Book Review: Undeniable

undeniableUndeniable is Bill Nye’s book on Evolution and the Science of Creation.  Part of the reason he wrote the book was due to the debate he recently did with the Creation Museum.  I found the book to be very interesting and I like how Bill explain’s things that may be complicated in such a way that it can easily be understood by everyone – whether they have a background in Science or not.  He explained a bit about the Darwin awards and how not having a fear of death will kill you.

I found it interesting his talk about cloning and how he was against cloning a human. I don’t know all the details around cloning but I’ve always wanted to clone myself to compare and see if my CP is in my DNA or in how my brain developed and to see if we could figure out any differences to maybe get rid of my CP.  May just be a big dream now but you never know with how science is advancing.  He also talks about how it is much easier to clone plants and a lot of strawberries and grapes out there are actually from cloned plants.

This is a very interesting read, thought provoking and as I said – easy to be understood by anyone with some of the reasons why science backs that there is such a thing as evolution and teaching how nature works.

About the Book

“Evolution is one of the most powerful and important ideas ever developed in the history of science. Every question it raises leads to new answers, new discoveries, and new smarter questions. The science of evolution is as expansive as nature itself. It is also the most meaningful creation story that humans have ever found.”—Bill Nye

Sparked by a controversial debate in February 2014, Bill Nye has set off on an energetic campaign to spread awareness of evolution and the powerful way it shapes our lives. In Undeniable: Evolution and the Science of Creation, he explains why race does not really exist; evaluates the true promise and peril of genetically modified food; reveals how new species are born, in a dog kennel and in a London subway; takes a stroll through 4.5 billion years of time; and explores the new search for alien life, including aliens right here on Earth.

With infectious enthusiasm, Bill Nye shows that evolution is much more than a rebuttal to creationism; it is an essential way to understand how nature works—and to change the world. It might also help you get a date on a Saturday night.

Book Review: Easy Origami Animals

origmaiEasy Origami Animals is an easy to use guide to create 23 different animals using origami.  The book starts with the basics, introducing you to the symbols for folding and the basic folds.  Then, each of the 23 animals are shown in detail with instructions on how to properly make them.  There are a lot of fun animals in the book, a couple of fish I’m going to try to make too.

I received a free e-copy of this book in order to write this review, I was not otherwise compensated.

About the Book

Created by an origami master, these 23 models offer a menagerie of easy-to-fold animals. Figures include birds—a cardinal, parrot, bald eagle, and cranes—and a fox, pig, hippo, elephant, lion, and others. Diagrams illustrate every step of the folding process, and full-color pictures depict the completed models. Internationally renowned author John Montroll has significantly increased the origami repertoire with his original designs. Best known as the inspiration behind the single-square, no-cuts, no-glue approach, the American origami expert offers readers meticulously developed folding sequences that allow them to create better models with fewer steps.

Setlist:

I didn’t keep track of any of the setlists
Cost: $30

Recap:

This was a huge festival that took place on the 4th of July.  I remember that it was a bit too much time outside in the sun and I almost passed out at one point.  I also remember that we tried to see Third Eye Blind and there were just tons and tons of people and we ended up squished against a wall. They probably were a bit too well known to be on one of the side stages.  Amy from Evanescence was one of the (if not THE) only female at the show.  My friend’s shirt she bought also got stolen right out from under us.

Where Are They Now:

To be honest I haven’t really kept up with any of these bands because it wasn’t exactly my idea to go to this show. There’s also so many bands that we saw that I don’t feel like looking them all up.  Check them out in wikipedia if you’re interested 😉

Explore your DJ Entertainment Lighting Options

Explore your DJ Entertainment Lighting Options
Working as a DJ, clients often request special lighting effects. It is important to be able to provide the equipment to satisfy these requests. Having a variety of lighting options available is ideal. This includes portable laser light options, color changing lights and programmable programs. Also having standalone LED lighting options available is a plus.
Laser Lights
When the music really gets going and the guests are dancing, adding laser lights to increase the enjoyment of the atmosphere is ideal. This gets the guests more involved in the event and helps them enjoy themselves more. Dancing with lights and lasers overhead recreates a club-like scene.
This type of atmosphere is great for wedding receptions, anniversary parties and even graduation parties. As a DJ, consider having laser lights available for those special requests.
Light Program Boards
A successful DJ also needs programmable lighting boards and varying lighting structures to create special effects. These program boards and structures allow a DJ to program the lights to change, flash or rotate to the beat of songs. The way that lights are used creates ambiance and a mood for the occasion. It is important to know how to use these programs and pieces of equipment to deliver what the client wants to provide their guests.
Select single pieces of DJ lighting equipment or look for DJ lighting packages that help you obtain several lighting options in a single purchase. This helps expand your client base and adds to your available options for guests. The more versatile you are as an entertainment DJ, the more in-demand your services become. I Dj Now  has a variety of lighting options.

Back To The Island Cancun: Travel Day 1

btti

Over the next several Wednesdays I will be sharing all the details of my trip to Cancun for Hanson’s Back to the Island event. (Yes, we’re all aware that Cancun is not an Island.)  For those of you unfamiliar with the event – the past 2 years have been in Jamaica but this year they moved to a resort in Cancun.  The event was from January 7-11 with a concert every night (except the last day when everyone is leaving) which includes 3 Hanson shows as well as a set from special guests Nick Santino and David Ryan Harris. Also included are events with Isaac (mixology), Taylor (after party) and Zac (pottery painting) – but more on all that is still to come.

I’ll start this post with traveling, since I finally got my visa to Bhutan – I had to get up to leave the house at about 2:30 AM as my first flight was taking off at 5:45am.  I was greeted in the morning by my car covered in ice – and then I realized that some of it was even INSIDE when I thought I had cleared off the windshield and there were still spots. I had to rub them with my mittens so I could see through the window and off to the airport I went.  It was 17 degrees. It was quite dark in the car, perhaps because of window tinting (check out Dalo website if you plan auto glass tinting).

I got to the valet area, left my car, got to the airport and had to wait for the Southwest counter to open at 4am.  They had to verify my passport before I could even get on my first flight.  Once that was done security went with no problems and then it was time to wait. I was the only one at the gate for a long time.  I was excited because I didn’t wake up 24 hours early (it was more like 23) and still got A 37 as a boarding number.  Well, it turns out there were only 36 people on the flight! (A1 – 15 are reserved)  They said we could spread out but everyone decided to sit in the first 5 rows because they “wanted to get off the plane quick”  (I’m not sure the extra 4 steps from a couple rows further back would have made all that much difference)  Had I known they were going to do that, I’d have gone to the back myself after pre-boarding.

I ended up with a mother/daughter next to me.  The daughter seemed like she really wanted to sleep, but well, I think Mom was a little bit nervous to fly so for 3 hours (when I was hoping to catch up on some sleep) all I heard was “I love you! Thank you so much for flying with me! I love you!” and then she was trying to teach the kid to play sudoku.  “Can I sleep?” the girl asked – but Mom talked for almost the entire 3 hour flight.  She talked so much she was hoarse by the time the flight landed.

I missed snack service from trying to sleep… and then started having a dizzy spell (which I haven’t had one in a REALLY long time so I was not expecting it) and ended up getting my head as close to my knees as I could and it seemed to pass in a few minutes. Upon landing I grabbed a vitamin water and a snack at a kiosk to make sure that I’d be good to go for the next flight.

Somehow my flight at Atlanta landed at C2 and I only had to go to C5! Usually I am as far apart as humanly possible in these airports so I was excited. They ended up loading up another flight just before ours was supposed to take off because the flight was still in the hanger getting looked at.  Then we found out we had to get a new aircraft and had to go to C12 instead. The new aircraft came from stealing it from a flight heading to DC which ended up getting canceled.  We weren’t delayed all that much despite the new aircraft and the extra checks it needed for going to a different country.

We landed in Mexico and headed to immigration and then customs.  After going through customs they have you hit a red button. If you’re green, you’re good, if you’re red, you are getting randomly selected for a bag check.  I was with 2 other Hanson fans I met up with in Atlanta and 1 of us got a red light and the other 2 green.  Then I found out my roommate for the trip got a red one too.

We found our shuttle to the resort and off we went! It was nice to have a 20 minute ride instead of a 90 minute one.  While we were waiting to check in, my roommate showed up (she got in about the same time as us but was in a different terminal – we were hoping it all spit out to one general transportation area, but it didn’t!)

We checked in to the resort, checked in with Island Gigs for our Hanson credentials, checked out the room and headed to the seafood / pasta restaurant for dinner. I had 2 drinks but neither really were all that strong (and I’m a lightweight – I didn’t feel any of the drinks until the last night!) and then it was time to settle in for Hanson show #1 later that night.

But more on THAT next week 🙂

Product Review: Travel Pillow

For the longest time I have wanted to have a travel pillow for when I fly. I pretty much can not stay awake on flights anymore (probably because I continue to take early morning flights!) and want to be the most comfortable as I can be despite the tiny plane seats.  Enter the Air Comfy Travel Pillow.

The pillow comes in a small bag with a carabiner attached to easily attach it to the outside of your luggage so that you have it handy once you make it to your seat. Simply pull the pillow out of the bag and open the valve to either let it self inflate or to blow air into it.  The valve can also be adjusted to let some air out if you find that you’ve blown it up too much.

Once your flight is over, simply open the valve again and start to roll up the pillow from the opposite side of the valve and the air will leave the pillow and the pillow will roll up small enough to go back into the carrying bag.  I thought that it was going to be difficult to get the pillow back in the bag since it was a bit of a tight squeeze pulling it out when I first got it, but it went back in with ease – something that is needed when you’re packing things back up to deplane.

The pillow also has a strap on the back so you can attach it to your seat and not have to worry about it falling.

Try It Tuesday: Dreamcatcher

When I was in girl scouts we made Dreamcatchers as one of our projects. That dreamcatcher I made is now long, gone, but I was wanting a new one for my new room!  I found a kit on my favorite site, Blitsy, and figured since I made one when I was a kid no problem – this kit should be pretty easy too! Right? WRONG.

It took me weeks and weeks to do it because I hated how it was coming out. Finally I just kind of gave up because I couldn’t make it how I wanted it in my head no matter how hard I tried.  In the end, I’m not happy with the inner part of the circle, but the rest of it I think came out pretty good!  It’s hanging anyway 🙂

Book Review: Science For Her

scienceAs a female in a Science field, I was looking forward to reading this book.  It is a satirical teaching of science acting as though it is one of those girly magazines.  Unfortunately, I just didn’t get it. I didn’t even finish the book because I did not find it to be funny at all.  I wanted to like it, but the further I got into it, the less impressed I was with it, so I didn’t even finish reading it.

Don’t waste your time on this one!

I received a free e-copy of this book in order to write this review. I was not otherwise compensated.

About the Book

Megan Amram, one of Forbes’ “30 Under 30 in Hollywood & Entertainment,” Rolling Stone’s “25 Funniest People on Twitter,” and a writer for NBC’s hit show Parks and Recreation, delivers a politically, scientifically, and anatomically incorrect “textbook” that will have women screaming with laughter, and men dying to know what the noise is about.

In the vein of faux expert books by John Hodgman and Amy Sedaris, Science…for Her! is ostensibly a book of science written by a denizen of women’s magazines. Comedy writer and Twitter sensation Megan Amram showcases her fiendish wit with a pitch-perfect attack on everything from those insanely perky tips for self-improvement to our bizarre shopaholic dating culture to the socially mandated pursuit of mind-blowing sex to the cringe-worthy secret codes of food and body issues.

Part hilarious farce, part biting gender commentary, Amram blends Cosmo and science to highlight absurdities with a machine-gun of laugh-inducing lines that leave nothing and no one unscathed. Subjects include: this Spring’s ten most glamorous ways to die; tips for hosting your own big bang; what religion is right for your body type; and the most pressing issue facing women today: kale!!!

Be prepared to laugh about anything in this outrageous satirical gem.

Book Review: Unlocked

unlockedUnlocked is a novel about genetically engineered sex slaves who are modified to heal quickly and be unable to get diseases.  At first they were just supposed to be soldiers but they are now sex-addicted doms.  Doc is selling them to business investors to use for the night (or more) and has a business suit there when a fire breaks out.  A fireman comes in and rescues Chanze and believes that he is the business man instead – who actually was killed in the fire.  Chanze thinks that he is a prisoner, but as luck would have it, Delano, the firefighter who saved him, is also one of the Spcecial Op soldiers who has made it on his own and creates a plan to save not only Chanze, but all the other men who Doc has under his “care”.

Only one problem – they all have chips implanted and they don’t think there is any way to deactivate them without the Doc realizing giving them little time to escape.  Or is there another way?  Meanwhile, the nanos in Chanze and Delano have joined the two of them meaning they will mate for life and if one dies the other will die too.  This could make their plan even more dangerous if not properly executed!

Definitely an interesting approach to a romance novel, but I liked the bit of technology aspect to it.

About the Book

The Special Ops genetic experiments were designed to create super soldiers, not sex-addicted doms.

When Delano Briggs, BDSM club owner and volunteer firefighter, is called to aid in the evacuation of a burning New York hotel, he thinks it’s just another job.

But after rescuing the irresistibly sexy Chanze, he learns that behind the velvet curtains of the five-star hotel is one of the most exclusive, and immoral, prostitution rings in the country. For the men at the Cloister aren’t merely lovers for hire, but genetically enhanced sex slaves, created to provide the brothel’s rich clientele with the most insatiable doms and delicious subs.

Kept against his will by the doomsday chip implanted in his brain, Chanze sees no chance of escape. Until Delano and his three fellow super-enhanced operatives infiltrate the club for a walk on the wild side.
