American Idol Top 9

This week the Top 9 Idols will take on the songs of The Beatles.  But first we need to find out who is going on the tour! And it is – Aubrey! Hooray! No more Charlie! Throughout the night we found out what song was Keith’s favorite Beatle song – in fact, he seems to have at least 4 Beatles songs in his top 2!

Kree – With a Little Help From My Friends – Great performance to kick off the night.

Burnell – Let It Be – Kind of shocked that he didn’t know this song! But he got it all figured out and another great performance.

Amber – She’s Leaving Home – I feel like she was pitchy and off key at points, but it was still a pretty good performance.

Lazaro – In My Life – He seemed to start off a little too fast but found his way about midway through. But what the heck do they have him wearing? Yellow jacket and red shoes?

Candice – Come Together – I knew she was going to do this and I knew she would rock it! Awesome!

Paul – Eleanor Rigby – Very boring rendition. Oh – wait – now we get an Adam Lambert scream.  No thanks.

Angie – Yesterday – A little too big at moments, but still a pretty good performance

Devin – The Long and Winding Road – Probably a perfect song for him.

Janelle – I Will – I find it funny that Paul didn’t want to make the song sound country – but Janelle didn’t seem to have a problem with it. I do though. Gross.

Picking the bottom 3 is so hard because I have to put my personal feelings aside and try to think what America is thinking. And sometimes America is nutty.

Bottom 3 – Paul, Devin, Lazaro (as much as it pains me because I l-o-v-e him)

Going home – Paul

Paul gets his own day and then ends up in the bottom 3!

Devin is also in the bottom 3…

Wow. This is making me look like a genius 😉

Oh wait, spoke too soon, Lazaro is safe (YES!)

Kree is moving on to next week

Candice is also safe!

And Angie too. (Surprise surprise with those 3!)

Also safe – Janelle!

Burnell is also safe which leaves Amber in the bottom 3! Wow.

Paul, Devin and Amber are the bottom 3. I don’t think I’d have picked Amber (Janelle would have been my next choice)

Paul will sing for the save! (Right again! Woohoo!)

And Paul does not get saved and he will be leaving the show.

Book Review: Gatwick Bear

Gatwick Bear is the story of a bear who lived at the Gatwick Airport. (Was he named after the airport or the airport after him?)  He is having a grand old time living and playing at the airport – that is until the CCTV system tracks him down and he gets kicked out.

Somehow after getting kicked out of the airport, Gatwick Bear finds himself wrapped up with top secret agents and stolen money and all sorts of fun and dangerous things.

This book is geared for young readers, so each chapter is very short and it is very easy to read.  The story is full of action and adventure so if you have a young reader, I am sure they will enjoy following Gatwick along on all of his adventures. He bumps into a lot of great and interesting characters, some of which stick around longer than others.

What will end up happening? Will he get caught up in all the crime that is going on? Or will he make it back to the airport to continue to hide out? Something else completely? You’ll have to read the book to find out!

I received a free e-copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley in order to write this review. I was not otherwise compensated.

About the Book

I’m nothing like any other bear. First of all, I have an unbearable name. You might have already seen me stomping around the airport named after me. (Or, was I named after the airport?) Whatever! If you’ve never seen me, you need to look around more carefully next time you’re in departures – I might be there! You’ll recognise me because my fur is mega-ruffled at the back and super-tidy at the front. Oh, yes, also I have a navy-blue waistcoat sewn on me like those once worn by old-fashioned bears. Until I was spotted over the CCTV system by security I had quite a boring little life at the airport. But all that changed suddenly when I boarded a plane while being hunted down by the vicious Miss Acid, the Head of Security. And, soon after, I got caught up in the dangerous world of top secret agents.
Will I go back to living the sorry life of poverty at Gatwick Airport, or am I made for grander things? Read my story to find out!

Wheel of Fortune live in NYC!

When I had found out that Wheel of Fortune was coming to NYC, I immediately entered for tickets.  They had 4 days available and you could only select one date/time unless you selected that you had no preference.  Of course, no preference would give you the best odds at getting tickets, so that is what I chose.

We ended up getting 4  tickets for the 2pm Monday afternoon show.  We got there around 1 and the line was already wrapped around the block at Madison Square Garden (the show was being taped at the Theater there) and it was FREEZING and we were supposed to be getting a snow storm that night.

Although doors opened at 2, they started moving us in early, but we were herded like cattle through line after line and finally ended up getting in to our seats at about 3.  Jim Thornton, the announcer for the show, came out to talk to us and even sang a song (since we were so close to Broadway he said he had to).  Then a couple of the local news casters came on stage and talked to us a bit as well.

We were in the front area behind the press, but unfortunately could barely see Vanna and couldn’t see the letter board at all (they had monitors set up though so we could see the puzzles, but most of the time this was blocked by the Jimmy camera – is that what it is called? The one that swings?) but sometimes it was up on the middle screen too so we could see it there.

We weren’t sure how many shows they were going to film.  After the first show, Pat and Vanna came to talk (but Vanna had no mic so she just said hello into Pat’s chest) and then Pat said to hang tight they would be getting changed and coming back for another show!

Vanna ended up coming out and talking to the crowd a bit and answered questions and then it was time for the 2nd show.

After the 2nd show, a lot of people left because the snow was starting and it had been pretty long.  We were told to stay in our seats and that if we stayed for the 3rd show we would get a blinky pin!

Pat came out and went through the crowd shaking hands and said “vote for me, vote for me, I’ll let you drink however much soda you want.” Since that is a big topic in NYC about banning large sodas.  Then he pulled a girl from the audience and took her down to meet Vanna and she got a little box with goodies in it.

And then it was time for the 3rd and final show!  It was Best Friends week and the shows will be airing May 13, 14, and 15.  I can tell you that none of the winners got the bonus round puzzle.  And there were a few rounds where most of the audience knew it, but it went around and around and around and it was SO frustrating to not just shout it out at them.  (If you yell it out and they can hear it, the puzzle gets thrown out and then they have to do a different one, so you really have to be quiet)

Overall, it was a long day but a lot of fun and I am glad that I can cross seeing Wheel of Fortune in person off of my bucket list 😉

Book Review: A Dream So Big

A Dream So Big is told by Steve Peifer about the time that he and his family spent as missionaries in Africa.  They had decided to go after their 3rd son was born, but unfortunately only was able to live for 8 days due to a chromosomal condition.  The Peifers were aware of this condition during wife Nancy’s pregnancy but chose not to abort their son and instead hope for the best and put it into God’s hands.

Steven and Nancy spent a year as dorm parents at a boarding school in Kenya.  Their sons, Matthew and JT went along as well.  It is heartbreaking to hear about the situations that are going on in Kenya and how excited they get to receive what anyone in America would consider “next to nothing”.  There are fees for the children to go to school and most parents can not even afford food for their family (and even then most eat only 1 meal a day) let alone to have any money left over to send their children to school.  Without an education, it will be hard for these children to have many opportunities to advance.

They also visited orphanages and delivered meals to nearby neighborhoods.  The stories they tell make me want to figure out more ways to help. (I sponsor a child in Africa – Sierra Leone – through World Vision).  Their church back home sent them lots of care packages to distribute and then had to deal with bartering with those who had the packages in order to be able to pick them up.  A lot of times they asked for ridiculous amounts of money for the packages and Steve would have to figure out ways to get them to come down in their prices so that the supplies could be used for the children.

After spending a year, it was clear that the family wanted to go back at some point, but Steve had landed a pretty good job and decided to stay in America and work.  He then had a moment in Vegas where he decided that he should be back in Africa and the family decided to go back this time for four years!

While back in Kenya, he and Nancy discussed how he had always wanted a daughter.  They went to the local orphanage to see about finding a daughter and actually found twins – a boy and a girl – that they wanted to adopt.  They started out fostering Katie and Ben and later ended up adopting them – on their son Stephen’s birthday.  They definitely took it as a sign from God that this is what they were supposed to be doing.

Steve also set up a program to get food at schools for a year.  He was able to raise enough money to provide a meal to all the students at several schools and it helped the community greatly.  Kids were able to learn better with full bellies and not crying or about to faint becuase they were so hungry.  He also worked on setting up computer labs at the schools too to help give the kids more skills they could use.

While this book took me forever and a day to read (it is just over 300 pages) I absolutely loved it.  The things that this family has done, though they may seem insignifigant to some, had a HUGE impact over in Kenya and their son may have only lived for 8 days – but the impact that he had on his family’s life is responsible for the impact that they made over in Kenya.  A truly inspiring story.

About the Book

A Dream So Big is the story of Steve Peifer, a corporate manager who once oversaw 9,000 computer software consultants, who today helps provide daily lunches for over 20,000 Kenyan school children in thirty-five national public schools, and maintains solar-powered computer labs at twenty rural African schools. Steve and his wife, Nancy, were enjoying a successful management career with one of America’s high tech corporate giants during the dot-com boom of the 1990’s when, in 1997, he and his wife Nancy discovered they were pregnant with their third child. Tragically, doctors said a chromosomal condition left their baby ‘incompatible with life.’ The Peifers only spent 8 days with baby Stephen before he died. Seeking to flee the pain, Steve and Nancy began a pilgrimage that thrust them into a third-world setting where daily life was often defined by tragedy—drought, disease, poverty, hunger, and death. They didn’t arrive in the service of any divine calling, but the truth of their surroundings spoke to their troubled hearts. A short-term, 12-month mission assignment as dorm parents for a Kenyan boarding school turned this ordinary man into the most unlikely internationally recognized hero, and his story will inspire you to pursue similar lives of service.

Book Review: Born to Blog

Born To Blog is everything that you need to know about starting up a blog, whether it be for personal or business reasons.  Most of the tips in the book I’ve already known about, but there were a few new aspects that I have to think a bit about and see if I can implement them here at ConcertKatie.

If you are looking to start a blog then I definitely recommend you read this book to help figure out what kind of voice you want your blog to have as well as to learn why schedules are important.  I try to stick to a post a day, but a post every weekday may be more your style.

If you are starting a blog for a business – well, I only skimmed over those chapters but I am sure they will be just as helpful as the rest of the book.  I just didn’t need to know anything about business blogs.

If you are stuck with finding content (which has been my problem this month for the first time in a long time!) They have some helpful tips and ways to think up things that you can talk about to your readers.

They also offer pros and cons on the blogging platforms – Blogger, Tumblr (I don’t consider this to be a real blog!) and WordPress.  I use self-hosted WordPress and am more than happy with it – if you have any questions about it feel free to leave me a comment.  I’ve also used Blogger and I use Tumblr but just for reblogging silly internet things, nothing too serious!

Macy’s 2013 Prom Fashion Show

Yesterday afternoon we hit up the Macy’s at West Farms mall for their 2013 Prom fashion show.  No, I haven’t gone back to high school, Action Item was going to be performing at the event. (Makes sense now, right? My prom was 11 years ago!)

We waited in line to make sure that we could get good seats for the fashion show and the performance.  Our “good seats” ended up second row but right next to the underwear! The fashion show was hosted by Mandi Line, who is the stylist for my (current) favorite TV show – Pretty Little Liars!  She was really cool and fun and some of the dresses and shoes she would mention would be something she could see Spencer wearing which put a nice touch on everything.

Then it was time for Action Item.  They did 3 songs – Brave, Marching Band and Bad For You.  During the last song the models came back out to the runway to show off the dresses on last time.

After their set, Mandi was doing a shopping spree with a lucky winner and hanging around for photos.  We opted to just get in line for the Action Item signing, which went pretty quickly.  It was nice to see all the guys again, even if it was really weird for them to be at Christine’s mall – which we go to every now and then (well, Christine is there much more often.)  Although, it would be cooler if the next time there was a show at the mall it was at MY mall 5 minutes from my house. 😉

American Idol Top 10

Wednesday night we got to hear performances from the Top 10!  When the judges were announced Nicki wasn’t there – I got excited and thought maybe she left the show but Ryan said that she was stuck in traffic and would be there later. Boo.

This weeks theme is any song from Idol past winners. Not sure I really dig that theme but let’s see how it goes! (I’m always comparing repeat songs to the last time it was performed and often reference WhatNotToSing.com to make sure I am remembering correctly. This is just going to force me to do that no matter how hard I try not to!)

Curtis – I Believe (Fantasia) – It was going to be tough to match up with Fantasia, but he did re-work it a bit… but it still wasn’t all that great of a performance – he had done much, much better in past rounds. (Though when he said he liked Luther, I would have thought he would have gone with a Ruben song!)

Janelle – Gone (Scotty) – The trouble with this theme is that I can’t help but compare to the other Idol’s performance.  This was a big turning point for Scotty if I remember correctly and this performance just didn’t match Scotty’s at all.

And Nicki is back. Oh hooray. :/

Devin – Temporary Home (Carrie) – Probably the best performance of the night (though that’s not saying much) but I didn’t like it.  I am trying so hard not to compare to Carrie but I can’t!  It just seemed like a boring arrangement.

Angie – I Surrender (Kelly) – I didn’t watch Season 1 so I had nothing to compare with this performance.  She did great, but there is just something about her that I don’t like. But certainly one of the best performances and it will probably be one of the best of the night regardless of who goes behind her.

Paul – Amazed (Scotty) – Well, he isn’t over singing like a Broadway star anymore, so that’s good… but it just seemed like it was hurting him to sing that way.  Not a bad performance but hopefully he can find a happy medium between the two.

Candice – I Who Have Nothing (Jordin) – Totally called this one during the commercial break – Jordin did AMAZING with this song. And I think Candice did great too. Maybe not as great as Jordin but damn near close! WOW! WOW! WOW!

Lazaro – Breakaway (Kelly) – There was something off about the performance with his singing and the music – he was going too fast or something, I’m not sure. Not the worst of the night but not his best performance either.

Kree – Crying (Carrie) – Another strong performance from Kree. There’s not much else for me to say lol

Burnell – Flying Without Wings (Ruben) – He seemed to tone down on the hand movements a bit, which was good for me because they are so distracting for me!  I’m not sure I loved this song for him, but it was a decent performance.

Amber – A Moment Like This (Kelly) – I liked how she made the song her own and it was a really great performance. (Though I don’t think it is the best of the night like Nicki did)

My Bottom 3  – Janelle, Paul and Curtis with Curtis going home

Ryan tells us that they will let us know who was the Top 3 but not in which order. (Gotta compete with XFactor?)

The first in our top 3 is Candice with 42% of the vote in SC.

Kree gets the key to the city in TX where she grew up and then finds out that she is in the top 3!

We find out Charlie was the #6 guy and performs for a spot on the Idol Tour (Based on my 4/5 I thought it would have been Nick…)

And the girl is Aubrey – who was who I thought would make it last week.

The last to make the Top 3 is Angie.

4th. Lazaro
5th Amber
6th Janelle
7th Burnell
8th Paul

The bottom 2 are Devin and Curtis (So I was 2/3 on the bottom 3, kind of shocked Devin is there!)

Singing for the save is – Curtis

And they don’t save him and I am 1 for 1 for the season!

Book Review: Hank Greenberg

Hank Greenberg was a baseball player in the 1930s.  He was also Jewish.  The Hero of Heroes starts out with Hank sitting in the locker room on September 10, 1934.  Rosh Hoshanah.  By tradition, Jews should observe the holiday in prayer and not work or play.  Hank spent the morning at his synagogue and then stood up to leave.  Should he go and play?  He did not play the year before, his rookie year and no one noticed.  This year he was am emerging star and the Tigers were in first place – fighting the Yankees for the pennant.  The Detroit dailies were giving updates on his every move – was he home? At the synagogue  On his way to the ballpark? Everyone knew thanks to the dailies.  Hank didn’t like all the attention, he wanted to be private but the way he was playing and the position his team was in thrust him into the spotlight.  Hank made the difficult decision to decide to play and received hell from his fellow parishioners and rabbis.  But Yom Kippur was just 10 days away.

The story continues on with the struggles Hank faced being Jewish in a time when the Nazis were gaining power across Europe.  Being Jewish was very controversial as Hank was learning.  Hank went on to become a legendary slugger – alongside names like Jimmie Foxx, Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth.

This was quite an interesting book – it almost seemed in some chapters that the baseball was just an after thought and not the main event in the book.  I had heard of Hank before but never really knew too much about him, so this book was an interesting read.  Most interesting I think was that back when Hank played the sportwriters often did not interview the players but instead made up quotes and attributed them to the players! So there are a lot of quotes out there and in biographies that are listed as fact which may not be. John Rosengren seemed to take great care when writing this book and tried to get everything as accurate as he could by talking to some of the players who were still alive and getting interviews from other sources (that weren’t made up) from players who had passed away before he started writing the book.  Definitely not an easy task by any means but I think he did a great job compiling everything.

I received a free e-copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley in order to write this review. I was not otherwise compensated.

About the Book

Baseball in the 1930s was more than a national pastime; it was a cultural touchstone that galvanized communities and gave a struggling country its heroes despite the woes of the Depression. Hank Greenberg, one of the most exciting sluggers in baseball history, gave the people of Detroit a reason to be proud. But America was facing more than economic hardship. With the Nazis gaining power across Europe, political and social tensions were approaching a boiling point. As one of the few Jewish athletes competing nationally, Hank Greenberg became not only an iconic ball player, but also an important and sometimes controversial symbol of Jewish identity and the American immigrant experience. When Hank joined the Detroit Tigers in 1933, they were headed for a dismal fifth-place season finish. The following year, with Hank leading the charge, they were fighting off the Yankees for the pennant. As his star ascended, he found himself cheered wherever he went. But there were other noises also. On and off the field, he met with taunts and anti-Semitic threats. Yet the hardship only drove him on to greater heights, sharing the spotlight with the most legendary sluggers of the day, including Babe Ruth, Jimmie Fox, and Lou Gehrig. Hank Greenberg offers an intimate account of the man’s life on and off the field. It is a portrait of integrity, triumph over adversity, and one of the greatest baseball players to ever grace the field.
