Book Review: Hickey of the Beast

This book starts out innocently enough.  Connie is writing a letter to her friend Amanda.  Connie lives in New England and Amanda lives in Pennsylvania.  She is telling her all about her freshman year at Springden Academy.  She mentions that there may be some stuff in the letter that Amanda won’t believe.

She keeps having weird nightmares.  Her younger brother is having nightmares too.  Whenever she sees a classmate in her dream, the classmate ends up falling ill the next day suspiciously.  It takes her a while to put two and two together.

Next thing we know there is some sort of strange creature that is preying on her classmates and it seems like the next one on her list is her best friend!  Connie seems to be the only one to stop this… thing.  Can she do it or will she become it’s next victim?

I thought this was a great young adult novel, using the supernatural that seems to be so popular lately as a part of the story as well.  It is well written and easy to read – 30 chapters, almost 200 pages and I had no problem reading it in a day.

I received a free e-copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley in order to write this review. I was not otherwise compensated.

About the Book

Connie thought freshman year might suck. She never thought it’d be literal.

Bad dreams? No big deal. After all, Connie Perez is starting her first year in the prep school her mom runs. Anyone would be a little stressed, right? When she starts dreaming about strange creatures and places that don’t make sense, she doesn’t think much about it: there’s other stuff on her mind. Then she starts noticing that the people she dreams about get sick right afterwards.

Then everything gets weird.

There’s something bad on the campus of Springden Academy. Something that feeds on students and warps their minds. And, as Connie and her friends try to figure out what’s going on, it starts to look like she’s the only one who can stop it. Freshman year was hard enough without having to fight evil after class.

Hickey of the Beast is a hilarious look at coming of age in a school where there are no secrets, but plenty of mysteries, and where supernatural studies take on a whole new meaning. It’s a story about all the things that make growing up hell: boys, history class, annoying little brothers, and saving the world from evil. When the supernatural comes to school, it’s no field day – and that’s before you factor in homework.

The XFactor – Top 10

Wednesday night’s show was Thanksgiving themed and each contestant dedicated their song to someone they are thankful for.  Two acts will be going home again tomorrow! That I wasn’t expecting.

Tate – I’m Already There – I really can’t get in to him and I’ll be honest. I fast forwarded through most of this performance. (The perks of starting the show a few minutes late)

Diamond – Because You Loved Me – I think she could have done better with this song, but it wasn’t bad by any means.

Emblem 3 – Secrets – Im a sucker for harmonies and I think they did great with them this week!

Arin – Hero – I think that he really improved on this song. I really liked it and going in to tonight I thought that he may be in the bottom if he didn’t improve, but I think that he might hang around a bit longer after that.  (Although now that they just said 2 are going home, I may need to re think a bit. We’ll see once everyone goes)

Cece – Wind Beneath My Wings – This is the first sob story tonight that made me cry.  Unfortunately, I am still not a fan of Cece or her singing.

Fifth Harmony – I’ll Stand By You – Really loved this performance! Perfect song choice and it was probably my favorite of theirs in the competition so far.

Beatrice – Chasing Cars – Still not a fan of Beatrice. Still can’t quite put my finger on it.

Vino – God Bless The USA – Amazing performance and I think that America will eat it up. Definitely agree w/ Simon that he could be at #1.

Paige – Everytime – Brave of her to tackle a Britney song but I think she did really well with it!

Carly Rose – Somewhere Over The Rainbow – Another solid performance from Carly Rose. But I was expecting nothing less!

I’m going to pick a bottom 4 – Beatrice, Arin, Cece, Paige

With Beatrice and Cece going home.

And I’m going to be SO wrong. As usual ;)

The show started with a bunch of filler. Which was nice because I had a lot of blogging to catch up on ;)

We find out the lowest vote getter (is that a word? lol) this week was Arin! Well, I had him in my bottom but not a pick for going home. That’s got to count for something. Half a point to me! ;)

Safe to top 8: Diamond, Vino, Carly Rose, Fifth Harmony, Tate, Paige

3 left – Emblem 3, Cece, and Beatrice.  So far I’m liking these odds for getting at least 1 right!

Emblem 3 goes through to the next round which leaves the 2 I had picked to go home as the bottom 2 and guarantees me having one pick right!

Demi sends home Beatrice
Britney sends home Cece
LA sends home  Beatrice
Simon sends home Beatrice which seals her fate to go home.

8. Cece
7. Fifth Harmony
6. Paige
5. Diamond
4. Emblem 3
3. Vino
2. Tate
1. Carly Rose (!!!!)

Honor Society at The Space

Last Friday night Honor Society returned to The Space for a show for the first time in 4.5 years.  This was actually the first show of theirs Lauren had invited me to, but I had to decline due to work :(   This was also the first time I had seen them in CT since July of 2008!

Opening first was The Narrative. They weren’t bad, they were quite chatty with the crowd and their setlist had 7 songs on it but I think they ended up getting cut at the end. You can check out more about them at http://www.thenarrativemusic.com/

Next up was Kicking Daisies – their set didn’t include any of the older songs from when the girls were in the band.  Also interesting was the beginning of 2011 I saw them at the space and they sold it out – so I thought for sure they’d get a huge crowd there, but the show didn’t seem even close to being a sell out.  I’m still not a fan of their new lineup and it seems like they are changing their sound as well.

Then it was time for Honor Society! Their set was basically the same as the show in New York City with the exception of them not starting out the set with Empire State of Mind.  We were able to get a spot right up front by Andy and Alex.  I was glad Mike moved around so much this night so I could see him. (Wasn’t so glad in NYC when it was impossible to take a photo).  The only bad thing about The Space is their lighting sucks.  I don’t like to use a flash for photos but I had to if I wanted anything decent, but then I felt bad for being so close and using a flash constantly so I only took a handful of photos before giving up on the camera and just enjoying the rest of the set.

Afterwards we hung around to meet the guys and were able to get photos with all 4 of them, despite the people at the venue trying to kick everyone out twice. (We didn’t listen and neither did anyone else!)

Scrapbooking Concerts

Mainly what I scrapbook are concerts.  It is sometimes hard to make your pages unique, which you have probably seen from some of my scrapbook posts! (Especially after 67 Hanson shows. How do you scrap something that has been scrapped so many times before?) Sometimes I get the urge to be creative, other times I just want to get the scrapping out of the way and rush a bit.

My first tip would be to either think of a layout yourself, find inspiration somewhere or look at someone else’s design and “scrap lift” it.  I subscribe to a couple of scrapbooking magazines and while a lot of times the layouts pictured are of someone’s kids, if you look at it with an open mind you can sometimes see something that will work for boys playing on stage instead of in that leaf pile in the backyard.  Inspiration can come from weird places and sometimes at the shows as I am taking photos I get ideas for layouts.  Then I just have to hope I remember them after the show!

One of my favorite websites to search is twopeasinabucket.com.  They have an extensive gallery that you can search.  Sometimes I’ll search specific things – did anyone else scrap the Jonas Brothers? And other times I will just browse to see if a layout strikes me as something that I can re-create that will work with some of the photos I have.

I also try to set guidelines.  In 2011 it was to try and only use 1 page per concert, 2 if a meet and greet was involved (that would land me with a photo with the band and/or an autograph to scrap as well).  This may lead to you being creative when you have 8 or 9 great photos you want to use, but want to stick to the 1 page limit.  Don’t be afraid to get wallet sized prints and incorporate them into the layout as a border or something similar! (Tip: Edit the images yourself in photoshop. Turn 1 4×6 photo into a photo with 4 photos in it – 9 cents to print instead of whatever the price for a wallet print is that will end up giving you 4 of the same photo)

Other staples for my concert pages are the setlist (which I always keep track of, but sometimes a google search or even a look on wikipedia will get you the setlist, especially for arena shows where the setlist never really changes) and of course the ticket.  For shows without tickets I either make a mock ticket from a raffle ticket embellishment or something similar, or I am just sure to write in the date and name of the artist.  I usually write in the opening acts as well, though I don’t always include their photos in the layouts.

One thing I should probably add more of to my layouts but don’t, is JOURNALING.  If you don’t like your handwriting, you can type it on the computer and choose a fancy font and print it on fancy paper.  If you like your handwriting but aren’t sure about writing directly on the page, you can get a font made of your handwriting and type and print it!  Yes, I have sometimes had to re-do whole layouts because I stupidly spelled something wrong or left out a letter and couldn’t squeeze it in.

Another great way to get some inspiration for colors to use is the Scrap By Color! website. (http://www.scrapbook.com/color/)  You upload a photo that you want to use for your layout and it helps you find colors that coordinate with the photo.  If you don’t have a photo, there is also a color wheel that you can use to see which colors go best together.

Obviously by looking at some of my layouts this is all easier said than done.  I do have some pages  I put a LOT of times in to and others I just kind of throw everything together. It all depends on how much time I have an how overwhelmed I am with what I have still to scrap.

ModernGreetings.com

Every year the Hanson fans do a card exchange for the holidays.  Many try to include their Hanson photos with their cards, so I am always looking for fun cards that I can create using my own photos.  This year I am using ModernGreetings.com for my cards.  They have tons and tons of products to choose from – but I am sticking to the Christmas / Holiday Greeting cards category. They had 440 different designs to choose from, so it took a while for me to decide which card I thought would be perfect for my specific project. (And with 440 designs I don’t think you’ll have a problem finding the perfect card either!)

After I chose my card design, I uploaded the photos I wanted to use for it.  This was super easy to place them and rotate and edit if needed.  I was able to modify the text from the sample from the family’s name to mine.  You can also choose fancy envelopes if you want (for an extra fee) but I opted to go with a plain white envelope.

After your design is done, you can choose to have the cards sent directly to your friends and family ($1.49 each) or have them all sent to you to stamp and mail yourself. (I chose the latter option)

The cards came really quickly after I placed the order and I am really pleased with how they turned out!

ModernGreetings.com is also going to be giving one lucky ready a 8×8 fully customizable photo book! Ends 12/4.  Enter below!

Book Review: Dear Jack

Dear Jack is a novella that goes along with the book I read and reviewed a few months back, Finding Emma. Dear Jack is supposed to tide us over until Emma’s Secret comes out and an excerpt is even included from the sequel.

The book is a series of letters written the Jack as he is away at war.  It is all written in a journal, so Jack never sees them.  She tells Jack what is going on at home, with Mary, and other things going on while he is away.

The letters seem to get angrier and angrier the longer Jack is away.  We find out that Jack went missing in action and his best friend Doug (“Uncle Doug” to Mary) is told that if he is MIA for more than 3 months to take care of the family.

At first, Dottie isn’t too interested in this – she just wants Jack to come back and doesn’t believe he is dead.  But as more months pass, she thinks that she will agree to marry him…

The book gives more insight in to Dottie – a character that was in and out of the “real world” in Finding Emma.  It is nice to see some back story to her from before her medical issues began.  She is a very strong person and tried her best to keep things normal for Mary while her dad was away.

I purchased this book from Amazon in order to write this review. By posting this review I am entered into a prize drawing.  I was not otherwise compensated.

About the Book

Dear Jack…the journal of a woman unwilling to let go.

Dottie is a woman with a heart full of emotions but unable to express them unless through her journals. When Jack goes off to war, Dottie is left behind having to be strong for their young daughter, Mary.

While Jack is away, she keeps a journal full of letters for Jack, for him to read when he comes home. Except, word comes that Jack has gone missing and leaves Dottie to fend for herself. She keeps hope that her husband is alive and will be coming home, until Jack’s personal effects are returned to her by a member of Jack’s unit.

When Doug shares with her a letter Jack wrote for her in case he never came home her world falls apart and it’s all she can do to hold herself together for Mary.

Were you one of the readers who wanted to know about the story behind Dottie and Doug? This is where you’ll find out.

Book Review: The Shadow Man

I’ve been on a bit of a murder mystery kick lately, though I really need to stop because they’ve been leading to some crazy nightmares!  Here’s hoping I don’t get another one tonight based on The Shadow Man, but there were some creepy moments so it is a definite possibility.

The story is about Malcolm King, a successful surgeon with a loving wife and daughter.  He goes to Miami for a meeting and that is when things start to get interesting.

He is hit by a car in the parking lot and speeds after it.  Unfortunately he gets pulled over by the cops and can not catch the guy that hit him.  Later this links him to a murder.

Fortunately for Mal, his best friend since childhood, Ben is a police officer.  Mal swears he is innocent, but the body was dismembered in such a way that it had to have been the work of a skilled surgeon.

More and more people are turning up murdered in the same fashion and it seems that all of them somehow have some link to Malcolm.  He swears he is innocent, and his family and police officer pal believe him, but unfortunately not many others do.

A man is creeping in the backyard at the Kings and Malcolm finds out that he is Billy Littlebear – one of the only people he thinks he can trust.  Billy’s brother was framed years earlier in a similar situation and Billy is convinced it is the same guy framing Malcolm.

Malcolm and Billy try to figure out how to clear Malcolm’s name and how to catch the killer.  Of course, it is all much easier said than done – which you will find out if you read The Shadow Man.

The book took me a little bit to get into in the beginning, but once I was about a quarter of the way through it, I didn’t want to put it down.  I never would have in a million years guessed who was doing the killing and I definitely picked up on a couple of the red herrings placed in there by the author and was all over the place with who I thought was doing it.  The book is definitely recommended but the verdict is still out on whether or not it’ll give me nightmares!

I received a free e-copy of this book from NetGalley in order to write this review. I was not otherwise compensated.

About the Book

Savannah surgeon Malcolm King had a perfect life–a loving wife, devoted daughter, and a thriving medical practice. But when a random airport parking lot hit-and-run links him to a dead body in a Florida hotel and an acquaintance is found dismembered and stuffed into a garbage bag, Malcolm finds himself on the run as a suspected serial killer. But he’s no murderer. Or is he?

Who is the mysterious Thin Man who lurks at the edges of his vision? Are the ravens that crowd the skies overhead a warning of impending doom–or do they exist at all?

With the help of Seminole tracker Billy Littlebear, Malcolm tries to untangle the web of clues left behind by a mysterious chameleon-like killer known as the Shadow Man. But will he be too late? The Shadow Man is a complex, atmospheric thriller in the tradition of Stephen King. Darkly evocative and relentless in its twists and turns, it dares the reader to put it down–even for a minute.

The Voice – Top 12

Time for the Top 12. Things have changed a bit and it is possible that an entire team could get knocked out  – there are no guarantees that each team will move on each round.  I really like this because sometimes one team is stacked a bit better than the others – it will be interesting to see how that ends up turning out!

Michaela – Blow Me One Last Kiss – I really like her and it was nice to see a different hairdo other than the mohawk! Though I do think she had some trouble keeping up with the song and breathing – it’s not easy!

Dez – Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You – Very strong performance from him. And he’s cute so I think he’ll have no problem going through again ;)

Adriana – Good Girl – ok performance, shouty at points though

Cody – The Best – Good performance. I like Cody.

Amanda – Spectrum – I didn’t like this performance from her at all, which is a bummer because she was so good previously!

Bryan – Back to Black – Loved this performance from Bryan. It was nearly perfect to me.

Cassadee – Behind These Hazel Eyes – It was a good performance from her. But I can’t say I’m a fan.

Trevin – When A Man Loves a Woman – Awesome performance from Trevin! Maybe even the best of the night!

Melanie – Cough Syrup – I think this was a good song for her and she did well but I’m still not team melanie.

Nicholas – Power Of Love – Another great performance from Nicholas. I see him going far (now that I know America likes him too!)

Sylvia – My Heart Will Go On – Wasn’t a fan of this performance.  Might have been bad enough to send her home, but it wasn’t fantastic.

Terry – More Than a Feeling – a great performance to end the night!

Who I think is going home:  Sylvia and Adriana

Results show

Christina & CeeLo perform

America has saved: Bryan, Sylvia

Jason Aldean performs

America saves: Nicholas, Dez

CeeLo and his team perform (and CeeLo flashes the camera…)

America saves: Trevin, Cassadee

Blake and his team perform

America saves: Terry, Amanda

Michaela, Adriana, Cody and Melanie are all at risk of going home.  Hey, at least 1 that I predicted as going home is in there!

America saves: Cody, Melanie

Well, I was 50% right, but I am super bummed about Michaela! She did have a bit of an off week and America didn’t vote her through to begin with, but I really liked her! :( Oh well.

Book Review: The Wonderland Alphabet

The Wonderland Alphabet is a short book chronicling the characters of Alice in Wonderland (and other important pieces of Wonderland) from A to Z.  Each letter is devoted to one topic and one page in the book.  There is a short write up about each of the items on each page as well.

The book is wonderfully illustrated and really captures the true essence of the characters, I think!  The Illustrations are by Janet K. Lee and the verses are written by Alethea Kontis.  Of course, the characters are inspired by Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass by Lewis Carroll.

The Disney version of Alice is one of my favorite movies, I’ve also seen the Tim Burton version but shockingly enough have not read the books.  I think that this Alphabet would be a great precursor to anyone looking to read the books that might not know anything about the story.  Or of course for anyone who loves the character and the story and wants to check out an additional version.

I received a free e-copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley in order to write this review. I was not otherwise compensated.

XFactor Top 12

Wednesday night the Top 12 performed.  It was announced that this would be a DOUBLE elimination week.

Theme: Divas

Jennel – Proud Mary – Great way to start off the night! I’m with Simon – she improved a bunch.

Tate – From This Moment – I really don’t know how or why he was #1 last week and I certainly hope he isn’t this week too.  I was not impressed with this performance in the slightest.

Diamond – Halo – Very strong performance from Diamond.

Beatrice – Time After Time – Who decides what she wears? She is so 1990s grunge and I don’t understand it! She is still not one of my favorites, but this performance was decent.

Lyric 145 – We Will Rock You / ET – I love them. They’re so fun!

Arin – Crazy For You – (Did they start playing Lyric 145′s track again instead of his at first?) Not a great performance with him, and with his being #11 last week it is very possible that he may be one of the ones to go home.

Paige – Last Dance – Another great performance from Paige!

Fifth Harmony – Hero – There are definitely a few girls in the group better than the others which totally comes across when they are all singing at once.  I think with time they might be able to work on this but for now it makes things sound not so great at times.

Carly Rose – My Heart Will Go On – I actually thought she was going to sing this last week! Another great performance from her but I am worried her high ranking last could cause people to not vote for her this week.  (And FYI LA saying we could be looking at the winner gave me flashbacks to her audition when Demi said she thought she could win it!)

Vino – Let’s Stay Together – There is just a tone to his voice that I absolutely love.

Emblem 3 – No One – I’m not sure if this was their strongest performance, but it was good and looked like they were having a lot of fun and I don’t think they’re in trouble.

Cece – All By Myself – I just do not like her and I don’t think this performance was that great.  As much as I disliked Jillian – she would have been a MUCH better choice for this spot in the young adults group!  She had that one long note but after that everything sounded off key.

I think that Arin and Cece will be going home.

The first act leaving the competition gets told to us relatively early in the show or so we think.  Then we are teased with having to wait through the commercials.  After the break we find out that it is Lyric 145 going home!  WHAT!? I am shocked.

Then we are treated to Taylor Swift and her horrible inability to sing live.

Safe and through: Arin, Vino, Carly Rose, Diamond, Tate, Emblem 3, Beatrice, Cece

Jennel, Paige and Fifth Harmony are left with 1 more going through and the other 2 will sing for survival.

Fifth Harmony go through with Jennel and Paige singing for survival.

I am really shocked with how this voting went.  America is full of idiots man.  (Or is the audio on my TV THAT bad!?)

Jennel sings first and it seems like there are some nerves there. Paige goes next.

From the two performances, I would send home Jennel. (Even though it pains me to say that! There are at least 3 people I’d have wanted to send home before her!)

LA chooses to send home Jennel

Britney chooses to send home Jennel

Simon chooses to have Demi pick first

Demi chooses to make Simon go instead…

Mario wants none of that and makes Demi choose

Demi chooses to send home Paige

Simon chooses to send home Jennel

That seals Jennel’s fate and sends her home.  Paige joins the top 10

And the rankings again:

10. Paige
09. Arin (up 2 pts)
08. Beatrice (up 2 pts)
07. Diamond (down 3 pts)
06.  Fifth Harmony (down 1 pt)
05. Cece (Up 7 pts)
04. Emblem 3 (up 2 pts)
03. Vino (same)
02.  Carly Rose (same)
01. Tate (same)

I am glad Carly is so high, but I’d LOVE to see her end up at #1!
