Mixtape Festival – Rock N Jock Softball

One of the VIP Mixtape Festival perks was a Rock N Jock softball game of NKOTB vs BSB.  This was the only VIP perk that I was sad I was missing out on, because I only bought GA tickets.  However, about a week before the festival they announced that tickets would be for sale for $10 at the event for non VIP ticket holders to also attend. I could not be happier – boybands and baseball, it doesn’t get much better than that!

For NKOTB – Jon did not play. He just hung out in the dugout.  I think this was because he hurt his leg last year on tour, he probably didn’t want to hurt it again!  For BSB – Nick didn’t play.  He was nowhere to be found.  It turned out he had a solo show in Toronto that night and that is why he was not there.

During warm ups there was a dog out on the field – Donnie’s dog, Lumpy. He was HILARIOUS and was running all over the place trying to get the ball! Howie was throwing and the dog would not leave him alone and wanted the ball he had in his hand. The guys kept throwing a ball far away so he would chase it and get out of their way haha

BSB won the toss up and decided that they wanted to bat first.  I believe it was Howie D who was up first, he hit the ball right to Jordan and after he caught it, Donnie ran over and then Joe joined them and they were all jumping up and down like they had just won the world series.  Howie ran over all annoyed and next thing you know – he is jumping around with them too.

After the first inning, it was BSB 4, NKOTB 3.  It seemed like they were trying to get things moved along and the next couple of innings were scoreless.  Donnie was playing around and took his shirt off to bat – ended up hitting the ball right to Brian, who was actually a really great ball player and Brian had no trouble catching it.  Donnie wasn’t too happy about that – but in his next at bat hit an inside the park homer which scored not only him, but 2 others too.

NKOTB ended up winning by a score of 9-4 after only 4 innings of play. (They had said they’d play 5, but I guess things were going a bit too slowly so they had to cut it short)

It was so much fun – but I really don’t know who decided to have it start at 10am when the show went until 11 each night of the festival and the VIPs had after parties after that!  If they decide to do it again next year (and it sounds like they might, the festival at least), I hope that they do it a bit later in the day!

Mixtape Festival – Day 2

Day 2 of Mixtape Festival definitely had the better line up (in my opinion of course – but hey its my blog so everything is my opinion don’t forget!) and I was very, very excited.  We decided to sit at the North Stage for almost the whole day and moved to the South Stage only once – for 98 Degrees’ reunion.  As soon as we sat down we loaded up on sunscreen – Hawaiian Tropic Silk Hydration – which I will be reviewing over the weekend so look out for that 😉

First up was The Dan Band – a cover band. We finally figured out during their set that they were actually the wedding band in The Hangover. Apparently they pride themselves on covering mostly female pop songs w/ added swearing.  This became obvious quick when he had the crowd shouting the F word back to him.  Kind of awkward especially since they were the first act and there were a lot of kids around. But whatever. (I hate when bands use swear words simply to make themselves seem more “cool”)

Then on the South Stage was The Ready Set. Unfortunately with The Wanted coming up on the North stage next, I didn’t pay much attention to The Ready Set, in fact I paid so little attention I completely missed a song on the setlist! It ended and I realized my oops.

Then it was time for The Wanted. I was so, so, so excited.  Jay mentioned that everyone should put on sunscreen and he knows from experience because he was very pale.  They seemed to just be having a TON of fun on the stage and although I do love boybands that dance, I didn’t really miss it with their performance. (They were all jumping around anyway – I guess that is close enough to dancing)  I did feel their set was too short though and wish they just played forever. They were so good and I can’t wait to see it all again on Friday!

Carly Rae was next up on the South Stage and while we weren’t over there, it didn’t seem like anyone was all that in to her.  She talked a lot, but we couldn’t really understand her from where we were.  She also apparently didn’t warrant the video screens to show her for the first half of her set. Then when the camera did turn on, the sound board tent was blocking her and then they did a different shot of just part of her band, not her.  Very strange and Im not sure what happened to the camera they had been using during The Ready Set! She also said she was going to change up her last song – which was obviously going to be Call Me Maybe – but it was funny to see the delayed reaction from the crowd near us because the beginning didn’t sound like what we are used to hearing on the radio.

LL Cool J was up next – we weren’t sure what he was going to do with an hour set and we dubbed this our bathroom and snack break time. (rootbeer float!)  The crowd seemed to be into him though.  He tried to rip off his shirt at one point and it didn’t rip all the way. I don’t know if he did that on purpose or not.  He also gave away a laptop to one of the guys in the audience and was tossing out roses as well.

We left before LL was done and ended up opting to get a spot on the rail for 98 degrees instead of going into the ADA area. So we were “front row” of the Field area at least for their set! (VIP A and B had barricaded areas in front of us so we weren’t really that close) I had never seen 98 Degrees before so I was really excited for their reunion.  Unfortunately, one of them seemed to be a bit flat on the singing. We think it was Drew.  (I had noticed something being off from the videos from the Today Show but was hoping they’d pull it together for the show) It didn’t really take away from seeing them though.  They only had a 45 minute set though, wish it was longer! (if I was in charge I totally would have changed up a few set times – plus if 98 Degrees was on the north stage instead of LL we’d have never had to leave our seats!)

Before 98 degrees was over (they had a song or two left) we went back to the North Stage to get our seats again for NKOTBSB.  This would be the last performance of the super group – though they did mention possibly getting together again sometime.  For the most part,  the set was the same as when I had seen them last year.  However, there were a few changes because it was their last show and each band had some tricks up their sleeve.  At one point AJ had on an LMFAO jersey, ripped off his pants to have on these tight shorts and next think you know… they’re shufflin’!  Brian and AJ came out during Joe’s ending of Please Don’t Go Girl to sing with him, Joe came out during BSB’s set with a phone and was singing with them… just to name a few things (I don’t know if I’m remembering everything – it’s been quite a weekend)

At one point NKOTB was talking about The Wanted and the band started playing Glad You Came, and I thought NKOTB was going to sing it – which would have been cool… but next thing you know, Max is walking up the stairs on to the stage and I completely lost it. (So much so it is now 2 days later as I write this and my throat still is hurting from the scream I let out lol)  Also at one point, NKOTB, BSB and 98 Degrees were all on stage together as well. Which was awesome.. but…. made it painfully obvious there was still one boyband missing.. (NSYNC!)

At the end, NKOTB came out wearing BSB shirts and then BSB came out wearing NKOTB shirts.  There were lots of hugs – NKOTB announced they’d be working on a new album and a new tour and BSB would of course be having Kevin rejoining the band and doing a new album and tour because they have now been a band for 20 years.

Setlists for most under the cut!

Mixtape Festival – Day 1

Mixtape Festival started off a bit nerve racking. We asked where handicapped parking was to one of the attendants on the street and she very snottily said she did not know. Yet she was instructing traffic to parking areas… But once we found parking and got to the box office to get our tickets stamped so we’d have access to the ADA area, things went a bit smoother.  That is until mother nature got involved and decided a thunder storm rolling through just before the acts were going to start was a good idea.

We went underneath the grand stands to wait out the storm and then headed back out a while later to catch Aaron Carter’s set.  He sang only 3 songs because the weather cut his set short.  I was annoyed because it was only a DJ up next and I don’t understand their purpose in life.  The acts alternated on stage to stage so there was very little down time between sets which was really nice.  After Aaron was DJ Cheapshot.  We opted to stay on the south side ADA area for most of the day and could see both stages from where we were.

Next up was Steel Panther and I don’t get this band either. Are they a joke? I hope so.  They are like the 2gether of metal bands. But with WAY worse lyrics!  Their set seemed to go on and on and it would have been nice if they cut a little of their set to get Aaron another song 🙁

Carolina Liar was next up on the North stage and I wasnt sure I knew any of their stuff but then they had 1 single that I did recognize.  Then back to South for DJ Pauly D.  Again – don’t get it – but he had the crowd pumped the most of anyone at that point in the show. (Gary from Teen Mom was also in attendance – as a fan. I know OF the show but don’t watch it – my friend pointed him out to me.  He also seemed to get the girls in a frenzy.  Again, I don’t get it.  He is famous for getting a teenager pregnant. Awesome.)

North stage had The Fray up next and they had a pretty long set. To the point that they did a bunch of songs that I didnt know from their albums to fill in time.  I dont know if they knew what was going on at the show though because they kept saying Kelly Clarkson was up next.  She was next on that stage – but NKOTB would be on the south stage next. They put on a good show though, it was just hard to get in to it being on the other side of the stadium.

NKOTB came in on some sort of car that we couldn’t see from where we were, and they all jumped on platforms in front of the GA area – in the back of the VIP area. They did their first few songs there which was awesome because they were so much closer to us! Then they made their way back on the stage for the rest of the set.

It was Donnie’s birthday (he’s 40 – again) and so we sang to him and Jon sang to him and then they gave us a gift which was to come back out on the platforms. Someone (Joe?) said – you are VIP but they are VIP too which was nice because the VIP people were being a bit rotten (not all, mind you) about being VIP because perks were changing in the days leading up to the festival.

We ended up heading over to the north stage to snag a spot for Kelly Clarkson and figured the guys only had to do Hangin Tough and would be done. Little did we know that they would be bringing 98 DEGREES out on to the stage to sing with them!

Donnie said to be sure to watch Kelly because they had a surprise for us.  We had planned on watching Kelly anyway, but that definitely got us interested.  It turned out that Joe Mac sang the Jason Aldean duet with Kelly. Kelly is so funny and I love that she chats with the fans throughout her set.  She also had another special guest, Jordan Meredith from the show duets. They did a Miranda Lambert song together.  Kelly always puts on a great show and this was no different.  She mentioned how she didn’t know she was performing on the same bill as NKOTB and that her sister LOVED them when they were kids – they shared a room and there were posters every where so she had to call and brag to her sister.

After the show we made it out of the parking lot in record time! Then it was time to get some rest and do it all again the next day!

Some setlists under the cut – it was raining so I didn’t keep track of everyone.

Music Monday: The Wanted EP

Glad You Came
Chasing the Sun
All Time Low
Satellite
Lightning
Heart Vacancy
Gold Forever

(Special Edition tracks)
Lose My Mind
Warzone
Rocket

The Wanted is another British Boyband taking America by storm (though fortunately their tickets are not quite as difficult to get as One Direction’s).  In April, they released a 7 song EP in America.

Chasing The Sun – the band’s latest single and Satellite are both new tracks that have not appeared on any other album.  The other songs are a compilation of songs from their studio albums The Wanted and Battleground.

I don’t have the special edition – so I can’t comment on the extra 3 tracks (yet, I’m seeing them in headlining concert this week so I’ll need to be prepared to sing along and write a setlist!)

I have to say I think that my favorite songs from the EP are Chasing the Sun and All Time Low.  I love Glad You Came as well – but it’s getting to the point where it has been a bit played out.  I think I am going to have to see about importing their other albums as well. (It has been a LONG time since I have bought an import album, I don’t even know how to go about it anymore!)

Anyway… of the British Boybands I have to say that right now One Direction is my favorite – but I do love them both. I am such a sucker for boybands 🙂

Tampax and Always Radiant Collection

Tampax and Always have come together to premiere the all-new, stylish Radiant Collection, a complete offering of premium tampons, pads, liners and wipes that meets all of a woman’s feminine care needs. With designer packaging and wrappers, these products are must-have accessories for that time of the month. (Prices vary per box)

When I first saw these items in my Influenster Vox Box, I was excited, though really not sure how to go about blogging about them. Tampax and Always are a brand that I know and trust, which is certainly what I am looking for when I am on the go during that time of the month. You definitely don’t want to have a subpar tampon or pad.

The new tampons have a pull tab on the wrapping – it makes it so, so easy to get the tampon out and to put the applicator back in when you are done with it and you don’t have to spend time fumbling around with getting it open. I really liked this.

I also liked how the pad was for lack of a better word, angled.  It had more surface area near the back than the front, which I think is needed, rather than being a rounded off rectangle like most other pads. (I really never though I’d be doing a product review about this stuff so bear with me if this is an awkward post! haha)  I will definitely be picking some of these up in the near future.

All the items came in a super stylish and cute bag, which I will either be keeping in my purse or in my desk at work to keep my stash of items handy but without it being completely obvious what I have with me!

I received these items for free in my Influenster Vox Box and I was not otherwise compensated for this review.

Book Review: Amelia Earhart–Case Closed!

Amelia Earhart – Case Closed! Tells the story about Amelia Earhart and what really is believed to have happened when she was lost over the Mid Pacific.  The story is also a biography and chronicles Amelia’s life up to her going missing.

Amelia is a pretty cool lady – who believed that she could do anything that men could (or couldn’t!) do and be great at it.  Definitely not the mindset of women in 1937 – but more power to her! (as one of very few women at my job – I believe she is right – anything they can do I can do – BETTER! ;))

The book has been updated from the original version written by Leo Gomez and Walter Roessler, both of whom are now deceased.

There are tons and tons of documents and photos included in the book – many from the national archives written on type writers and not updated to be more “modern” for the sake of the book.

I definitely want to read up more about Amelia and her mystery now – even if the case is “closed”!

I received a free e-copy of this book from the publisher through Netgalley in order to write this review.

About the Book

On July 2, 1937 our beloved Amelia was lost over the Mid Pacific creating one of the world’s greatest mysteries. This engrossing volume explores the woman, her accomplishments, the technology, circumstances, and intrigue.

Endorsed by top aviation professionals, this historically accurate work of extensive, well-documented research leads to an inescapable conclusion, revealing the realities this courageous woman encountered in her attempt to fly around the world. Chronicling the events prior to, on, and after that fateful day, it debunks the “theories” and hype that helped create and promote the mystery, while presenting a penetrating portrayal of Amelia.

Jam-packed with facts, figures, photos, maps, drawings, and Amelia’s perspectives, it will captivate, enlighten, and inspire you… finally setting the record straight.

Has a piece of Amelia’s airplane, personal or survival items been found?
Was her world flight sabotaged?
Was she captured and executed by the Japanese?
Was she on a top secret spy mission for the U.S. government?
Does a part of her airplane appear in a grainy 1937 photo?

Confronting the mystery and putting it behind us, we can now focus on Amelia, what she stood for and accomplished. Thank you, Amelia, for your indomitable spirit in forging ahead, giving people everywhere hope in difficult times; stirring us all to dream. Your legacy soars on in today’s challenging world.

Book Review: The Color Of Snow

I have to say that this book was SO GOOD.  Sophie is found living in her room, it has a lock on it – but it locks from the inside – to keep people out.  And there are bars around her door.  It turns out that her father actually kidnapped her when she was just days old and kept her in captivity the whole time to protect her from this “curse” that is believed to be on her.

He comes home from work at lunch to feed her and check in on her chores and schoolwork.  She is not allowed outside.  Then she meets brothers Damien and Danny when their mother comes over to see her father. She is instructed to lie about living there so no one will know that she is there.  Except that the boys really like Sophie (she is incredibly gorgeous, but she doesn’t know it because her father has removed all the mirrors from the house.)  Secretly, Sophie meets with the boys each day and plays with them  until Danny comes by himself and confesses his love for her and ends up dead.  Sophie’s Papa finally tells her of the curse.

Damien eventually comes around again and tries to rescue Sophie once he sees the situation she is in, but Papa shoots him. Papa ends up arrested and Sophie ends up going with her grandparents – her mother’s parents – who have been looking for Callidora (Sophie’s given name) for seventeen years.

She meets her cousin Stephanie who tries to tell her that everything her father taught her might not be right and that she is not cursed.

The book jumps back and forth between Sophie’s life now and the story of Sophie’s parents and how everything went down between them and the early days of Sophie’s kidnapping.  Each chapter has the year at the top and the location and it is not difficult to figure out which time you are in by what is going on in the chapter.

This was a fascinating story – there was so much going on and so many characters to love (and hate).  You wanted Sophie to find her way, but didn’t want her to be forced into it (it seemed like this was happening in some scenes – her grandparents were rushing her to be “normal” at times) and eventually she did make a decision for herself on whether or not she could be with Damien, the boy she loved, or if he would also end up destroyed because of this curse that she has surrounding her.

I thought the ending was going to be a bit different than it was. I am happy with how it ended up (I don’t want to say much more than that) but I had a completely different idea of what I thought was going to end up happening!

About the Book

Can a troubled young girl reenter society after living in isolation? When a beautiful 16-year-old girl named Sophie is found sequestered in a cage-like room in a rundown house in the desolate hills of Arbon Valley, Idaho, the entire community is shocked to learn she is the legendary Callidora–a baby girl who was kidnapped from her crib almost seventeen years ago and canonized in missing posters with portraits of what the fabled girl might resemble. Authorities soon learn that the cage was there to protect people from Sophie, because her biological father believes she is cursed.

Sophie is discovered after the man she knows as Papa, shoots and injures Damien, a young man who is trying to rescue her. Now, unsocialized and thrust into the world, and into a family she has never met, Sophie must decide whether she should accept her Papa’s claims that she is cursed and he was only trying to protect others, or trust the new people in her life who have their own agendas. Guided by a wise cousin, Sophie realizes that her most heartbreaking challenge is to decide if her love for Damien will destroy him like her Papa claims, or free her from past demons that haunt her mind.

Honor Society – Ollie’s Point

With the success of their Kickstarter campaign, Honor Society was able to book some headlining shows during the Summer of Love tour. One was on Sunday night in Amityville, NY at Ollie’s Point.  With how tired I was from the night before, I called to see about handicapped seating.  I was told they had no designated area (ut oh) but plenty of areas with chairs existed.  It turned out alright, as I sat at the bar all night and had a pretty decent view of the stage, with the exception of a support beam that blocked band members here and there.

The first band was Here’s To You, a local Long Island band.  Big shocker – during their set I actually tweeted “Ok I like this opener. Favorite this tweet because I never say that!”  They opened their set with the imperial death march (I think that is what it is called?) from Star Wars and they also did a cover of Bruno Mars Runaway Baby which is one of my favorite songs lately so that definitely won them some points.

The next band was This Is All Now, the one from the night before I didn’t like.  They didn’t seem to be as bad at this show – but the lead singer did mention he was sick and in the hospital that morning – so maybe the Boston show was less than stellar because he was sick.

The 3rd opener was Kicking Daisies. This was my second time seeing them with the new all guy lineup and I still wasn’t that impressed.  They also seemed to do a lot of covers in their set instead of original songs.  I don’t know, I miss my hometown girls Carly and Caitlin in the line up!

Then it was time for Honor Society! I was excited that it would be a headlining set – so not the short 8 songs from the night before. They also promised new music so I was looking forward to that!  I opted to stay at my seat at the bar for their set – even though I thought it would make my photos suffer.  Well, if the lighting was just right I was able to get some decent shots (of everyone but Alex, unfortunately) so I decided I might as well just stay seated.  (This ended up making me be “trapped” in the back and miss out on seeing the guys before I left, but that’s ok, because I had access to the bathroom which was the important thing lol)  The show was on fire and it was really cool to watch the entire crowd up front do the Honor Roll to See U In The Dark.  (But the fact that they now call this an “old song” makes me feel old haha)

I got some video of the new songs – Obsession, Serendipity and This Bed is An Ocean (not really new, but re worked a but and itll be on the next album! Hooray!) I will try to post them at some point if they did indeed come out ok.

Mike also started talking about Serendipity and the download cards they had (I meant to grab an extra or two to give away but forgot – sorry everyone!) and then Andy had to tell him that it wasn’t the next song.  Then when there was 3 songs left Mike was teasing about how since he could read – he knew what the last 3 songs were. (And also mentioned that the show was called “The Hangover” because his birthday was the day before haha)

Word is that their new album will be coming out in September and there just may be a tour to promote it. *fingers crossed!*

Honor Society – Summer of Love Tour – Boston

Saturday Honor Society was back in Boston – this time as an opening act for All Star Weekend on the Summer of Love Tour.  At first I wasn’t sure how I’d like them being an opening act as opposed to a headliner, but I think it worked out well for them. (And we got to leave before the show was over!)

Before the show, I got to participate in a VIP Experience with the band – where we took a tour of the historic 100 year old Fenway Park.  Not something I probably would have done otherwise (and Mike agreed), but it was pretty cool to go through the oldest ballpark in the MLB!  We walked almost all over the place – though never ended up on the Green Monster.  They were also setting up the stage for Bruce Springsteen who is performing there this week so we got to see that going on as well.  The VIP Experience was one of the rewards for Honor Society’s recent Kickstarter campaign – in which they raised 217% of their goal – which may just be one of the most successful music-related Kickstarters in the history of the website!

After our tour we grabbed a bite to eat and then headed to the House of Blues for the show.  We asked for handicapped seating and they let us in early but then kind of had us fend for ourselves. We grabbed a spot by a rail but by the time Honor Society’s set was done my legs were really bothering me.  We got a photo w/ Alex before the show and said hey to Mike and Jay after, but decided not to stick around for Allstar Weekends set.  Typically I would stay, but there was no way I would have survived AND been able to go to see them the next night as well. (And I have concerts every weekend until Labor Day so I have to pace myself)

The first opening act I believe was called This Is All Now.  I thought it was strange that even though they had banners w/ their name on it – they never bothered to say who they were or introduce any of the band members.  I really wasn’t in to them at all… and them doing a Carly Rae Jepsen cover AND Katy Perry cover probably had something to do with that.

The second band was Namesake and I liked them a bit better than the first.  They also stopped singing their last song because girls were getting pulled out of the crowd and the lead singer mentioned that he hoped they were ok and mentioned to the crowd to stay hydrated.  Then they re-started their last song once the girls were safely out of the crowd.

The theme with the two openers seemed to be if you bought a CD you’d get a kiss on the cheek from a band member.

Then it was time for Honor Society! They did only an 8 song set, but it was an awesome set.  I don’t know what happened to them but Mike seemed to reall settle into his role as the front man and kept things exciting.  They seemed to have grown as a band leaps and bounds since the last time I saw them in November and I didn’t even think that was possible because they were so great before.  (And everyone was saying their set was so awesome, better than usual, but I didn’t believe them. It totally was!)

The setlist was a little bit different than what I had read at the start of the tour – they did Here Comes Trouble, Two Rebels, Obsession, Serendipity, Run For Your Money, See U In The Dark, Nobody Has To Know, Wherever You Are.

Here’s a tip I learned.  If you want the lead singer to look at you a lot during the set – go to a show on his birthday and then make sure his parents stand next to you!

Unfortunately all the standing did me in so we heard some of Allstar Weekends set when in the bathroom but didn’t end up sticking around for the end of the show. I don’t think we saw enough to legitimately say that I saw AllStar Weekend so they won’t be added to any of my counts.

It is incredibly rare that I fall in love with an album on my first time through playing it. It is even rarer that after listening to it multiple times in a row, that I don’t skip any songs.  However, Listen Up is a cd that I loved from the first note and there are honestly no songs that I feel the need to skip on this CD!   Listen Up really has a throwback, retro vibe, which I think has a lot to do with why I love it so much.  Haley’s voice is amazing as well.  Haley has songwriting credits on nearly all of the 14 songs on the album and the linear notes includes lyrics to all the tracks (this seems to be becoming more and more rare I’ve noticed, maybe it is cheaper to make a smaller CD booklet and toss all the lyrics up on a website instead).    I am having a hard time picking a song as a favorite because they really are so great.  I think that “Oh My” was an excellent choice to start off the album and capture everyone’s attention.  The album really flows as a whole and clocks in at 48 minutes.
