Book Review: Eating My Feelings

Eating My Feelings is the autobiography of Mark Rosenberg.  Before picking this book to review, I knew nothing about him.  In fact, I just thought that the ice cream on the cover looked good and that is why I chose to read it.  I do tend to screw myself over when I “judge a book by its cover” but this was a good pick!  Mark’s family is a little bit crazy – I couldn’t even really follow his family tree.  But basically all you need to know is that his parents got divorced and his dad married an evil stepmother that he was convinced was out to kill him.  There are several hilarious stories with proof of how she wanted to kill him.

After dealing with being a fat kid, going to fat camp and being paid by his evil stepmother to lose weight and eat gross food, we find Mark as adult where he realizes that he is eating his feelings.  He is a great writer and I really couldn’t help but want to read this book.  Each chapter starts with a superhero-esque paragraph… “when we were last with our heroine” type things that I thought were a nice touch to each of the chapters.

Mark is a writer and blogger and now I guess I’m going to have to go check out some of his other works because I just loved his writing style.

About the Book

New from the author of Blackouts and Breakdowns–and in the tradition of Josh Kilmer-Purcell and Chelsea Handler–a collection of funny essays skewering the author’s struggles with weight and body image, both as a kid in the 1980s and as a gay man in the 2000s.

Mark Rosenberg has had more ups and downs with his weight than Oprah–but unlike Oprah, no one gives a sh*t. Coming of age very outrageously as an overweight, soon-to-be gay kid, he learns to relate to others by way of his beloved Melrose Place and Clueless–which serves him well when exiled to fat camp and  faced with an opportunity to bribe an adulterous counselor or poison his stepmother by birthday cake–and thinks nothing of dressing as Homey the Clown (in blackface) for Halloween. This sets him up for adulthood in the image-obsessed world of gay men in New York City, where he hires personal trainers he wants to sleep with, applies an X-rated twist to Julie & Julia in an attempt to reach blogger stardom, and has an imaginary relationship with the man on the P90X workout infomercials that becomes a little bit too real. Hilarious, heartwarming (as if), and especially scandalous, Eating My Feelings leaves no stone unturned and no piece of red velvet cake uneaten.

Book Review: Crazy About Basketball

Crazy About Basketball is a children’s book that teaches all about the game.  From the history to how you play, everything is a poem about the sport!  I love these books that are completely done in rhyme because I can’t make anything rhyme (at least not intentionally!) and I find it fascinating that people can write entire books of poetry.  The illustrations that accompany the book are also great and I think this is a great book to teach your child more about basketball!

About the Book

The footsteps pound / the shoes all squeak / the crowd is loud / the floorboard creak / but still we can hear it–that smallest sound– / the one that’s high above the ground / the most important noise of all / that swishing of the basketball!

This new collection of more than 40 poems by Loris Lesynski captures the joys, thrills, and challenges of one of the most popular sports in the schoolyard today. Crazy About Basketball!is full of energy and humor, and is sure to appeal to anyone who has ever played the sport.

Wonderfully ridiculous artwork and catchy, rhythmic poems highlight both the silly and serious side of the sport, with emphasis on training, tactics, and teamwork, but most of all, on having fun. This is a perfect complement to Lesynski and Rasmussen’s previous collaboration, Crazy About Soccer!

Midnight Red at DDML

Friday afternoon boyband Midnight Red did a performance in the Dunkin Donuts Music Lounge.  I really didn’t know much about them but I have a few friends who absolutely love them so I figured it would be worth it to check them out.  The 5 guys did a chat and live performance where they performed Rihanna’s Diamonds, Bruno Mars Treasure and their latest single, Take me Home (available on iTunes now!)  They won me over when they said that even though they toured with NKOTB and BSB they really love NSYNC and hold them as the pinnacle of boybands.  They also said if the Spice Girls got back together they’d want to work with them or working with their label mate Katy Perry would be cool as well.

They’ll be heading out on the road this fall with Austin Mahone on the east coast.  Unfortunately it looks like I won’t be able to make it to any of the dates but if you can be sure to check them out!

After the performance we got to do photos with the guys and they were saying how they liked my shoes.  When I told them I designed them myself they asked if I used Nike ID and I said yes and then they asked if I could design them shoes too! haha.

Here I am intently watching them during the chat. We weren’t allowed to take any photos so I just tried to take it all in and stole a few from KC101’s site for the scrapbook 😉

Product Review: Noxicare

Noxicare™ Natural Pain Relief is a breakthrough natural, patented pain relief formula that is a proprietary combination of 7 of the world’s most potent natural pain relievers that quickly and effectively alleviate inflammation, muscle aches and nerve pain (burning feet)—with NO known side effects and without a prescription.
After my February car accident, I’d been experiencing some pain in my knee.  The doctor doesn’t think anything is wrong, but it continues to hurt, especially after long trips where I am driving (stuck in traffic repeatedly hitting the brakes is the worst.) so there must be something wrong.
After a recent trip I decided to try using Noxicare to see if anything happened.  I thought that I would be up all night once again with the knee pain, but it did lessen it enough that I was able to fall asleep without a problem.  The cream is a yellow color but once you rub it in, you don’t even know it is there.  It has a slight odor but nothing gross at all.  I will certainly be continuing to use this product in hopes that it will make this knee pain a little more bearable until maybe we can figure out what is  really going on and causing it!

Be sure to check out Noxicare on Facebook

I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

Book Review: Playing with Purpose: Football

Another Playing with Purpose book by Mike Yorkey, only this time it is about Football (I previously reviewed his Baseball and Basketball Playing with Purpose books).  Playing with Purpose Inside the Lives and Faith of The NFL’s Most Intriguing Players –  Jared Allen, Colin Kapernick, Drew Brees and Others. Each chapter focuses on the story of a different player in the NFL and how their Faith helps them be the player that they are. Near the end of the book there is a chapter with more of a compilation of some other players who have a strong faith as well, but for whatever reason were not chosen to be the main focus of the book.

There are a lot of different stories about all the players and how their faith has impacted or changed their careers.  It was definitely an interesting read even though I am not a football fan and really didn’t know of many of the players mentioned.

I received a free e-copy of this book from the publisher in order to write this review I was not otherwise compensated.

Book Review: The Big Hairy Secret

Well, I probably should have thought a little bit more about what “The Big Hairy Secret” was before agreeing to read this book.  I started it and it seemed innocent enough – Flo  and her mom move to a new apartment building where she meets Furry.  She thinks he is weird but figures she’d see what he is all about.  While hanging out in the basement while Furry does his laundry, Flo discovers The Big Hairy Secret in the apartment building.

Yes, Spiders.  So, on that note, I stopped reading the book about halfway through.   I can not deal with spiders and even illustrations in a childrens book are going to give me nightmares.  I can’t believe I had to stop reading a book geared for 7-8 year olds, but what can I say? I’m a wuss.

I received a free e-copy of this book in order to write this review. I was not otherwise compensated.

About the Book

Flo Gardner isn’t exactly thrilled when she and her mom move into Corman Towers, a giant apartment building in the middle of the city. To call their new home strange is an understatement. And things only get weirder when she meets Ferdinand, better known as Furry. It doesn’t take Flo long to realize that there’s more than one secret lurking in her new home.

For ages 7-8. From the Furry and Flo series.

*Funny, quirky chapter book series featuring two main characters kids can relate to
*Humorous, quirky black-and-white artwork throughout (both full-page and spot illustrations)
*Supernatural aspect with werewolves and other monsters presented in a funny, appealing way (not scary!)
*Combination action, adventure, & mystery stories – kids can follow along and try to solve mysteries and problems with Furry & Flo
