Book Review: Abandoned NYC

abandonedThere is something about abandoned buildings that draws me to them. I love to look at photographs of them.  I’m not sure why – maybe because there’s so much history or they are just so interesting to look at as they are breaking down, but when I saw a book called Abandoned NYC I knew it was something I had to check out.  The book is broken down by Hospitals & Institutions, Railraods & Waterfronts, Military Installations, Industrial Sites and Forgotten Places.

The photos in this book are amazing. Some are hauntingly beautiful, some are creepy and others are gross, but I find myself drawn to them all and the stories that they tell and the history they hold within.

This is a fascinating read for anyone as interested in abandoned places as I am.

About the Book

Every city has its ghosts. From Manhattan and Brooklyn’s trendiest neighborhoods to the far-flung edges of the outer boroughs, Ellis captures the lost and lonely corners of the United States’ most populous city. Step inside the New York you never knew, with 200 eerie images of urban decay, through crumbling institutions, defunct military posts, abandoned factories, railroads, schools, and waterways. Uncover the forgotten history behind New York’s most incredible abandoned spaces, and witness its seldom seen and rapidly disappearing landscape. Explore the ruins of the Harlem Renaissance, sift through the artifacts of massive squatter colonies, and find out how the past is literally washing up on the shores of a Brooklyn beach called Dead Horse Bay. This book is for anyone who’s ever wondered what’s behind the “No Trespassing” sign.

Book Review: Llewellyn’s Complete Dictionary of Dreams

dreamsIf you’re like me, you sometimes have some really off the wall dreams – like a porcupine driving your car and crashing it in to the curb – and then you want to know what that means. That is why I decided to check out Llewellyn’s Complete Dictionary of Dreams. Of course, I searched first for porcupine only to find out that it was not included in this book. I guess that dream will continue to remain a mystery.

But while a porcupine might not be featured in this book, there are over 1,000 Dream Symbols and their meanings included.  Sorted alphabetically so you can easily flip through and find what you are looking for – the dictionary will let you know what each element of your dream means. For instance – a car crash – which I guess is what my porcupine did – can mean that you are “feeling like the circumstances in your life have stopped you from moving forward, maybe very abruptly”

Unfortunately I can’t remember any of my other crazy dreams from recently to look up – but I will be keeping this dictionary handy to use in the future as I think your dreams can tell you a lot about what is going on in your subconscious – and I like to try and be aware of that/

Book Review: I Don’t Have a Happy Place

happyplaceI Don’t Have a Happy Place is about Kim Korson.  The book is a series of stories about her life and how she can’t be happy.  The first chapter is all about how she watched her babysitter die when they were on vacation and she drowned.  In one of the letters she wrote to the teenage her she writes that she “can’t see the bright side of anything.”  Her life doesn’t seem to be all that bad – she has a boyfriend, who becomes her husband, they have kids, they go to Disney World… but Kim just has a aura of negativity around her which makes for some interesting and comedic stories.

This was a fun read. I received a free e-copy of this book in order to write this review, I was not otherwise compensated.

About the Book

When a trip to the therapist ends with the question “Can’t Kim be happy?” Kim Korson responds the way any normal person would—she makes fun of it. Because really, does everyone have to be happy?

Aside from her father wearing makeup and her mother not feeling well (a lot), Kim Korson’s 1970s suburban upbringing was typical. Sometimes she wished her brother were an arsonist just so she’d have a valid excuse to be unhappy. And when life moves along pretty decently–she breaks into show business, gets engaged in the secluded jungles of Mexico, and moves her family from Brooklyn to dreamy rural Vermont—the real despondency sets in. It’s a skill to find something wrong in just about every situation, but Kim has an exquisite talent for negativity. It is only after half a lifetime of finding kernels of unhappiness where others find joy that she begins to wonder if she is even capable of experiencing happiness.

In I Don’t Have a Happy Place, Kim Korson untangles what it means to be a true malcontent. Rife with evocative and nostalgic observations, unapologetic realism, and razor-sharp wit, I Don’t Have a Happy Place is told in humorous, autobiographical stories. This fresh-yet-dark voice is sure to make you laugh, nod your head in recognition, and ultimately understand what it truly means to be unhappy. Always.

Recap: It was FREEZING at this show. I had on my huge winter coat. I also remember we were sitting in line near the bus and my friend took a ride to Dunkin Donuts to get us some hot chocolate because it was so cold. When she returned, somehow I had been barricade in with the bus instead of out like some sort of caged animal.  I also met up with a TON of online friends at this show! I didn’t bring my camera so I don’t have any photos but someone got this shot of (most?) of us – I’m on the left – also pictured Beckie, Nicole, Erin, Leah, Mary, Becky, Doreen, Kristal, Alex, Erika, Michelle and Jess.

Zubel Dimples

Lil Dimples are crochet dolls made by Zubel.  They are made by hand and 100% cotton. They are about 4″ tall and great to collect, play with, attach to your backpack, use as a gift tag or anything else your imagination desires! Right now they are offering 10 designs and will be offering another 10 for the holidays.  They are called dimples because they look like the dimples on a golf ball!

I received the mermaid to review.  She has pink hair with a pony tail, a flower on her top and a nice green tail.  She is super cute! She also has a hook on the back of her neck so that I can hang her somewhere if I’d like – or attach her to my purse or backpack as a travel buddy!

The current 10 designs in the line are a Crab, Dog, Bella Ballerina, Bunny, Gnome, Mermaid, Unicorn, T-Rex, Stegosaurus and Triceratops. All of them are super adorable and I am glad that they didn’t ask me which one I’d like to review because I’d have never been able to choose they are all so cute! They retail for $10 each.

Zubels has a catalog of other items including crochet baby rattles, plush dolls and matching hats, crochet and knit dolls, sweaters and all are super adorable and would make great gifts for yourself or that adorable baby in your life.

Concert Review: Lee DeWyze at Fairfield Theater

Wednesday night, Lee DeWyze returned to the Fairfield Theater for a show. Opening was My Silent Bravery and Anna Rose.

My Silent Bravery was up first and did a set of 6 songs – POV, To Give with a mash up of Magic!’s Rude, On My Side with a mash up of Wonder wall, Not Necessarily So, a cover of Nelly’s Ride With Me, and ended their set with Amazing. (Gotta love openers who mention all their song names!)

Next up was Anna Rose – who has one of the most amazing voices that I’ve heard in a while. I was incredibly impressed with her set. I guess she tours with Tony Lucca a lot – but Tony always skips CT so I’d never had the chance to see her before.

Then it was time to get Idol spoilers from the Lady sitting behind me. Her husband was texting her as everyone made it through and she felt the need to announce them all. Thanks lady, I wasn’t DVRing to watch when I got home or anything… (I was trying to hard to avoid social media during the show too!)

When Lee took the stage someone yelled out that he was looking fancy and he teased that he could park your car.  Sing you a song and park your car.  He also mentioned that he was drinking on stage and the problem with drinking on stage is that everyone thinks that you’re drunk.  He told us that it was his first drink of the night so no, he wasn’t drunk, and also that if you are drinking on stage if you so much as trip – then everyone thinks you’re drunk.  Later in the set he went to switch guitars and tripped a little and had to laugh.  (The majority of my notes from this show are about him drinking so now I’m going to make it seem like he’s a drunk – he’s not!)  During his Wake Me Up / Stay With Me mashup he got so into it and his drink was near the edge of the stool he had on stage.  And it fell right off the stool. He didn’t even realize it and a few people let him know and he imitated the drink saying it was having so much fun it was going to jump… and then it did.  He went on to talk about one of his new songs that he was going to sing for us called Stone.  Someone asked what it was about and he said “a rock” and went on to explain the song.  He mentioned it had a river in it and everyone started cheering – because venue staff brought him out a new drink.  He didn’t know what was going on and thought we all just really liked rivers.  Then he was talking to the drink saying “Don’t do what your brother did, don’t you do it!” and then said that he was an idiot.

I hadn’t seen Lee live since just after he won Idol so I wasn’t really familiar with too much of his stuff.  I thought he had a really solid set and I loved the covers he threw in – Cecelia, Hallelujah (which he mentioned wasn’t on the setlist – but he makes a list basically telling himself what to do and he decided that he was going to change up what he told himself to do and play it) and the Wake Me Up / Stay With Me mashup – that ended up looping back into Don’t Be Afraid which was the song he had sung before these two which was cool.  And I loved the passion in his voice and how performing some of the songs seemed to just consume him.  It’s a shame that he was playing to a room of only 100 or so people!

Product Review: UTU Cable Organizer

I have a huge problem with not enough USB ports on my computer and I am constantly having to switch them out depending on what I am using at the time. And inevitably, every time I unplug something the cord would fall to the ground. Not anymore! Now that I have the Cable Organizer on my desk, it holds all of the cords for the USB items that are plugged in and those that aren’t. No more needing to track down where they fell on the floor – they are all within my reach on my desk!

Product Review: #1 Pizza Cutter

We eat a lot of pizza in my house and have tried many various pizza cutters over the years.  Most recently we tried out the SH&SH #1 Pizza Cutter.  It is 100% Stainless Steel and sharp for cutting pizza, pie, crust and pastry dough.  It is easy to clean and dishwasher safe – no rust!  The hard rubber handle offers improved control with a comfortable grip, soft grip areas are built into the handle for slip resistance giving excellent grip and balance to help you cut cleanly. It is easy to clean with no effort needed. Wash it with soap and a sponge or toss it in the dishwasher.  It is ergonomically correct, light weight and easy to use when you are pressing down.

We have a split in the house of lefties versus righties and had a split with how much each person liked the cutter.  1 lefty and 1 righty loved it – finding it super easy to use, sharp and allowing for quick clean cuts.  There was no need to want to hold on to the fresh out of the oven pizza stone to get more leverage to get a clean cut on the first try.  The other lefty and righty were not as impressed.  The lefty said it was not made for left handers and the righty said it only worked on the “out” not on the “in” when cutting.  We tried it on pizza and stuffed bread.  Turns out – the two that liked using the cutter are the ones in the family who use it the most – so we’re sticking with their rave reviews!
