Product Review: Mary Kay #GlamourLook

Recently I got to try out a Mary Kay Vox Box from Influenster which contained the following makeup items:

Mary Kay Lash Love Lengthening (I <3 Black $15) – LASHlicious! Long. Strong. Seriously separated lashes.

I actually tend to stay away from mascara because whenever I go to put it on, after I blink it ends up below my eye and I look like I’m about ready to head out to play an afternoon baseball game with my eye black.  I was super worried I was going to have that problem again (even when my friends use their make up brands and apply it on me, I have the same problem) but I did not! So I am quite happy with this addition to my makeup collection.

Mary Kay Lash Primer ($15) – Dramatic definition. Fuller looking lashes.

I used this primer before using the Lash Love so that my have been why I had such great success.  Either way, the primer definitely make my eye lashes look fuller!

Mary Kay Cream Eye Color / Concealer Brush ($10) – The perfect brush for applying any cream product

This worked just as well as I thought it would. No complaints here!

Mary Kay Cream Eye Color – Violet Storm ($22) – Soft, creamy, long-wearing forumla

I am not sure I would have chosen this color for myself, but it actually didn’t look all that bad! I’ve never used Cream Eye Color before but with the brush it was super easy to apply and no mess!

Mary Kay True Dimensions Lip Stick in Pink Cherie ($18) – Intensely moisturizing. Exquisitely smoothing.

I think that this color was a bit different than anything I would have chosen for myself, it is subtle and light.

(All prices are suggested retail.)

Check out the photo gallery for products of all the photos and some before and afters of my Mary Kay makeover 🙂

Get Glue April!

I have 3 Get Glue accts and usually I don’t get all 3 stickers I’ve requested every month but in April I did!  I’m trying to collect certain shows (for now) so that is why I am loving the new pick what stickers you want feature.  I think it’s easy to figure out what ones I’m trying for based on the stickers I got 🙂

Get Glue May

Still working on my core shows, though I did throw a few random extras in on these pages.  I think I have almost all the Pretty Little Liar stickers I earned (of course not the new season has started up so I’ll be behind again) and I’m still working on Dexter and Gossip Girl.  Tossed a couple other shows in the mix now too – like Glee.

Book Review: Legally Bieber: Justin Bieber at 18

Legally Bieber: Justin Bieber at 18 is a biography about Justin – but rather than focus on his entire life (the author has already written one biography on the superstar) it focuses on his 18th year.  Bieber is now officially an adult (and at the time of writing this is now 19) and is now in control of his money that was previously put aside for him until he turned of age. He is no longer required to tell his mother where he is going and she no longer gives him an allowance from his earnings.  How will the year go?  Each chapter is split up into 1 month of his 18th year and what he did in that time.

Seeing his schedule month by month makes you realize just how much and how strenuous it is. The kid is all over the world, quite literally, and is jam packed with all sorts of appearances.  An interesting read, but most of the info can be found in the media if you follow his career or the trending topics at all.

I received a free e-copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley in order to write this review. I was not otherwise compensated.

About the Book

Justin Bieber is 18. He can legally drink, drive and be  whatever he wants to be. Justin Bieber is legally an adult. But the question  remains… Is the teen sensation up to being a man?
Legally  Bieber…Justin Bieber At 18: An Unauthorized Look at His First Year As an  Adult follows the multi-platinum singer from his 18th birthday, through a new  album and a monster tour. We are at his back as he acts and reacts to personal  and professional challenges. In this month-by-month odyssey, we see the young  singer just this side of manhood; acting the seasoned professional, acting the  fool and, at the end of the day, acting decidedly human and not quite grown up.  It is a year full of high drama with lessons learned, often the hard way, and  the kind of education that can only be learned at the feet of pop culture and  stardom.
Legally Bieber: Justin Bieber At 18: An Unauthorized Look at  His First Year As an Adult is his truth laid bare. Can he handle it? Can  you?

Product Review: Sinful Shine

Sinful Shine with Gel Tech is a new nail polish from Sinfulcolors.  The polish comes in 32 colors (http://sinfulcolors.com/collections/sinfulshine) and is 5x more flossy than a patent leather shoe!  The Gel Tech technology formula provides opulent, rich color and a brilliant shine finish!

For a while i was on a nailpolish “kick”, but then i was getting annoyed because by the next day, my nails were all sorts of chipped and looked terrible.  If i was going to make the effort to paint my nails I wanted the color to last for a while!  When I saw on Influenster about the Sinful Shine with Gel Tech polishes I knew that I had to try them out.  They are exclusively at Walgreens and the price is right at only $2.99 – I wouldn’t feel bad spending that much if the color didn’t work out – and if it did – then I wouldn’t feel bad going back to get myself a rainbow assortment of colors!

I chose a blue called “Break Away” as my first color to try. The polish went on no problem and covered well in 2 coats. It looks glossy and great! I have now had it on for just over 24 hours and there is not a chip to be seen.  The real test will be tonight when I go to a concert and am reaching in and out of my purse, clapping, etc.  I will be sure to update this post with the results of that test.

After the concert – 1 nail chipped, but it also happened to be one of the nails I had put another coat of a different nail polish on, so I am not going to hold it against Sinful Shine’s gel tech.  The nails without an added coat of a different polish all withstood me digging through my bag, clapping, eating, etc without any problems.  It may be time for another trip to Walgreens to pick up a few more colors!

I was told about this item being available through Influenster and by buying a polish and doing several tasks on their site I am entered for incentives.  I was not asked to post this review on my site I am doing so only because I thought it may be of interest to my readers.

Product Review: Dr Scholl’s For Her

I don’t know about you, but wearing heels isn’t all that comfortable for me.  I honestly only wear them if I absolutely have to and even then I try to find a way to weasel in to wearing sneakers.  However, Dr Scholls For Her has come up with the great idea for insoles for heels!  They also have some adhesive on them so that they won’t slip around because it’s tough enough wearing heels you don’t need the insoles sliding around causing more trouble for you!

Each package comes with obviously a pair and they are labeled left and right, have extra cushion for the arch of your foot and make wearing those heels just a little bit more comfortable.  If you have to wear heels every day for work – I feel sorry for you – but definitely look into Dr Scholls for her for some relief!  They are also clear in color so it won’t be obvious that you are wearing them to others – but to your feet – they’ll notice and thank you!

Dr. Scholl’s® For Her is the first full line of foot care products designed specifically with women’s needs in mind. Whether it’s insoles for heels and flats, our anti-friction products to help prevent shoe rubbing and blisters, the entire collection enables you to enjoy the things you want to do – not just the things you need to do – by enhancing foot comfort.

I received a free pair of in soles to try out for being a bzzagent and am sharing my findings with my readers.

Book Review: 99 Reasons Everyone Hates Facebook

If you have a Facebook then there are no doubt things that your “friends” on there do that drive you NUTS.  If not, you are a robot and not a human.  There are 99 different things in this book that someone that you are friends with on facebook can do that will annoy you – or make you hate facebook.

For example – Sideways Photos! (And the author’s comments on this reason are sideways too. argh.)

The author’s commentary on each of the reasons had me L-O-Ling (but not for real.)

Am I guilty of any of these 99 reasons? Probably.  There were a couple that I am pretty sure I fall under and I am sure there are plenty more that my “friends” would say I fall under that I may disagree with. (And I’m sure I can put these “friends” into categories that they will deny they belong in as well.)

Honestly, I could probably write my own book in response to the things in this book, but I will spare you. (And my family will be the ones to suffer with my rants over idiots on Facebook and how I should go back to not allowing anyone over 40 to “be my friend”)

Anyway – if you have a facebook and the people that you have on it sometimes piss you off (and I am saying this has to be EVERYONE or else you don’t have very many “friends”) then you should read this book.  If all 99 reasons don’t give you a laugh, probably 50 will and that is good enough.

About the Book

Writer Emmet Purcell is a simple man with simple tastes. He likes keeping things short and simple, which is why Facebook appealed to him when it first surfaced.  However, as it inevitably transformed from being a well-loved social outlet for friends and family into an egotistical, duck pose-laden, virtual farming-centric nightmare, he decided to take a humorous tongue-in-cheek ‘poke’ at the social website in his new release 99 Reasons Everyone Hates Facebook.

“With over one billion worldwide users, Facebook has become a part of our social identity…for good or ill. Mostly ill,” says Purcell.  “But rather than wag a disapproving finger at the website itself, I decided to point out such inanities as creating a Facebook page for your pets, giving out WAY too much personal information, Face-Bragging and being one of the 48,000 people who have been suckered into clicking on ‘Join if you love your dad/mom/Jesus.”

.

99 Reasons Everyone Hates Facebook consists of nine chapters that contain 10-12 ‘Reasons’ each, with each chapter focusing on some of the biggest Facebook offenders around. For example:

Reason #1 – Huge numbers of people gather together on Facebook to form the most pointless of groupsReason #23 – Posting song lyrics as a status messageReason #33 – Spending real money on virtual goodsReason #64 – The plight of Facebook’s only other Mark ZuckerbergReason #70 – Facebook was mean to a really, really old womanReason #95 – Don’t like Timeline? Tough luck

Book Review: The Sparkle Factory

The Sparkle Factory is about Tarina Tarantino and her creations in jewelry and accessories and how she got into it and how she gets creative.  The book is full of lots of wonderful photos of her jewelry in addition to her story, which were very distracting when I was trying to read because they are all just so fascinating!  She gives some insight on starting her own business and how 9/11 made her need to downsize but how she continued to follow her dream despite the setback. (For her and so many others.)

Even if you are not into jewelry and accessories, this is an interesting story about following your dreams, finding your creativity and starting your own successful business that would be a great read for anyone looking to do those things, I am always curious to see how others find their creative inspiration – whether it be making jewelry, writing music or in my case – scrapbooking. (Or coming out with a website layout.)  Ultimately I think that it all comes from the same place it’s just a matter of figuring out where to find it and how to use it to your full advantage when it strikes.

However if you are into jewelry – this book will be even more perfect for you as she talks a lot about tools, workspace, choosing the right materials, etc. that I am sure will be very helpful to any who wish to follow in Tarina’s footsteps. There are chapters on necklaces, earrings, etc and she makes such cute and colorful things!

Hunter Hayes at Oakdale

Saturday night, Hunter Hayes headlined a SOLD OUT show at Oakdale.  Funny story about how I got a ticket to this show.  I had seen that Country 925 was doing a presale and in it, I kept pulling up 3rd row.  I debated about it a bit but ultimately did not buy it. (It was also the night One Direction was in Hershey and I was thinking I might go down there to see them so I was torn.)  Then one morning I woke up to a “Thank you for your Purchase” email.  I had apparently used the ticket app on my phone to buy a ticket when I was half asleep one night.  I guess my subconscious REALLY wanted to go.

Cory from Country 925 came out to intro the show a bit and then said to stay tuned for what sounded like “Sarah Hayes” the girl behind me was convinced that she said “Sir Hayes” and that it would be Hunter and then was worried maybe Hunter had a girlfriend.  I guess a girlfriend who took her boyfriend’s last name or maybe they had the same last name to begin with. A girl certainly did come out to open the show and she violated my #1 rule of opening acts.  She never said her name!! She introduced her guitarist and mentioned his name was Ben multiple times through the set but never said her name.  Turns out – she is Sara Haze. (And was not wearing a wedding ring so I guess she is not married to Hunter after all, lol)  You can find out more about her at her website, http://www.sarahaze.com/

At about 8:45, Hunter took the stage.  I have the first release of his debut album, but he mentioned that he re-released it with some new songs as an encore so I was a little bit out of the loop with some of the songs.  But he did a great job at mentioning some of the song titles and I did a great job of guessing the rest – if I do say so myself. (Let’s be honest. I wrote down lyrics and googled them when I got home like I always do)

At one point he asked if it was ok that they jam a little bit – and I knew that they were going into a Justin Timberlake riff and sure enough, Hunter started singing What Goes Around.  Later, he did Wanted (and it wasn’t at the end of the show) and I debated leaving because… that’s why I was there.  I am obsessed with the song and hands down if anyone can write a song for me equal to or better than Wanted I will marry them that second. (seriously.) Fortunately I decided to stick it out because the next song he did was a cover of Maroon 5’s This Love!

Funny Maroon 5 story. I may have mentioned this before but here it goes again because it all came full circle, kind of,  Saturday night. (Though I’ll probably still continue to talk about it so I’m not even going to promise to never bring it up again.)  Back in late 2002, I went to see 2 relative unknowns perform at the same venue Hunter headlined.  John Mayer and Maroon 5 was opening.  Totally fell in love with the lead singer of Maroon 5 during the set. Totally.  After the show, the guy we had gone with comes out of the bathroom and goes “That guy from the opening act you like is in the men’s room – go in and say hi to him!”  We didn’t want to go in the Men’s room so we passed (knowing what I know NOW I’d have at least waited outside to say hi!) and I kick myself for not following through on that opportunity constantly.  Anyway, that men’s room has since been converted into a women’s room and I used it on Saturday (for the first time ever though I think it’s been converted for a while now) and sure enough – Adam Levine was in there – in poster form – advertising the show at the Meadows I can’t go to.  So, anyway, I got a kick out of that… and then when Hunter did This Love – which I believe was the Maroon 5 song that they had John Mayer come out and play on (I’d never seen a headliner join the opener before) it just seemed to be a somewhat full circle moment. (Will totally come full circle for real when I eventually do end up meeting Adam Levine – whether it be in a men’s room or otherwise)

Now that I’ve written more about Maroon 5 than Hunter… I was very surprised that his set went for so long and with very little breaks.  There was a couple of minutes before he came out for the encore but prior to that the kid just goes and goes! And he has so much energy and so many different guitars…

When I was leaving there was a guy behind me talking with his girlfriend (I assume) and he said how he didn’t know what he was getting into at first, but he enjoyed it and was surprised that he played for as long as he did.  Of course the girlfriend was all “What did you think you were going to hate it and he wasn’t going to put on a good show?” and he was like “no.. but…” and I ended up in another position in the crowd so I’m not sure what he ended up saying to that – but I mean, I felt the same way.  I obviously fell in love with him after seeing him open for Carrie Underwood – but did not expect what he did for the full show.

Book Review: Rocking The Wall

Rocking The Wall is a book devoted to essentially, one Bruce Springsteen show that took place in East Berlin on my 4th birthday – July 19, 1988.  This was a big deal because it was about a year and a half before the Berlin wall came down.  Part European history, part Rock N Roll history – Rocking the Wall is certainly an interesting read.  While I obviously was alive while this was going on, I don’t really remember much of this conflict and I have to say, if history class put a bit more of a rock n roll spin on it, I probably would have paid more attention.

The book (hard cover, at least) contains color photos at the end of each of the chapters of ticket stubs, concert posters, signs, etc.  As always – this really helps tell the story and I love when they are included.  I also love when they’re mixed in the book and not just an extra section in the middle of a chapter in the middle of a book.

Certainly an interesting read and I would recommend it to history buffs and Bruce fans alike.

I received a free e-copy of this book in order to write this review. I was not otherwise compensated.

About the Book

Rocking the Wall explores the epic Bruce Springsteen concert in East Berlin on July 19, 1988, and how it changed the world. Erik Kirschbaum spoke to scores of fans and concert organizers on both sides of the Berlin Wall, including Jon Landau, Springsteen’s long-time friend and manager and he unearths lively behind-the-scenes details from eyewitness accounts, newspaper clippings, TV recordings, and even Stasi files, as well as photos and memorabilia. This book transports you back in the middle of those times shortly before the Berlin Wall fell and gives you a front-row spot at one of the biggest and most exciting rock concerts ever, anywhere. It takes you to a journey with Springsteen through the divided city, to his hotel, and his dressing room at the open air concert grounds in Weissensee, where The Boss, live on stage, delivered a courageous speech against the Wall to a record-breaking crowd of more than 300,000 delirious young East Germans. Their tremendous, powerful cry for freedom became the “final nail in the coffin” of the Communist regime and subsequently helped fuel the uprising that brought down the Wall.
