice touch!

As I mentioned, this book has a lot of information on Ringo and how he almost didn’t take the job with the Beatles – but they ended up offering him more money than the other band so he went with it. Crazy how life works out that way, isn’t it?

If you are a Beatles fan or just looking to find out more about the best drummer in Liverpool – here’s your book.

I received a free e-copy of this book in order to write this review.

About the Book

Ringo: With a Little Help is the first in-depth biography of Beatles drummer Ringo Starr, who kept the beat for an entire generation and who remains a rock icon over fifty years since the Beatles took the world by storm.

Born in 1940 as Richard Starkey in the Dingle, one of Liverpool’s most gritty, rough-and-tumble neighborhoods, he rose from a hardscrabble childhood – marked by serious illnesses, long hospital stays, and little schooling – to emerge, against all odds, as a locally renowned drummer. Taking the stage name Ringo Starr, his big break with the Beatles rocketed him to the pinnacle of worldwide acclaim in a remarkably short time. He was the last member of the Beatles to join the group but also the most vulnerable, and his post-Beatles career was marked by chart-topping successes, a jet-setting life of excess and alcohol abuse, and, ultimately, his rebirth as one of rock’s revered elder statesman.

Ringo: With a Little Help traces the entire arc of Ringo’s remarkable life and career, from his sickly childhood to his life as the world’s most famous drummer to his triumphs, addictions, and emotional battles following the breakup of the Beatles as he comes to terms with his legacy.

Book Review: Risk It

riskitI had previously read one of the other books in this series, Want It. I enjoyed it so when I was asked to read Risk It, I agreed. I found the book got off to a slow start (and checked Good Reads and a lot of the reviews were low stars) but I decided to stick with it because I don’t like to not finish books unless they are quite awful. I am glad I stuck this one out because at about 1/4-1/2 way through things picked up a bit and I got more into it.

I wasn’t as into Rand and Dani’s relationship as I could have been, but I did like the sub plots a lot more. Rand and Dani couldn’t be more different – Rand is rich and Dani is a thief! But somehow Rand convinces Dani that she should spend a night with him instead of a night in jail and it evolves into a game of 30 days with him. There seems to be an attraction but Dani is fighting it – just out to get the money to help her brother – who won’t tell her why he needs it.

A nice summer read – just make sure you stick with it if you think it’s dragging a bit in the beginning!

I received a free e-copy of this book in order to write this review, I was not otherwise compensated.

About the Book

Jennifer Chance’s Rule Breakers series turns up the heat as a wealthy playboy and a beautiful con artist engage in a high-stakes game of seduction.

As dominating in business as he is in bed, Rand Sterling Winston IV always gets what he wants. And even before he realizes that she’s scammed him into paying triple the cost for her friend’s painting, he wants Dani Michaels. To catch her alone, Rand demands that she personally deliver his purchase. The attraction between them is immediate and electric, and he knows she feels it, too. So when the part-time petty thief rebuffs his advances, he gives her a choice: a night in jail or an evening with him.

Despite her checkered past, Dani has never met someone like Rand: brooding, intense, and oh so tempting. Only a man with a broken soul could make control feel this dangerous. Still, when Rand proposes a no-strings, no-holds-barred affair, Dani’s more than a little intrigued. It’ll be the trickiest con she’s ever run and a chance to indulge her steamiest fantasies—nothing more. But as their encounters grow increasingly intimate, Dani uncovers a vulnerable side to Rand’s steely exterior and opens her heart to the ultimate risk.

Book Review: A Year Unplugged

A year unplugged is about a family of 3 who take a year off from all  technology – with some rules. They won’t have a TV in their house – but if they’re somewhere with a TV they can watch it – and apparently they can decide to spend the night in a hotel room if they want to watch the American Idol finale. (I get that it’s awful to miss American Idol but spending the night in the hotel JUST for the TV seemed like cheating to me!).  They no longer use smart phones and instead have a cellphone for emergencies only. No digital cameras – film only. No video games – unless you’re at a friends house. No iTunes or iPods – only the radio or CDs – or as they ended up using, records and a record player.  No computer means no email, internet, ebay, online banking, social networking (are you cringing yet?) no map sites, no wordprocessing (Mom was using a typewriter for a bit!).   Technology can only be used for work purposes since they still need to make a living – but with no internet at home they’d have to check work email at work or at the library.

I know I would not last a DAY with these rules – let alone a YEAR. (I could mayyybe survive a week – if I was on vacation somewhere and had enough distracting me and limited wifi).  They implemented their rules over a two week period so each day something else left until they were technology free.

The book chronicles their year – a lot of their friends and acquaintances just don’t seem to understand what they are doing and it seems like they are missing out on a lot.  The husband has been using his iPhone as an address book for 5 months before he gets “caught” and told that is against the rules and he needs to use a planner.  At 6 months the husband explodes over no internet at home so he can not get work done – causing them to revise the rules.  The 3rd member of the family is their 6 year old who seems to be the most spoiled brat.  Taking away technology? Let’s buy her all of the toys! (And a dress. And maybe a guinea pig. And whatever else she sees that she wants.)

I must commend them for sticking it out for the whole year, but also think they are nuts for even attempting it!

About the Book

In A Year Unplugged, Sharael Kolberg chronicles her family’s brave attempt to wean themselves from technology in an effort to reclaim quality family time. The Kolbergs decided to turn off their television, unplug their iPods, iPhones, laptops and digital cameras, and disconnect from e-mail, cell phones and the Internet. Not an easy task.

Sharael’s true-life tale explores how dependent we are on technology and the impact it has on interpersonal relationships and society. Through thought-provoking, humorous and heart-wrenching narrative, Sharael hopes to compel readers to open dialogue about the conscious use of technology.

Cost: Free

Setlist:

Pink & Black
Letter Song
When It Comes

How Love Should Be

Recap:

This show was put on by a radio station so it was free! It was also the first (and I think only) time I actually got a photo with Tyler. (Which is funny because he sat next to me to sign after a concert once and I never bothered to ask him for a photo!)  Tyler seemed to be exhausted, he had been doing a lot of traveling. I also remember feeling like I was way too old to be there based on the rest of the crowd! (I still feel that way at Tyler shows now that I think about it…)

Where Are They Now:

Still making music and also appears on Extant which is coming back soon if it isn’t back already!

Blues Traveler at Red Rocks July 4, 2015

When I heard that Blues Traveler was playing at Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado and Hanson was opening – I knew I somehow had to make it to the show since seeing a show at Red Rocks is on my bucket list and seeing Hanson there would make it that much more awesome. I did my research and found out that ADA was 1st row or 70th row (last row) so I decided it would be “first row or bust”.

Things started falling into place and I found someone to meet up with and share a hotel and car rental with.  Friday morning I flew out to Denver, we did some sightseeing around downtown and got way too many VooDoo Doughnuts.

Saturday we stopped to find a Buffalo Herd and then headed to Red Rocks to check out the museum and see the view from the top of the venue. Amazing.

With rain on the way, we made a trip to Walmart to get some ponchos to make sure we’d be ok to sit in our seats the whole show and not miss anything due to running for cover!

Then it was time to get our shuttle ride to the front row so we could enjoy the show! Once we got there we were waiting around for a while and heard Hanson soundchecking I’ve Got Soul and Where’s the Love. When they (finally) let us inside, Zac was coming from the stage so I got to say hello to him!

Our seats were kind of far away so we asked if we could move closer for Hanson and obviously move when whoever seats we were in showed up. We were told that was fine – BUT if security sent us back to our seats then to listen to them because they were in charge.  Fortunately the seats we picked worked out for us for the whole show.

Hanson was up first and they played about 50 minutes, roughly 11 songs.  We figured the set would be pretty vanilla – greatest hits – but got a treat when they had John Popper come out to perform In The City with them on harmonica.  John was featured on a couple of tracks on Hanson’s sophomore release – This Time Around.  Fortunately there was no rain for their whole set which made me happy because I didn’t have to hide my camera from the rain.

Next up was Guster and the lead singer joked about having to take the stage after MMMBop. It was raining throughout their set so I didn’t take too many photos and spent pretty much the rest of the night in and out of my poncho (towards the end it was more for keeping warm than keeping dry). The lead singer’s shirt ripped and he realized it and was wondering if his nipple had been showing. Next thing you know he’s showing it and it’s up on the giant screen next to the stage!

Then it was time for Blues Traveler. I was hoping that JC from NSYNC would be a “special guest” and we figured out that he was already in town the night before filming a music video with Blues Traveler and 3Oh!3 so most of their set I was waiting for those songs to hit the setlist – but figured they’d be near the end if they were making a video – it must be a single.  Aside from the new songs – since I have their new album – the only songs that I knew were The Hook and Run Around.  There was a lot more jamming than singing.  Rome Ramirez was one of the special guests and did 3 songs with the band – including Sublime’s “What I Got” since Rome tours w/ Sublime a lot.  Hanson came out and did Top of the World with the band – complete with lyrics taped to the stage for Taylor.  And then… John called 3Oh!3 to the stage – and who followed them? JC Chasez!!! He ended up doing Hurricane and Blow Up The Moon with Blues Traveler and 3Oh!3 – and where did he stand? Right in front of the new seats we had picked out and no one had kicked us out of.

Then it was time for the encore. Blues Traveler did one song by themselves and then called out the special guests and some of the guys from Guster out.  JC started out with “The Joker” and they did a few other songs in a medley and everyone was just having a great time on stage. I was doing ok videoing because JC was near Zac Hanson – but once they split up it was hard to decide who to record so I tried to get a little bit of everyone in there.  My video has been passed around a lot so I guess I did an ok job 😉  But the TRUE bucketlist moment came at the end of the encore – when I hear over the speakers “hey hey – bye bye bye” and JC started singing Bye Bye Bye. And I started crying.  There is no concert I want more than an NSYNC reunion – and for now 1/5 of NSYNC singing an NSYNC song live in front of me while I’m in the front row is probably as close as I’m going to get for a while anyway. And I’m ok with that. But I would also like JC to come out of hiding and tour! Please?

The whole way back to the car I just kept saying how I couldn’t believe that just happened and had to compose myself a bit before I could drive back to our hotel! I still have been watching my videos just amazed that not only it happened – but I was there.

It was truly a bucket list trip and it will be very hard to top!!
