Book Review: Deadly Offer

I typically try and avoid books with Vampires in them, but since I had enjoyed Caroline B Cooney’s “Wanted!” so much, I decided I would give this one a try since it was also by her.  The book is about Althea, a high school girl who lives in a house that many think is haunted.  While there aren’t any ghosts, there is a vampire in the tower in the attic that she accidentally sets free.  Althea sits alone at lunch and the other kids at school don’t pay much attention to her.  She’d love to be popular and be a cheerleader and the vampire promises that he can make this happen for her.  There’s only one problem – in order for her to be popular she has to bring him victims.

Althea loves her new found popularity – she has a boyfriend – a football player boyfriend at that and she has made the cheerleading squad after Celeste had to quit due to being too tired and weak to be on the squad anymore. (I wonder how THAT happened?)  She is loving it, but the vampire keeps demanding more and more from Althea in order to keep her popularity going.  Althea doesn’t want to meet his demands any more and just like that he is able to take it all away.  Her car won’t start and after walking to school everyone acts like she doesn’t exist again.  Althea wants it all back and she thinks that she is willing to bring more victims to the vampire – but will she have a change of heart?  Is losing her new friends to the vampire worth the popularity and cheerleading and boys?  She has to figure out a way to keep her popularity and get rid of the vampire once and for all.

This was a quick read, but a good read, despite the fact that I am not a vampire fan.  It is also the first book in a series of 3, and I am looking forward to seeing what happens in the next books and whether it will follow the vampire, Althea or have completely new characters…

About the Book

Althea’s dreams are about to become her nightmares
Althea has always been a sweet, kind girl. In middle school, she had a group of friends to hang out with. She was on the softball team, took gymnastics, and won ribbons for horseback riding. But high school is horrible for Althea. She doesn’t make the cheerleading squad. Her group of friends splits apart to form new cliques, and Althea is left to sit alone at lunch. That is, until she discovers a vampire living in the attic tower of her family home. A vampire who can make her dreams come true: a spot on the cheerleading squad; popularity; a boyfriend. All the vampire wants in return is a small sacrifice, and Althea is in too deep to back out now.The first book in Caroline B. Cooney’s Vampire’s Promise trilogy reveals the danger behind the door of the Shuttered Room . . .This ebook features an illustrated biography of Caroline B. Cooney including rare images and never-before-seen documents from the author’s personal collection.

Book Review: Strike Three You’re Dead

Strike Three Your Dead is about the Providence Jewels, a baseball team that play in Providence Rhode Island.  Harvey Blissberg, the center fielder, discovers one of his teammates, Rudy Furth, a relief pitcher, dead in the whirlpool tub in the club house.  Harvey spent his nights on the road in hotels with Rudy as they were roommates.  He has no idea who would want to do this to him, but since he found him he becomes a suspect – as does the entire rest of the team.

Harvey doesn’t seem to be too impressed with the job that the cops are doing in tracking down Rudy’s killer, so he takes matters into his own hands.  He goes to Rudy’s apartment and finds out all sorts of things he never knew about the guy.  Slowly the story starts unfolding and he thinks that he may be on to something.  Finally, his brother says something to him that triggers Harvey’s brain to figure out exactly what was going down.  Except that the person who killed Harvey has been hot on HIS trail following him around and knew how close he was to figuring things out.

Can Harvey put all the pieces together and let the cops know before the killer catches up with him? He’s already had 2 strikes against him – a dead rat in his locker and a note in his glove to stop playing private eye.  And you know what they say.  Strike Three, You’re Dead.

This was a great book – I love murder mysteries and to throw in baseball and the team as an additional set of characters was great because you really had no idea who on the team it could be or even if it was any of the guys on the team.  They all could have had their own reason’s for not liking Rudy.  I never really had an idea of who did it until closer to the end of the book and pretty much figured it all out as Harvey was figuring it all out.

About the Book

A slugger struggles with an empty ballpark and a murdered teammate

The Providence Jewels, an American League expansion team, have been taking a beating all season. Worse, relief pitcher Rudy Furth has just suffered a beating of a more lethal kind—and been left to die in the clubhouse whirlpool among whispers of mob corruption and violently lovesick fans.

When the police investigation stalls, veteran Providence center fielder Harvey Blissberg, who knew Furth as well as anyone, decides to play detective. While trying to keep his eye on the ball, and his head above water with the spunky, beautiful sports newscaster Mickey Slavin, Blissberg quietly stalks Furth’s killer through major-league locker rooms and the dark streets of Rhode Island’s capital city. Lots of ballplayers keep their batting averages above .300—but how many have chased a murderer at the same time?

Product Review: MailPix Prints & Enlargements

Recently I was contacted by MailPix and asked to try out their services on 4×6 prints and a photo enlargement.  I jumped at the chance because my “To Print” folder on my desktop was getting to be a bit out of hand and I am always in the market for new photo printing sites to try out to see who has great quality photos for my scrapbook!  I was also excited because I had been wanting to get my meet and greet photo with The Wanted printed and I knew that something more than my typical 5×7 was needed because, well, it’s the best meet and greet photo of all time (if I do say so myself)!  I opted to get a 12×18 of the photo (though the thought of getting it poster sized did cross my mind) but they also offer 11×14 photos if you’re looking for something just a bit bigger than the typical 8×10/8×12 enlargements.

I put it in this too big frame so it would be flat (came shipped in a tube) so ignore the strange reflection of my belt and shoe insert and who knows what else it picked up on.

To order the prints it was super simple.  I did have to install Microsoft Silverlight which is basically just a program to enhance your web experience (You may even already have it, but since my computer is new I didn’t).  That downloaded really quickly. Then I created a new collection and hit “Upload Photos”. For the photos I was going to order as 4×6 I used the express upload and they were uploaded incredibly fast.  In less than 5 minutes, I think (but I wasn’t timing it).  This was impressive because sometimes I feel like I spend hours waiting for the photos to upload to other printing websites. For the one I was getting enlarged I used the Large Upload button which is recommended for posters and gifts.  (There is also a in the middle option – Fast Upload for prints up to 8×12).  Once everything is uploaded they all show up on the screen and then on the right is a list of all the different print sizes and prices with a – and + button so you can select what print size you want. (I also want to note that they have 5×5, 8×8 and 12×2 prints for Instagram photos! Which I definitely will be checking out soon because sometimes I really want to put an instagram photo in the scrapbook but I’ve yet to find a place to print them!)

4x6s sorted by show waiting to be organized until I have time to scrap them!

Once you are ready to check out they have 2 print options – Full Bleed (Cropped) or Fit To Page (Not Cropped).  There is a green box around all of the photos so that you can crop them how you want and make sure that everyone’s heads are in the frame and all that good stuff 🙂 This is a definite plus because many other sites don’t let you do that and they decide how they want to crop them and this always leaves me annoyed because someones head is ALWAYS cut off.  (I have a tendency of getting carried away with my zoom button at times which leads to this problem) I’m glad that I can make sure that won’t happen on MailPix!

I placed the order on Tuesday night and I had them by the following Monday! I was a little bit concerned about the 4x6s because they uploaded so quickly.  I thought they may end up pixelated or grainy.  But they look amazing!  No visible difference between MailPix’s super fast uploading and the competitors uploading that takes forever and a day.  I am very particular about my digital photo printing since they all go in my scrapbook and I was impressed and they certainly pass my test and I will have no problem sticking them in my upcoming scrapbook layouts. I even got a 4×6 print a friend took of me and Mark from Action Item on her iPhone and it looks great as well.

Two big thumbs up and a recommendation for you to check out MailPix for sure!
I received 50 free 4×6 prints and a photo enlargement of my choice for free in order to do this review. I was not otherwise compensated and all thoughts and opinions in this review are 100% mine.

Product Review: Speedy Flyer

Lately I’ve been on an android phone app kick, adding all sorts of new and fun games to my phone to keep myself busy when I am bored (or, more accurately, up all night playing silly games when I should be asleep!)  The latest app that I have downloaded is called “Speedy Flyer” and I must say that  I am really, really bad at it!

About the game:

Behold our new creation – funny game Speedy Flyer! Ideal mix of entertainment and reaction test. Game is running around two naughty worms with jetpacks flying headlong through the Universe to infinity and beyond. The goal of their crazy journey is known by nobody but them. But it’s not important for you because your task is to help brave worms to overcome their way.

Since first minutes of the game you will see that despite of simple one-tap gameplay it’s not so easy to become a master. If you’re looking for a good game that will improve your reaction skills and occupy your free time – then that’s it! So do you wanna try how many scores you can get and how much time you can overpower these dashing worms? If you are ready then fasten your seat belts and let’s go – Speedy Flyer welcomes you!
This game is really quite challenging and although I’ve been playing it for a few days now, I still can’t seem to get very far!  Practice makes perfect though, so I’ll keep trying!

Check it out for free in the Google Play App Store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.speedy_flyer

I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

Product Review: Schick Hydro Silk

With the Schick Hydro Silk razor, you go beyond an incredibly close shave to actually care for your skin. Only Schick Hydro Silk razors include Water-Activated Moisturizing Serum to hydrate your skin for up to 2 hours after shaving and 5 Curve-Sensing blades with skin guards to help reduce irritation.

Couple that with a soft touch handle and compact oval cartridges that fit the contours of a woman’s body and you can see why the Shick Hydro Silk razor was last year’s most awarded new razor. (Based on 2012 Beauty Awards top magazines.) Make the simple switch to Schick Hydro razor in 2013. (The silky smooth legs will follow, trust us.)

The Schick Hydro Silk is the latest product that I’ve got to try out – for FREE – just for being a bzzangent.  This razor has 5 blades, I don’t think I’ve ever used one with so many blades before.  When I took it out of the package I was a bit intimidated, but once I actually started using it I fell in love!  I did cut myself a couple of times, but that’s pretty typical for me. (Though I don’t know if this was all in my head or not – I don’t think that the cuts bled as much as usual nor did they sting as much as usual. Again, I may just be nuts. Or maybe the razor is that awesome.)  Once I was done I had a great, close shave and my legs were left feeling silky smooth.

Each razor package comes with 2 cartridges, one to use right now and one to save for later.  It also has a shower hook included which makes it super convenient.   It is also available in a disposable version, if that is more your thing.

American Idol 3 night event

Tuesday night we had the girls, Wednesday night the boys and Thursday night the top 10 as voted by America will be announced!  There is a new way to support your favorites this season – you can cast a vote directly from the American Idol vote! With super vote you can allot your 50 votes however you’d like – split amongst multiple contestants or all for 1!  You can vote all at once which will make things super easy (and also give them RECORD BREAKING vote numbers!)

But first – the girls

Zoanette – Whats Love Got To Do With It – Back to not being too amazed with her. Not sure that was Top 10 material.

Breanna – Flaws and All – Great performance from Breanna, though I didn’t like the song. Don’t agree w/ Nicki at all. Probably not a top performance, but shouldn’t be the bottom either, I don’t think. But we’ll see.

Aubrey – Big Girls Dont Cry – Really great performance. Great song choice.

Janelle – If I Can Dream – Not sure I really liked this performance.

Tenna – Lost – I’m kind of torn on this performance. She sounded good but I couldn’t understand a damn thing she was singing.

Angie – Never Gone – She loses major points for singing a Colton song because I think he is ridiculous – but she did a good job.

Amber – I Believe In You and Me – Never a good idea to take on Whitney but she did pretty good with it.

Kree – Stronger – Kree is pretty good and the judges love her so I think she’ll have no problem making it to the top 10 though im not really sure if I like her or not.

Adriana – Stand Up For Love – I hate to say this, but I agree with Nicki.  She kind of lost herself a bit and I just didn’t feel it.

Candice – Ordinary People – Another great performance from Candice!

These are my picks but it was NOT easy and im probably so wrong… like the judges say there is a good group here and I wouldn’t be surprised if there is some twist related to the Top 10 being more than 10 up the producers sleeves…

Home – Zoanette, Janelle, Adrianna, Tenna, Breanna
Top 10 – Aubrey, Angie, Amber, Kree, Candice

Elijah – Stay – Not impressed. I dont think it was the right song choice.

Cortez – Locked Out Of Heaven – I want to like him but he always seems to be right on the cusp of greatness and misses it.

Charlie – Mama – So, so bad. So bad. Did I mention it was bad?

Nick – Iris – Considering the epic fail of everyone ahead of him so far, this may be enough to get him through but I didnt really dig it.

Burnell – I’m Here – Best of the night so far but his arms are still really distracting.

Paul – Just a Fool – He’s still theatrical but it wasn’t bad. He could make it to the top 10.

Lazaro – Feeling Good – looooooooove him. cant get over just how amazing he sings and the transformation that singing does to him

Curtis – I Believe I Can Fly – Another great performance.

Devin – It’s Impossible – Can’t get over the elimination that got him through so please go home. 😉 (At least he didn’t totally suck because I think then I’d have been more annoyed)

Vincent  – End Of The Road – I wasn’t entirely blown away but it but it wasn’t bad either

My picks… I tried to be objective.

Home –  Cortez, Elijah, Charlie, Paul, Vincent
Top 10 –  Nick, Burnell, Lazaro, Curtis, Devin

And now we find out who america voted as the top 10 in a SUPERSIZED episode of American Idol!

5 guys and 5 girls will make it to the Top 10.  And right now no one knows who is going through except Ryan.

1st to top 10 – Paul

2nd through- Burnell

3rd through – Curtis

4th through – Devin

And the last of the guys – Lazaro!

Which puts me at 4/5 for the guys!

And now for the girls…

1st in the top 10 – Janelle

2nd – Candice

3rd – Angie

4th – Amber

5th – Kree!

And 4/5 for the girls.  Hmm. Seem to have been stuck at that number through almost all the rounds!

Book Review: Gold Dust

Gold Dust is about a 7th grader named Richard who LOVES baseball.  When a new student, Napoleon, comes to the school, Richard takes him under his wing and tries to get him interested in baseball too.  Napoleon would much rather play cricket, but the more he plays with Richard the more they realize that he is a natural.

The book takes place in 1975 and Richard is obsessed with Fred Lynn and Jim Rice – the Gold Dust twins.  He is convinced that him and Napoleon can become the next Gold Dust twins (but they’ll probably need a different name then.)

For a while, Napoleon goes along with the baseball dream, but slowly he begins to realize that he may have some dreams of his own.  Then what does he do? And what does Richard do?

This is a relatively short Young Adult book that I think a lot of boys (and girls too!) would enjoy.  Richard loves the Red Sox but I think that any kid interested in baseball would enjoy reading it and it gives some great life lessons as well.

I received a free e-copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley in order to write this review I was not otherwise compensated.

About the Book

Baseball-loving seventh grader Richard has hopes of turning himself and the new kid, Napoleon, into the best baseball players Boston has seen since the Gold Dust Twins

“As long as you have baseball on your side you can overcome anything.” Seventh grader Richard Moncreif is convinced baseball will ease newcomer Napoleon Charlie Ellis’s transition to life in Boston. Napoleon is unlike anyone he’s ever met: poised, well educated, and a cricket player from the Caribbean. Napoleon is one of the few black students at Richard’s school, where racism is pervasive. But Richard believes that he and Napoleon can get through any hardship and become the next Gold Dust Twins, just like the famous pair of Red Sox rookies from 1975. After all, Napoleon is a natural athlete, and Richard knows everything anyone could possibly know about baseball. He just needs Napoleon to play along.

Book Review: Liam Hemsworth

Liam Hemsworth is one of the hottest actors out there right now and he is engaged to singer/actress Miley Cyrus.  In this 36 page book, find out all there is to know about this hollywood hottie!

I’ll be honest, before reading this book I didn’t know much about Liam other than that he was in The Last Song with Miley and was also in the blockbuster hit the Hunger Games.

I liked the layout of the book with all the photos throughout and it was almost done up like a scrapbook (which of course is always my favorite way to have a book laid out) and at the end there is a section devoted to only pics of Liam!

If you are a fan or are just looking to find out more about him, definitely check out this book!

I received a free e-copy of this book from the publisher in order to write this review. I was not otherwise compensated.

Check out Sonali!

Back to steal the spotlight, fresh-faced pop/rock singer and songwriterSonali is set to release her brand new single “Nothing Left,” available now on iTunes. As a follow-up to her debut EP “Speechless,” the single is a testament to Sonali’s star quality. With still so much to offer, this radiant performer is wowing crowds and rocking stages to show the world what she’s really made of.

Hailing from South Florida, Sonali grew up around music and always knew that was where her heart laid. Humming before she could speak, Sonali was so inspired by music that she began to pen her own songs before she could even write. The young rocker’s family is a major support system and is constantly encouraging her to develop her natural skills. Multi-talented beyond expectations, Sonali displays effortless expertise on the guitar, keyboard, drums and bass. In addition to singing and writing, the Florida native is dedicated to expanding her knowledge in her field and has attended multiple music programs including one at the prestigious New York University, where she is currently enrolled in the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music Program at Tisch School of the Arts. Between studying and recording, Sonali adds philanthropist to her list of occupations and is donating 100% of the proceeds from Speechless to Smile Train, a charity committed to providing free cleft surgery to poor children in developing countries.

Equipped with a big heart and wisdom beyond her chronological age, the shining singer evokes honesty in her lyrics and emotion in her voice that separates her music from the average pop tune. Written by the singer, “Nothing Left” truly speaks to Sonali’s evolution as a writer and maturity. “Since I have drawn influences from contemporary pop, rock, and R&B, ‘Nothing Left’ really

displays my versatility as an artist. Although it appears otherwise at a first glance, it is actually not just another cliché break-up song, but actually one of lost friendship. I can’t wait to hear what everyone has to say about it,” Sonali expressed.

Produced by Adam Piccoli and David Adams and mixed by Derek Olds, the song tells a story that almost anyone who has been in a relationship can relate to; regretting dating the last ex, freeing yourself from a bad relationship and discovering inner strength. The singer’s sparkling voice soars over major piano chords, infectious guitar licks and enticing drum beats. Sonali’s fingerprints are all over this track being that she wrote, sang lead and background and played the lead guitar on it. This is also the first time she’s recorded her chops on the keyboard.

With a knack for bouncy melodies and lyrics that hit home, Sonali is getting closer to stardom with each song. Rapidly growing as a performer while stunning crowds with her charm, fans of her upbeat and edgy style are sure to stay on this train. For more information on Sonali, please visitwww.itsmesonali.com.

I’m really digging Sonali’s song “Nothing Left”, it’s pretty catch!  What do you think?
