Book Review: Rewire Your Anxious Brain

rewireI definitely have an anxious brain. I worry and panic over things that I shouldn’t need to worry about. A lot of times I have to tell myself to calm down because I fear I may make myself sick – worrying about the silliest things. I am always looking for ways to try and help myself deal with this, which is why I chose to check out the book Rewire Your Anxious Brain.  The book recommends that you not try anything alone and work with a professional while working on the ideas presented in the book.

The book contains a lot of information about the brain to help you figure out how and why these things are happening to you.  There are exercises throughout the book to help you figure out what is going on in your head and what your end goal is.

This book left me with a lot of new thoughts about myself and how I think. It was definitely an interesting read, and full of very detailed information about the brain.

I received a free e-copy of this book in order to write this review. I was not otherwise compensated.

About the Book

Do you ever wonder what is happening inside your brain when you feel anxious, panicked, and worried? In Rewire Your Anxious Brain, psychologist Catherine Pittman and author Elizabeth Karle offer a unique, evidence-based solution to overcoming anxiety based in cutting-edge neuroscience and research. In the book, you will learn how the amygdala and cortex (both important parts of the brain) are essential players in the neuropsychology of anxiety. The amygdala acts as a primal response, and oftentimes, when this part of the brain processes fear, you may not even understand why you are afraid. By comparison, the cortex is the center of “worry.” That is, obsessing, ruminating, and dwelling on things that may or may not happen. In the book, Pittman and Karle make it simple by offering specific examples of how to manage fear by tapping into both of these pathways in the brain. As you read, you’ll gain a greater understanding how anxiety is created in the brain, and as a result, you will feel empowered and motivated to overcome it. The brain is a powerful tool, and the more you work to change the way you respond to fear, the more resilient you will become. Using the practical self-assessments and proven-effective techniques in this book, you will learn to literally “rewire” the brain processes that lie at the root of your fears.

Book Review: Graffiti South Africa

graffitiGraffiti South Africa focuses on 3 of the areas in South Africa – Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg and their resident graffiti artists.  The book is filled with photography of beautiful graffiti. I always find graffiti to be fascinating because I know if I had a spray can I couldn’t do anything but maybe some drips from not knowing how to properly use it. The fact that these artists can use spray paint to paint what could be considered masterpieces is amazing. It was also interesting to read about the changes with graffiti over the years and how many artists (or “writers”) are still doing it. There are also interviews with the writers letting you know a little bit about their style and what got them into graffiti. (Graffiti is a weird word I am realizing, now that I’ve typed it so many times!)

Very interesting read and an even more interesting look at some of this art. So amazing!

Influenster Frosty VoxBox

I am so excited that I was chosen to receive the Influenster Frosty Vox Box!  It is full of some great products that I enjoyed trying out.

No7 Protect & Perfect Intense Sachet – This clinically proven serum is even more effective at reducing the appearance of fine lines for younger looking skin in just two weeks.

(Due to an unknown allergy, I no longer am trying any skin products for fear of an allergic reaction.)

NYC Expert Last Lip Color in Sugar Plum – Ready to take your lips to the next level? Try our NEW Expert Last Lip Color in twenty tantalizing shades. Get intense, amplified color and shine that lasts up to six hours! Our moisturizing formula glides on easily for a silky, smooth, velvety finish for all day wear.

I love that this lasts for up to 6 hours – I don’t need to worry about reapplying! I don’t wear lipstick much, but this is definitely a color that I like and may have to reconsider and wear it more often!

Celestial Seasonings Candy Cane Lane Decaf Green Tea – Live life well this holiday season wit Celestial Seasonings and take a stroll down Candy Cane Lane! It’s made with the very finest green tea leaves, peppermint and other botanicals, because at Celestial Seasonings, we know you are what you steep.

This is a great tea for the holiday season. I can’t think of anything that screams FROSTY better than having a nice warm cup of tea that is peppermint flavored.

EcoTools Hair Brush – EcoTools hair brushes are designed with unique features that leave your head and hair happy and healthy. Long or short, straight or curly, EcoTools has the brush to tame any hair style with a variety of five brush head shapes and bristle designs, specially crafted to suit every need.

I was so excited for a new hair brush, I have super thick wavy/curly hair so I am always trying out new brushes as I tend to break brushes quickly. This one I am hoping will stick around for a while because I am really liking it.

Rimmel Gentle Eye Makeup Remover – Gently removes all eye makeup, including long lasting and waterproof makeup, with no oily residue.

Have yet to try this as I am not big on eye makeup – but I like that it doesn’t leave a residue and will remove waterproof make up too – which is my makeup of choice when I do wear it.

Rimmel Scandaleyes Waterproof Kohl Kojal Eyeliner – Gives instant colour impact with its high intensity pigments. The ultra-smooth and creamy formula glides on easily.

Another item I haven’t had a chance to try out yet – I’m not quite sure how to use it so if anyone has any great tutorials out there… I need to step up my make up game.

McCormick Gourmet Thyme – The freshest flavors deserve a fresh new look! McCormick Gourmet’s Thyme imparts a light minty flavor that is distinctively warm and aromatic. McCormick Gourmet Thyme came be used throughout the day in dishes such as breakfast casseroles, hearty soups, stews, stuffing and oven-roasted chicken.

We used this on chicken and pork chops in the past week or so and it definitely made things tastier!

Fruit Vines Bites – Fruit Vines Bites are a new, soft, chewy fruit candy, from the Red Vines family, available in two fruit flavors – strawberry and cherry. Low fat and made with no preservatives, Fruit Vines Bites are available in three sizes: a 2 oz single serve, a 5 oz hanging bang and a 10 oz resealable stand-up bag and can be found at Walmart in the West, Kroger, Walgreens, Target, Safeway and Rite Aid.

I ate this bag in one sitting and when they were gone I wanted more. (I’m hoping I can find some in the store) I absolutely love the cherry flavor and could eat them all day.

I received these products complimentary for testing purposes.

Book Review: Hit

hitThis book is about Sarah, a high school student who has received a full scholarship to Mills College for Girls. Her parents are eager to have her attend, but now she is thinking maybe she should go to UW.  This all comes after her school gets a student teacher from UW – that Sarah has taken a liking to. Sarah believes that the teacher is into her too and since he is her poetry teacher, writes a poem declaring her feelings for him.  As she is heading off to school and to the bus – after refusing a ride from her brother who would get her to school too late – she drops the note and as she heads back into the crosswalk to retrieve it a driver who is not paying attention hits her. She ends up airlifted to the hospital in need of immediate brain surgery.

Driving the car? Mr. Haddings – the student teacher!

The book alternates chapters between Sarah’s point of view in the hospital and Mr. Hadding’s point of view in the hospital waiting room, debating confronting Sarah’s family, etc.  The book is only 3 days worth of their lives, but it seemed like so much had gone on.

SPOILER ALERT

Unfortunately, this is one of those books that I say “didn’t have an ending”.  I mean, it ended, obviously because I’ve finished it and am writing this review – but I didn’t feel like it gave me any closure with the whole situation. I won’t go in to too much detail.

I really enjoyed this book, but would have liked it more if there was an ending I was more satisfied with. It was well written, a quick read, and I felt connected to all of the characters.

About the Book
After receiving a full-ride scholarship to Mills College for Girls, it appears Sarah’s future is all laid out before her … that is until she walks into a poetry class led by Mr. Haddings, a student teacher from the nearby University of Washington. Suddenly, life on the UW campus seems very appealing, and Sarah finds herself using her poetry journal to subtly declare her feelings for Haddings. Convinced Mr. Haddings is flirting back, she sets off for school in the rain with a poem in her back pocket—one that will declare her feelings once and for all.

Mr. Haddings has noticed Sarah’s attention; the fallout from any perceived relationship with a student is too great a risk, and he has decided to end all speculation that morning.

But everything changes when Mr. Haddings feels a thud on his front bumper when he glances away from the road, and finds Sarah in the street with blood pooling beneath her.

Around Here, Setlist Voting is Serious Business

BTTI_VotingBanner_1

For this year’s Back to the Island, Hanson put up a setlist voting on December 12 with the vote ending on December 18th.  They had 2 polls – 1 had each of the tracks off of their 6 studio albums. The other had just under 50 of their Fan Club Members Only EP songs.  Fans were allowed to pick 10 songs off of each list and the ones with the most votes will be played at Back to the Island’s final show.

Back to the Island this year is in Cancun and will have 3 Hanson shows, a solo show from each Hanson and sets from David Ryan Harris and Nick Santino.  My goal is to always come back hearing some new tracks I’ve never heard live before.  From the lists they’ve posted, there are *7* potential candidates. (And I’m hoping a few more that weren’t on the voting list will pop up as well!)

As I mentioned, I take the voting quite seriously.  For the Members Only songs I knew that the approach I was going to take for my 10 votes was going to be to start with the songs I’ve never heard before. Which put me at 7 songs right off the bat.  With my other 3 votes I went with 3 songs that I have heard 1 time – this past Members Only Event in Tulsa.  I thought that those 3 would be fun to hear again.  My votes were for the following:

Beautiful Eyes
I Can’t Wait
Wait Here For You
All I Have To Give
Take My Time
Bad Solution
Ordinary Words
White Collar Crimes
Panic in the Streets
Show Me The Way

For the album songs, I had to take a different approach.  With the 5 of 5 concerts and last year in Jamaica the guys singing Anthem in its entirety – I have heard every album song at least once (as it turns out, I’ve actually heard them all at least twice.)  There were 16 that I had heard 5 times or less, so I took the majority of my votes from those, picking 7 that I’d like to hear again.  Then once again, I picked 3 others that I thought might be fun. (2 of the 3 were from the top 5 songs I’ve heard live – at least from the albums)  The songs I ended up going with are:

Believe
Lost Without You
Yearbook
Weird
Dying To Be Alive
Tearing It Down
Musical Ride
And I Waited
Minute Without You
Where’s The Love

It can probably be argued that I “wasted” the last 2 votes on the album songs since those 2 are pretty much staples – but after 30 minutes of spreadsheets, databases and much deliberation, I decided it was best not to over think what I was voting for and just get it done with.

Back to the Island kicks off TODAY so we will see once I get back how many of my choices ended up in the set lists for the event.

Product Review: Valhalla Luggage Scale

Never pay overweight charges on your luggage again! The Valhalla Luggage Scale is super easy to use and is tiny enough that you can pack it in your luggage and it won’t take up much room at all.  The scale also doubles as a flashlight if you need to dig through your luggage to find something in the dark.  The scale also easily toggles between measuring in pounds, ounces, kilogram and grams.  It automatically shuts itself off after use and is so easy to use you can weigh your luggage using only one hand.

This scale is incredibly easy to use. Open the packaging, put in the batteries (the directions for which way to put them is on the battery door – took me a second to find it) and you are ready to go! It’s so easy, you can weigh your luggage with one hand and take a picture of yourself doing it with the other! (Note: Although I am leaving for vacation very, very soon – I did these photos long before it was time to pack.  But I will be taking the scale with me and keeping an eye on how heavy my luggage is before and after the trip!)

Try It Tuesday: Latch Hook Pillows

When I was younger, my grandparents used to make latch hook rugs. I remember making a “custom” one for my dolls when I was little by drawing it out on the mesh and then hooking the yarn in.  When I saw that Blitsy had Disney latch hook kits, I couldn’t resist getting Pumbaa (and Simba too, but he isn’t pictured).

Of course, I couldn’t remember how to latch hook and actually had to look up a tutorial on YouTube. I’m so ashamed!

These kits didn’t have the colors on the mesh, which made things a bit complicated.  My mom ended up helping me out because I kept losing my place and I would do maybe 100 pieces of yarn per American Idol 2 part episode!

They will become pillows, but I bought some African fabric and passed them on to my Aunt to turn them into pillows because she is more of a pro than I am 😉  When she has made them I’ll have to make another post to show them off!

CD Review: Spencer James Don’t Shake a Baby

spencer

The Fat Guy
Baby vs. Ferrari
Cavity Search
Suicide Hotline
Black Spandex Pants
It’s a Parrot
Orgasms
Don’t Shake a Baby
Japanese Tourists
Little People
God Bless the Broken Road

Spencer James “Don’t Shake A Baby” is Martin and Lewis, with a little dash of Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. mixed in. James blends both music and dance into his stand-up for a show that’s both anti “jobs” and yet pro “fat kids.”

Spencer James’s comedy career started very early on. At eleven years old, he was the fat kid always getting picked on by school bullies and being ignored by every girl around. An army brat who moved frequently throughout the US as well as internationally, he used stand-up to provide comic relief.

James has entertained audiences all over the country. He was the Winner of the 2014 World Series of Comedy in Las Vegas, Nevada and  “Best of the Fest” at the 2014 Burbank Comedy Festival. He was also recently seen on the Fox television show “Laughs”.

A sort of “personal reveal”, his comedy reflects a variety of influences – Bill Cosby’s storytelling; Mitch Hedberg’s one liners; Richard Pryor’s vulnerability. He admires Bill Hicks, Bill Burr and Christopher Titus for the openness they all share. His comedy gives us his unique perspective on those things in life that he finds funny or weird – stuff like guys in wheelchairs buying ladders at Home Depot.

He discusses his warped reactions to first time relationships. No longer the “fat kid”, he continues to feel its influence on his life and uses it to fuel his comedy.

Currently residing in Denver, CO, where beautiful women abound, he still finds it difficult to relate to them and this provides an endless stream of comic opportunities.

If you’re into comedians who like drugs, don’t like to work and throw the “r word” around – then this is the CD for you.  It was not the CD for me.

I received a free download of this CD in order to write this review. I was not otherwise compensated.
