Book Review: Pretty Little Liars Stunning

On June 5th, the latest book in the Pretty Little Liars series came out – Stunning.  It was also the day that the series returned to ABC Family. (And also the day I wrote this review! I am waiting to start the show until after I get the review written so I don’t get confused because the storylines are WAY different!)

Whenever I finish reading these books I am always completely FREAKED out over every little noise.  Of course I finished this one after pulling a late night at work, and when I heard the front door opening at 7pm I nearly jumped out of my skin.  Of course, it was just a coworker who works late nights coming in, but it is crazy how every little snap, crackle and pop around me makes me ears perked up because I am convinced A is after ME.

And yes, A is still after our Pretty Little Liars in Stunning.  Aria is dealing with her relationship with Noel – she finds out a secret about his dad and A tells her to break up with him or she will spill the secret.

Spencer is trying to get into an elite group at Princeton, where she will be attending next fall, but A doesn’t want that to happen for her.

Emily is dealing with an ex, and some drama surrounding one of her big secrets that the girls know, but no one else does.  Except of course, for A.

Hanna’s dad is still running for senate and she is helping with his campaign.  But when she goes against A, A tries her best to humiliate her.  But does it backfire on A? It seems that way – but we know that no one can beat A at her own game.

How the heck DOES A know everything? How is she everywhere at once? and most importantly – WHO THE HECK IS SHE!? and why is she so dead set on making the girls and everyone around thems lives miserable?

Obviously I recommend this book series to anyone who is interested.  My only suggestion would be – if you watch the TV show too – read up when the show is on hiatus.  The books and the show have taken completely different paths, though the characters for the most part are the same, so you’ll want to try and keep both separate in your head or you’ll be really confused!

I bought this book for my Nook because I love the series and was not asked the post a review. I did because I wanted to 🙂

About the Book

In Rosewood, Pennsylvania, four stunningly beautiful girls are haunted by a very ugly past. Spencer, Aria, Hanna, and Emily want nothing more than to forget Alison DiLaurentis, their former best friend who tried to ruin their lives. But someone refuses to let her memory die. A is still out there, lurking in the shadows and digging up the pretty little liars’ newest secrets.

Emily’s reconnecting with an old flame, one baby step at a time. But is she headed toward true love or another bundle of heartache? Spencer’s learning about the highs and lows of campus life on a trip to Princeton. Aria’s seeing a whole new side to Noel’s dad—and it could drive a wedge between her and Noel. And, for better or worse, Hanna’s getting in touch with her inner A.

Secret by secret, lie by lie, the girls get tangled in A’s dangerous web. A knows about everything, from their tiniest transgressions to the awful incident in Jamaica. Soon A will have enough ammunition to pull the trigger and end the pretty little liars, once and for all. . . .

America’s Got Talent Result Show Taping

Last week I attended the first results show taping for America’s Got Talent at its new home in Newark, NJ.  Being as it was the first week, we had no idea what time we should arrive.  The night before they said 500-800 people who had vouchers for tickets were refused.  It was recommended to get there 1 hour early, but we ended up getting there 2 hours early.

Almost immediately after we arrived, they started giving out tickets.  We got tickets in the 3rd Tier (there are 4 total) in row F.   They told us that doors would not open until 7, so we had some time to kill.  There is a restaurant, Nico’s right in the same complex as the NJPAC, so we got in line there. (If you think you might be going to a taping – make reservations! You’ll get right in!)  It was an Italian restaurant and was really good (they had my favorite – Gnocchi!) and resaonably priced as well.

At 7 we got in line to go inside, but as soon as we got in the line, it stopped moving.  There was a mob of people waiting for the elevators, so we took the stairs up to the 3rd Tier and then had to wait for EIGHT when we could finally go to our seats!

Row F turned out to be the last row in the Tier and we couldn’t see Howie’s “X” on the stage because of the ribbon/rainbow/whatever that went around the stage.  That was ok though, since it was a result show they wouldn’t be using their X’s anyway.

Joey Kola was the warm up guy and he was AWFUL.  Apparently during the silence when Nick is trying to say who is going home/going through – we are supposed to cheer and yell out the name of who we want to go through.  We were never told this so no one did it. After the first one he told us we should have been doing it.  Well, we would have if we were instructed to! It came across quite awkward when watching it back on the TV although I guess if you weren’t there you might not have noticed it on the TV.

Cirque De Soleil Zarkana did a little bit from their show – they are just amazing.  They had 4 guys standing on top of each other! It was nuts. Fortunately the majority of their performance was further back on the stage so we could see. (If we stood up we could see almost everything but then you had to deal with seeing over the people in front of you who stood as well.)

Will I Am also did a song as well… we stood for him to be able to see because he really used the whole stage for the performance and had dancers and all sorts of stuff going on.

Overall, it was a fun experience, but it was a LOT of standing around and I am not sure I would do it again – if we did we’d have to take me in the wheelchair I think because it was just a bit too much.

(And for anyone wondering – the 4 we thought would go through did!)

Fearless – The Song

I recently reviewed the book “Fearless”, I just found out that someone was so inspired by the story that they wrote a song about it.  It is available for $0.99 at CD Baby (http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/markdowdy)  Fearless: the Single is a country pop/rock song with a patriotic twang honoring hero, SEAL Team SIX warrior (RIP) Adam Brown.

Definitely check out not only the song, but the book as well 🙂

Book Review: Starring Me

Starring Me by Krista McGee follows Kara McCormick’s journey as an aspiring actress. If the names sound familiar, it is because not too long ago I read First Date which I guess is kind of a prequel to Starring Me. (You can check out my review of First Date here). Kara had appeared on Book of Love, a reality TV show to find a date for the President’s son.  While she didn’t win, she did make a great new friend Addy – a Christian who is now not quite dating the President’s son – but they certainly are interested in each other.  Kara finds out that there is auditions for a show that is similar to Saturday Night Live for teens and decides to audition.  During the audition process she hangs out with Addy and Jonathon and his friend Chad Beacon – a huge singing star that had won a reality competition that Kara was a fan of.

What Kara doesn’t know is that Chad, who she is now incredibly interested in, is the male lead on the show she is auditioning for.  Kara makes it to the top 10 contestants to win the spot on the show and is put in to a house with the other contestants and Flora, the house mother.  Flora works for the Beacon’s and was sent to help pick who will win.  While the girls think the winner will be based on who does the best on the auditions that they are doing, it is actually going to be Flora’s decision and she is looking for their character and a good Christian girl to star alongside Chad.  On the first day, Flora decides she wants Kara but there is just one small problem – Kara is not a Christian – yet!  With the help of Addy, Jonathon and Flora – they try to help Kara see that God loves her and everyone.

Some things happen in Kara’s life and it makes her wonder if she made the right decision going from New York to Orlando to do this audition and possibly the variety show, but God shows her that everything was done for a reason and she tries to finally accept him in her heart and her family’s as well.

I really enjoyed this book – still a bit cheesy like First Date – but sometimes that is just what you need, right?  It is just over 350 pages and a relatively quick read.  It does have a lot of religion mentioned in it, so if that is not your thing then you might want to skip this one. But if you are Christian or do not mind there being mentions of Christianity, the Bible and God then I would recommend this book to you.

I received a free e-copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley in order to write this review. I was not otherwise compensated.

About the Book

Kara McKormick is told she’s auditioning to star in a new teen variety show. But it’s what she isn’t told that could change her life.

The feisty New Yorker moves to sunny Orlando to participate in a month-long audition, where she’ll live with nine other contestants and an eccentric housemother. Kara knows that the show already has a big-time celebrity lined up for the co-host, but she doesn’t know who it is.

Chad Beacon quickly rose to fame after winning America’s Next Star, but he doesn’t want his entire career to be about singing. There is so much more he wants to do—like act. The new variety show sounds like the perfect next step for him, but his parents want him to have a co-star who shares his faith since they’ll be spending so much time together.

Acting is high on Kara’s priority list. But a relationship with God? Not so much. In fact, she’s tried to stay away from anything religious. But God is after Kara’s heart and He’s put people in her life who are showing her there’s far more to Christianity than rules and judgment.

And just when it seems that Kara’s going to have to give up her acting dream, God reveals that she may have a starring role after all—in a story so big only He could write it.

Where We Meet is the latest independent release from singer-songwriter Tyrone Wells. It was released in March of 2012. The title track, Freedom, is probably my favorite track from the album and it is also the first single.  The whole album is quite great as a whole though and I found that various tracks from the album were popping in to my head throughout the days after I was playing it for a few hours straight.  It has a running time of about 40 minutes, which is about perfect for my commute to and from work.  Tyrone has a really smooth voice and some of the songs have a bit of a reggae feel to them which makes the album even more fun, I think. Where We Meet was produced by Bill Lefler, Thomas Doeve, Brad Hill and C. Todd Nielsen

Book Review: I am (not) the walrus

I Am (Not) The Walrus is a book about a young boy named Toby, who plays bass in a Beatles cover band with his pal Zack.  They are in high school and Toby might be a little bit hung up on his ex girlfriend. (At least until he finds a new potential love interest.)  While trying to fix his bass, which was brought home one night by his brother Shawn who is now off in the Navy, Toby finds a note inside saying that the bass is stolen and if found to return it to Julie.  Toby is faced with a situation – does he return it? Or keep it and act like he never found the note?  This situation is what guides the plot for the rest of the book.

Toby ends up calling the number on the note and a guy answers – not Julie.  He tries to find out where Julie now lives to talk to her about the bass and meanwhile the guy that he called now is after Toby an wants the bass.  A music store owner tells Toby that it is a very low serial numbered Fender and that it may be one of the “lost” guitars – ones that were used by famous musicians but were stolen.  Could Toby’s bass have been stolen from a well known musician?

While this story is a juvenile book, I thought it was a cute story about high school kids involving friends, girlfriends and some rock n roll.  It is an easy read and a bit of a mystery as well, which I always enjoy.

I received a free review e-copy of this book in order to write this review from the publisher through NetGalley. I was not otherwise compensated.

A quirky story about girls, love, and rock ‘n’ roll

As the singer and bass player for Lucky Twenty, a Beatles cover band, Toby wants to make it big. But Zach, Toby’s best friend and fellow band member, is convinced there’s a problem: Toby’s utter lack of mojo. How can he croon about love when he’s never even kissed a girl?

So begins Toby’s quest for cred as a lovestruck singer. But his quest derails when he finds a note inside his old bass guitar. Who is the true owner of the bass? And can a kiss really help Toby figure out who he is?

Javier Colon at the Wolf’s Den

Sunday night Javier Colon, Connecticut native and winner of season 1 of The Voice had a concert at the Wolf’s Den at Mohegan Sun.  We got there a little after 6 after getting stuck in a crazy rain storm and walked right up to get seats (after I was carded, of course, since it is a 21+ venue because it is inside the casino).  I was a bit worried that he wouldn’t get a good turn out, but even though there was not a massive line like I have seen for some other acts, the seats did fill in and there were people around the outer perimeter by the time the show started at 7.

He started on stage by himself singing Bonnie Raitt’s Can’t Make You Love Me.  Then his band joined him.  As always he did a mix of covers and songs off of his album.  He did quite a few songs that I had never heard him do before from his older albums which was a nice treat.  It seemed like a lot of people in the audience had known him for years and were there to support him. (If you know him apparently you refer to him as “Javs”)

I went with my mom this time, it was the first time she saw him so when he started talking about Ok Here’s the Truth I warned her it was sad. She asked “Will I cry?” and I said yes.  After the show she told me that she thought the wife was cheating and that would be bad enough and that she did have a tear in her eye.  It is crazy that no matter how many times I hear that song, it gets me EVERY time. You’d think by now knowing what’s coming it wouldn’t affect me anymore, but it does.

He only played a bit of Taylor Swift’s Mean – he said they toured the Taylor Guitar factory (i think? something to do with Taylor guitars) and he saw her poster on the wall and had the song stuck in his head ever since so he played a little bit of it and then after the final song he played some more of it again.

He also never left the stage for the encore, just told us to pretend he did and cheer and then it wouldn’t waste time and he could squeeze in another song for us.   He also mentioned hoping that it would be the first of many shows in that room and I hope so too because I love the Wolf’s Den (especially since the shows are free!) and obviously would love to see Javier and his band over and over again!

Book Review: Grammar Girl’s 101 Troublesome Words

Ok, I’ll admit it. I get excited when grammar books show up to be reviewed.  I read grammar books for fun!  Part of the reason is because I want to know how many tips and tricks I already know (I was a Communication / Journalism minor in college, after all.  A lot of these were hammered in to my brain repeatedly by multiple classes.)  The other reason is because there are so many words out there, it is impossible for any book or class to cover them all and I am always up to learning new things.

Grammar Girl’s 101 Troublesome Words (You’ll Master in No Time) is sorted in alphabetical order.  Each word or phrase is hi lighted at the top of the page and then there is a little bit about what rules there are for that word/phrase. Or lack there of.  Some words are evolving (e-mail vs email) and other words just really don’t have any rules to follow because of how quickly the English language is changing.  After each write up, there is an example of using the word.

These examples are “cool” examples though! They include quotes from TV shows like Dexter, Gossip Girl and The OC (just a few of my favorites) and current magazines and other publications and all that.  I thought this was a great touch because I’m more likely to remember something Chuck Bass said than I am to remember something a silly BOOK said.  (Throw it all in to a song sung by a boyband and I’ll NEVER forget.)

101 Troublesome Words (and all of the quickandditrytips!) is definitely recommended for anyone who likes to write or is just geeky about words.

About the Book

Millions of people around the world communicate better thanks to Mignon Fogarty, aka Grammar Girl, whose top-rated weekly grammar podcast has been downloaded more than 40 million times. Now she’s turning her attention to solving your worst problems-one troublesome word at a time.

Are you feeling “all right” or “alright”? Does “biweekly” mean twice a week or every two weeks? Do you run a gauntlet or a gantlet? Is a pair of twins four people or two?

The English language is always changing, and that means we are left with words and phrases that are only sort of wrong (or worse, have different definitions depending on where you look them up). How do you know which to use? Grammar Girl to the rescue! This handy reference guide contains the full 411 on 101 words that have given you trouble before-but will never again.

Full of clear, straightforward definitions and fun quotations from pop culture icons such as Gregory House and J. K. Rowling, as well as from classical writers such as Mark Twain and Benjamin Franklin, this highly-useable guidebook takes the guesswork out of your writing, so you’ll never be at a loss for words again.

The XFactor Auditions Providence

Friday, I headed up to Providence, RI to check out the XFactor auditions.  My friend Shea and I were mainly going to see Britney, but figured it would be a fun time.  We got there around 4:45, and the scheduled arrival time was 5:45.  We were told as long as we showed up by 5:45, our tickets were guaranteed.

We found the line to get in and they were already giving out tickets and then letting us wait inside where it was air conditioned rather than outside (very nice of them!)  We exchanged our voucher for tickets (except not really, they didn’t take the voucher) and the guy looked through the tickets to find 2 for us so we were hoping we had a good spot.  We ended up one section over from the stage and about 10 rows up from the floor.

The warmup guy was Frank the host of Street Smarts. He went over how the judges would be coming in and we could take all the photos and videos we wanted, but once the show started we had to put our cameras away. (This was pretty neat too.  I just wanted photos of the judges anyway!)  They played some One Direction for us to get us up and dancing and they filmed some reaction shots of us excited, confused, bored, etc.

Then they played a video and that meant when the video ended the judges would be coming out.  The video was a bit of a roller coaster ride – it had clips of One Direction (yay) but then it had then sending home Rachel Crow (boo!) and clips of the judges.  LA Reid came out first, then Demi, then Simon (who really took his time getting to the table and slapped five with tons and tons of people on his way there) and then of course Britney!  I’m pretty sure just about everyone (at least in our general area) was there to see her.

There were 3 sessions of auditions – each one was 5 contestants (I feel like the last session had more than 5 but I wasn’t exactly counting, it could have just been that it went on for far too long at that point).  The first 2 that auditioned they let through, though I didn’t particularly like either of them.  Demi voted no for both of them as well.  There was a girl who loved Demi and was a big fan (but didn’t know she had tattoos that said Stay Strong…) and went on about how she was bullied and broke down during her song and Demi went and gave her a hug and was crying… Her whole family ran out on stage when she got through and I’d be surprised if they didn’t put some of that on the show.  There was a rapping school nurse who was pretty good… and a 13 year old girl that was PHENOMENAL.  Simon didn’t believe she was singing and made her sing acapella because he thought someone was back stage singing for her. Then once she did amazing acapella he said he didn’t think she was 13 and she said “but I have a birth certificate!” Demi said she thinks that the girl could win it all, so hopefully we will be seeing some of her again as well.

Xander Alexander from last season was back… and a guy that auditioned for Idol was there too.  As well as a bunch of other bad singers as well.  One girl said she never really sang in front of anyone before and did I Gotta Feeling.  She spent about 5 minutes trying to get us to clap and then sucked so bad….

Demi had a lot of really bitchy comments too.  Some of them were hilarious but some of them ended up coming across as a bit much.  She and Simon would chit-chat a lot during the auditions too and at one point they were talking and LA actually had to repeat what a girl said so that Simon would hear it. (Her mother picked the song – Simon doesn’t like that)

When we left, we walked by where the trailers were parked for the stage and while waiting on the corner to cross, Simon drove by and had the window down and was waving and saying hello to everyone so we got to wave to him.  He seems like he is really nice!

I’m looking forward to seeing who ends up making it in to the show when it airs and maybe I’ll actually watch this season in its entirety if one of the contestants from our session makes it through!

(And Shea had no idea who One Direction was – on the way there I had to fill her in but by the time we were on the way home she was singing along to What Makes You Beautiful in the car with me! haha)

Maroon 5 Live on Letterman

Even before we got to New York, this event was a bit of a roller coaster ride.  Maroon 5’s fanclub S.I.N said they were doing a giveaway for Late Show with David Letterman tickets and Live on Letterman concert tickets as well. (2 different things. Letterman’s show and a concert at Letterman’s studio) 3 winners would get to attend both and 47 additional winners would get Live on Letterman tickets.  Then a few days later I got a call that they accidentally included the Late Show tickets with this contest and weren’t supposed to. This was a bit of a bummer because seeing a band I like on a late night talk show (in person) is on my bucket list and I thought I would finally be able to cross it off.  However, to make it up to the winners, we will be getting tickets to see Maroon 5 on their 2013 tour, so I am of course looking forward to that.

With the switch in what tickets I had, I also had to switch who I was going with.  My brother was going with me only to see Letterman and basically was going to be dragged along to the concert. With no Late Show tickets anymore, I ended up going with my cousin Britt instead.

We were going to take the 4:07 train to the city, pick up the tickets and then head over to the theater for the show. We ended up making the 3:46 train somehow instead (awesome!) and were glad for the extra time.  Our first mistake was trying to take the subway instead of cab to get the tickets.  We got to the ticket pickup with MINUTES to spare (6:22) and saw that the tickets said to be in line by 6:30… and it was a few blocks away.  We got a cab and then jumped in the line that was wrapped around the block.

The line finally started moving a little after 7 and we made it in to the lobby and only about 3 more people behind us got in too.  Then we waited in the lobby for a while and I was hoping the fact that we were in the building meant we would be in for the show, but the line was NOT moving and a bunch of VIP people kept going past us while we just waited for whatever it was we were waiting for.

When we finally got through the doors, they yelled at people to stop going upstairs to the balcony, and at this point I was a little concerned. We were going in to the floor of the theater – but all the seats were taken.  First we were told to line up against the wall and that it was standing room only. (I was really annoyed at this point I didn’t think to ask for handicapped accommodations and I really, really needed to sit.)  Then we were told there was no room against the wall anymore and to stand on a rail. Except a bunch of girls ran to the rail and blocked us and if I was expected to stand for another hour or more, I would need a rail to hold on to.  We moved to the middle of the theater, thought we had a good spot, but then once more were told to move because “we’re coming in this way”, so we moved again and then some guy waved us down and said they had 2 seats  they needed to fill… and somehow we were FIFTH ROW CENTER.  I am not really sure who was looking out for us at that point to make it happen… but definitely a big thanks to whoever it was.  We got to sit and relax for about 15 minutes before the show started (which of course we stood for).

At first I put my phone away and turned it off. But when the announcer said to “feel free to text and tweet” that apparently was secret code for “and take lots of photos with your phone”. At first I thought I’d just enjoy the show not keeping track of a setlist or taking photos – but it was so strange to me that halfway through I grabbed my phone and started snapping some photos.  My phone camera is actually pretty good!  I grabbed some screen caps from the stream as well for my scrapbook.  The tickets we got were pretty neat too and we got to keep them!

The guys came in from the back of the theater – and the guy saying “we’re coming in this way” then made perfect sense. I don’t know if they let the rest of the line in or not, but the standing room did seem to be a lot more people than it was when we were over there. I hope everyone was able to get in!

You can watch the stream here: http://www.cbs.com/late_night/liveonletterman/maroon_5/video/  I can actually spot us in it quite a lot, but the quality of the stream makes it difficult to get decent screen captures.
