K104′s Not So Silent Night

Tuesday night was K104′s  Not So Silent Night.  Some friends of mine found out about this show before it was really announced and that The Wanted would be headlining, so of course I had to go.  Shortly after buying a GA seat, they released VIP pit seats.  At first they said these would be “front row seats” but they were actually just access to a front pit which we’d be released into around 3pm and the show wouldn’t end til 11.  Considering this, I decided taking the wheelchair was the way to go because there was no way I was going to be able to stand that long.

The show kicked off at 5pm with Olly Murs despite the guys at the venue saying the show wouldn’t start until 6 and everyone would be doing 45 minute sets.  Olly did 3 songs – Heart Skips a Beat, Oh My Goodness and Troublemaker.  Clearly NOT a 45 minute set (we’d have been there into the next day if they did!)

Next up was The Ready Set – who did a set of More Than Alive, Young Forever, Spinnin’, Killer, Give Me Your Hand (Best Song Ever) and Love Like Woe.

After that I stopped keeping track of the setlists because I didn’t know any of the acts.  But also performing was Austin Mahone, Rita Ora, Chris Wallace, and Boys Like Girls.

Boys Like Girls frontman (I think, I was sitting and couldn’t really see anything) had the band completely stop playing when they were going to do love drunk and then called out some girl who was going to record the song and went on this big rant about how the had a ton of other videos of them performing the song the exact same way on YouTube and that we should all put our cameras away.  Of course, this was the song I had handed my camera to Sarah to take photos for me (She took all the photos but The Wanted for me so I didn’t have to stand) so I only have a couple of them.

After their set I did find a pick on the ground though that must have slipped out of someone’s hand!

The bad thing about being in the middle of the crowd was there were a lot of young girls who didn’t know how to handle themselves.  At one point, a girl tried to drink water and ended it up spitting it out all over everyone.  Thank GOODNESS it was just water or things would have gone downhill FAST. (Her friend later came back saying she did start throwing up. I am glad they got her out of there in time!)

Then there was a girl during Boys Like Girls who was attempting to crowd surf by climbing over the barricade and attempting to land on me.  I felt a foot hit my arm and then saw my friend yell at her for almost falling on me and then pushed her back over the barricade.  There was a bit of fighting going on but when security came over nothing happened.

Finally it was time for The Wanted. The crowd surged a bit so girls got in front of me that weren’t there before so I ended up 3rd row.  (The barricade had a lip and since there were already girls there, I didn’t want to have the wheelchair half on the barricade and half on the floor because it wouldn’t be stable, so these girls took advantage of that and then wondered why they kept bumping into the leg rests throughout the show. Duh!)

I *think* I have The Wanted’s set but it might not be in the right order, I tried to record a clip of each song but failed miserably. I know I forgot to record any of Heart Vacancy and the first couple are so short in time I have no idea what they are now.  I love how in the moment I am like “Oh that was enough for me to figure it out!” haha, nope (I also didn’t think so much crowd noise would be picked up – not used to the video on the new camera yet!)

XFactor – Top 6

Well, I did things a little backwards this week, though not on purpose.  I was at Jingle Ball concerts both nights the show aired so I was “spoiled” on twitter about who went home long before I ever had a chance to watch the episodes.  So here are my thoughts and I will try to temporarily forget who went home to give my thoughts – but I obviously won’t make any picks of who I think will be going home because that would just be silly.

Cece – Edge of Glory – another horrible performance from Cece. It’s sad that she thinks she is so great and isn’t in tune with reality.

Emblem 3 – Just The Way You Are – Demi thinks they stand next to each other? They’ll show her and SIT next to each other.  (but really demi needs to stfu. she is so rude to simon and it is not cute in the slightest)  I didn’t think it was their best performance, although everyone else did.  I must have missed something. (Oh wait. Demi agreed.)

Carly Rose – As Long As You Love Me – I’ve heard this live by Justin the past 2 nights and could only WISH it had sounded as amazing as this rendition.

Fifth Harmony – Fire To The Rain – I thought this was a great performance from them. (And wow LA was harsh!)

Diamond – This is Man’s World – I think the song was a bit too big for her, though the performance was good.

Tate – Living on a Prayer – I feel like it was a bit of a risk to play a rock song unplugged… and I didn’t really like it. (Or I just don’t like Tate)

Cece – Part Of Me – Another crap performance. Wow.

Emblem 3 – Forever Young – I kind of go back and forth with whether or not I like these guys and I wasn’t feeling it tonight.

Carly Rose – If I Were a Boy – another amazing carly rose performance

Fifth Harmony – Give Your Heart A Break – I liked this performance it was fun. Could have gone with a different song, but whatever.

Diamond – Diamond – I liked this performance much better than her first.

Tate – If Tomorrow Never Comes – Better performance and he should stick to country even though I dont love him at all.

Results

The lowest vote getter is CECE! Finally.

Safe Acts: Emblem 3, Carly Rose, Tate

Fifth Harmony and Diamond sing for survival!

I think that emotions and nerves took over in Diamond’s performance and that Fifth Harmony definitely did the better job.

Simon chooses to send home Diamond.

Britney chooses to send home Fifth Harmony.

LA, after bashing Fifth Harmony all night – decides to send home Diamond.

Demi seals the deal but choosing to send home Diamond.

Diamond had a great attitude about leaving too!

4th – Fifth Harmony

3rd – Emblem 3

2nd – Carly Rose

1st – Tate

The Voice – Top 6

This week I tried things a little bit different. I started watching the show at 9:44 so that I had the option to fast forward through everything that was not really needed for me to watch!

Nicholas – September – Great way to kick off the night. I don’t think that Nicholas can sing anything badly.

Cassadee – Stand – Great performance from Cassadee. Still don’t like her though.

Amanda – Natural Woman – Another fantastic Amanda performance. It is going to be so, so hard to pick who goes home tonight!

Terry – I Want To Know What Love Is – Sounds like everyone is in it to win it tonight! Wow.

Trevin – Walking on Sunshine – Definitely an interesting song choice and a good performance.

Melanie – Crazy – Wow. One of CeeLo’s songs (Except not really. Gnarls Barkley lol)  Still not a fan of her but everyone else seems to be so once again.. who will be going home?

Then everyone sang a second song. (Just when I thought I had watched it all in 35 minutes!)

Terry – Stay With Me – This recap is pretty boring… everyone is good! What else is there to say?

Trevin – And I Am Telling You – Eek a screechy song. Not impressed.

Amanda – Here I Go Again – Another great performance.

Melanie – The Show  – What the hell was that?

Cassadee – I’m With You – Ugh. No comment.

Nicholas – Somewhere Over The Rainbow – He. Is. Too. Good.

If I had my way – Melanie and Trevin would be going home.  That’s not how it is going to go though.  But I can’t figure out how it is going to go.  Terry and Amanda maybe?

Results time!

The first America saved was TERRY! So… there goes my prediction. Yet again.

The second safe is Trevin!

Wouldn’t it be funny if the 4 I picked to go home actually end up the top 4? (Not likely though. But you never know!)

The next safe contestant is… Cassadee.

The first person going home is Melanie! (Hey I had 1 right.)

Nicholas is saved by america and we say goodbye to Amanda.

Very interesting final 4…  It could be anyone’s to win.

Book Review: We Got to Play Baseball

As you may know from reading my blog, I love baseball. I don’t play, but I love to watch.  This book compiles 60 stories from baseball players through the years about playing the game.  But they’re not just stories about the game – they are stories about pranks and great nights in the club house and other stories you probably wouldn’t hear during broadcasts.

One of the stories is about how one of the players didn’t know how many base runners they were – so they had a meeting at the mound to figure it out.  If you ever wondered what the players were talking about in those meetings – well sometimes it is to figure out how many players are on base! (And here I always thought it was deciding who would be buying the pizza for dinner after the game!)

There are a TON of great pranks mentioned in the stories as well.  One involving Jell-O is so controversial that there are various points of views told in the book.  Another one is about getting revenge on Billy the Marlin – the Marlin’s mascot!

The book teaser says if you love baseball you will love the book – but I think even if you somewhat enjoy baseball (or love a good prank or joke) you’ll like the book too!  It took me a while to pick the book up – but then I raced through 50 stories in no time and then finished the last 10 the next day in under 30 minutes.

If you’re not a huge baseball fan and don’t know if you will know who the players are – the end of each story has a short bio of all the players / managers / etc mentioned in the story so you will be up to speed on who everyone is!

I received a free e-copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley in order to write this review. I was not otherwise compensated.

About the Book

If you LOVE baseball, you will love We Got to Play Baseball. This remarkable collection of 60 favorite baseball memories comes from 40 different Hall of Famers, All-Stars, veteran ballplayers, managers, coaches, umpires, and others directly involved in Major League Baseball. Their stories range from the 1950s to present day.

“As a teammate, Gregg was a terrific story teller and always fun to be around. Baseball is filled with wonderful stories and Otter has done a great job of pulling them together into one place. He asked his many friends in the game to contribute their story and the result is a fun, enjoyable book that provides us with insights  into the world of the big leaguers that aren’t often shared.” – Cal Ripken, Jr., Hall of Famer.”As a teammate, Gregg was a terrific story teller and always fun to be around. Book Review: Random Acts of Travel

Random Acts of Travel combines 2 of my favorite things – travel and pop culture references! The book clocks in at just over 400 pages and it did take me quite some time to get through – but not because I wasn’t enjoying it. There is just a LOT of information in the book to read through.  There is also a Photo Gallery online that you can follow along with the photos while you read the book at Dean’s Google Plus page.

The book starts off with a warning about offensive language and that reader discretion is advised.  I wouldn’t recommend this book for a young kid but I would for anyone else who can handle the language. The author also suggests that you have Google handy if you don’t watch 30 hours of TV a week  – of course I had no problem keeping up with all of them. (I watch way too much TV.)

I love Dean’s writing style – it is almost more like he is having a conversation with you about where he and his wife went and what they saw than you are reading a book.

I now know where I should travel for the best food – or the worst food (not sure why I’d do that though), for the best views, etc.

If you are like me and love travel (and pop culture) then I definitely recommend this book.  The places they go and the amount of stories that are in this book is fascinating. And I wish I was half as humorous with my blog posts.  Also – make sure you look at the photos while you are reading the book.  I didn’t and the whole time was like “Man I should be looking at these pictures” and then looked at them all at the end.  The pictures are great but I think I’d have liked them better in context. So don’t make the same mistake I did :)

You can pick up the book on Amazon for $3.99 (http://www.amazon.com/Random-Acts-Travel-Trepidation-ebook/dp/B008RZMZ30) – OR you can enter here to win a copy! Dean has been kind enough to offer to do a giveaway.

About the Book

Travelling through our diverse and fascinating world can be invigorating, uplifting and life changing. Of course, it can also be baffling, disgusting, aggravating and ridiculous. This hilarious tribute to world travel is full of humorous stories and shocking advice that will inspire you, make you laugh out loud and slowly but surely convince you to stock up on hand sanitizer.

About the Author

Dean Johnston was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada back around the time Canada was playing Russia in the original Summit Series. Duff Pounder is his pen name but don’t be intimidated, he does other stuff, too. He is a former financial planner who has blogged extensively about his travels and written numerous travel articles and financial resources. Random Acts of Travel is the first full length project he has managed to complete, although he does have all sorts of ideas and a lot of partially written material which had been going well at one time or another before he got distracted, probably by the return of The Mentalist or going shopping for ponchos. This is probably his political side coming out.

Book Review: Twain’s Brand

Twain’s Brand: Humor in Contemporary American Culture by Judith Yaross Lee looks at the humor that Mark Twain used and compares it to some ways it is still relevant and helped pave the way for comedies today.

Some of the more current comedies that are mentioned in the book are the TV shows Seinfeld (a show about nothing that shows how comedians come up with their material for stand up – by showing a contrast of Jerry’s life and clips of his stand up) as well as The Simpsons.  There are also several images from comic strips included in the book as well.

This book was certainly a lot easier to get through than Twain’s autobiography – a 700+ page book that I am still trying to get through. (I’m not sure I’ll ever finish it – although I was hoping to read it before visiting his home in Hartford.  Looks like I’ll be visiting whether it is done or not!)

I never really thought of Twain being still relevant today – but this book definitely opened my eyes to that.  Anyone who is a fan of Twain or interested in finding out more about his humor should definitely check out this book.

About the Book

A study of what made mark twain a pioneer of American comedy today

Samuel L. Clemens lost the 1882 lawsuit declaring his exclusive right to use “Mark Twain” as a commercial trademark, but he succeeded in the marketplace, where synergy among his comic journalism, live performances, authorship, and entrepreneurship made “Mark Twain” the premier national and international brand of American humor in his day. And so it remains in ours, because Mark Twain’s humor not only expressed views of self and society well ahead of its time, but also anticipated ways in which humor and culture coalesce in today’s postindustrial information economy–the global trade in media, performances, and other forms of intellectual property that began after the Civil War.

In Twain’s Brand: Humor in Contemporary American Culture, Judith Yaross Lee traces four hallmarks of Twain’s humor that are especially significant today. Mark Twain’s invention of a stage persona comically conflated with his biographical self lives on in contemporary performances by Garrison Keillor, Margaret Cho, Jerry Seinfeld, and Jon Stewart. The postcolonial critique of Britain that underlies America’s nationalist tall tale tradition not only self-destructs in A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court but also drives the critique of American Exceptionalism in Philip Roth’s literary satires. The semiliterate writing that givesAdventures of Huckleberry Finn its “vernacular vision”–wrapping cultural critique in ostensibly innocent transgressions and misunderstandings–has a counterpart in the apparently untutored drawing style and social critique seen in The Simpsons, Lynda Barry’s comics, and The Boondocks. And the humor business of recent decades depends on the same brand-name promotion, cross-media synergy, and copyright practices that Clemens pioneered and fought for a century ago. Twain’s Brand highlights the modern relationship among humor, commerce, and culture that were first exploited by Mark Twain.

Judith Yaross Lee is a professor and director of honors tutorials in the School of Communication Studies at Ohio University. She is the author of Defining “New Yorker” Humor and Garrison Keillor: A Voice of America, both available from University Press of Mississippi.

Book Review: Mac & Cheese, Please!

Mac & Cheese has got to be one of my favorite meals. When I saw that there was a book with FIFTY Mac & Cheese recipes I knew that I had to check it out.  I thought that I would be smart and wait to read it until after I was full on dinner – but that didn’t work.

The book is broken down to 8 chapters – Classic (and Almost Classic), Mostly Cheese, Eat Your Veggies, Eat Your Protein, Breakfast at Dinner, Totally Decadent, Lighten Up, Cool Down and Party Time.

Typically I stick with Kraft in the blue box or easy mac (which I practically lived on in college!) Ive never ventured to try and other kinds.  But with all the different kinds of cheeses that would work for mac & cheese listed in this book – I might have to start expanding on my options.

Each recipe also lists option add ins – such as bacon, tomatos, ham, etc. If you have a favorite recipe and want to mix it up just a little bit,

I think the first I am going to try is the Nacho’s Mac & Cheese, but that is only first in a long line of recipes I am going to want to try out!

If you love Mac & Cheese or have someone in your life that loves Mac & Cheese and you want to surprise them with a home cooked meal  – this is the book for you!

I received a free e-copy of this book from the publisher through Net Galley in order to write this review.

One Direction 12/1

Saturday night it was time to do it all over again as One Direction had their second performance at the Mohegan Sun Arena.  As far as the setlist and everything goes, it was the same show as the night before, but of course there were little things that were different.

Camryn was once again the opening act – and she didn’t wear the shoes that were giving her so much grief the night before.  The logo she had on the screens on the sides of the stage was also different from the night before and I think she ended her set with a cover mash-up that I don’t recall having been done the night before.  During her set she was throwing t-shirts in the crowd and one hit off a girls hand and the girl behind her caught it.  The girl who’s hand it hit turned around and grabbed it from the girl who caught it and then a mother swooped in and ripped it out of her hand to give it back to the girl that caught it.  I guess Camryn saw this go down too because she ended up tossing a few more near the girl that missed it the first time.

The guys once again started with Up All Night and all around seemed to be a bit more relaxed and loose on stage.  Louis didn’t seem to look as bored and they were all doing their little dance constantly. (I love that they only have 1 dance move and throw it in basically during EVERY song.)

At one point Louis got a hold of some silly string and was getting Liam over and over again.  Then he ended up spraying some of the crowd down front as well before dropping it down to one of the guys near the barricade.  Poor Liam.

Harry joined in a bit more on the antics tonight than he did the night before – he ran up one of the ramps and then slid down trying to go between Liam’s legs who was at the bottom of the ramp.

I looked for Niall and he was on the ground.  Then he got up and kind of like bowed so I am assuming he fell over, but I completely missed how he ended up on the ground.

They seemed to talk to the crowd a lot more too.  Friday night Louis at one point said they didn’t have time for “gossip” and stopped talking, but Saturday they were all commenting on how loud and great we were and how they loved that this was their job and we made it a job for them.

Overall it was a great show and I wish I was going to MSG tonight for their headlining performance there. (It’s not too late – anyone out there got ticket connections? Please?)

One Direction – Mohegan Sun Arena – 11/30

Friday night One Direction performed once again at the Mohegan Sun Arena.  They keep calling these shows “Warm Up” shows for the big event at Madison Square Garden, which is almost a bit offensive because I couldn’t get tickets to the MSG show to save my life and it seems as though these shows aren’t quite as important to them.  But, anyway…

Every time I go to one of these shows (especially alone) before doors open I wonder why I torture myself in these insane crowds of people who just appeared on Earth the night before.  (Is this a line for the doors? Do we have to wait for them to open? My phone has a camera on it can I not bring it in?)

The night was also special for me because I was trying out a new smaller concert camera.  It only has 20x zoom compared to my old 35x but I think that it did quite well.

The opening act was once again Camryn.  I don’t recall her getting all that great of a response last time she opened either.  She kept telling people to stand and jump but most of the girls in my section (and many others that I could see) just sat.  I also have never heard an opening act complain about her shoes so many times!  I guess they were velcro and kept popping open, she ended up taking them off for half a song, then had them on again a bit later complaining again about how obnoxious they were.

The songs in between the sets once again had more girls up than Camryn.  (This is when you know it is time to re-think your opening act.)  I spotted the set list and zoomed in and was able to see most of it – except for what they’d be starting the show with so it was a surprise when they came out of the end of the catwalk to “Up All Night”.  They only did a few of the songs off of the new album which was surprising.  I am not sure if this is the same setup for their 2013 show of if they will re-work things a bit – but I am kind of hoping they re-work it (not that I have tickets – yet!) to include more songs from Take Me Home.

Louis and Niall were cracking me up for most of the night.  When Louis wasn’t standing around looking bored he was doing stupid little moves and then Niall would repeat them and they’d crack each other up.  They also were nearly running into each other constantly and diving in a different direction at the last second.  At times Liam got in on the antics as well.  (And just to note – Louis is my favorite so I am not saying he looked bored to be negative against him)

They did a cover of Wheatus Teenage Dirtbag – and I guess a lot of girls have been saying it is a new 1D song.  This is because if I remember correctly before they performed it they said that it was a NEW SONG and then after they were done asked if we liked the NEW SONG.  If you weren’t aware it was a cover it was quite easy to be confused.

Harry also tried to make a joke – asked who went to the local high school and then said that the principal called because they all missed the school day and where were they? queuing outside.  I thought it was pretty funny, but it didn’t get a great response from the crowd lol

The show was a ton of fun and then I did it all again the next night… so look for that review tomorrow w/ photos from the opposite side of the stage. Somehow I got mirror image seats – same section but on different sides of the stage. Same row too!
