Product Review: Redbox Instant by Verizon

The latest product I’ve gotten to try from being a bzzagent is Redbox Instant from Verizon.   Redbox Instant is kind of like 3 products in one.  For $8 a month, you get an unlimited streaming subscription, 4 redbox kiosk codes and you also get the option of renting or buying movies from the site on your computer (for an added fee).

I’ve only used 2 of the 3 because I didn’t want to pay $5.99 for a movie rental. (The one movie I was interested in, I actually ended up getting at the red box kiosk with one of my free codes!)

As far as using the codes at the kiosk – they are loaded on to your credit card.  You pick your movie just like you would any other time you are using the kiosk.  But when it is time to check out you click the button at the bottom that says “Use Credits” and swipe your card.  It lets you know that the credit went through and the first night is free.  The only negative to this is that it can’t be used for BluRay.  It would be nice if you could get the amount off of a regular DVD and just pay to upgrade to BluRay as an option because I’d much rather have rented a BluRay instead of a standard DVD.  This was super easy and my favorite of the 3 features offered.

Streaming we were able to set up on our TV through our Samsung DVD Player.  I believe at the moment that is the only brand that is allowing streaming as the Panasonic that I have in my bedroom doesn’t have it as an option.  You can also stream through your computer or on select smartphones or tablets.  (They are in the process of adding more devices though, so hopefully more will become available in the near future.)

The selection for movies to stream seem to be really old and I couldn’t find any TV shows (which is what I use some other streaming sites for) and I had a really hard time picking any movies to “bookmark” to watch later.  Going back to my bookmarks later I realized that I had only bookmarked ONE subscription streaming titles, the others were either for rent or at the kiosk.  That movie was from when I was a kid – Little Monsters with Howie Mandel and Fred Savage.

I think that the site needs to work a bit on its inventory and its site navigation because Ive talked to a few others and they have had similar complaints.  I can’t say that I will be joining once my free trial runs out, though I would consider giving them another try in a year or so just to see if anything has changed.

I received a free 1 month trial via bzzagent in order to check out the site and write this review. I was not otherwise compensated. All opinions are my own.

Book Review: Summer Spirit

Summer Spirit is the first book in a series. Just a word of warning – the book starts out a bit sexual and graphic.  I know there are some people out there who may then decide that the whole book is written in this way and stop reading right then and there.  Trust me, it is not.  Once you get past the first page, it is a regular story and not as graphic.  If you decide to stop based on the first page / paragraphs, you will be missing out on what I thought was a great story!

It follows Ryan Kinkaid who is currently living in New York but is looking for something more in his life.  He decides to take a vacation to New Hampshire with his best friend Lauren just to get away from things for a while and to see what happens.

While there, he makes a few friends and ends up getting to be quite close with Ty, one of the locals.

Meanwhile, the home he is staying in seems to have a ghost living in it, that is also gay.  Ryan tries to find out who it is that is haunting the house and why he might be hanging around – what is the unfinished business and can he help him?

At first he doesn’t tell Lauren that he spotted the ghost – who he finds out is Nicholas, in his room – but once she spots the ghost as well he has to come clean.

I don’t want to give away how it ends and if he helps the ghost – but I was incredibly satisfied with how everything turned out and I think that you will be too if you read the book 🙂

I am looking forward to the next book – Autumn Reveal!

I received a free e-copy of this book in order to write this review and participate in the blog tour. I was not otherwise compensated.

About the Book

Ryan Kinkaid, a successful gay Manhattan antique dealer has had it with life in New York City, especially his random love life. Ryan has what most New Yorkers want — his own successful business, and a mortgage-free brownstone on West 71st Street. However, at age forty-one he discovers he is lacking one very important thing in his life: a meaningful and loving relationship. With summer just around the corner, the approaching heat and his restlessness are reasons for his escape from the city. A four-month rental in historic and picturesque Portsmouth, New Hampshire, with his best friend Lauren was the answer.

Renting a house built in 1810, kindred spirit Nicholas reaches out for contact, and Ryan finds himself wanting to know about the past. However, Nicholas is not the only one wanting Ryan’s attention. Ty, a handsome local man, also has strong desires for Ryan.

The stark contrast of the past collides with the present in this tale of lost and betrayed love, and irrational and undying prejudice.

In the end, all that is left is the affirmation of the value of honesty and commitment in love.

G. Jay‘s Bio:

A communications graduate of the City Universities of New York, and after twenty-nine years as a human resources administrator, Jay decided to apply his understanding of the complexities and foibles of the human character in a more creative way.

Like the main character, Ryan Kinkaid, Jay is a gay man who believes in love and commitment. He and his husband have been together for over thirty years and live on the West coast of Florida with their two cats. A transplant from New York, Jay continues to travel regularly to Portsmouth, New Hampshire, to connect with the New England life which he so loves.

Product Review: Webroot Secure Anywhere

I recently built myself a new computer. After everything was up and running I was faced with a decision.  What virus scan and protection would I use to keep my computer safe?  I was contacted by Webroot and asked to check out their product on my machine and let everyone else know what I thought of it.
Webroot is unique in that it can protect PCs and Macs and also smartphones and tablets! (Android and iPhone/iPad).  I have a license for only my PC at the moment, but I am considering expanding my number of licenses to protect my phone as well.
Usage License
For each copy purchased, you have the right to use and install that copy on one device. If you intend to install on more computers than the number of licenses purchased, you must purchase additional licenses to match the number of devices the program is to be installed on. For more details, please read the full license agreement included with the installation program displayed during setup.Webroot runs about $40 for 1 year for 1 device. (3 devices are $60 and 5 is $80 so you obviously get a deal the more devices your protect with Webroot.)  Once you have it installed, it runs silently in the background while you are using your computer – you won’t even have any idea it is there – but it will be making sure you stay safe.  Some other virus protection software I have used in the past, I have always known it is there.  It is either popping up annoying things that I don’t care about (ok, you updated yourself, awesome, that’s what you’re supposed to be doing!) or it would make my whole computer completely lag to the point where I’d consider turning it off just to get some decent web browsing done (thus, defeating the purpose.)  I haven’t had either of these issues since installing Webroot.

If you are not sure if Webroot is the right fit for you – check out their website, the are offering free trials so you can check it out and get familiar with it before committing for the year.

I haven’t had any issues arise so I can’t tell you how it deals with any incoming viruses on your machine – but that is a good thing!

I received a free copy of the software to run on my PC in order to write this review. All opinions are 100% mine.

Product Review: Unreal Candy

Recently I’ve been hearing a lot about Unreal Candy, I even recently participated in a campaign promoting that Unreal had teamed up with Target to win $10K.  You probably saw my tweets about it earlier this month.  Obviously, with $10K on the line, I had to pick up some Unreal Candy to a) try b) use to enter the contest!

I had 2 types of candy that I bought to try – mainly because those were the only ones I found at my local Target.  The first was the “Chocolate Caramel Peanut Nougat” bar.  Similar to something like a Snickers.  I had to say, I thought this was a bit sweeter than it’s competition and while I liked it, it was almost as if the bar was too big and I could have done without a couple of the bites. (That’s not to say I had any problem finishing it though!)

The other candy I tried out was the “Chocolate Candy Shelled Peanuts” which is comparable to peanut M&Ms.  These I actually liked better than the competition and would definitely reach for these over the name brand if given the choice.  There seemed to be the perfect amount of peanuts in the bag and the chocolate to peanut ratio was great as well (unfortunately I didn’t snap any photos before I ate everything.)

If you head to the website, http://getunreal.com, you can compare all of the candies that Unreal has to offer to their “junkier” comparable name brands that you are probably used to eating.   Unreal believes that candy can be made without the junk.  The junk was not there to make the candy taste better, but to make it cheaper to produce.  I really think they are on to something and it really does taste great and makes you feel a lot better about what you are putting into your body.

Now I’m just hoping I can find some of those peanut butter cups the next time I am in target to try those out.. (my weakness!)

(I was not compensated for this post nor asked to post it.  After participating in the One2One Campaign to promote the contest with Target I purchased the candy and thought that it would be something interesting to share with my readers!)

Book Review: The Vietnam War

The Vietnam War is Profile #5 in the Scholastic Book series.  It is geared towards school  aged kids and tells the story of the Vietnam war based on 6 people who played a role in the war.

Those players are: Ngo Dihn Diem, John F. Kennedy, Ho Chi Minh, Lyndon B. Johnson, William Westmoreland and Hennry Kissinger.

Since History has never really been my strong suit, I enjoyed reading this book that was written for kids because everything was easy for me to understand.  If only all history lessons could be so easy for me to understand!

The reason I chose to read this book was because my uncle was killed in this war and I am always interested to read more about it.  Many, many Americans died in this war.

I received a free e-copy of this book in order to write this review.  Iwas not otherwise compensated.

About the Book

It takes more than one person to bring about War. This book will follow the lives of six key players during one of the most controversial wars in history.

Profiles is so much more than just your typical biography. The next book in our six-in-one, full-color bio series will focus on the five W’s of the Vietnam War–who, what, where, when, and why. Kids will learn all of the biographical information they need to know (background, family, education, accomplishments, etc.) about: Ho Chi Minh (prime minister of Democratic Republic of Vietnam) John F. Kennedy (US president 1961-1963), Lyndon B. Johnson (US president (1963-1969), Ngo Dinh Diem (president of South Vietnam), Henry Kissinger (US National security advisor), and William Westmoreland (US army general). This book will help illuminate one of the most controversial wars in American history for a new generation of readers.

It is hard to believe that it has been 10+ years since  Kelly won the first American Idol season. (A season I never really watched, but I do love me some Kelly!)  Even harder to believe is the sheer amount of hits she has racked up in that time. As one of the most successful Idol contestants ever, she has had an amazing career.  She titled her Greatest Hits CD “Chapter One” just so you know that it is not over for her in the slightest – she is still going to be continuing her journey.

It’s kind of hard to review a greatest hits CD, but it is a rare time when you can sing along to every song on the CD before even popping it into your CD player 🙂  It is a great compilation of fun songs and if you don’t own any other Kelly CDs – this is the one you need!

Get Glue Stickers

It has been quite some time since I posted any Get Glue stickers. Not because I didn’t want to – but because I wasn’t getting any!  I was requesting monthly, but everything was either getting lost in the mail or never sent to begin with.  To my surprise in January I did end up getting a sheet of stickers.  Of course from my super old account so these are all over a year old I am pretty sure (or maybe more!)

I did stop requesting for a while, but now that these turned up maybe I’ll try to pay more attention and get more stickers and try requesting them again.

Personalized Amazing Biorhythms

Recently I got to check out my Amazing Biorhythms reading from BecauseITriedIt.com.  The site has a ton of Personal Gifts for Anyone, Anytime.  All I had to do was let them know my name and my birthday and I was sent back my reading with all the info I needed to know for January.  The email with my product came super quickly after I submitted my info – I was really impressed.  It had an Analysis of my Physical, Intellectual and Emotional cycle, information on what each of the cycles really means as well as what my critical days are for each cycle.  It was certainly intersting information to have for my month!

“Bio” means life and “rhythm” means flowing with a regular movement. We all have three ways of operating in this world; three internal energies interacting with each other in a continuously changing pattern on a daily basis. These are our biorhythms. They are the three cycles of energy that govern the physical, emotional, and intellectual aspects of our lives: Our physical sensations, our emotions, and our ability to reason. Each of these parts has its own ups and downs.

Check them out on Twitter ( https://twitter.com/BecauseITriedIt) and Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/BecauseITriedIt)

Win It!

I will be giving away 2 personalized biorhythms to 2 lucky readers! Just leave a comment on this post that is relevant to the topic, be sure to include your email address and you’ll be entered to win!  Winner chosen 2/12 at 11:59pm EST and will have 48 hours to reply to the winning email with their information to send to the sponsor.

I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

Book Review: 5 Days to a Clutter-Free House

Our house has been on the market for a while.  One of the complaints we got from someone looking at it was “too much clutter”, this was probably just an excuse – since we are selling the house because we’ve outgrown it, and the clutter will be coming with us, not sticking around for the new owner to deal with but when I saw the 5 Days to a Clutter-Free House, I had to check it out.

The book offers several methods on how to go about organizing things – all based on the 5 day method.  On the first day, clean the floor, the second day clean up to your knees, etc using your body as a measurement.  Separate everything into boxes and then after the 5 days you have to put everything where it belongs – sorting it to Yes, No and Maybe as you go along to get rid of all those unwanted items.

Honestly this seemed like too much of an undertaking for me, but the books also suggests that you assemble a team – either of friends or professionals and assign everyone an area to pack up to help you out.  I don’t know I can handle a team with my stuff though, so I guess I’m doomed.  (Not really.)

It also suggested timing out 15 minutes – see the dishes piling up again?  Set the timer for 15 minutes and devote those 15 minutes to the dishes only.  I think that this approach will work for me since my MAJOR issue is laundry – the dirty laundry piles up and then the clean laundry piles up.  If I take just 15 minutes to put it away once it is clean, the pile to put away will not end up taller than me and completely intimidating!

I think that I will never really be organized until I have my own place – my room right now is a scrapbook room, entertainment room, office and bedroom all in one – so there is a LOT of stuff in there.  But I can definitely use some of the approaches in this book to help organize things a bit better until they all have a (real) home.

If you have a problem with clutter in your home and are looking for some ways to help combat it – then definitely check out  this book!

I received a free e-copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley in order to write this review. I was not otherwise compensated.
