Book Review: Eric Clapton FAQ

When I first saw the title of this book, I thought it would just be a compiled list of “Frequently Asked Questions” about Eric Clapton.  It is not.  It is written in the typical biography format, but is attempting to be a book of facts.  The book does go in to great detail about many of the aspects of Eric’s life and his influences as well, so I am not exactly sure why it tries to write itself off as something that I didn’t really think it was. (It isn’t written as a definitive Clapton biography or tell all book – but it is right on par with many other musical artist biographies that I have read.)

If you ignore the semantics of what the book is trying to be and just take it for what it is, it is full of some great information about Eric Clapton and others that are related to Eric’s career in some way, shape or form.  I especially liked the photos of the records,  concert posters and tickets  – In 1969 a ticket to see Blind Faith was $4.50 in advance and $5 at the door!   They also played MSG at that tour and I don’t think you can even get a soda that cheap there these days! 😉

I found the book to be quite interesting and an easy read. I received a free e-copy of this book from the publisher in order to write this review, I was not otherwise compensated.

About the Book

Eric Clapton has been a rock god for half a century. From busking on street corners and in local pubs to the raw blues of the Yardbirds, the rock/blues fusion of Cream, the guitar brilliance of Derek and the Dominoes, and the unforgettable songs of his solo career, he has proven his incomparable talent in the music world.

His enduring presence has made him the subject of countless books, articles, reviews, websites, and gossip. Is there really anything new to learn about the man they call Slowhand?

Eric Clapton FAQ combines the obvious, the well-known, the obscure, and the unknown into one place. It was not written as a definitive Clapton biography or a tell-all book that has the final say. It is, as the title suggests, a book of facts.

Clapton is one of those public figures we know much about, but he still seems to be partially shrouded in mystery. Sometimes the stories and facts about his life change and evolve, which is all a part of his mystique. Eric Clapton FAQ uncovers some of that mystery and celebrates his talent in an entertaining style. Packed with dozens of rare images, this book is must for Slowhand fans.

TwentyTwo

TwentyTwo is a community for artists and fans to share short audio clips. Artists can post clips to their followers and fans can send clips back.

It’s a more personal and creative way to connect with the artists you love.

The app was developed by Robert Schwartzman, front man of Rooney (and a great solo artist as well)

A little bit about the app from Robert:

“We released the app a few months ago and are constantly building out new features. We’re also actively letting artists and fans know that it’s a place to connect and build a following. You can also share posts to Twitter and Facebook.

We’re excited about this app because it’s a more personal and creative way to connect with fans, and vice versa.  It’s more and more common that musicians, artists, or personalities have other people representing him/her/them online…in other words, you’re not actually connecting with the actual artist.  On 22, it’s all audio updates, so artists have to be involved and willing to engage with fans.  What’s cool is that every artist does different types of audio posts, so it’s whatever you choose to make it.

I’m very excited about the response we’re getting so far from users.”

Right now the 22 app is only available for iPhones, but they are looking to bring it to more platforms in the future.  I am not so patiently awaiting it becoming available for Android!  This sounds like a really awesome idea and social media is HUGE for bands with promotion these days and this is a very unique and fun way for bands to interact with their fans – they can give audio updates, snippets of new songs they are working on, or really whatever they want.  If you are a fan – download the app, check it out – and most importantly – let all your favorite artists know about it and encourage them to use it!

After 7 years, Justin Timberlake has come out with another solo album.  It is crazy to think that it has been that long since he’s been doing music.  Or that it’s been that long since I’ve been boycotting his acting career in hopes that he would go back to music.  My theory was, if he went back to music then perhaps that would lead to an *N Sync reunion, which is what I’m waiting for.  I am not really sure if this means we are one step closer to that or not, but I guess we’ll see.

The first single – Suit & Tie came out while I was in Jamaica and all I was hearing on social media was that it stunk, no one really liked it, but then after a few days they were all saying it grew on them.  For me, it never grew on me.  For the week leading up to the release, Justin was on Jimmy Fallon’s show as part of “Timberweek”.  Every night that week I had an internal battle with myself – after going for so long “hating” him – did I really like him or not?  I’m really not sure of the answer.

But I can tell you that overall, I’m not digging this album.  On their own, each song is unique and most are ok (there are a couple I really like) but together it just doesn’t seem like the album flows or that it is cohesive.  With a second edition of the album coming out later this year, I’m not sure what to expect. Is this part just an experiment and the other part will make more sense? Or was everything done all at once and I won’t “get” any of it?

I am definitely in the minority though because the album sold phenomenally well in the first week and most of my friends can’t get enough of it.  Maybe I’ll care about Justin again if he has 4 guys behind him – and NOT the barber shop quartet that he had with him on Fallon’s show – you know who I mean.  JC, Joey, Chris and Lance.  (Oh, and the fact that he’s playing Yankee Stadium ON MY BIRTHDAY with Jay-Z and not JC isn’t helping matters.)

Product Review: Star Wars Jedi Robe

Halloween and October may be months away, but I think it’s never too soon to start thinking about potential Halloween costumes! (And you never know when you’ll need a costume for some other reason – you’re making a movie or who knows what else might pop up!)  And now that Disney has bought Star Wars and there is potential of a Star Wars Park opening (that’s the rumor, anyway) I figured that I needed to be prepared!  Thanks to costumediscounters and their Jedi Costumes I am now prepared to start my journey in becoming a Jedi.

In addition to Jedi Robes they have tons of other great Star Wars costumes for kids of all ages! (That means kids and adults, of course.)  The kids costumes are freaking adorable and I had a kid they would totally be wearing Yoda and/or  Obi Wan costumes any chance I got.  There are many sizes available – the robe I picked out is “Standard” which means one size fits all and I would say this is true as practically everyone in my family tried it out to see how they looked!  The prices on the site are also incredibly affordable and I will definitely be checking them out in the future when I need to get a costume!

I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

Product Review: Garnier Fructis Triple Nutrition

Recently I got the chance to try out the Garnier Fructis Triple Nutrition Miracle Dry Oil.  This product is unique in that it can be used for your hair, body and/or face.  Not only does Triple Nutrition Miracle Dry Oil leave you with silky hair, a hydrated face and supple skin, but it saves you time, money and energy.

  • Blends weightless olive, avocado and shea oils to transform dry hair and skin with one miracle product.
  • Made for everyday use on hair, body and face
  • Instantly absorbs in a touch with no oily residue
  • Can be used on damp or dry hair
  • Available for a suggested price of $5.99 at grovery and drug stores and mass retailers like Target and Walmart
Ooh-la-la olive oil
Olive oil moisturizes, protects and replenishes your dry hair, improving its strength and elasticity. Your face and body benefit from antioxidants that help protect against skin damage.
Avocado oil gives that glow
Loaded with Vitamin E, avocado oil protects against dryness while locking in color and moisture to keep your hair looking radiant and silky soft. The oil’s natural hydrating abilities promote soft and supple skin, too.
Shine-boosting shea oil
Known for having unique healing properties, shea oil rejuvenates damaged hair and leaves it with a healthy shine. It’s also a great moisturizer that helps improve elasticity in skin.

I liked the idea that this product was multi use – I was happy with the results I got from using the product on my face and skin, but was not as happy with the result when I put it in my hair. For your face it is recommended that you spray it on your hands and rub it in to your face, which is what I did.  My hands did end up a little bit oily, probably because there was too much on them to really absorb it once the application was done with, but that didn’t really bother me too much.  For use in your hair, it is recommended to spray it.  After using the oils on my hands, I had a lot of trouble gripping the bottle and after I sprayed it, it left an oily residue all over the bathroom counter and my mirror.  I thought it might go away, but it was still there the next morning and needed to be cleaned up.

As a bzzagent I got this product for free to try it out and to say what I thought about it. I was not otherwise compensated.

Idol Top 7

The theme is ROCK – No Ballads! Hooray! (I swear earlier in the week it was CLASSIC rock but since Evanescence is included… not sure they’re really a classic)  Another week of half-assed write ups because I am just not feeling this season and my thoughts are always completely different from the judges – I think we’re on a different planet quite often this season.  I think that the girls don’t sound in sync and Randy says they sounded like a group right after.  Say what?

The past 2 weeks everyone has gotten confused in the beginning – kind of strange.

Burnell – You Give Love a Bad Name – No hand movements and a fun performance! I love no ballads week!

Angie & Lazaro – Crazy Little Thing Called Love – Did Lazaro flub on the words – AGAIN?  Other than that it was a nice performance.

Kree – Piece of My Heart – AMAZING! perfect song choice!!

Candice & Burnell – The Letter – Pretty good performance

Janelle – You May Be Right – Wow. That was beyond bad. You can’t make Billy Joel COUNTRY!

Lazaro – We Are The Champions – Not the best but a decent performance from him

Amber, Janelle, Kree – Still Rock N Roll To Me – WHY COUNTRY WHY

Candice – Satisfaction – awesome

Amber – What About Love – Strong performance!

Angie – Bring Me To Life – Great way to end the show

Bottom 3 – Janelle, Burnell, Lazaro
Going home – Lazaro

Results show – Casey James and Carrie Underwood! Woo hoo!

Lazaro in the TOP THREE! Holy cow.

The bottom 3 is Amber, Janelle and Burnell

and Amber is safe!

Janelle and Burnell are the bottom 2.

Burnell sings for his life

The judges decide to not use the safe and Lazaro is the last man standing!

I probably would have used the save on him.

Book Review: Patrick Patron Saint of Ireland

Well, I was hoping that I’d be approved for this book before St Patrick’s day, but unfortunately I wasn’t.  I often find myself wondering just who exactly is St. Patrick and why is he so great that he gets his own day that EVERYONE seemingly celebrates – not only those who are Irish.  This book is by Tomie dePaola who actually also wrote one of my favorite books as a kid, Strega Nona.

The book is only 39 pages, and some of them don’t even have any text, they are just some wonderful illustrations – but that was really all that it took to tell the story of Patrick and why he is now a St. and why he was such a big deal that he deserves to have his own day and lots of parties and green things to celebrate.  (March 17 is significant because it was the day that he died.)

The end of the book also discusses some legends that are related to Patrick – that may or may not be true.  The one that I had heard before was about the snakes, but there were a couple other interesting ones listed that were new to me!

I received a free e-copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley in order to write this review. I was not otherwise compensated.

About the Book

The story of Patrick’s life, from his noble birth in Britain, to his being captured and taken to Ireland by a group of bandits, to the “dreams” that led him to convert the Irish people to the Christian faith. DePaola also retells several well-known legends, including the story of how Patrick got rid of all the snakes in Ireland. Full color.

Book Review:The Girl Guide

The Girl Guide: Finding Your Place in a Mixed-Up World is a great book for young girls who are dealing with adolescence, peer pressure and everything else wild and crazy that comes with growing up. The book is geared towards middle school aged girls and is incredibly interactive.  It is split up into multiple parts and each chapter has activities, worksheets, quizzes, etc for the reader to fill out to really help bring home the topics that are being discussed.  They are encouraged to make gratitude journals to try and focus on the positive and other activities like that which I think are great.  I think a lot of girls are embarrassed to talk to their parents about things like this and this book can help them pinpoint maybe exactly what they may be struggling with to then talk to their parents or maybe a counselor at school if that my be who they are more comfortable with.

The book is broken up in to parts – The Journey Begins which contains 3 chapters, It’s All About Connections which contains 3 chapters, “I Think I Can” – The Power of Belief which also has 3 chapters, Finding Emotional Balance with 3 chapters and finally, Putting it All Into Practice which has 5 chapters.  Each part has the activities which I had mentioned above as well as some great advice to girls who may be struggling with all the changes going on to not only them, but those around them as well.

There is also a section which is called “Recommended Resources” in case the reader would like to find some additional material to read to help them out with what they may be struggling in.  Overall, I found this book to be really well thought out and incredibly interactive, which I think is a huge plus.  I wish there was something like this around when I was struggling with middle school and bullies and all that fun stuff!

I received a free e-copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley in order to write this review. I was not otherwise compensated.

Book Review: Tim Tebow

If you have paid even a little bit of attention to football, you have probably heard of Tim Tebow.  Or if you pay attention to social media and things that go viral, you’ve probably heard of “Tebowing”.  Tim Tebow: Quarterback with Conviction is an indepth biography on Tim Tebow.  I pay only a little attention to football (but a lot of attention to social media) so I did know who Tim was, but didn’t know too much about him other than the fact that he is pretty religious and is now playing in Jersey for the Jets.

Since this bio is done by USA Today, there are some articles included in with the story and all of the pages look like they came from a newspaper or magazine (which you know I love.)  I learned a lot about Tim – like how he struggled with dyslexia as a kid and had to learn things differently and that while he grew up in Florida, he was actually born in the Philippines!

The biography chronicles his football teams throughout his life, growing up, college, and then on to the pros.

If you are a football fan, sports fan, Tebow fan or just are looking for something to read… check out Tim Tebow from USA Today Lifeline Biographies.

I received a free e-copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley in order to write this review. I was not otherwise compensated.

About the Book

“Tim Tebow is a one-man cultural blitz,” reports USA TODAY, The Nation’s No. 1 Newspaper. A celebrity in the football world and a pop culture phenomenon, Tebow has become a household name. He both “polarizes and mesmerizes” fans with his “unconventional playing style and outspoken commitment to his Christian faith.”

For twenty years, Tebow was told that he didn’t fit the quarterback mold. But fierce determination and an intense will to win earned him the coveted Heisman Trophy as a sophomore in college and a hard-won spot as a quarterback in the NFL. In a short time, Tebow has become a role model for millions of kids. Follow his rise to the NFL ranks in this exciting biography, and you’ll find out why Tebowmania is sweeping the nation.
