Book Review: Nursery Rhyme Delights

nurseryNursery Rhyme Delights has 6 different nursery rhymes featured in it (Humpty Dumpty, Jack and Jill, Little Bo Peep, Little Boy Blue, Little Miss Muffet and Hey Diddle Diddle) The book is made up of mixed media illustrations done by Kristi Abbott, inspired by her favorite childhood nursery rhymes.  They kind of look like really, really intricate scrapbook pages for the nursery rhyme, Humpty Dumpty was about 5 pages long and looks AWESOME!  Certainly very inspiring for a crafter and probably very interesting for a child who is reading the book or looking at it at bed while having it read to him or her by mom or dad. All the other nursery rhymes are amazing as well and it certainly gave me a lot of ideas for my scrapbook but I am not sure that I have the patience to actually follow through with it.  This was no doubt a ton of work to put together but it looks absolutely amazing!

I received a free e-copy of this book in order to write this review. I was not otherwise compensated.

About the book

Nursery Rhyme Delights is an artistic children’s book designed to help children learn six well-known nursery rhymes in a fun and interactive way. It combines original hand collaged illustrations, playful typography and an interactive memory game.

Additional downloads are available from Kristi Abbott’s website (www.kristiabbott.com) to promote further fun and learning.

The series of six illustrations used in the book were inspired by Kristi’s favourite nursery rhymes as a little girl. When creating the art works, memories and visuals came flooding back to her from childhood. The fun, the giggles and the quirky twist of images have been captured through beautiful collaged papers and mixed media. Those early years spent sitting with her grandmothers looking and listening to bedtime stories, nursery rhymes and fairytales have had a lifetime impact.

About Kristi: From early childhood, Kristi has spent her life travelling between Sydney, Australia and Saint Paul, Minnesota. She was seldom without a book, a Barbie doll and a set of colouring pencils. Later after graduate degrees in Design and an MBA she rose to be the CEO of an online simulation company that merged visual imagery with complex teaching material. In 2012 she decided to ditch the corporate life for one where she could focus on her passion – to become a living artist. She currently lives in downtown Saint Paul in an artist’s cooperative with her dog Disco – from whom she is constantly inspired!

This is her first illustrated book – hopefully one of many to come.

Hanson in Sayreville, NJ

Tuesday night was my last Hanson concert of the ANTHEM World Tour. I think. At least for this leg.  It was also the band’s second to last show of the tour. (I always vow not to miss the last show of the tour but have yet to actually go to one)  I think for the first time EVER I actually made it to the Starland Ballroom in the amount of time it should have taken for me to get there.  (One year we left at 11am and didn’t get there until doors? at 7? I live 2 hours away…)  Starland was actually severely damaged last year when Superstorm Hurricane whatever it’s being called Sandy made its way through our area.  They completely renovated and re-opened in September.  Honestly, it had been a while since I had been there and it didn’t seem all that different.  Upgraded? Yes. But the general layout and the ADA section being waaaaaay in the back was all the same.  Although I was worried that where we were, Taylor’s piano would block everything… and it didn’t so that was a pleasant surprise!

David Ryan Harris opened up and I think he did the same. exact. setlist as the other 2 times I had seen him.  I mean, I guess it’s easier that way for him but with Hanson you get a lot of fans going to a lot of shows and I always appreciate it when an opener acknowledges this and switches things up a bit.  I do love his voice but I just can’t get in to him as an opener for Hanson.  I don’t know why they always bring these more mellow guys on tour with them.  Any other place I would LOVE them but before a Hanson show I want to get hyped up, not be on the verge of taking a nap.

Then it was time for Hanson! This was my 93rd show.  And I didn’t get any new songs which was a bummer (I missed out on their cover of Ain’t Too Proud To Beg which is a HUGE bummer! Maybe they’ll do it in Jamaica?) But they did do Too Much Heaven acapella again (though unlike in Pittsburgh, they used a mic) and it was interesting to see how different it was (moreso based on venue and crowd reaction) in Jersey vs Pittsburgh.  In Pittsburgh Zac told us to be quiet and pretty much everyone shut up.  In Jersey they told us to be quiet and it got loud because everyone was “sshing” each other.

For solos – Isaac did For Your Love. Again. So that is 5 out of 7 that I got that from him.  Zac mixed things up with The Walk. I want to say that I had no repeats from Zac in the solo department, but I may be lying (I don’t have setlists handy  to double check but if anything he may have repeated only 1) and Taylor did Save Me… again.  Not sure that count either but the funny thing is before the tour I was talking about how I was hoping that some of the rare-er performed songs would stay that way.  Save Me up until this album I had heard live 2x. Once at 5 of 5 where they played every album song, ever, so that hardly counts.  Now my count is much higher thanks to Taylor’s solos. grumble grumble.

The rest of the show was pretty typical… but for the encore they brought out another mic and David Ryan Harris joined them.  Taylor said something about it being “that time of year” and so they did Merry Christmas Baby and Run Rudolph Run for the encore with DRH on guitar and he sang a verse in Merry Christmas Baby as well.  Then Taylor was talking about how we did the walk (well not me but others) and how they liked walking around the parking lot and that they liked our energy and our enthusiasm for Jesus’ birth?  I’m not sure if that’s what he said exactly but I guess it was because everyone got excited for the Christmas songs.

After the show it was FREEZING and the line at the bus seemed a bit insane.  I had 2 hours to get home ahead of me so I waited a bit for the parking lot to clear but then headed home.  Although I didn’t listen to the GPS when it told me to take an alternate exit and got caught in some traffic because a car was stuck under a tractor trailer… I was only stuck for a couple of minutes, fortunately.  Then when I got closer to home a car or two had hit a deer (they were pulled off on the side of the road) and I got to drive through all the mess of it that was in the road. Gross. Hopefully the cars aren’t banged up too bad.  Then I was trying to be hyper aware of any other deer out there. Fortunately only saw one that was eating on the side of the road and stayed put!

Book Review: In the Secret Service

secretserviceAs a boy, Jerry Parr watched a movie staring Ronald Reagan about the secret service.  Years later, Parr was a member of the Secret Service protecting President Reagan.  While that seems to be the selling point of the book, it is really only a small portion of the story of Jerry and his life in the Secret Service.  I thought this book was incredibly interesting and the Secret Service always seems so mysterious to me so it was nice to read about them from an insiders perspective to see just what goes on when you are protecting the president.

This book is just under 200 pages and is an easy read but incredibly interesting and insightful.  You don’t have to be in to History or Politics (I’m not big into either) to enjoy this book.

I received a free e-copy of this book in order to write this review. I was not otherwise compensated.

About the Book

Meet Jerry Parr. In 1981, he was the agent standing next to Ronald Reagan when John Hinckley, Jr., stepped out of the crowd, intent on killing the president. In the Secret Service is an adrenaline-filled ride through the life of the agent who saved Ronald Reagan’s life. Jerry spent much of his life as a silent eyewitness to history, with a gun at his fingertips. What motivates a man who is ready at a moment’s notice to step into the path of a bullet? In In the Secret Service, you’ll also follow Jerry’s inner journey. That journey led him from the halls of the powerful to the streets of the poor in Washington, D.C., to the mountain passes of war-torn El Salvador to help orphans.

You won’t want to miss this insider’s perspective on the Secret Service and a look into the heart of a man who was—and is—ready to sacrifice himself for another. At times heart-pounding, at times heartrending, this richly textured memoir of a Secret Service Agent will first move you to the edge of your seat, then to the depths of your soul.

Product Review: Wantable.com Makeup Box

The big trend now seems to be these “box of the month” clubs where you can get makeup, accessories, food, etc. While they are great, a lot of times you just get whatever they are sending that month which means you might get makeup colors you’d never consider using or other items that you are just not interested in at all.  That is unless you sign up at Wantable.com.  When you sign up you take a “style quiz” and rate items based on if you like it, love it, or dislike it.  You’ll get a mixture of items that you like and love but not items that you’ve ranked as dislike.  Each box comes with full-sized premium makeup. (Or accessories or intimate products depending on which you choose – but I reviewed the makeup box.)

The style quiz is quick and easy based on makeup types (eye liner, nailpolish, blush, etc) colors (neutral, bright, etc) or types (matte, powder, etc) and you’ll get your personalized box delivered to your door.  I was super excited to get this box and really pleased with the results.  Everything in the box is something that I will surely enjoy using.

I received the following in my box, the packing slip gives you all the details on what you’ve received in case you want to buy more once you’re done with the ones in your box. It also lists the retail prices as well (mine varied from $10-$24)

29 Cosmetics Dew Lip Gloss French Oak
Rainbow Honey Nail Lacquer Wistful
Girlactik Beauty Eye Glaze Glamour
Whipe Hand Cosmetics Cheek Flash Beachhouse
Skiin Skiin Instant Skin Tightener & Line Filler Sample

I am very impressed with the box and love that it is customized to items that I like and will definitely be using!  Boxes retail for $40 for a one-time purchase or $36 for a monthly subscriptions.  Subscribers will received monthly personalized boxes and can cancel or skip at any time.

I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

Book Review: My Little Pony: Pony Tales Vol 1

ponyPony Tales Volume 1 contains six different graphic stories about the My Little Ponies.  I’m really not sure why I continue try and read these – for 2 reasons.  A) Graphic Novels always come up too tiny to read the text on my nook. B) I can not get over how the re-vamp of the ponies has completely RUINED them from the ponies that were around when I was a kid.  Those were adorable. These are weird looking and have huge eyes.

Despite the fact that I hate how the ponies look, the stories are always fun (even if I do need to magnify each page and it takes me a bit longer to read than it should) There is always a lesson taught in the stories and they are usually full of action, drama and adventure and are a great way to get girls into the graphic novel genre that they otherwise might not be interested in checking out.

About the Book

Six spotlights focusing on everyone’s favorite Ponies! Twilight Sparkle, Rainbow Dash, Rarity, Fluttershy, Pinkie Pie, and Applejack each get a whole issue devoted to them.

Jammy Jams Hair Metal Goes Lullaby

jammyjams

I had previously reviewed the Once Upon a Rhyme compilation, and now Jammy Jams has released their 4th release – “Hair Metal Goes Lullaby”  Jammy Jams elevates lullaby music to a whole new level of awesomeness. Whether you are a child of the 80s or are shopping for a little one born yesterday, these gentle lullabies will captivate and delight. You have to listen to believe that songs originally performed by heavy hitters like Motley Crue or Bon Jovi could be transformed into these incredibly peaceful and comforting arrangements. Like a hug from your best pair of spandex pants, Jammy Jams’ soothing sounds embrace, providing the reassurance needed ofr you or your little dream warrior to slip into a cozy slumber.

It’s never to early to start your kids on the classics of hair metal with Jammy Jams!  With the first CD I wasn’t sure what to expect – with this one that I was reviewing I knew that it would be absolutely amazing and it did not disappoint.  Who knew listening to Bon Jovi could soothe me to sleep?  When I think of Whitesnake Here I Go Again, I don’t really think about going to sleep.  But with the Jammy Jams version? It’s a whole other story.

Book Review: A Tale of Two Daddies

A Tale of Two Daddies is a super adorable book about a girl who has 2 Daddies – Poppa and Daddy.  She is with a boy in the park who has all sorts of questions – which one would build your house in a tree? And which dad helps you when you skin your knee? And the girl answers each one with Poppa, Daddy, Neither or Both!  The book is all in rhyme which makes it even more fun.

I think this is a great book to teach other kids about families that have two daddies – they’re no different than any other family – they still make birthday cakes and give lots of love!

I received a free e-copy of this book in order to write this review, I was not otherwise compensated.

About the Book

A Tale of Two Daddies is a playground conversation between two children. The boy says he heard that the girl has two dads. The girl says that is right. She has Daddy and Poppa. True to a child’s curiosity, practical questions follow. “Which dad helps when your team needs a coach? / Which dad cooks you eggs and toast?”
To which she answers: “Daddy is my soccer coach. / Poppa cooks me eggs and toast.” It becomes clear that the family bond is unburdened by any cultural discomforts.

Goodies Box September

My September Goodies Box had a bit of a journey to get to me.  It got shipped out before I moved, but arrived after I moved so then it had to get forwarded and apparently they don’t pay to forward packages so we had to pay $9.14 to pick it up. (When the box is $7 to begin with) So that kind of stunk, but I wanted to try all the goodies so we paid the ransom.

Chocolate Stuffed Marshmallows

by Gud-Fud

Sweet tooth? Can’t beat this! No fat, no trans fat and 50 calories per package. These marshmallows are stuffed with chocolate for a great snack.

I thought these were good, but you barely tasted the chocolate, it was a bit overpowered by marshmallow.  Nice and bite sized though

Sun Dried Tomato, Basil & Feta

by Kashi

Sweet sundried tomato, tangy feta and bright basil add Mediterranean flair to air-popped chickpea crisps. They’re equally delicious and nutritious.

Thought that the flavoring on this one was a bit over powering, but still good enough to eat.

Thyme

by MJM Distributors

Rich and sweet with floral flavor and aroma, this pure honey is made with thyme flowers grown on the Greek Isles. Add nature’s sweetness to your day.
This was excellent honey!

Lemon

by Nestle Pure Life

Purified water combined with a delicious “splash” of natural lemon flavor. This zero-calorie drink is the perfect alternative to soda.
I liked that it was 0 calories and not just boring old water, but the lemon flavoring was a bit too strong.

Savory Tea

by Numi Tea

Skip the milk and honey; this is not your typical tea. Made with veggies, herbs and decaf tea, it’s a robust beverage that’s savory and substantial.

This tea scares me – Tomato Mint? So I’ve yet to try it.

Gimbal’s Scottie Dogs Licorice

by Gimbal’s

Soft, chewy and sweet, these adorable dog-shaped candies are bursting with the bold flavor of licorice root and pure anise.Pretty big dogs, but good.

Fuji Apple Chips

by Bare Fruit

Slowly baked in a wood-burning oven to intensify the natural flavor of Fuji apples, these chips are sweet, crisp and satisfying.
2 thumbs up on these.

Book Review: A Tale of Two Mommies

A Tale of Two Mommies is about a little boy who has two Mommies – Momma and Mommy.  He meets up with a couple of other kids at the beach who ask him all sorts of questions about which of his mommies does things for him.  The boy answers with either Momma, Mommy, Neither Or Both!  Everything is in rhyme so it has a bit of a sing-song feel to it and is super adorable.

I think this is a great book to teach other kids about families that have two mommies – they’re no different than any other family – they still are there for you when you have a bad dream or skin your knee and give you lots of love!

I received a free e-copy of this book in order to write this review, I was not otherwise compensated.

About the Book

A Tale of Two Mommies is a beach conversation among three children. One boy asks another boy about having two mommies. A young girl listening in asks some questions too.
True to a child’s curiosity, practical questions follow. “Which mom is there when you want to go fishing? / Which mom helps out when Kitty goes missing?” To which he answers: “Mommy helps when I want to go fishing. / Both Mommies help when Kitty goes missing.”
A Tale of Two Mommies is intended for 4-8 year olds.
This book lets us look inside one non-traditional family, a same sex couple and their son. As the children talk, it’s clear this boy lives in a nurturing environment where the biggest issues are the everyday challenges of growing up.
